Is Earth billions of years old as evolutionists and “Old Earth Creationists” say, or is it only a few thousand years old as “Young Earth Creationists” purport? Does the creation narrative in Genesis 1 help answer these questions? The answer is a blunt NO! If we're being completely honest, we have to admit that Genesis 1 frankly does a TERRIBLE job of giving a comprehensive and detailed explanation of the enormous complexity of the physics and biology of creation. But what if that's NOT the intention of the passage? So why was Genesis written the way it was? What IS the age of the universe (and does it even matter)? We'll examine those questions on this week's podcast, including:Why the creation narrative is so brief and lacking in detailThe REAL reason that Genesis 1 is in the BibleDid God create the world in a state of order or chaos? What is the so-called “gap theory”The true message of the Book of Job (I kind of went off on a tangent…)When and how did Satan fall? Why trying to figure out the age of the earth is meaninglessJoing the Faith By Reason Patreon for exclusive content, Q&A's and private Bible Studywww.patreon.com/faithbyreason

In this video, Dr. Scott Aniol dives into the core differences between Old Earth Creationism (OEC) and Young Earth Creationism (YEC), and why many proponents of YEC find OEC problematic. We'll explore how the interpretation of Genesis plays a pivotal role, and what science says about the age of the earth. From theological implications to the integrity of biblical literalism, we examine why Young Earth Creationists argue that the timeline of creation is central to maintaining a literal understanding of Scripture. Watch as we break down the key contradictions in Old Earth Creationism and how it conflicts with the biblical narrative of a young earth, as well as what this means for the debate between faith and science.

Our dialogue navigates the complex waters of Christian perspectives, from Young Earth Creationists' staunch defense of a 6,000-year-old planet to Old Earth advocates who find harmony between an ancient earth and the sacred texts. Join our compelling conversation, where we dissect the controversies that emerge from interpreting 'days' in Genesis and wrestling with the alignment of creation's order to literal scriptural accounts. Glenn's insights illuminate the intense discussions within the Christian community, underscoring the diversity of thought that unites in the core belief of divine creation. Besides enjoying in-depth discussion with my friends Paul Pavlik and JP Chavez while we all three listened through it together, this book made me curious to read Augustine's fuller commentary directly. I can't seem to find a copy online, except from AbeBooks.com where a translation in two volumes published by Paulist Press in 1982, and translated by John Hammond Taylor. It's part of a series called Ancient Christian Writers, which sounds terribly interesting. Volume I and II, Books 1-6 and 7-12, is going for $79.16 plus $22.54 to ship to the U.S. from the Netherlands. So perhaps I will hold off for now. I tell you this to help you realize how strongly I feel about Gavin Ortlund writing his treatment of Augustine's commentaries on Genesis from a certain bias against Young Earth Creationists. Being a Young Earth Creationist myself, taking some umbrage is obligatory. Where Ortlund cautions general humility in debates about the meaning of Genesis 1-3, for instance, he seems to come back often to Young Earth adherents especially, like Answers in Genesis and the Institute for Creation Research. But why do Young Earth Creationists especially need humility? And is humility quite the right word with them particularly compared with Old Earth or Evolutionary Creationists? Hazarding a guess, Ortlund is referring less to humility before the text, or humility before God - though that is what Augustine would have meant - and more to humility before the claims of positivist scientists. The unbelieving world in academia holds in derision Young Earth Creationists especially. And anytime Christians generally talk back to or question the godless men and women in white lab coats, we are sneered at, and called "anti-Science." In facing these types especially, then, I can see how a prescription for greater "humility" might reduce friction. But then it is worth noting the whole tone, tenor, and paradigm of Augustine's City of God, which I read last year. And familiarity with that work does indeed make me wonder whether Augustine would be more circumspect about where we find ourselves today were he actually to walk into a room where a Young Earth, Old Earth, and Evolutionary Creationist were debating Genesis 1-3. We all are tempted by virtue of our humanity to think more highly of ourselves than we ought, and to be haughty rather than associating with the lowly. We all, as we gain knowledge and understanding, must actively resist the temptation to be wise in our own eyes. But then my point of view is that mainstream academics are further from the kingdom. And where their de facto scorn for those who take the Bible as being literally true could be interpreted as not associating with the lowly, perhaps there are other kinds of humility needed here besides just humility before the world. These two are related, of course. That we would be humble before God and His Word must translate into genuine humility when relating to other saints and the outside world, to be sure. But so also, confidence in God's Word should not be taken for a lack of humility, even where it leads to more vehement criticisms from the naturalists and materialists. We should admit to a mysterious quality to Genesis 1-3, as Augustine did. And just as he spent decades toiling at trying to explore its many combinations of possible meanings and implications - believing it was true, yet not always being certain what that means - we should not be overhasty to compromise with the claims of mainstream science as if the conversation between us is a one way street, with the men in white lab coats telling us what of our Bibles we can believe or not as they see fit. By all means, let's create two categories. Those who deny the Bible is true on the one hand, and those who debate what that means on the other. But let's recognize it may not always be easy to tell the difference. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

