There's so much talk about building future ready organizations, but how do we know what the future looks like and build for it with intention? Understanding how we work, how work is changing, and how it can be designed is both a study in technology and in human psychology. Technology enhances AND limits our imagination when it comes to imagining how organizations can enable human performance. Humans, on the other hand, are the most resilient and adaptable organizational resources you have. People can literally change faster than technology, but their core human truths aren't as trendy as you think. The big question is: Do people NEED technology to perform, or does it get in the way? How does technology become a human performance multiplier? Steve Hunt is an avid student of the history of work, the role of technology, and the interplay of human psyche. If anyone can connect the dots, he can. We waited patiently for his book launch to bring him to you, and here we are! We welcomed Steve Hunt, PhD, Chief Expert of Technology and Work at SAP, and author of just-published Talent Tectonics to our Now of Work Community. Take a listen! This week, Andrew of the incomparable Keanu-cast Cool Breeze Over the Mountain is here to praise the biggest game-changer in the entire Bond franchise. Like, no one was ready for what Barbara Broccoli was planning in 2006 when she finally got the rights to tell James Bond’s origin story. We’ve already talked about the travesty of the 1967 screwball comedy disaster, but this - this movie stands alone as a pretty damn good movie without any of the Bond baggage attached. There’s an origin story, breathtaking stunt work, a fully-realized set of characters including a cheeky, murderous Bond and truly real, vulnerable Bond Girl in Vesper. And oh, did we mention Daniel Freaking Craig?! Yeah, he’s here, making a big, BIG statement about what James Bond will be for the foreseeable future. The second of our two back-to-back expanded nights brings a new announcer, and our regular bass player: the voice introduces himself as “Archibald Cresby”. This may or may not be for real, but Bob Bain on guitar, Ray Sherman on piano, Ralph Collier playing drums, and Jud De Naut (once again getting his name mangled!) on bass are all very much the real deal. After the “Sweet Georgia Brown” intro, the quartet swings through “The Continental”, then Margo chimes in to sing “Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe”. Bob introduces Ray's arrangement of “Star Eyes” (with some great changes behind Bob's brilliant soloing). “Always True To You” is a good vehicle for Margo, and “Tenderly” the perfect showcase for the quartet's sensitivities. Margo returns with a brand new ballad called “My Ginny”. The quartet plays the moody “Miserlou” (with Ralph playing some very cool bongos). Margo brightens the mood with “Walkin' My Baby Back Home”, then the quartet races for home with Bob's great arrangement of the Mozart theme, renamed “Turkish Boogie”, a flag waver and perfect closer for our extended live radio date!

