10 Clear Signs You Might Have a Protein Deficiency

Bright Side

How to Recognize Protein Deficiency. Protein plays a vital role in the daily functioning of our bodies. If you don't have enough of it, your body will suffer. According to UN data, around 1 billion people worldwide are protein deficient. How do you know if you're one of them? You'd better watch out for these 10 signs and symptoms related to protein deficiency so you'll know when there's a problem. To make things clear, when we say “not enough protein,” we mean somewhere under 56 g for men and 46 g for women per day. For kids, it varies from 19 g to 34 g depending on their age. This figure may also vary if you are pregnant or ill. According to the US Department of Agriculture, you can calculate a more specific amount using a simple formula. Try to eat about 0.36 g of protein for every pound of your weight. TIMESTAMPS Food cravings 0:41 Loss of muscle mass and joint pain 1:54 Skin and nail problems 2:41 Hair loss 3:24 Fatty liver 4:11 Increased risk of bone fractures 4:39 Sleep deprivation 5:19 Headaches and frequent illnesses 5:48 Swollen feet 6:18 Brain fog 6:38 Bonus: How to get enough protein 7:12 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY -If you always feel hungry and have cravings for food and snacks, it may be because of a low-protein, high-carb, and sugar-filled diet. -When you're unable to build muscle mass (even if you're working out), this can lead to muscle waste or atrophy. It can also make you constantly feel tired and gain fat. -A protein deficiency can result in weak and brittle nails. In a few cases, people might observe white bands and brownish spots on their nails. A protein deficiency can affect the skin as well because protein enables cell regeneration, produces new cells, and replaces dead ones. -If you don't get enough nutrients, your hair may thin and fade. This happens because the body stops using protein for nonessential things, like hair growth, in an effort to preserve it. -A fatty liver is one of the most common symptoms of a protein deficiency. If left untreated, it can cause fatty liver disease, which leads to inflammation, liver scarring, and potential liver failure. -Just as with your muscles, a low intake of protein can also affect your bones. Not having enough protein leads to a weakening of the bones, thus increasing the risk of bone fractures. -If you have trouble sleeping or suffer from sleep deprivation, it's likely linked to a protein deficiency. -There can be multiple reasons for your headaches, and 2 reasons are anemia and low blood sugar levels. You can blame a lack of protein for both. -Edema is a condition in which extra fluid builds up in your body and makes your legs swell. Harvard Health Publications links low protein levels and edema. -If you experience a lack of motivation, poor memory, or trouble learning anything new, it's a sign that you are protein deficient. -To get enough protein, balance your meat, dairy, fish, and egg intake with healthy vegetarian and vegan proteins. Make beans, nuts and seeds (such as almonds, flax, chia, and hemp), spinach, and broccoli your new best friends. There are people you meet in life, whether through words, groups, from a community or work that redefine how you interact with and see life. For me, it started with words; a little book I found one rainy Sunday morning at the bookstore-- Be Like Water. I flipped through this tiny paperback, it's first sentence reading, "More than 70% of the Earth's surface is water. Every living thing is composed of water." I was intrigued so I bought it. Little did I know that book would help me through some difficult times in my life. Whether finding my center, conquering fear, channeling my energy or freeing my mind of anger and guilt. So back to the store I went and purchased his other book that I relied on heavily, Bow to Life. Dr. Cardillo is a best-selling author in the fields of health, mind-body-spirit, and psychology. His books, which include The 12 Rules of Attention: How to Avoid Screw-ups, Free Up Headspace, Do More and Be More at Work; Body Intelligence - Harness Your Body's Energies for Your Best Life; The Five Seasons; Your Playlist Can Change Your Life; Can I Have Your Attention? How to Think Fast, Find Your Focus and Sharpen Your Concentration; Bow to Life; and the body-energy classic, Be Like Water  have inspired people of all ages and backgrounds worldwide. Foreign language editions of his work have appeared in German, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Arabic, Turkish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, and Indian. He co-writes books for Harvard Health Publications. Joseph teaches workshops in Health and Wellness at various colleges and institutions. He is a Research Associate at the Mind-Body Science Institute and writes a health column for Live Happy Magazine. He is a black belt martial arts specialist and a master teacher of Chinese and Filipino martial systems and philosophy.   Podcast: Available Now!

So in this episode I wanted to put a bit more context as to why sucking sour candy could work to stop panic attacks. Or not. Or not for the long term.   Here is how it started. I have news feeds for anxiety. This story popped up.   Delish is a food recipe and kitchen gadget website. I've seen videos on YouTube. I was confused when I saw the story about sour candy and panic attacks.   It didn't match their usual beat. Sometime that can lead to good stuff. Like a fishing website that reviews a movie about Vets, fishing and PTSD.    It isn't an instant reject for me unless it is one of those way past NC-17 websites, but my radar is on high alert.    Publisher these days they need to draw people to the website. Delish saw a fit with there mission. They did have a series called Suck It Up. They would ask celebrities questions and if they refused to answer they would have to eat an increasing strong sour candy.    So this was in the Delish wheelhouse. Kinda. They got the story from Tik Tok.   USA Today did a story with more info from mental health professionals. That is how Delish found out about it.   As far as our neck of the woods is concern, this could be thought of as a form of grounding or interrupting the signals that generated the panic attack.    There are a lot of them. It is not treatment.   Nope. Not at all.    But it might give you time to breath, get out of the room or recalibrate.   So in this episode I wanted to put a bit more context as to why it could work and how there are limits to how effective it can be.      If you need support contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-8255, the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386 or text “START” to 741-741. Resources Mentioned:    Anxiety and Stress Disorders and a guide on Stress Management from Harvard Health Publications.    Tips to Manage Your Stress and Anxiety from ADAA.org The company that produces Warheads is called Impact Confections. You can get an idea of some of their candy products. This is not an endorsement, there are other companies that have sour and extreme sour candies and drinks. What are The Health Benefits of Using a Sauna?