He will not listen to the counsel of our pastor. Should I submit to his decision to leave our biblical church and be a part of the cult? He now thinks of me as "not saved" and I'm considering leaving the house. 11:50 {Does Moses Refer to himself as YHWH?} Why does Moses refer to himself as YHWH in Deuteronomy 29:6? 16:34 {The Beatitudes in Luke vs. Matthew} The beatitudes in Luke 6:20-21 seem to have a different emphasis than those in Matthew 5 (physical poverty/hunger in Luke vs. spiritual poverty/hunger in Matthew). Much of the discourse in Luke 6 seems to cover similar teaching points as the Sermon on the Mount, so should the beatitudes in Luke be understood as the same as those in Matthew? If they are different, what is the takeaway from Luke's beatitudes? 22:08 {Were Adam & Eve Cursed?} When reading Genesis 3:16 (especially in the KJV), I’m under the impression that Adam and Eve were not cursed, but only the Earth. Could you please weigh in on this? 26:28 {Advice for Entering College & Adulthood} I’m turning 18 this year, and have been a Christian for 2 years now. I’m looking at colleges now because I’m a junior in high school. Any advice for looking at colleges and going into adulthood? 31:47 {About 1 Cor. 5 & Banning Abortion} Does 1 Corinthians 5:12-13 mean we shouldn't pass laws to ban abortion for "outsiders"? 38:26 {Can Pagan Traditions be Redeemed?} Are things with proven or supposed Pagan origins (such as wedding rings or birthday candles) to be avoided, according to Scripture? Or are they able to be redeemed? 43:20 {How Much to Confess Past Sins} I have some past sins that are pretty bad and very shameful. Do I need to confess these sins to my family and friends? I've confessed them to God and a personal pastor. 46:53 {Encouragement for a Progressive Friend} My friend has always been a strong Christian and is now struggling with same-sex attraction. He has adopted progressive thoughts on the Bible. How can I encourage him otherwise? 49:35 {Can We Do God’s Will Without Realizing It?} As a kid, my mom taught me to treat others as you would want them to treat you. I remember living by this, but I didn't know it came from Jesus. Does this show us that we can do God's will without realizing it? 53:26 {Can We Hear the “Still Small Voice” Today?} Pastors have preached about this “still small voice” that approached Elijah when he was distressed in the caves. Question Time Stamps for Quick Reference: 0:00 - Intro 1:05 {Advice for a Difficult Marital Situation} My husband has joined a “Christian” cult where women are taught they'll go to Hell if they wear makeup, trousers, jewelry, etc., and I refuse to follow that teaching. Is this something we are supposed to be waiting and staying still to listen to today? 57:50 {How to Be Content While Suffering} God has blessed my life and I know it could be worse, but I'm severely disabled and sometimes I feel so trapped in my body that I want to die, but know that I can't. Making Sense of Young Earth Creationism

Young Earth Creationism is the view that God created everything that exists – including the earth – in six literal consecutive days and rested on a literal seventh consecutive day according to a literal interpretation of the book of Genesis in the Old Testament, specifically the first eleven chapters. Central to the argument by Young Earth Creationists is the fact that the Hebrew word ‘Yom' translated into English as “day” in the Genesis account of Creation is used throughout the Old Testament. And every other time that word ‘Yom' is used throughout the Hebrew Old Testament it is understood most directly to mean a literal 24-hour period of time. Another core argument Young Earth Creationists use is the explicit nature of the phrase “and there was morning and evening on the [such and such] day” used with each successive day of Creation described in Genesis. Proponents of an Old Earth, poetic, symbolic, or figurative reading of Genesis are fond of pointing to where in the Scriptures the prophet tells us that “a day is as a thousand years" and "a thousand years is as a day” to the Lord. And by connecting that passage to a figurative interpretation of Genesis, they assert that the days being described in Genesis could be any other length of time whatsoever – even millions or billions of years. And thus they excuse themselves for accommodating modern, secular science in its claims that the universe and the earth are millions and billions of years old, and that all life on earth arose by random, unguided, evolutionary processes which God could have initiated. Young Earth Creationists meanwhile typically oppose this accommodation on the grounds that there is no need for it. There is no need to compromise with the mainstream of modern science and its secular humanism. But there is a great deal of need to not compromise with it. Modern science, after all, rejects as a rule all references to divine revelation like the Bible, and similarly rejects all supernatural explanations that would amount to giving God credit for Creation. Accommodating modern secular science in its purely naturalistic insistences about our origins, or the origins and age of the Earth, opens the door to compromising on everything else God's Word tells us God ever did to intervene or reveal Himself throughout history. And that includes but is not limited to the incarnation, the virgin birth, and the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As should be obvious, if we throw out the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ then we have nothing left of Christianity. Our entire faith is based on the claim that Jesus was raised from the dead after living a sinless life and atoning for our sins through his literal death on the cross. And if we don't believe that, we're not Christians. It's as simple as that. So how far do we compromise with modern science when the claims of modern science contradict what the Bible teaches? That's really the central question, and Young Earth Creationists like myself have a simple answer. 'Not at all.' --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

