Kia ora. Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand. I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz. Today we lead with news that yesterday's renewed hostilities between Israel and Iran seem to have been paused. And financial markets are reacting as though this is something permanent, a deluded reading of even recent history. It is more an excuse to bet on higher equity prices again. Away from these irrational markets and after hitting a two and a half year high in April at 3.5%, American inflation expectations for one year ahead slipped back to 3.2% in May, according to the latest national New York Fed survey update. Given that April's actual inflation was recorded at 3.8%, this represents a sanguine view of what lies ahead. More broadly, the same survey shows that households expect their financial situation to deteriorate. It is not only households. In a focus on the SME sector, another national review found them deeply pessimistic about 2026 prospects. Across the Pacific in Japan, some top-line data out yesterday for the March quarter points to improving metrics. GDP came in with a +1.8% growth rate and better than expected (+1.3%). And bank lending data shot up in May, up +5.7% and easily exceeding the expansion of +5.4% in April from a year ago. In China, construction machinery sales were strong in May with excavator sales up +36% from year-ago levels as infrastructure projects gain momentum. Things are not so bright for car sales in China. Sales dropped -22% from a year earlier to 1.53 million vehicles in May, the eighth consecutive monthly fall. Even EV sales fell (-5%). In Germany, they posted some negative factory order data for April. They were down -3.8% on an inflation adjusted basis from the previous month, but that came after a +4.5% rise on the same basis for March. From a year ago, also in real terms, German factory orders were up +1.6% in April. And factory sales didn't decline in April either. In the Persian Gulf, to cross the Strait of Hormuz, the transit trickle is still low but not zero. Only ten ships crossed in the past 24 hours. It has now been 100 days since the crisis began and it seems Iran is successfully tolling the Strait, according to maritime sources. The UST 10yr yield is now just on 4.55%, up just +1 bp for the day. The price of gold will start today up +US$5 from yesterday at US$4333/oz. Silver is up +US$1 at just under US$68.50/oz. Oil prices are up +50 USc from yesterday at just on US$91/bbl in the US, while the international Brent price is now just on US$94/bbl and up +US$1. Hormuz transits are still very low despite the pricing optimism. The Kiwi dollar is up +10 bps from this time yesterday at this time at just over 58.1 USc. Against the Aussie we are up +20 bps at 82.5 AUc. Against the euro we are also up +10 bps at just on 50.4 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 61.8 which is up +20 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at just on US$63,416 and up +1.9% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been moderate at just over +/- 2.5%. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz. Kia ora. I'm David Chaston and we'll do this again tomorrow.

Washington State transportation officials are weighing toll increases to $18 on SR 167 and I-405 after toll revenue fell $10 million short of projections — and the stakes extend to Southwest Washington drivers who could face future I-5 tolls. Rep. Andrew Barkis calls the timing poor with gas prices nearing $6 per gallon in parts of the state. https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/news/washingtonians-could-see-toll-rates-increase-to-18-along-sr-167-i-405-next-year/ #SR167 #I405 #TollRates #I5Bridge #WashingtonState #Transportation #ClarkCounty #WSDOT #Infrastructure #Politics
A second Democratic member of the Seattle City Council is now publicly raising concerns over comments made by Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson regarding businesses and wealthy residents potentially leaving the city and state over rising taxes and regulations. During an exclusive interview with Center Square Seattle reporter Randy Diamond, Seattle City Councilman Rob Saka said he disagrees with dismissing concerns from employers and higher-income residents who say mounting tax burdens and regulations are driving people out of Seattle and Washington. The comments come amid ongoing debate surrounding: Seattle's economic climate Washington's new income tax Business relocation concerns Corporate layoffs Economic uncertainty in the region TOP STORY: ROB SAKA SPEAKS OUT Councilman Saka said he is personally concerned about the economic consequences of major employers potentially leaving the city. The discussion focused heavily on: Starbucks' presence in Seattle Layoffs involving corporate employees Concerns over job growth The broader business environment in Seattle Saka said: “I personally disagree with the approach.” He added: “I do find it gravely concerning when any major employer picks up its crayons and heads to another play box and takes jobs with it.” Saka emphasized: Businesses, workers, and families should all have a voice Leaders should not “dismiss or trivialize” concerns Seattle should focus on collaborative problem solving SECOND DEMOCRAT TO BREAK RANKS Saka is now the second Seattle Democrat in recent weeks to publicly express concern over the mayor's messaging regarding business and wealth flight. The episode also referenced prior comments from Seattle City Councilman Bob Kettle, who similarly warned against dismissing concerns about: Tax burdens Regulation Economic competitiveness Potential business departures The debate comes as Washington's new millionaire's income tax faces: A repeal initiative