This week, MJ is bringing back one of her favourite conversations with the upcoming Academy awards in LA anf the annual Elton John Academy Awards viewing party raising money for AIDS (as funding is being slashed everywhere by the current administration). This conversation also brings hope and collective care during a truly divisive time. David Furnish and MJ met over 40 years ago as teenagers, relegated to the back court of their local tennis club because they just weren't cool enough for prime time. Connecting as the ultimate outsiders, they went on to change the club's culture, embracing their trailblazing spirit and finding the confidence and conviction that only a soul connecting friendship provides. Fully embracing their 14-year old selves, listen as they talk about loving the rebel within, David's entrepreneurial skills from launching the pool snack bar to a much larger business, Rocket Entertainment. Let's not forget the game changing work he has been doing for over 30 years with the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the global charity he runs so passionately with his much adored husband, Elton John. In this episode, host Dr. Christina Madison interviews Aleata Postell, group director of pharmacy business development, Walmart, to discuss the significance of specialty pharmacy services—particularly related to HIV care—in public health. Postell highlights how Walmart has initiatives that support HIV care and testing. Key Takeaways: Community Pharmacy's Role in Public Health: The episode highlights the critical role community pharmacies—such as Walmart—play in public health, particularly in providing accessible specialty care and HIV services. Importance of Reducing Stigma and Enhancing Education: Aleata Postell shares her personal motivation and experiences, emphasizing the need to reduce stigma around HIV and other specialty conditions. Education and awareness, both within the community and among health care providers, are crucial for improving care and ensuring patients feel comfortable seeking treatment and support. We meet artist Jordan Eagles to mark World Aids Day 2023. For 25 years, Eagles (b. 1977) has been exploring the aesthetics and ethics of blood as an artistic medium since the late 1990s. He lives and works in New York City and we were lucky to visit his studio in Brooklyn and were lucky enough to have our portraits taken by Jordan, within one of his projections.Exploring the visual power, and cultural uses of blood, are the central tenets of Eagle's practice, which includes painting, sculpture, installation, photography and public programming. Created with animal blood from slaughterhouses, the work address themes of corporeality, spirituality, and regeneration. The preservation technique permanently retains the organic material's natural colors, patterns, and textures. When lit, the works become translucent and luminous, reflecting the many layers suspended throughout the resin, revealing the blood's visceral properties and energy. More politically motivated series, rendered from donated human blood—procured from the LGBTQI+ community—are utilized to advocate for fair blood donation policies, anti-stigma, and equality. We discuss his major museum solo show ONE BLOOD currently on display at Springfield Art Museum, Missouri until February 18, 2024. Blood is frequently associated with violence and death, yet it is a critical life-force universal to all humanity. In an era of mass shootings, war, disease, and the urgent struggle over body autonomy and LGBTQI+ rights, blood is a symbolic connective tissue – often sensationalized – its visceral power is undeniable. Over the past decade, Eagles has built an expansive body of work focused on challenging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) blood donation policy, which advocates suggest is biased, perpetuates stigma and homophobia, and is not in line with modern science. Eagles' sculptures, panels, screen-prints, photographic and video works are collaborations created with blood donated by members of the LGBTQI+ community, specifically for the purpose of making artworks and advocating for science and equality. Eagles utilizes a broad range of techniques in his work and his preservation process retains the natural patterns, colors, and textures of the organic material. Most of the blood in this exhibition is preserved, including sculptures and panels made with medical waste and archival material. The title of his solo exhibition, ONE BLOOD, references that despite the different backgrounds and serotypes of the blood donors, they are all united for blood equality. The exhibition features the work Blood Mirror, a large resin sculpture made with 59 individual human blood donations, that could have been used for life saving purposes if the FDA's policy was more fair. For the first time, key works from several of the artist's series that connect queer blood with American pop culture, comic books, military propaganda, and religious iconography are on view together. The exhibition also includes new works from Eagles' latest series utilizing Artificial Intelligence.Follow @JordanEagles and visit: https://jordaneagles.com/exhibitionsLearn about the Elton John AIDS Foundation's work. The reviews are in and Alan Scott: Green Lantern is scoring high marks across comics reviewers, for context, how long has this first issue been in the works? What made using Hoover so important for your story?10 minutesI found the first issue incredibly impactful, from the care and love Alan and his boyfriend show each other to the cruel world he must navigate, how do you balance writing a story about a gay man in the 40s with superhero heroics?Cian, last we spoke you talkeJonas Scharfd about loving to draw boats and lo and behold, you're drawing plenty in this first issue! What has been the most rewarding thing about drawing this series so far?Your story is taking place in the 40s DC universe, how much room do you have to play, considering a single choice could affect the universe going forward?Red Lanterns are relatively new in the grand scheme of things and yet…might your story be rewriting the appearance of Red Lanterns? Is there pressure in delivering on that front? Will you continue to plumb moments in Alan's life in each issue, or will the narrative be more linear going forward? The legacy of Green Lantern is growing thanks to you guys, do you have a favorite Green Lantern story arc?Alan Scott - have you changed your opinion of the character? The anti-gay backlash has been disgusting and I understand you're giving your royalties to the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Tim.