When it comes to the origins of the Earth, the most prominent perspective held by many contemporary American Evangelicals is the concept of Young-Earth Creationism. This is the idea that God created the universe and everything in this universe in six literal calendar days (six consecutive 24-hour periods). The Young-Earth position asserts that God created everything approximately 6,000 years ago (although some Young Earth Creationists say that it may have happened as far back as 10,000 to 15,000 years ago) and most Young-Earth creationists argue that the science and date that seem to point to an Old-Earth (billions of years old) is science that is being done with flawed presuppositions therefore always leads to flawed conclusions. In this episode, Kenny interviews podcaster and apologist Steve Schramm. Hank has long maintained that how you view your origins will ultimately determine how you live your life. Likewise, the prevailing cultural acceptance of the Darwinian paradigm has led to a culture in decline. But for those skeptical of the worldviews and arguments of scientific materialists, there is good news. The Darwinian paradigm finds itself in a desperate condition thanks in large part to the Intelligent Design movement leaders such as Dr. Stephen C. Meyer. Dr. Meyer is currently the director of the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture, in addition to authoring the New York Times best seller Darwin's Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design as well as Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design, which was named a Book of the Year by The Times (of London) Literary Supplement in 2009. Topics discussed include: why the Intelligent Design (ID) movement isn't a “science stopper” but a science generator (6:00); the exciting state of the Intelligent Design movement today as many scientists, such as distinguished paleontologist Günter Bechly who is now a Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute, are growing increasingly skeptical of Darwinism (8:35); the overwhelming impact that Darwin's On the Origin of Species and evolution have had in shaping worldviews such as scientific materialism and how new discoveries are pointing back to a theistic explanation of origins in what Meyer calls “the return of the God hypothesis” (12:10); how secular assumptions limit academic freedom in the sciences and the effect that limits on discourse has on scientists and scientific discovery (15:35); the deep prejudice of Wikipedia toward Intelligent Design with stigmatizing labels such as “pseudoscience” in reference to the ID movement (22:25); how the broad persecution of Christians in secular academics leads Christians of different denominations to unite around the essentials of the Christian faith and their common cause (24:25); Darwin's Doubt, the Cambrian explosion, and the importance of information to life (27:45); exploring how Young Earth Creationists practice science (31:15); arguably the most exciting discovery in the history of science is that the foundation of life is digital information stored in DNA, and the implications this discovery has on the evidence for Intelligent Design (36:15); the importance of reducing intellectual insecurity in the Christian world (39:20); critiquing theistic evolution, and why Christians shouldn't feel the need to synthesize their beliefs with a Neo-Darwinian paradigm increasingly in doubt (43:45); the cultural consequences of our worldviews (47:15); discussing the book Why People Stop Believing, and the need for an intellectual defense of the Christian faith (51:50); the racist implications of the evolutionary paradigm (54:30); the elimination of unfit genes as a form of positive eugenics growing in popularity today (56:25); Meyer offers critical responses to several quotes Hank reads from popular evolutionists (59:20); the myth of Darwin's tree of life (1:05:05); “the waiting time problem” and the Darwinian math of population genetics (1:07:30); looking to computer programmers and coding to poke holes in the link between humans and chimps (1:10:40); why noted atheist philosopher Thomas Nagel believes that defenders of Intelligent Design, such as Stephen C. Meyer, deserve our gratitude (1:14:15); and educating the culture about advances in the Intelligent Design movement (1:18:30).

