What’s Your Emergency
Saying Goodbye to Ted Setla

What’s Your Emergency

This week on What's Your Emergency the emergency is that we just found out a good friend died. The tears of sorrow, the laughter of good memories and the need to sometimes just sit quietly by a friend as they grieve are all topics for this week.   Moving forward though, make sure of the following: Your living will and other documents are on file and good to go Determine a family PIO, someone who can be the gateway to information through good and bad Grieving alone is rarely good, find someone to listen, help...anything Ted only really dies if his ideas die with him The generosity and kindness shown to our families by Ted Setla is immeasurable. His constant drive to do better, to be better, rubbed off on many and we're proud to include ourselves in that group.

Talk About Cancer

Jason spoke lovingly about his memories of his mom - who battled three types of cancer for over a decade - and the ways in which he continues to remember and honor her legacy since she died in 2019. He also shared some interesting stories about kilts and prostate cancer awareness. What a storyteller Jason was. There was literally a story to illustrate every point he made in our conversation! It was really interesting to hear how Jason's experience as an officer for more than 20 years has influenced his perspectives about life and death. One part that stuck with me was how Jason didn't make it in time to see his mom before she died, which was so crushing but I could see that Jason was able to move forward from that because he had an important job to do - which was to MC the celebration of life she planned. I mean, what a gift she had given to Jason so that he knew exactly what he needed to do to honor her life and get closure. And then there were the actual gifts for the family as well! What an amazing way to let her family continue to experience her love beyond her death. I had a mini epiphany from our conversation. If you recall, at one point I was talking to Jason about not letting what happened during the last few months of my dad's life consume my memories of him, because it was a small part and shouldn't define his life and who he was as a person. When I thought about that more after our conversation, I realized that only when I was able to move on from those imageries of suffering in my head did the unexpected moments of breakdown start to happen less. Maybe it just took time for those imageries to become more blurry and be less painful in my mind. I do often wonder at what point will the unexpected moments of intense emotions stop occurring. Is it 5 years? 10 year? Or maybe never? I don't know yet. You can find Jason at: What's Your Emergency podcast: http://wyeradio.com/Kilted to Kick Cancer: https://www.kiltedtokickcancer.org/A couple of books Jason recommended for people who want to better understand the experience of someone who is facing their own mortality. Chasing Daylight by Paul KalanithiWhen Breath Becomes Air by Eugene O'KellyPlease subscribe to the podcast if you would like to hear more stories from cancer survivors, caregivers, and family members. Oof. That's a rough subject line, right? Lord knows we as a species aren't big on considering our own mortality, but for those of us working in the world of First Responders, we really should be required to do just that. This week we tackle a confusing topic: legal documents. Wendy K Reynolds is an expert in Estate Planning and, as we learn from this episode of What's Your Emergency, an accomplished lawyer, DA and judge. In this episode, we discuss: What documents every first responder should have prepared How to make sure you're dealing with a person who cares Why having an estate plan doesn't require an actual estate like you think How Wendy was found half dead in a car crash that killed her parents and 14 month old sister