SUMMER SONGS THAT ROCK - One Year Anniversary

Folks, it's amazing to realize that the What The Riff podcast has been around for a year! To celebrate, we're focusing this Memorial Day week on rock-and-roll songs of summer. Our memories of summers past have always been tied to the music of the time, and we suspect that is the same for you as well. Whether cruising with the top down, hanging out with friends, or playing your boom box on the beach or at the pool, the right song will “take you back” and the memories come flooding through. We hope you enjoy this special rabbit hole edition as we look at summer songs that rock! “Summertime, Summertime” by the Jamies We go back a little earlier than typical with this song from 1958. It has a "sacred harp" sound, and its introductory riff has been covered multiple times. “Dancing in the Street” by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas by David Bowie & Mick Jagger by Van Halen Here is a fine example of a song that has been covered multiple times in a number of styles. The consensus of the What The Riff?!? guys is that the Van Halen version is the best. What do you think? Surfin' U.S.A. by the Beach Boys Perhaps the group most identified with summer in the 60's. You can't do a summer rock episode without having The Beach Boys make an appearance. “Wipe Out” by The Surfaris The most famous instrumental surfing song. What a distinctive percussion and guitar riff! “In the Summertime” by Mungo Jerry We make our way into 1970 with this easy-going groovey track. “Summer in the City” by The Lovin' Spoonful What an awesome line: "Hotter than a matchhead." This song drifts back to a psychedelic 1966, and reminds us of the pre-air conditioning days of summer in the South. “School's Out” by Alice Cooper Everyone remembers this anthem playing at the end of school, marking the start of summer. “Rockaway Beach” by The Ramones Here is a punk genre summer song from the 70's. This one hearkens to the surfing songs of the 60's. “Summertime Blues” by Eddie Cochran by The Who by Rush Here's another example of an original with multiple covers, from 1958 to 1976 to 2004. Were you even aware RUSH did this cover? “Margaritaville ” by Jimmy Buffett This 1977 classic is a mandatory summer song, and brings up the drinks of summer. “Summer Nights” by John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John While this tune is not exactly a rock song, it was a huge summer classic from the 70's, and we did not feel right leaving it out! ... but we don’t listen to the whole thing... “Suddenly Last Summer” by The Motels Drifting into the 80's, The Motels lead off a set of summer songs with female leads. There's a wistfulness with this track we’re all digging. “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama Bananarama had a string of hits in the 80's, including this summer song in a minor key. “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina & The Waves And we switch to a 1985 hit that is more upbeat and positive. This was the biggest hit for Katrina and the Waves, almost (but not quite) their "one hit wonder.“ “Holiday Road” by Lindsey Buckingham This 1983 hit was made famous by “National Lampoon's Vacation” movies, and appeared in subsequent movies in the series. To us, it sounds a little bit like Kenny Loggins, maybe. “Mas Tequila” by Sammy Hagar We step outside our normal chronology with this track from 1999. But it just FEELS like summer. “Blister in the Sun” by the Violent Femmes A 1983 track, this one is a more alternative rock summer song with a distinctive guitar riff. “Miserlou” by Dick Dale We finish off this rabbit hole episode with an instrumental from the King of the Surf Guitar, and from the movie "Pulp Fiction."

On Side A, we have the pleasure of heading into the pipeline as we discover the legendary King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale. He pioneered the surf music style and with the "breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique" and showmanship with the guitar is considered a precursor to heavy metal music, influencing guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. The Boston-born guitar icon released "Misirlou" – a Mediterranean folk tune in 1962 and it was a track he claimed to have recorded 95 times in an effort to reduce the oceans of reverb that ultimately defined surf rock. Filler will take us down his pipeline dream as we chat about the original recording of Misirlou which dates as far back as 1927! And as we make our way over to Side B, it becomes quite clear that Filler & I are gonna need a bigger boat…we have some special late night visitors to our porch. Our long time pal, Vignone, stops by to school us on A Tribe Called Quest. Vignone grew up around the block from Filler and me and was no stranger to late nights on the porch and early mornings recovering in the ocean. We have a lot of fun chatting about Tribe - in particular their album People’s Instinctive Travels & the Paths of Rythym. In episode #009 of Flixwatcher podcast guests Dave from Fortitude Magazine and Josh from Footbalistically Arsenal return, this time to discuss the Quentin Tarantino modern masterpiece Pulp Fiction.   Unbelievably there are people in the world that haven't seen Pulp Fiction! Dave hadn't, so it was his choice and we thank him for it. Tarantino's Palme d'Or winning second film made in 1994 famed for its groundbreaking non-linear narrative, the bromance between Samuel L Jackson and dazzling script impressed the first-time watcher Dave and was a more than welcome re-watch for Josh, Helen and Kobi. With so many great moments there was much to discuss, the watch, the $5 milkshake, the star-studded cameos, that soundtrack and what is in that briefcase? No one was more happy to revisit this postmodern 90s classic than Helen who praised Tarantino for his strong female characters and the timeless quality of the film. Scores Despite quibbles on our unique scoring system (recommendability is a word?!), watching it on his 47" TV Dave scored Pulp Fiction highly on its repeat viewing, apparently, you have to keep watching until you die to fully understand it all. Kobi lists it as being in his Top 5 Films (we'll be keeping an eye out for other entries) and we all recommend it. If you haven't seen Pulp Fiction - stop reading this and go watch it, now! Gary Hoey Interview

