Chinese authorities have shut down several social media accounts for spreading false information about the military, including fabricated stories about Chinese warships sinking foreign vessels and prolonged electronic warfare in the South China Sea, according to the Cyberspace Administration of China. In a news release on Monday, the administration disclosed a series of cases in which some personal media accounts "speculated and fabricated false information, and engaged in speculative hype". Personal media accounts refer to non-institutional content publishers on social media platforms such as WeChat, Weibo or video-sharing platform Douyin. They publish news or information even though they are not operated or approved by the government or any other authoritative entities. According to the news release, the primary violations made by the owners of these self-media accounts include concocting military rumors, distorting military history, tarnishing the image of the armed forces and misinterpreting military policies. It said that these accounts "seriously misled public perception and affected the image of the armed forces and military personnel". The release noted that some social media accounts exploited people's patriotic sentiments by posting fake stories. For instance, two WeChat public accounts spread rumors about Chinese naval vessels sinking four foreign warships, it said. Some accounts used splicing, editing and other techniques to create sensational military stories, fabricating incidents such as a "12-hour electronic war in the South China Sea" and "border clashes". Additionally, the news release pointed out that some accounts, under the pretext of uncovering secrets, engaged in "historical nihilism", distorting facts about the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53). For example, some accounts on the Quora-like knowledge-sharing platform Zhihu falsely claimed that "only a small portion of Japanese troops were killed by guerrilla warfare in China." The release said that these "erroneous opinions" distorted historical facts and created misperceptions. Meanwhile, it also said that some self-media accounts published content that tarnished the image of the military. A user on video-sharing platform Bilibili "maliciously" posted confidential information such as the names, positions and ID numbers of active-duty military personnel, according to the CAC. Two Douyin accounts shared a fake story about how "a son joined the army against his family's wishes, only for his mother to receive his ashes a few years later". Other short-video publishers spread false information, claiming that "graduates from the National University of Defense Technology could not find any employer willing to hire them a year after graduation". Furthermore, the news release highlighted that some social media accounts distorted and misinterpreted military-related policies, becoming key targets for a crackdown. Some accounts speculated and spread false information related to the civilian personnel system, and some even cited rumors about "the military's involvement in financial wars". Others incited negative sentiments toward the military among netizens, the release said. For example, some accounts hyped up rumors that "maintaining an army consumes massive funds", and called for "cutting 200,000 troops to ease fiscal pressure", thereby stirring up conflicts between the military and the public. It stressed some accounts misled public opinion by making inappropriate comparisons between military and civilian universities during the college entrance examination and recruitment seasons. The release also revealed several cases involving online shopping platforms. Some Taobao businesses used specific military-related terms and logos to sell counterfeit products, which were labeled "military-exclusive supplies". Certain Taobao merchants used military images without authorization to conduct malicious marketing campaigns. Officials from the military and local authorities said they will continue to resolutely crack down on self-media accounts that engage in illegal activities related to the military, and strictly investigate and punish those who publish false information, according to the release. They also welcomed participation and reports from relevant departments and netizens to jointly create a positive online environment regarding military affairs. concoctv.

James Hull from Hullx and co-host of China Tech Investor podcast joined us in a discussion on whether we should replace Baidu with Bytedance in the BAT China. Starting with the question, James dived deep into the business structures of Baidu and Bytedance and examined whether Baidu has lost their edge as one of the three tech giants of China. In the same conversation, James offered his perspectives on how Bytedance will replace Baidu in the future. Here are the interesting show notes and links to the discussion (with time-stamps included): James Hull (@jameshullx, LinkedIn), Co-host of China Tech Investor podcast and Founder of Hullx [0:21] Since you have last appeared on the podcast, what have you been up to? [0:50] Should we replace Baidu with Bytedance in the BAT? [0:56] BAT (Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent) & TMD (Toutiao, Meituan-dianping, Didi)  Let’s start with Baidu. How has Baidu performed as a public company for the past decade? [2:08] What are the key businesses of Baidu? (iQiyi is spun off as a separate company)? [3:27] Baidu's advances in AI [4:56] and in the intelligent audio input interface and speaker sector. [5:42] Is Baidu dependent on the advertising business similar to Google in the US? [6:51] Comparison between Baidu and Bytedance in terms of user information feeds [9:30] Bytedance's advantage with user feeds and recommendations through Douyin and Toutiao [11:51] Bytedance has been growing exponentially with a 75B valuation from their recent round with SoftBank, now the most valuable startup in the world followed by Didi. How are they performing as a business? [15:09] What are the key revenue drivers for Bytedance? How are they compared to Alibaba and Tencent? [18:08] What are Baidu’s competitive advantages that you think may allow them to stay competitive within the BAT? [24:30] How Baidu's search engine competes against Google and the rest of Chinese search engines. [28:24] Should we just replace Baidu with Bytedance in the BAT? [31:09] Interesting Chinese answer on the question for this podcast (in Chinese) in Zhihu (similar to Reddit and Quora in the US) which Carol has referenced and mentioned in the discussion.  Closing [37:24] Recommendation for a book, movie, podcast, or any consumable content?[37:24] James' recommendation: "I love capitalism" by Ken Langone , "The Great Rebalancing" by Michael Pettis Carol's recommendation: Louis Cha's or Jin Yong's martial arts novels How does our audience find you? Elliott also writes for several leading online publications which is how I first came across him. Earlier this year he wrote a piece for Technode about Zhihu, China’s popular knowledge sharing platform which started off as a Q& A platform but has evolved into a hybrid of Quora, Patreon, Coursera, Twitter and Linkedin. His article shared how many people, especially professionals and academics, are leveraging their knowledge to grow a following on the platform, and now thanks to new features, they are able to monetize their popularity through paid courses and live streams. I think Zhihu is extremely underrated, especially in Western media, so I had to have Elliott on so he could share more about it. Besides talking about Zhihu, we also discuss what it is like being the only foreigner writing for the popular Chinese business news site Huxiu and how it has helped position him as a thought leader and attract business leads.  This episode is a little bit different than previous ones but still very much related to Chinese influencers and growing influence in china, so I know you guys are going to like it.     Guest: Elliott Zaagman LinkedIn WeChat: ezaagman Zhihu: @ELL小查   Host: Lauren Hallanan Website: laurenhallanan.com LinkedIn Instagram: @laurenleren   Mentioned in the Episode: Article: From “knowledge hub” to “opportunity facilitator”: The development of Zhihu Huxiu Technode supchina China Tech Talk 31: China tech trends in 2017, part 1   Thanks to our sponsor PARKLU: www.parklu.com   For additional information and show notes head over to www.chinainfluencermarketing.com   If you like this podcast and know someone who might find it interesting, please share!