Saunas offer a wide range of health benefits According to Harvard Health Publications, Mayans have used sweat houses as early as 3,000 years ago. Today 1 in 3 Finns still use them. The citizens of the United States have also seen the benefits and have sold over a million to date. The majority of people use saunas for relaxation and cardiovascular health. Others use them to improve circulation. You can purchase a sauna or visit a bathhouse, gym, or spas who offer them to their paying customers. What is a Sauna? A sauna is a heated room that holds a temperature between 70° to 100° Celsius or 158° to 212° Fahrenheit and can raise your surface temperature from 40° Celsius or 104° Fahrenheit. Traditional Finnish saunas usually use dry heat, with a relative humidity that is often between 10 and 20 percent. In other sauna types, the moisture is higher. Turkish-style saunas, for example, involve a greater level of humidity.Medical News Today Sweating can occur when your skin temperature rises, and your heart rate will increase in an attempt to keep your body cool. Each person's body will lose a different amount of sweat depending on the time spent in the sauna and the overall shape of the body. Types of Saunas include: Can Saunas Be Harmful? "Much of the information about sauna safety comes from Finland. A 16-month study of 1,631 heart attacks in Helsinki found that just 1.8% developed within 3 hours of taking a sauna. In another investigation of all 6,175 sudden deaths that occurred in one year, only 1.7% occurred within 24 hours of taking a sauna — and many of those were related to alcohol. In Finland, taking saunas is a national pastime. So, do these results apply to people in other parts of the world who sometimes use saunas? Canadian researchers investigated sauna safety in 16 patients with well-documented heart disease. They compared the effects of a 15-minute sauna with a standard treadmill stress test. None of the patients developed chest pain, abnormal heart rhythms or ECG changes with either type of stress. Heart scans did show impaired blood flow to the heart muscles of most patients, but the sauna-induced changes were milder than the exercise-induced abnormalities. Saunas appear safe for patients with stable coronary artery disease. A small study from Japan suggested that two weeks of daily saunas may even improve vascular function in patients with mildly damaged hearts that cannot pump blood normally (stable heart failure). Still, heart patients should check with their doctors before using saunas. People who can perform moderate exercise, such as walking for 30 minutes or climbing 3 or 4 flights of stairs without stopping, will likely get an okay. But patients with poorly controlled blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, unstable angina, and advanced heart failure or heart valve disease will be advised to stay cool." -health.harvard.edu Sauna Health Benefits Use a sauna to cleanse your body Saunas produce a dry heat which has excellent effects on the body. Because the body temperature rises, your heart rate goes up and your pulse increases by about 30%. That means your blood is being circulated and pumped twice the average amount of times per minute. Circulation Our bodies become alive when we have good circulation and blood flow. Every part functions and performs at a higher capacity including your muscles, tendons, and joints, making the number one benefit of Saunas the improvement of circulation. Internal Cleaner A second health benefit has to do with purifying your body. Human beings need to cleanse out harmful toxins inside of the body and sweating is the best and most natural way to do that. "Mixed with your sweat is a substance called urea, for which urine is named. In a paper published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, researchers estimated up to 1.12 milligrams (mg) of urea is dissolved in every cubic cen...

Living a Healthy Lifestyle VS a Positive Body Image Mindset Kenneth Rippetoe OneWiththeWater.orgLike the Chicken and the Egg, which came first? Is it a positive body image mindset or living a healthy lifestyle? Why can’t we have both? People show significant improvement in social well-being and mental health when they live a healthy lifestyle. By facing your fears through a meditative exercise like swimming, you can be coached into creating a positive mindset that will help you truly want to live a healthy lifestyle. First, what happens to our health physically, emotionally, and spiritually when we're 50+ pounds overweight? The tricky part is that once our bodies are carrying extra weight, it becomes exponentially harder to lose it. We lose the ability to process calories correctly and the weight comes off slower. Plus, according to research gathered by Harvard Health Publications, being moderately overweight more than doubles the risk of over FIFTY different health conditions, including depression.Hosted by Dr. John Huber, Mainstream Mental Health Radio (featured on the Mental Health News Radio network) covers today’s top headlines pertaining to psychology. More than 100 million Americans struggle with chronic pain, according to one Institute of Medicine estimate, at an annual cost of as much as $635 billion in treatment and lost productivity. Further, the misuse of potent opioid painkillers, while increasing risk of addiction and abuse, can confuse the conversation around appropriate chronic pain management. This Forum brought together a panel of experts to discuss the causes, treatment and impact of chronic pain, exploring the neuroscience behind the pain experience. The panelists examined how clinicians can best serve their patients, highlighting the recommendations of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' recent National Pain Strategy. The Forum also looked at myriad pain management options, including marijuana and mindfulness meditation. And panelists examined relevant pain care policies, including prescription monitoring program regulations, drug development and funding for research. People die each day waiting on lists for lifesaving organs, and the rise of chronic diseases such as diabetes only increases the demand. With the need for scientific innovation and donor support becoming ever more critical, this Forum explored biomedical advances that promise to address the scarcity, as well as the efforts of medical leaders, advocates and policymakers to reduce the numbers waiting for transplants. Through 3-D printing, scaffolding, chips and other innovations, scientists made extraordinary strides in tissue engineering and developing artificial organs. This program looked at the potential of advances like these, along with the ongoing role of current donation programs; ethics of matching and allocation policies; controversies around buying and selling organs; and approaches such as “presumed consent”, used in some countries to increase supply, where patients are presumed to have given permission to donate their organs, unless they have explicitly opted out.
