It's not uncommon for a song to be written for one artist, only to become widely known after being recorded by another. It's less common for a song to have yet another rebirth decades later. That's just what happened with "Killing Me Softly with His Song." Originally inspired by Lori Lieberman's profound experience at a 1971 Don McLean concert, Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox's song underwent two dramatic reinventions, first by soul titan Roberta Flack in 1973, and then by Lauryn Hill and her band Fugees in 1996. In this episode, Kirk dives into all three versions, looking to better understand how each singer put her own spin on what was already a classically strong song.Written by: Music by Charles Fox, lyrics by Norman Gimbel with uncredited contributions by Lori LiebermanRecorded by: Lori Lieberman (1972), Roberta Flack (1973), Lauryn Hill & Fugees (1996)Albums: Lori Lieberman (1972), Killing Me Softly with His Song (1973), The Score (1996), A Thousand Dreams (1995), Truly (2022)ALSO REFERENCED/DISCUSSED:"She sang ‘Killing Me Softly' before Roberta Flack. Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry LPP, dive into the fascinating world of musician, producer, and DJ—Questlove (Amir Khalib Thompson)—who briefly shared his childhood autism diagnosis in his 2013 memoir. Questlove's special interests in Soul Train and Black music history, and his stim of watching records spin, intertwine to create his unique perspective and career. Questlove has a massive record collection, encyclopedic music knowledge, and amazing ability to instantly identify the beats per minute of songs. His special interests led him to amass a huge collection of Black music memorabilia that will be housed in the National Museum of African American History and Culture after he dies. He sees himself as a “walking Blacksonian” historian preserving Black music history. The Autistic artist's passion for social justice drives his mission to ensure Black music takes its rightful place in history. Angela: So when one collects data, especially when one is a linguistic Autistic like me and Questlove, one wants to write a book about all the data we have collected.Matt: Once you collect the data, you have to share the data. That's the other half.Angela: Must share data. So good. Yes.The podcast hosts analyze how Questlove's Autistic traits like stimming, special interests, attention to detail, pattern recognition, and monotropism all interconnect and contribute to his creative successes. They see his story as representing what can happen when autism is not pathologized but instead allowed to flourish. Questlove embraces and celebrates his Autistic identity and life on the autism spectrum through his passions and work.“‘My mom said it was a blessing because I never gave her trouble. It was the opposite. They knew exactly how to sedate me, which was to sit me in the front of something that held my interest and then just leave.' This is the way. This is how we roll.” –MattJoin Matt and Angela on this week's virtual culture trip as they explore Questlove's Autistic journey, his amazing accomplishments, and the important role that his unique mind plays in the world of Autistic culture.Do you SPIN on music? Hey, hi, and hello!Episode #61 of the Badass Records Podcast was a very special one, in that the one and only Elwyn M. Grimes, Jr. made a return appearance to the show, and he did so under the guise of tackling two of the most important discographies in hip-hop history, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.Twas no small feat, but we got after it and had a good time doing so, especially considering that -- as of March 3, 2023 -- the De La catalog is finally available via streaming services. 'Bout. Damn. Peter and Dre explore the seminal and important hip-hop album in A Tribe Called Quest's debut effort, 'People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm'. In it, Dre recalls how this brings back memories and where the album feels like, and Peter reveals some of the many limitations of his hip-hop awareness (while somehow still managing to get in a relevant reference to Frank Zappa). This week the Vinyl Boyz drop the needle on the 90s classic hip-hop record from A Tribe Called Quest titled Midnight Marauders. Released on November 9, 1993, by Jive Records. John “Q-Tip” Davis a.k.a. Kamaal Fareed, Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed had already earned the adoration of dedicated hip-hop heads and fans of other genres with their previous projects. But with Midnight Marauders, they cemented their legend. Tribe were in a difficult position when working to put together Midnight Marauders: how do you follow up literally one of the best hip-hop albums of all time? Following their debut People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths Of Rhythm (1990), their sophomore LP The Low End Theory (1991) showcased the group's vastly improved production chops and rhyming abilities. With their second album, they created perfect music to chill and vibe out to. It was a masterful artistic achievement. This album we reviewed this week is ranked in the top 5 of all time when discussing the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. Commercially, Midnight Marauders is the A Tribe Called Quest's highest selling album. The album sold over 1,000,000 copies within it's first year, making it a platinum hit. It also peaked #70 on the UK album charts, #8 on the Billboard 200, and took the top spot Top R&B/Hip Hop chart. A lot of the album's success is due to its timeless classic of a single “Award Tour” which peaked at #47 on the Billboard Hot 100. It's influence has spanned decades with the track being referenced by the likes of Wale, Kanye West, Common, Azealia Banks, and Justin Timberlake. Recording sessions for the album occurred at Battery Studios, Platinum Island Studios and Scorcerer Sound in New York City. Its production was mainly handled by Q-Tip, with contributions from Skeff Anselm, Large Professor and the group's DJ, Ali Shaheed Muhammad. A culmination of the group's two previous albums, it features an eclectic, gritty sound based on jazz, funk, soul and R&B samples, in addition to socially conscious, positively-minded, and humorous lyrics. Thanks for listening. Next week we will be reviewing Metallica's Black Album from 1991. Please subscribe and tell your friends about us! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Timothy Welbeck is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Africology and African American Studies at Temple University. A Civil Rights Attorney by training, Timothy is a scholar of law, race, and cultural studies. He earned his J.D. from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law and his B.A. from Morehouse College. Timothy's scholarly work focuses on contemporary issues of racial identity in America, the intersection of racial classifications and the law in the American context, contemporary African and African American cultural transmissions, retentions, expressions and evolutions, hip-hop as a microcosm of the Black experience, etc. Timothy's forthcoming book “No City for Young Men: Hip-Hop and the Narrative of Marginalization,” explores how hip-hop communicates the lived experience of persons who live in urban centers across the nation, particularly Black men living in major cities. Timothy has also written several peer-reviewed journal articles including “Specter of Reform: The late Sen. Arlen Specter's Criminal Justice Reform, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, and its Role in Expanding the Modern Prison Industrial Complex,” explores the impact of the infamous 1994 Crime Bill in providing the infrastructure for mass incarceration within the United States. The research, funded by the Arlen Specter Center fellowship, examines how the federalization of criminal law, pursuant to the Commerce Clause, has led to expansive growth in federal law enforcement, imprisonment, and thus setting the foundation for the modern carceral state. Timothy's article “People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths to Rhythms: Hip-Hop's Continuation of the Enduring Tradition of African and African-American Rhetorical Forms and Tropes,” examines hip-hop's continuation of centuries-old African cultural norms and aesthetic values. It also adopted an Africological approach to provide a foundation for establishing hip-hop's African origins and its manifestation of African cultural transmissions. Timothy's work has appeared in various media outlets, such as the BBC Radio 4, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, NPR, The Huffington Post, The North Star, REVOLT TV, et al. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is the debut studio album by American hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, released on April 10, 1990[1] on Jive Records. After forming the Native Tongues collective and collaborating on several projects, A Tribe Called Quest began recording sessions for People's Instinctive Travels in late 1989 at Calliope Studios with completion reached in early 1990. The album's laid back production encompassed a diverse range of samples which functioned as a template for the group's unorthodox lyrics.
This week, we take it back to 91 with a debut album made by one of the most influential Hip Hop groups OF ALL TIME. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is an essential album that introduced the vibrant sounds of A Tribe Called Quest. Armed with a plethora of obscure jazz samples and ambitious beat-breaks, the collective created a new sound that would skyrocket its members into music stardom while creating another sub-genre of rap music in the term "conscious rap." Those terms may be eschewed now due to artists bending genres with new ideas through production and vocals, but the late 80s/ early 90s were still dominated by more hardcore acts like NWA, and record labels still had major control over artists' image. With DMV-bred/ATL-based artist Jenna Camille (@JennaCamilleSMG) as this week's guest, the trio chooses their top three tracks, discusses Phife Dawg's importance in Tribe, and debates about how A Tribe Called Quest is one of the most influential groups in Music. Vance also talks about the time he went to Prince's house for a party 7 months before his passing. As we're doing a round of rap album picks at The Sonic Collective, I gave People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm one listen and decided to make it our album for May 2020. Released on April 10, 1990, it was the group's debut album. From Queens, New York, A Tribe Called Quest formed a friendship with hip-hop act Jungle Brothers, both groups formed a collective called Native Tongues, which also included De La Soul. They played with beats, technology and built their skills in the rap world. Listen along to our review and join us at thesoniccollective.com for show notes and access to more music reviews and stories. Also available on your favourite podcast platforms.

There have been many musicians that have passed on recently, but the passing of Malik “Phife” Taylor hit me hardest because ATCQ was an integral part of me grasping and appreciating creativity and individuality while in High School where standing out can be social suicide. I never went full Bohemian however, but took some sartorial chances and came out unscathed. Of course, Tribe were more than their clothes; They provided a sound that influenced countless spirits, crafted a soundtrack for your Instinctive Travels and showed fans everywhere that brotherhood is not pretty but it is strong. Phife and Tip were more than brothers, they existed as the primordial Yin & Yang, polarizing parts of a ubiquitous whole that captured the hearts of many. Peace to Phife and his indomitable spirit. On Side A, we have the pleasure of heading into the pipeline as we discover the legendary King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale. He pioneered the surf music style and with the "breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique" and showmanship with the guitar is considered a precursor to heavy metal music, influencing guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. The Boston-born guitar icon released "Misirlou" – a Mediterranean folk tune in 1962 and it was a track he claimed to have recorded 95 times in an effort to reduce the oceans of reverb that ultimately defined surf rock. Filler will take us down his pipeline dream as we chat about the original recording of Misirlou which dates as far back as 1927! And as we make our way over to Side B, it becomes quite clear that Filler & I are gonna need a bigger boat…we have some special late night visitors to our porch. Our long time pal, Vignone, stops by to school us on A Tribe Called Quest. Vignone grew up around the block from Filler and me and was no stranger to late nights on the porch and early mornings recovering in the ocean. We have a lot of fun chatting about Tribe - in particular their album People’s Instinctive Travels & the Paths of Rythym. Special thanks to Kitty, Jackie, Ryan, & Bassman for keeping us company on the porch for this episode. Support the show (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cover-story/id1316021270)
This week’s show is a memoriam to one of the dopest MC’s of all time – Phife Dawg or A Tribe Called Quest fame. Phife’s amenable style and unrelenting metaphors told a story from one of the art form’s most unique points of view. The 5-foot freak, told it like it was and made you understand that Hip Hop is a culture and rhyming is an artform, not only a bi-product of packing a gat or running a criminal enterprise. A part of the transformative Native Tongue crew - A Tribe Called Quest, Phife succumbed to complications tied to diabetes and passed away at 45-years-old. We play the whole discography from People’s Instinctive Travels to the Love Movement and stop to note Phife’s greatness along the way. So microphone check – 1,2 – who is this? This is all about Malik and how he changed Hip Hop on his own terms. He was on point. All the time – It’s Boom Bap Radio.