effort Constitutional legal challenges Growing criticism from some business leaders PIERCE COUNTY RACE HEADS TO BALLOT AFTER COURT WIN The episode also highlighted a major court ruling involving former Seattle Police Officers Guild President Mike Solan, who successfully challenged an attempt to remove him from the Pierce County Council District 7 ballot. Solan argued: The challenge was politically motivated County officials attempted to block his candidacy He met residency requirements to run A judge ultimately ruled: Pierce County's voter registration requirement created too high a legal barrier Solan's candidacy can proceed The race now heads toward the August primary. INTERSTATE BRIDGE PROJECT COSTS CONTINUE CLIMBING The episode also examined the growing controversy surrounding the Interstate Bridge Replacement project connecting Washington and Oregon across the Columbia River. Officials confirmed: Project costs have jumped dramatically The estimated price tag now ranges from $13.5 billion to $15.2 billion Tolls will begin before the new bridge is completed Critics, including Rep. John Ley, argue: Light rail expansion is unnecessarily inflating costs Current ridership projections do not justify rail construction Bus transit alternatives would be significantly cheaper WHY THIS MATTERS This impacts: Seattle jobs Business retention Taxes Transportation costs Regional economic growth Washington politics Economic competitiveness, taxation, and infrastructure spending are quickly becoming some of the most important political issues in Washington state. WHAT'S NEXT Seattle business climate debate expected to continue Mike Solan's campaign now moves toward the August primary Interstate Bridge tolling and cost debates likely to intensify Washington income tax legal and political battles continue HASHTAGS #Seattle #WashingtonState #Politics #Business #Economy #Taxes #Transportation #BreakingNews #Infrastructure #USNews Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. We are now in what's being described as the countdown phase to a historic shift in global maritime power—centered on the Strait of Hormuz. A U.S.-backed naval operation, mine-sweeping activity, and strategic positioning are all converging on a single chokepoint that controls a massive share of the world's energy flow. And the question being asked is simple but explosive: Who controls global trade—pirates or the world's lone superpower?
Let's talk about Trump, Iran, tolls in the strait of Hormuz, and what it all means....
This episode analyzes Iran's dual strategy of asset negotiation and cryptocurrency transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz. We also cover Abu Dhabi's successful bid to host the 2029 World Bank and IMF meetings and explore how the UAE's TruKKer is transforming regional land freight to overcome maritime shipping disruptions.
In the Strait of Hormuz, tensions are mounting as Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has begun imposing controversial tolls of up to $2 million per vessel, often requiring payment in Chinese yuan or cryptocurrency. While President Trump publicly warned that these fees violate a fragile ceasefire and are "not the agreement we have," he also previously floated a potential "joint venture" to split such proceeds with Tehran. This burgeoning system—backed by Chinese financial rails—is drawing sharp rebukes from UN maritime agencies and global allies who view it as a dangerous threat to the long-standing principle of freedom of navigation.
Trump threatens the literal obliteration of an entire civilisation, then announces a ceasefire. So war crimes work, right? Er, not when you create the “Tehran Tollbooth” in the Strait and transform your enemy into potentially the Middle East's richest, best-armed hostile power with a $90bn war and reconstruction chest. We examine possibly the biggest self-own in geopolitical history. Plus: Labour squares up to the Greens in the local, Scottish and Welsh elections. How do they fight Polanski without coming across like bullying establishment incumbents? We look at the Kanye West fiasco. And in the Extra Bit for Patreon backers, what was that strange feeling we got from the Artemis moonshot? Was it… hope? Iran wants bitcoin and stablecoins for Strait of Hormuz toll payments. Iran is now accepting bitcoin and stablecoins from cargo ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, charging $1 per barrel of oil. Experts say the move fits into the IRGC's existing crypto-based sanctions evasion network, which has facilitated billions in cross-border trade. CoinDesk's Jennifer Sanasie hosts "CoinDesk Daily." - This episode was hosted by Jennifer Sanasie. “CoinDesk Daily” is produced by Jennifer Sanasie and edited by Victor Chen.
Before Trump's Iran war, the Strait of Hormuz was considered an International Waterway and as such, there was no toll to pay to pass through it. Now, Iran wants to charge fees for ships to pass. Whether that comes to fruition remains to be seen as international leaders are speaking out against the idea of a toll. Meanwhile, a fresh 2-week ceasefire between the US and Iran already appears fragile. Israeli airstrikes against Lebanon prompted Iranian state media to announce the strait was “fully closed” again on Wednesday and only four bulk carriers crossed the strait, no oil or gas tankers, Is the Strait of Hormuz closed? How will Donald Trump respond? We'll discuss it all. Former Federal Prosecutor David Katz will join us to talk about whether former AG Pam Bondi will be testifying before Congress about the Epstein Files, how Steve Bannon is poised to have his former conviction vacated and he will give us his thoughts on the case involving the US Government and AI company Anthropic.