Abby Borden (Founder, Table Set Go) is a Freelance Event Producer specializing in food & beverage. Her client list has included the Grammys, Elton John AIDS Foundation, Warner Brothers, Amazon Studios, the Dodgers and the James Beard Foundation and she has been the Producer for Regarding Her Food's 10-day Festival, since its inception in 2021. Her goal for every event is that guests are well fed, thoroughly entertained, and still talking about it when they leave. The daughter of a diplomat, she was fortunate enough to be exposed to different cultures, cuisines, art and design early on. She especially loves being able to pluck from her travels when curating a menu or designing a space. Abby is based in Los Angeles and shares a home with her partner Jon, their cats Penelope, Bean, and dog Roscoe - who loves food as much as his Mommy does. You can find her @tableset_go on Instagram. Here are the golden nuggets from the conversation about becoming a successful freelancer and maintaining valuable relationships: Value Relationships: Building and maintaining relationships is crucial for success, whether you're a freelancer or in a traditional job. Never burn bridges, and always represent yourself positively because you never know who your next boss or client might be. Networking Pays Off: Networking can lead to unexpected opportunities. The story of how the James Beard Foundation became a client through a chance connection emphasizes the importance of networking and staying open to possibilities. Take Bold Actions: Don't hesitate to take bold actions in your career, even if they seem daunting. Sometimes, making that uncomfortable phone call or sending that email can lead to significant opportunities. Maintain Relationships: Continuously nurture your professional relationships. You never know when you or someone you know might need assistance or collaboration in the future. Specialize: Rather than trying to do everything, focus on your specific strengths and specialties. This helps you stand out in your field and attract clients who value your expertise. Clarity in Specialization: Clearly define your specialization to prospective clients. For example, instead of saying you're a general event planner, specify that you're an event producer specializing in food and beverage. This clarity helps attract the right clients. Passion and Focus: Pursue work that you're passionate about and aligns with your expertise. When you love what you do, it's easier to excel and find satisfaction in your work. Accessibility: Don't hesitate to reach out to people you admire or want to learn from. Direct messages (DMs) and emails can be effective ways to connect with potential mentors or collaborators. Be Complimentary: When reaching out to someone for advice or collaboration, it's a compliment that you found them. Express your admiration and interest in their work. Stay Available: Be open and available for potential clients or collaborators who want to get in touch with you. Responsiveness and accessibility can lead to new opportunities. In this episode, we explore her groundbreaking work as the founder of The Parkinson's Appeal for DBS and discuss her memorable journey to a film festival hosted by Imelda Marcos in Manila. Plants to the Rescue #PlantsatWorkWeek2023 An ambulance makes an appearance at the Oxford Business Park. Everyone is keen to know who's in need of medical help without appearing too nosey. Watching from afar one person noted something wasn't quite right – plants kept appearing, peeping out of the back of the ambulance and round the corners of the doors. Where was the patient? And what had happened? Searching for the bed and the patient in the ambulance was difficult as the back was full of plants not patients! Proving that visible signage #plantstotherescue is very apt. NPWW Ambulance LR An ambulance brings #plantstotherescue for National Plants at Work Week 2023 This is how National Plants at Work Week opened in 2023. The brainchild of plants@work ambassador Ian Drummond confirmed, “The ambulance felt like the perfect tool to confirm the importance of plants to our health and wellbeing. Ian at the ambulance lr Ian Drummond of Ian Drummond Botancia Designs who dressed the Ambulance “Research over many years has shown that plants improve our moods and reduce stress levels and generally help our work flow. They can stimulate and improve our performance and concentration plus they lessen noise around us by deflecting and diffracting sound.” Shirley Smith of Botanica Nurseries who has several clients in the business park and looks after their plant installations with the same care as doctors and their patients, commented, “Plants make us more productive and help our creativity as well as reduce our stress levels.” James and Shirley 2 LR James and Shirley Smith of Botanica Nurseries who supplied the plants and helped dress the ambulance Ian added, “The ambulance is a great symbol to show how we should respect the work that plants do for us in the same way as we respect the National Health Service including ambulance crews.” Inside the ambulance LR From 10 – 14 July we will be celebrating the positive