On this week's episode of In The Circle, we're diving into another powerful inquiry from someone who traveled with me to one of our Recovery 2.0 retreats in England. Today's guest, Perry, asks: How can I push through my resistance to change? During our England retreat, we discussed something I call resistance training. When I mention resistance training, I'm talking about engaging in activities that naturally bring up our own resistance. I'm referring to – the voice that says, "I'll do it tomorrow." The practice of resistance training is about purposefully doing those things that challenge us, allowing us to break through that resistance and emerge stronger. In Recovery 2.0, we emphasize this training to help us become our best selves. Perry also asks me about the practices I personally use to overcome my resistance and show up fully in life. Through this episode, we'll explore the mind, body, and spirit, and discuss ways we can all set up the conditions to blow through our resistance to the things we know are good for us. This, I believe, is key to finding daily fulfillment and moving forward on what I call the path of discovery. Tommy Discusses:How I overcome resistance to change in my lifeThe powerful tool of accountability Building awareness around your own resistance How you can push past limitations and get out of your own wayWould you like to be a guest on the In The Circle Podcast? During National Recovery Month, we are re-releasing this classic episode in which Dr. Sabrina Segal interviews addiction expert Dr. Nzinga Harrison about the need to address stigma and misconceptions surrounding the topic of addiction. A well-respected physician and educator, Dr. Harrison is the host of the In Recovery weekly podcast by Lemonada Media, in which she engages a large audience on all things addiction with the goal of leading with compassion, evidence and reducing stigma. Sometimes I wish the world were a little smaller, so I could meet my guests in person. Adriana is one of those people who I'd love to spend time with. This, for me, was a beautiful, insightful, honest and tender conversation about humanity, addiction, love, capacity to show up in the face off death, or not, and finding our feet again, literally, after profound loss. #cancer #addictionandloss #death #grief #movement #dancinggrief Biography Adriana Marchione has been involved in the arts for over thirty years as a filmmaker, dancer, photographer and is internationally recognized in her work as a movement-based expressive arts therapist and educator. Since 2002, Adriana has taught at the renowned Tamalpa Institute, WHEAT Institute in Canada and founded her own wellness center in San Francisco. She has presented her creative healing approach, with a focus on addiction, eating disorders, trauma and grief, at festivals, conferences, and treatment centers including South by Southwest, Studio le théâtre du Corps in Paris and the prestigious Commonwealth Club of California. Adriana created When the Fall Comes in 2014, a performance project that culminated in a short film based on her own life story encountering intimate grief and loss. When the Fall Comes was translated into French and Korean and streamed in universities across America and Canada through Kanopy. She has been in recovery from alcoholism for 29 years and was awarded Artist of the Year by ‘In Recovery' magazine in 2016. Adriana recently released The Creative High, an award-winning documentary film featuring nine artists with substance use disorder who are transformed by the creative process. Find more about Adriana's work, www.adrianamarchione.com, and her film work at www.whenthefallcomes.com and www.thecreativehigh.com.
In a military objective, the unity and cohesion of command are crucial. In Recovery, we need multiple commanders with a faithful and united effort to achieve a necessary goal. The current structure of treatment fixes the fundamental issue. The recovery chain consists of the client, the support group, and the helping professionals. The end goal should be to reduce the helping professional's ego, increase the client's esteem, and reduce the support group's confusion.

The team at In Recovery wanted to share with you a preview of another Lemonada Media series that they know you'll want to tune in for. The 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education paved the way for racial integration in public schools. But there's an unspoken consequence of this historic moment. Estimates show 38 thousand Black teachers were fired throughout the integration. This means, the number of Black educators in our public schools dramatically decreased during this time. And that number has never gone back up. This has left a huge void in our public schools. That's why it's so important we uplift Black leaders working in education today. After 1954, a new podcast from Lemonada Media hosted by Aimée Eubanks Davis, is out now wherever you get your podcasts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is it possible that all of us are, or were, addicted on some level to the need for approval? Fundamentally, what really IS any addiction? What's the difference between being clean & sober vs. being In Recovery? If you've ever been addicted to substances or behaviors like sex or gambling, were you an addict before you even started "using"? These are just a few of the fascinating questions that we explore in this episode of Tough talks with guest, Marc Schmallen, Founder/CEO of Choice Recovery Path. This conversation went in an entirely different direction than I had anticipated, and thank God for that. Marc started using before he was 10 years old. He spent years homeless on the streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Now he has done his healing and is in service to those who would benefit profoundly from doing their own. This week we're rewinding an episode with Cicelia Como on how the body is held hostage to trauma. Be sure to listen, take note and go to the next level of healing and freedom While everyone experiences trauma, not everyone is able to bounce back from it. Trauma, unfortunately rewires the brain and affects how you respond to different