This week, Kaleb and Joe return to a listener favorite: Mythic Origins. Join them for a discussion on Bahamut, Cockatrice, and Leviathan. Enjoy! Bahamut- Bahamut comes from Arabian Mythology. He is a giant fish that acts as a supporting layer of the earth. According to Zakariya al-Quazwini, a 13th century Arabic Astronomer, Earth is supported by an ox that stands on Bahamut who dwells in a cosmic ocean. That ocean is in a bowl that sits on top of an angel or a jinn (also known as a genie). Another account claims that Bahamut is supporting a bull named Kujata, who’s supporting a ruby mountain holding an angel who holds and supports the seven earths. Yet another version of the story  accounts that Bahamut supports a bed of sand that supports a bull, who rests a rock on his back holding the waters in which Earth is located. Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges claims that Bahamut is the large fish that Jesus beholds in the 496th night of the One Thousand and One Nights. In this version, he is a giant fish swimming in a vast ocean, carrying a bull on its head which bears a rock and above the rock is an angel who carries the seven stages of the earth's. Beneath Bahamut is an abyss of air, fire, and a serpent called Falak, a serpent so great that only its fear of Allah’s power keeps it from swallowing all of creation.   Cockatrice- FFIV  The Cockatrice is a mythical beast that’s a two legged dragon, or serpent like beast, with a rooster’s head. The name derives from the medieval Latin calcatrix, which means tracker. According to Alexander Neckam, a mid 12th century English Scholar and Theologian, the cockatrice is the product of an egg laid by a male chicken and incubated by a toad, sometimes substituted with a snake. THe name became almost synonymous with basilisk, the main difference being that basilisks are generally depicted as animals without wings. The cockatrice is a pretty lethal creature. It can kill you by looking at you, touching you, and sometimes breathing on you. Medieval bestiaries reported that the weasel is the only animal immune to the glance of the cockatrice. The two ways to slay the beast is by it hearing a rooster crow, and having it look at itself in the mirror.   Leviathan- Leviathan is a sea monster referenced in the Hebrew bible in the Book of Job, Psalms, and Isaiah. In the Book of Job, Leviathan is a reflection of the older Lotan, a primeval monster defeated at the hands of the god Hadad in a very “Zeus slaying Typhon” kind of way. Some scholars have interpreted Leviathan as referring to large aquatic creatures, namely the crocodile. Leviathan later became used as “great well” and also a general term for “sea monsters”. In modern Hebrew, the word simply translates to “whale”. The Tanakh mentions Leviathan six times, and is generally referred to as an ocean creature that isn’t harmful, but is instead part of God’s creation. Later Jewish sources described Leviathan as a dragon who lives over the sources of the deep and along with Behemoth, will be served up to the righteous at the end of time. In the Book of Enoch, Leviathan is described as a female monster dwelling in the watery abyss. When the midrash (explanations of the Tanakh) were being composed, it was believed that God originally produced a male and female leviathan, but ended up slaying the female to prevent the creature from destroying the world and reserved her flesh for the banquet that will be given to the righteous upon the coming of the Messiah. In Christian mythology, Leviathan has come to be used as an image of Satan that endangers God’s creatures and God’s creation by threatening it with being eaten, and upheaval. The creature is described as a demon of envy, and one of the seven Princes of Hell, corresponding with the seven deadly sins. Leviathan has become associated with the visual motif of the Hellmouth, who is a monstrous animal into whose mouth the damned appear at the Last Judgement. Revised versions of the Bible have suggested that leviathan may be a name for a crocodile and that Behemoth is a hippo, and Young Earth Creationists have identified these two as dinosaurs. Like I said before, we started using LEviathan to refer to any sea monster around the early 17th century. Great whales, Kracken, whatnot what have you. Leviathan represents the Element of Water and the direction of West in the Satanic Bible, where he is also listed as one of the Four Crown Princes of Hell.

This podcast show most often focuses on refuting pseudoscience with real science, but it rarely sets out to make a positive case for real science. This episode is one of those rarer ones where I have used an unlikely source - youn-Earth creationists - to explain the case for why Earth is round and not flat.

Earthlings, for various reasons, take "the circle of the earth" in Isaiah 40:22 to be a reference to a spherical earth. This would mean that the ancient Israelites of the eighth century BC knew that the earth was spherical and not flat. This perspective shows up in arguments from both Young Earth Creationists and from those wanting to argue an absolutely literal reading of the biblical text, usually to support the idea that God revealed modern scientific facts and data to the ancient Israelites. But did God spoke about a planet unfamiliar to our sciences? Could this be the reason for the many perspectives of the Earth we've seen? And if so, has the secret of the shape of the Earth finally been discovered?
