At the epicenter of the conversation last August during the most contentious portion of the IATSE contract negotiation was perhaps the IA stories Instagram account where literally hundreds of thousands of IATSE members discovered they weren't alone in enduring the horrors of working in Hollywood: Burnout, abusive working conditions, and sacrificing everything - including even their lives - to simply keep their jobs in the entertainment industry was apparently everyone's story. Pandora's Box opened, and it was clear people demanded change. Among those people are my guests today from Local 871 - Script Coordinator Amy Thurlow, and Art Department Coordinator Marisa Shipley. Marisa Shipley is the President of Local 871, as well as one of the founders of the IA Stories page. She has been on the front lines of the living wage and pay equity fight since 2018 and is committed to finding a collaborative approach to tackling these issues. Amy Thurlow was elected to represent Script Coordinators on the Board of Directors of Local 871 in December of 2021, and has been outspoken about the pay equity issues that have plagued her classification for decades. This conversation has been a long time in the making, and we go deep into the stories of abusive practices in their local, the criminally low wages they have endured, and the systemic nature of these problems across many other IATSE locals. You'll also hear Marisa describe the severe toll that running the IA stories page took on her health and well-being (which is ironic given how hard she works to protect the well-being of others), as well as her deep struggle with the negative blowback she received during the IATSE contract negotiations. Trust me when I say that standing up for what you believe is never easy. But our industry and the world needs more Marisa's and Amy's advocating for all of us. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Why Local 871 has the moniker of The Island of Misfit Toys. What a script coordinator does and what their day to day looks like. The duties of the art department coordinator. The importance of these two roles to making sure things run smoothly between departments. What the hours and schedules are like for both of these jobs. The difference between being flexible and putting up boundaries. Why Marisa hates the words "can't you just..." The challenges that come with running a huge Instagram page like IA Stories. How Marisa got involved in pay equity issues in Local 871 and beyond. What motivated her to start the Instagram page IA stories and the intentions behind it. The incredible responsibility Marisa felt in taking on IA Stories. Dealing with the blowback of contract negotiations and how that affected Marisa. Why they made the intentional choice to not post about the specific contract negotiations and only focus on the stories. KEY TAKEAWAY: Setting boundaries is a personal responsibility that can also be supported collectively. Why it's important to get more involved in your guild's local. The unintended expectation that came from the IA Stories page and why it caused such anger in people after the contract vote. How different perspectives determine whether the contract was a win or a loss. KEY TAKEAWAY: We need systemic culture change AND we need personal responsibility. Optimize Yourself aims to show people HOW to set boundaries and take responsibility to create better working lives. Useful Resources Mentioned: Dear Hollywood: We Don't Want to “Go Back to Normal." As the chair of the Local 871 #ReelEquity pay equity committee Marisa has focused on a collaborative approach to tackling pay equity issues affecting women in entertainment, particularly those working behind the camera. Amy Thurlow is a writer and filmmaker currently living in Los Angeles, California. Amy has worked in television for many years. The original music in the opening and closing of the show is courtesy of Joe Trapanese (who is quite possibly one of the most talented composers on the face of the planet).
Season Finale!! Unfortunately we were still having some sound problems, so Jade may still kinda sound like she's chilling in a metal box. Thankfully we have now fixed this problem, so next episode should be back to usual quality. We can also start posting more often again, as we won't have to spend as much time trying to edit with the sound error. Witches of East End was so much fun and we're so glad we got to do all of season 1 . Thank you everyone for coming with us on the ride. It is finally time for Freya's wedding and a whirlwind of magical events that follow. We finish the episode with a deep dive into wedding superstitions because obviously. Grab a drink, take a break, and come join us on the couch!
We return to quite possibly our favorite episode of Witches of East End yet! Sorry if the volume is a little wonky in places, we had some issues with the microphones, but did our very best to clean it up. Also rest assured we are recording for the new Motherland Fort Salem season and will sprint to catch up a bit with the show. The end of this episode sadly ages how long ago we recorded it. Still we giggle and have an excellent time with the spells, characters, and scenes that is this incredible episode. Our deep dive is a bit more serious as we tackle the very difficult topic of blood magic, not advocating for self harm. So grab a drink, take a break, and come join us on the couch!
Welcome to our unicorn of an episode! We talk shop with another episode of Witches of East End--probably one of our top favorites yet! I feel like we say that almost every episode, but they honestly just keep roping us in. Everyone faces a struggle in this episode: Ingrid and Mike get more personal, Freya clashes with the Shifter, Wendy and Joanna let it all out in the open between them, and Niki breaks a wine glass after harassing Jade! Why is this a unicorn episode though? It's our first (and hopefully only) time we skipped our Deep Dive! We couldn't settle on a single topic then life got in the way of recording that section once we did. Forgive us! We think you'll still quite enjoy this though so relax, grab a drink, and come join us on the couch!