In today's episode, we cover the latest developments across air, sea, and rail freight, starting with a major breakthrough in the air cargo sector. We discuss how the Federal Aviation Administration has officially cleared the first-ever Boeing 777-200 passenger-to-freighter conversion, which will provide massive payload capacity and twin-engine fuel efficiency for operators. Next, we shift our focus to the water, where ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have led to new security and transit tolls for commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. We analyze how these new transit levies could add $1 per barrel to crude oil, potentially triggering an aggressive spike in global diesel and bunker fuel prices for carriers already struggling with elevated war risk premiums. Finally, we wrap up with a look at the East Coast, where a long-standing regulatory battle over intermodal rail access has reached a definitive conclusion. The Surface Transportation Board recently awarded Norfolk Southern control of a disputed port rail line, a move expected to streamline complex switching operations, eliminate redundant interchanges, and boost overall intermodal velocity. The proposed new stretch of motorway is between Warkworth and Te Hana, it'll be the first section of the Northland Corridor and is considered a Road of National Significance. And to make it happen - it might need to be a toll road. Currently there are three toll roads in New Zealand, the Northern Gateway Toll Road north of Auckland, and in Tauranga the Eastern Link Toll Road and the Takitimu Drive Toll Road. To explain what roads qualify for tolls and how the price is decided, Jesse is joined by NZTA National Manager of System Design Jess Andrew.

i On our radar this week… © Clay Jones – claytoonz.substack.com In the last week, the list of Donald Trump's broken campaign promises was seemingly endless: beginning with starting a Middle East War and increasing gas prices to go up 60-cents-a-gallon (with the prospect of Four Dollar per gallons looming … maybe even more). The “I will end inflation” guy is now looking at inflation headed in the wrong direction. The man who promised to create manufacturing jobs has given way to the reality of manufacturing job losses. Promises of draining the swamp have taken a multi-billion-dollar detour into the Trump family bank accounts. The long-ago pledge to balance the budget and pay off the national debt have been transformed into record-setting deficits in order to cut taxes for the yachts-and-private-jets crowd. And the promise to release the Epstein Files … well, we all know how that's going. Also this week: We have the tenth special election flip from Republican to Democrat – this time in New Hampshire … as the Trump Train Wreck barrels down the tracks with his polling numbers hitting a new all-time low. His latest political Hail Mary is the SAVE Act which would take away the right to vote from untold hundreds-of-thousands. But his demands are falling on deaf ears on Capitol Hill, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune telling him it ain't gonna happen. The Trump family has, of course, figured out how to make money from the war. Sonny and Fredo, a.k.a. Don Jr. and Eric, are backing a new drone company that is vying to meet fresh demand from the Pentagon and fill a hole left by the administration's ban on new Chinese drones in the U.S. Clay Jones – claytoonz.substack.com Trump says the U.S. won the war in the first hour. But they still managed to spend 11-billion dollars after we supposedly had won…and the bombing continues. It looks like the Gordie Howe Bridge will be putting the Maroun Family into the penalty box. Tolls to cross the not-yet-open bridge will be less than half the fees at the competing Ambassador Bridge for both passenger vehicles and commercial trucks, setting in motion a forthcoming toll war between the two Detroit River crossings. Michigan Democrats are using the Bridge controversy to highlight the financial ties between the Maroun family and GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers. In Michigan, Republican candidates for Governor are all calling for pretty much closing most of state government by repealing the income tax, property taxes, or both. Apparently they think things like State Police, prisons, public health, public parks, food safety inspections, mental health and our universities can all be funded with the sales tax, sin taxes, unclaimed bottle deposits, the lottery and the tooth fairy. The state Senate has passed bipartisan legislation to help people deal with medical debt. But its fate is uncertain in the House, where Speaker Matt Hall has very different ideas for addressing medical debt through more transparency in pricing. Petitions have been filed with the state to force a vote in November on a deceptive proposal which, on its face, prohibits non-citizens from voting in Michigan … something that is already a part of state law. Left unstated by the backers are the proposal's impact on voting rights. A longtime chronicler of state government has taken a look behind the proposal of “Americans for Citizens Only Voting.” John Lindstrom has covered state government over the last four decades. Since retiring as publisher of the highly regarded Gongwer Michigan report, he's been a columnist for the Detroit Free Press.
