In this very special miniseries of Ghibliotheque, hosts Michael and Jake and producers Steph and Harold travel to Tokyo for a distinctly Ghibli-themed pilgrimage. In this episode, the team visit Studio Ponoc, the animation studio founded by Ghibli veteran Yoshiaki Nishimura (producer of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and When Marnie Was There). There, Michael and Jake talk with Ponoc's Chief of International, Geoffrey Wexler, about his work at both Ponoc and Ghibli presenting films such as Mary and the Witch's Flower, Modest Heroes, The Wind Rises and From Up on Poppy Hill to the world - as well as answering the eternal question: subs or dubs?Find more pics, videos and treats from our trip to Japan at ghibliotheque.tumblr.com.Follow Ghibliotheque on Twitter:@ghibliotheque@MichaelJLeader – Michael@jakehcunningham – JakeProduced by Michael Leader, Jake Cunningham, Harold McShiel and Steph Watts. On the fourth episode of Bedtime B!tchin with Roxxy Haze, prop maker Jonathan, better known as Ziptie, drops by to talk about the struggles of building cosplay props, his love of the anime series Dr. Stone and the disappointment of the movie Mary and the Witch's Flower.
In this special episode recorded live at Latitude Festival, Michael & Jake venture out of the podcast recording booth and out of the Studio Ghibli canon altogether to discuss Mary & The Witch's Flower, the first film from Ghibli alumni Studio Ponoc. Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi and producer Yoshiaki Nishimura previously worked together at Ghibli on the radical When Marnie Was There, but Ponoc's debut feature is a tribute to the magical, fantastical animation perfected by their mentors, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Does it reach the Studio's standard of quality? On this “final” episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake we take a magical look into the Studio Ponoc, Studio Ghibli adjacent film, Mary and the Witch’s Flower. If you are a fan of magical schools, world changing blooms, and homunculi, this may be the film for you. Will this be the most incredible Studio Ghibli adjacent film yet? Or is this a chimera/amalgamation of some of the most popular Ghibli tropes in a Studio Ponoc style? You will have to listen to find out, but hold tight to your Witch’s Flower and channel your inner strength. Magic is possible, and it is only through Anime that you can discover your inner strength. Judy and Teresa wish they could be as cool as the Chairwoman in episodes 17-20 of “My Fellow Citizens!” (국민여러분!), a KBS2 drama starring Choi SiWon, Lee YooYoung and Kim MinJung. The Viki translators say that having a flower behind one's ear implies that someone is crazy? This is the first time that Judy's heard about this. The Chairwoman (Kim MinJung) reveals her actual plan, which makes more sense than turning a con man into an assemblyman. Why do Korean elections involve so many high schoolers and also, dancing? MiYeong (Lee YooYoung) continues to ignore people who blatantly tell her that her husband's a con man. Digressions: 0:46 - "Mary and the Witch's Flower" 3:18 - "Pokemon Detective Pikachu" 4:50 - Red Dead Redemption 2 6:53 - "Drunk History" Some Korean terms: 기러기아빠: [gi-ruh-gi-ah-ppa] literally "goose father"; term for fathers left behind in Korea while the mothers and children move overseas for education purposes. Sam talks to Ruby Barnhill who stars as the voice of Mary in Mary and The Witch's Flower, the debut feature animation from Studio Ponoc. While spending the last weeks of summer with her Great-Aunt Charlotte in the countryside, Mary follows a mysterious cat into the nearby woods. There she stumbles upon a flower that has magical powers and transforms a little broomstick into one that flies. Mary is whisked away, high above the clouds, and transported to Endor College – a school of magic!Mary is warmly welcomed by headmistress Madam Mumblechook and the brilliant Doctor Dee. Believing her to be a “once-in-a-century” magical talent, they give Mary a guided tour of the dazzling school and invite her to join. But Mary discovers that all is not as it seems in this fantastical world, and soon must confront great danger and call on her courage if she is to save the day.

Episode 97 of One Week Only! We're reporting live from Park City, where we're seeing film at Sundance & Slamdance, despite the snow and the slush. Our key film of the week is "Mary and the Witch's Flower," the new film from Oscar-nominated director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, and the first film from Studio Ponoc, which he co-founded after leaving Studio Ghibli. (11:55) We also review the crazy found-footage documentary "The Road Movie" from Russia, directed by Dmitrii Kalashnikov (1:10); and the handsomely crafted biopic "Django" about jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, directed by Etienne Comar (5:55). Hosted by Carlos Aguilar & Conor Holt. Music by Kevin MacLeod at www.incompetech.com

Charlie, Jess, Brent and Jake discuss the week's films, discuss how actors without a disability are cast in roles that require them to portray one, and ask why 'Black Panther' has become Marvel's fastest-selling movie in history?Reviews▸ The Shape Of Water▸ Maze Runner: The Death Cure▸ The Commuter▸ Swinging Safari▸ Mary And The Witch's Flower▸ The Final YearTrailers▸ Break In▸ Flower▸ The Female BrainNews▸ With the release of ‘The Shape Of Water’, it seems prudent to discuss casting, and how actors without a disability are cast in roles that require them to portray one. Sally Hawkins’ Eliza is mute, relying on American Sign Language to communicate with those around her, and this casting decision has been met with criticism from the deaf community, with notable deaf celebrities like Nyle DiMarco (winner of America’s Next Top Model) talking about how the signs she uses, while correct, aren’t how someone who natively signs would use the language. With technology the way it is and society almost as progressive as we’d like it to be, do we have any excuses to not allow differently abled actors to play their own disability or be cast more often?▸ Marvel’s next highly-anticipated movie, 'Black Panther', which is due to hit Australian movie theatres on February 15, has already broken an impressive record: it is now the number one pre-sale movie in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, toppling the previous record holder, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, which debuted the character. To say Marvel fans are excited for 'Black Panther' is an understatement - but why are ticket sales so high on this instalment?Comps▸ Win one of five copies of 'Battle Of The Sexes' on Blu-ray▸ Win one of ten double passes to see the highly acclaimed 'Sweet Country' in cinemas▸ Win one of five copies of 'Happy Death Day' on Blu-ray▸ Win one of five copies of 'Mother!' on Blu-ray▸ Win one of five copies of 'Blade Runner 2049' on Blu-rayStay Up-To-Datefacebook.com/maketheswitchAUtwitter.com/maketheswitchAUinstagram.com/maketheswitchAUmaketheswitchAU.tumblr.comThe hoststwitter.com/Charlie_Davidtwitter.com/MissJess_SWITCHtwitter.com/BrentCDavidsontwitter.com/JakeChattyNext week's episode▸ Reviews of 'I, Tonya', 'Sweet Country' and 'Faces Places'For more episodeswww.SWITCHCast.com.au
The surprisingly pithy edition. For episode 40 we look at two of the most notable films opening in the first two weeks of 2018 (Andy talked about the very impressive Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri last episode). We also commemorate ACMI's Agnes Varda season with a discussion of the octogenarian cinema legend and her new documentary Faces Places. 00:44 The Post 07:48 Mary and the Witch's Flower 17:14 Cultural Capital Film Diary 19:00 Agnes Varda and Faces Places Facebook: Cultural Capital Podcast Twitter: TheCultCapPod