It's just so right-with-the-universe that Gary Hoey's 20th album, Dust & Bones [Mascot Label Group], is an exuberant fusion of blues and rock. After all, this accomplished and diverse guitarist has explored several styles in his career—hard rock, rock, surf, and prog, to name a few—and he came home to the blues with 2013's Deja Blues. Now, Hoey has forged his deep blues and rock roots into a fiery, organic, and thrilling mix that should delight and astound lovers of the guitar and guitar music. “Looking back from my first album in 1992, it sure seems like I'm musically schizophrenic,” says Hoey. “But I truly believed in every style I played. I still do. I wanted to master everything—or at least try to—and every lick from every style I've absorbed informs everything I do today. And I love that, because all of that diversity helps me come up with riffs, licks, and melodies that are perhaps deeper and more unique than if I had stayed exclusively with one style.” One thing that always stays consistent, however, is Hoey's impassioned command of the guitar. He's one of those guitarists who can attack his instrument with feral intensity, and then play something very soft and almost achingly beautiful. This ability to devise phrasing, technique, and tone in the service of feeling the music has not gone unnoticed. In 1987, the Boston-born guitarist caught the ear of Ozzy Osbourne—no slouch at picking great guitar players—and almost ended up in his band. (The gig ultimately went to Zakk Wylde.) But Ozzy thought enough of Hoey to implore him to move where the action was—Los Angeles. The relocation paid off big time in 1992, when Hoey scored a major-label record deal with Reprise for his band, Heavy Bones. Sadly, the group was dropped in 1993, but Hoey's determination won the day. He convinced the label to let him record a low-budget instrumental-guitar album, Animal Instinct, and his version of Focus' “Hocus Pocus” brought Hoey chart success and a successful solo career. Since then, the gigs and accolades have never stopped. Here are some highlights… • He scored the soundtrack to Endless Summer II (1994). • He recorded “Miserlou '97” with surf-guitar icon Dick Dale in 1997. • He has provided music for several film and television companies, including Walt Disney, New Line Cinema, and ESPN. • He scored the music to the awesome roller-coaster ride California Screaming at Disney's California Adventure. • He produced metal legend Lita Ford's Living Like a Runaway album. • He is a frequent coach and musical director at Rock ‘n' Roll Fantasy Camp. • In 2015, he celebrated the 20th anniversary of his holiday CDs and tours under the Ho! Ho! Hoey banner. (Hallmark musical greeting cards feature two of his Ho! Ho! Hoey songs.) • He recently completed filming an instructional blues-guitar video for TrueFire online guitar lessons. “I love playing guitar, and, these days, it takes a creative and administrative commitment to keep a career evolving and growing,” says Hoey. “I've learned how to make records, how to manage social-networking campaigns, how to put a tour together, how to sell merchandise, and everything about how to survive in the music business as it exists right now. But it's all worth it when I hang out with the audience at my shows and talk about music. The human interaction is critical, and having that relationship with my fans is what keeps me writing music and practicing like a demon. I never want to let those people down.” Gary chats with Slacker about his new CD!

That cool music you hear in the movie Pulp Fiction – that’s surf music, and here’s how it all happened. When most people hear the words “surf music,” they immediately think the Beach Boys, yet there’s so much more to that under-appreciated style. During a span of about five years between the late Fifties and early Sixties, surf music was king – helping literally shape the sound of the electric guitar, a crucial element to all the rock music that followed, while also producing durable songs like “Wipe Out,” “Miserlou,” and “Pipeline,” that have continued to be included in movies and commercials. Author Kent Crowley has written a new book called Surf Beat – Rock n’ Roll’s Forgotten Revolution, which chronicles the rise and fall of this genre, as well as it’s resurgence in the Nineties with the movie Pulp Fiction. Icon Fetch talks to the author about the long process of gathering information for the book, and some of it’s unlikely heroes, including Frank Zappa, Ritchie Valens, and Bobby Fuller.