We speak with two powerful artists: Nell Painter, a prominent historian and author of the New York Times Bestseller, The History of White People, didn't do what many people do when they retire. At 64, after retiring from Princeton University, she entered art school, receiving a BFA from Mason Goss School of Art at Rutgers, and then heading to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design for an MFA in painting. There, she developed a new appreciation for formalism, while coming to terms with the fact that age was the defining element of how her young classmates saw – or didn't see – her. She'll be speaking at the upcoming Bay Area Book Festival about her memoir, Old In Art School, a National Critics' Circle Award Finalist, and about her understanding of how race, gender and age affect who gets to be called an artist. She'll also be joining a panel on The Legacy of Adrienne Rich and the Shape of Our Feminist Future. BBQ Becky & Permit Patty go on trial! Jovelyn Richards, host of The Space Between Us on Women's Magazine, brings her play, 9-1-1 What's Your Emergency? The Verdict to La Pena next weekend, April 26-27. The first act of 9-1-1 What's Your Emergency? premiered at La Peña Cultural Center in September 2018 as an artistic response to the local 9-1-1 calls that made BBQ Becky and Permit Patty infamous on a national level. In this second act, framed as a courtroom drama, Jovelyn asks, should these calls be seen as hate crimes? You – the audience – get to weigh in on the verdict. The show will be performed with a multicultural cast and a jazz orchestra. In our interview, we discuss how sexism blends with white supremacy to lead white women to call the cops on Black and Brown people's expressions of love and intimacy. Jovelyn's shows always sell out so get your tickets early. The post Who Gets to Be Seen as an Artist? appeared first on KPFA.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1. Terah J. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYUG9Qttgq4 If you want to seize opportunities like the wealthy, you will need to learn how to save money like the wealthy. Building a financial system is a lot like barrel racing.Far away from the roar of audiences, the outcome of the race is determined by the hours of preparation and conditioning spent outside the ring, out of the public eye, before the race.Likewise, in building true wealth, developing a savings plan is the preparation and conditioning it takes to succeed. Then, you'll protect yourself with insurance and legal protection.  Here, you'll create the right canopy of protection in your financial life.  This second stage encompasses all aspects of the Infinite Banking Concept, a key cashflow strategy that secures your access to capital, maximizing your control, by allowing you to be your own banker. Finally, you'll put your money to work and get it to make more by investing in cash-flowing assets to build freedom and leave a rich legacy. Everything I Needed to Know I Learned from Equestrian Barrel Racing As a teen, I rode horses.  I got into competitive racing in speed and agility games like barrel racing, pole weaving, and keyhole. Just about everything I needed to know about life, I learned from the process of training to win in the ring. Where Winning HAPPENS The climax of barrel racing was the high-adrenaline, crowd-cheering, dirt-flying 28 seconds careening around the cloverleaf pattern of the barrel racing course.  Or it was the 11 seconds spent in the ring flashing through the pole-weaving course. I lived for that part.  The moment of truth.  It's where the winning happened. From a spectator's vantage point, it would be so easy to think it was the only part that mattered. Where Winning Is CREATED However, far more critical to the outcome were the hours upon hours of training and preparation. To perform well, conditioning was essential. There were warm-ups and cool-downs at a brisk trot.  We raced for miles upon miles across varied terrain to build endurance and stamina.  There were hundreds of hours of rides through the fields and forests, on trails, through swamps, and over fallen logs as we built agility and light-footedness. We took hundreds of practice runs at all paces, focusing on the fundamentals.  There were lurching starts,

As public services come under increasing pressure from government cuts the demand for documentaries about them is reflected in the number of programmes on TV. Last week, ITV's Inside London Fire Brigade featured previously unheard accounts of fire fighters from inside Grenfell Tower. In the same week, Channel 4's 24 hours in A&E returned for its 13th series, alongside 999 What's Your Emergency which is in its fourth; earlier in July, the second series of Hospital was screened on BBC Two. TV executives Simon Dickson and Ed Coulthard discuss why programmes about public services are so popular and what is involved in turning hours of documentary material into compulsive viewing. Writer Damian Barr champions Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City novels for Front Row's Queer Icons series.Sally Hawkins stars as Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis, in new biopic Maudie. The actress discusses Maud's remarkable life in a remote part of Nova Scotia living in very basic conditions while suffering from juvenile arthritis, her unlikely romance with local fisherman Everett Lewis played by Ethan Hawke in the film, and Maud's joyful spirit that comes through in her paintings. Josette Bushell-Mingo talks about her one-woman show 'Nina - a Story about Me and Nina Simone' in which she explores Nina Simone's musical and political influence not only on the young Josette but on the American civil rights movement of the 1960s and onwards. If you ever call 911, you’re probably in a bit of a panic, and don’t really care who answers as long as they answer quickly Ambient noise from police HQ Menlo Park Police this is John. (1. 05:00) When a call comes in, John answers. My name is John Murphy. I work for the Menlo Park Police Department. I am a dispatcher here. I have been in this field for 28 years. (1. 00:00) Ambient noise from Police HQ. Act I: Spring Romantic ideal Call comes in: Language/Stress Music/Hum of John and Office. He takes the call. If necessary, he uses a 10-code language to dispatch patrolman. I have no idea what’s going on, but John explains, There is a whole 10 code 11 code. He said 1186 means he is making a traffic stop in the 800 block of Sharron Park Drive. She recorded the location and told him to go to the licence plate. That is what he did and he gave a color of the vehicle he stopped. That officer just said I’m 10-8 I’ll be in route to Robert 50. 10-8 means I am done with what I’m doing and he is going to the other officer to help out. (1. 03:00) Even when John’s not on a call, he is always “on”. His shift is always one call away from someone’s crisis. You just don’t know what’s going to happen next. (2. 29.18)