The episode that should have stayed buried. Another episode of Witches of East End. We are able to have a lot of fun with it all things considered, but man it was an amount of work and blessings to get this episode done and finished. Join us in this subpar Witches of East End episode, but fantastic Witches on the Couch episode! We will talk love triangles, seizing the day, Derby fashion, and of course witches. Fun count for how many times Niki can exclaim Freddy Prince Jr. in this episode! We finish it off with a deep dive into spell books, and the creation of our own grimoires. So take a break, grab a drink, and come join us on the couch!
What? We are back once more with another Witches of East End episode. Sorry for the very late posting. Witchy Niki got fairly behind in life and was just not able to get done some of the posting necessities as quickly as she would have liked. Thankfully our enchanting Jade was kind enough to pick up the slack. We continue with our East End witches, this time getting to discuss some cool flashback to the turn of the 20th century. Also Niki freaks out over sets. We then of course deep dive into Past Life magic, and finish it all off with a fairly in depth chat about alcohol. We were having a science moment! Thank you for returning once more witches, so grab a drink or a snack, and come join us on the couch!
Back with another electric episode of Witches of East End. First off sorry the audio of Niki isn't too great, we have no idea how that happened in this random episode, but stick with us! Other than that we celebrate St. Patrick's Day in this episode, talk about genetics, the science of electricity/lightning and I suppose witch stuff too. It is actually a very fun episode where your hosts maybe have a little too much fun with our tv witches antics and life choices. Top it all off with a deep dive into hauntings and spirits from our personal experiences. Come laugh with us, grab a drink, and join us on the couch!
Back again with Witches of East End. This was honestly one of my favorite episodes to record yet. We had a great time messing around with the dialogue, swooning over bad ass Joanna, and taking some digs at Dash. Mix in a great time with a witch lawyer and it made for a highly entertaining/amazing episode. We finish it up with a deep dive on talismans because the show title demanded it. Its now just a couple days past Beltane, but Happy Beltane as well! Grab a refreshing spring potion or drink, open the windows, and come relax with us on the couch!
Hi witches! Took a bit of time off, but we are back with another Witches of East End. This was a really fun episode with some wacky host antics as we dive deeper into the past of the East End Witches and our mystery as a whole. We finish it off with a deep dive into blessings, because today I am a witch. Grab a snack, grab a drink, and come join us on the couch!
We have to go save Freya! We continue to episode 2 of Witches of East End. Our cast is really getting witchy now, and its amazing. We also talk the snow politics of Texas and welcome our meowing guest who makes some random appearances. In honor of our painting "friend" we deep dive into some binding magic at the end. Grab a drink and come join us on the couch!
New show new us! Not really, but still a new show! We begin with the Pilot of Witches of East End. We get to meet our new witches and have some nostalgia, laughs, and great one liners as we go. With no more Motherland Fort Salem we go farther back in tv to this gem. So grab a drink, get cozy, and join us on the couch!
In this second bonus episode, Jonah & Keenon rewind with two shows they both enjoyed in the early 2010s: the post-apocalyptic sci-fi series Revolution (NBC) and the dark and sexy Witches of East End (Lifetime). Also, Jonah gives an update on Messer, his emotional support dog following a very intense (and expensive) life-saving surgery. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rewind-podcast/message

This week, Libraries and Librarians! We talk ordering systems, the philosophy of trying to keep everything, how libraries can disappear and of course, how to look fabulous when becoming a librarian in 1990s New York. The movie was 1995's Party Girl and the book was Alberto Manguel's The Library At Night. Also discussed: The Witches Of East End, Obvious Child, The Astronaut Wives Club, From The Earth To The Moon, In The Shadow Of The Moon, Ex Libris, The To-Do List. For the next episode, Amy chose the theme; we'll be talking "The Summer That Changed Everything." We'll be watching 2013's Prince Avalanche (which is streaming on Netflix) and reading Stephen King's "The Body" (which is collected in Different Seasons). Show Notes: Amy refers to high heels for books so that they would be the same height on shelves; that was not Johnson but Samuel Pepys, whose library is still maintained at Magdalene College at Cambridge. I refer to Jorge Luis Borge's at one point and mention a story he wrote about an infinite library. That is "The Library Of Babel," which is available here. The essay that Amy references on actors and range & actors who have that one great groove is here. Intro music: "Swinging Long," by The Magnetic Fields Outro music: "Librarian", by Morning Jacket