things. On this week of the In Recovery series, Ramesha Nicole sits down with Licensed Professional Counselor Cicelia Como of Capacity Awakened, PLLC in Houston, TX about how the body keeps the score of trauma. During this conscious conversation, Cicelia helps listeners to understand the role that unhealed trauma plays in the body's fight or flight responses, as well steps you can take to break free. She says that by creating an awareness to how the trauma continues to show up in every area of your life, you will be able to create the action plan that is tailored specifically to you. Action Plan To Breaking Free From The Hostage Create an awareness of the inner debt to see what keeps showing up. Be aware of who you are in the present. Practice mindfulness. Create the life that you want to have. Practice self-care Get accountability partners. Be aware of who you're talking to Truth For Freedom Questions: What does mean get real in order to experience freedom? To get real is creating an awareness. Once your capacity is awakened then you can experience freedom. My name is Cicelia Como and the truth about debt is is that it's things that's keeping you from going to the next level of your life. We're still on an intermission, but as promised, here is this week's Intermission Rewind episode. This week's Intermission Rewind Episode is from the In Recovery Series where Ramesha Nicole sat down with Shenelle Dixon author of The Healing Side of Hurt who says that "healing needs help and hurt needs attention." HURT NEEDS ATTENTION & HEALING NEEDS HELP If you're ready to go to your next level of healing and freedom, then you're going to have to pay attention to your hurt and give help to what needs to be healed. On Ep. 1 of our BRAND NEW series “In Recovery”, Ramesha Nicole sits down with Author, Minister and Life Coach Shenell Dixon about the The Healing Side of Hurt.” She says that “You OWE it to yourself to heal.” You purpose and destiny are waiting on you to heal. What are you waiting for? It's time to go get your healing!! The Healing Side of Hurt Take-Aways: Why is healing so necessary to getting to your next level of purpose and freedom? *Healing is necessary because it's apart of the process When you choose to be stagnated, you stop God's work “We want to get to the other side of glory, but we don't want to go through the process.”-Ramesha Nicole “Hurt needs attention and healing needs help.”-Shenell Dixon “How do you turn it so that you do not become what you despise?-Shenell Dixon “You have to put a back door to something before you start something else so that you don't take that into your next.”-Shenell Dixon “You are responsible for your own healing. You may not be responsible for the hurt, but you are responsible for your healing.”-Shenell Dixon “Once you have a taste of freedom, you never want to be bound again.”-Shenell Dixon So tell us how you go to this this phase of the healing side of hurt How does holding on to hurt manifest in your finances? “You need something to pacify you. Be ok with being alone in your own silence.”-Shenell Dixon “You're either going to deal with it, or it will deal with you. Paul discusses all the things that he should be doing to get a good night's sleep, he examines what sleep actually is, the sleep cycle, and the numerous benefits it can bring, both physically and mentally. As an old timer in Recovery said, "Doing the next right thing is important, but doing the last right thing is equally important." During a small retreat, six people in recovery discovered the way their childhood trauma played a part in the addictions they had. The retreat and the histories of each of the participants were part of the documentary Uprooting Addiction. This week, Nzinga sits down with two of the creators of the film, social worker and addiction specialist Hope Payson, and filmmaker Tory Jadow. Representative Leslie Herod knows what it's like to have a family member struggle with addiction and incarceration. But she also knows that this is more a failure of a greater system than a failure of a sibling, and that’s informed the policy and programs she’s spearheaded around mental health, substance misuse, and the criminal justice system. Nzinga and Representative Herod talk about how current systems of policing and treating substance misuse not only bypass treating mental health, but often make it worse. In this episode of 'Beat Your Addictions' we interview pornography addiction expert, speaker and author Joshua Shea. Joshua Shea is the father of two amazing children and the husband to a wonderful wife. He and his family have a menagerie of cats and dogs and reside in Central Maine, where he was born and raised. Today he works as an author and public speaker, sharing his story and educating others about addiction. Each of his books are available for purchase on Amazon and can be found under the ‘Get Help' tab on the main menu of paddictrecovery.com. Joshua believes that if we, as a society, can begin to talk more about pornography addiction and mental health, people may be able to address their addictions before they devolve to the unhealthy and criminal places where his very own hit rock bottom. For years, on the outside, people only saw him as a successful magazine publisher, film festival founder and city councilor. Joshua hid his mental health issues, pornography and alcohol addictions from the world. The end to this façade came in 2013 after engaging a teen girl in an online chatroom. For this action, he served six months in jail and credits this experience to being the wake-up call needed. Joshua credits his higher-power for giving him the strength to fix his very broken self. Like most in recovery, Joshua understands the issues better than the non-addict. However, he does not wish his stories, experiences, thoughts and opinions be misinterpreted as any definitive answers. Does he consider himself a pornography addiction expert? At this point, yes. Unfortunately, it's not hard to be a pornography addiction expert these days. He does believe that what makes him an expert is that he has a multitude of third-hand knowledge from research and interactions with so many pornography addicts.