benefits of having plants in the workplace. This week I go on a sartorial journey with Canadian film maker David Furnish. David is CEO of Rocket Entertainment Group and Chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation which has raised a staggering $600 million to dateto support programs in 55 countries around the globe through prevention and education, elimination of prejudice and discrimination, and providing services to people living with the disease. Of course we talk about shopping …and how he and Elton sometimes use the process as a reward for hard work, not to mention the benefit of how beautiful things are mood altering and make you feel good about yourself. We chat about how cathartic it is to have a good clear-out in the spirit of both circularity and fund raising for a great cause…in the process giving someone else the opportunity to enjoy those pieces – bravo to that – I have been doing the same myself and it is so rewarding to see something gorgeous head off to a new home to make new memories and be valued all over again. David is wonderfully generous about sharing insights into the glamorous life he shares with his husband Elton… His “Pretty Woman” moment in Paris…dressing up for legendary parties from Elton's 50th to White Tie and Tiaras and so much more… He clearly loves fashion and appreciates the passion and creativity that his designer friends put into their work … he is undoubtedly a super stylish man.

After Queen singer Freddie Mercury's death in the fall of 1991, musicians confronted the AIDS crisis head-on. The band's remaining members and a star-studded lineup celebrated the frontman's legacy at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in spring 1992. Hip-hop trio Salt-N-Pepa reworked their single “Let's Talk About Sex” into “Let's Talk About AIDS” for an ABC special. R&B newcomers TLC appeared on talk shows with condoms emblazoned on their flashy attire. Meanwhile, the compilation album Red Hot + Dance—featuring three exclusive tracks from George Michael—set out to raise awareness about safe sex and LGBTQ rights and raise funds for AIDS charities. Also in 1992: U2 released their anthemic ballad “One,“ partly inspired by HIV-positive artist and activist David Wojnarowicz; Madonna called for frank discussions about queerness and desire with her controversial photo book Sex and groundbreaking album Erotica; and Elton John launched the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which would become one of the largest HIV-related funders in the world. But as a 1992 New York Times article declared, tackling AIDS was a “creative and ethical minefield” for pop stars. In this episode, we look at the various ways they navigated it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On 1st December each year, many people across the globe will stop and remember the millions who have died from an AIDS-related illness. As well as this, World AIDS Day is also a chance for people to support those who are still living with HIV and to raise awareness that much more still needs to be done to fight this illness. There are currently around 38 million people across the world who have HIV, with more than 100,000 of those in the UK. Since the virus was first identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or an AIDS-related illness, making it one of the most fatal pandemics in human history. On top of this, people with HIV have had to contend with the stigma of having the virus. This stigma has often arisen because of society's lack of information on the illness or moral judgements on how someone may have contracted it. HIV is generally transmitted through sex and can also be linked to activities like injecting drugs. This stigma has often denied so many people a right to talk about their condition and has meant many have died with a sense of shame. However, an organisation in the UK called the National HIV Story Trust is working to give all those who have the virus and those who died from it a voice to share their experience. Chris Sandford from the National HIV Story Trust, spent over four decades campaigning for more support for those living with HIV and he is the guest for this ITV Pridecast. Liam McConkey recorded this interview with Chris in mid-November 2022, for World AIDS Day on 1st December. Since that recording however, Chris has very sadly passed away. He did not die of HIV but his family and colleagues still wanted this episode to be broadcast on World AIDS Day, as a tribute to the work he did championing the rights of people with HIV across the world.During the episode Chris discusses what it was like to find out he had contracted HIV and what the stigma was like during the 1980s and 1990s. He also very movingly recalls supporting his partner who also had HIV at the time and shares the fears of a period when there wasn't any effective treatment available. Whilst working at the National HIV Story Trust, Chris was the Director of Education and would often go into schools, colleges and universities to create greater awareness and understanding of HIV. By sharing his story so openly, Chris made a huge difference in challenging the stigma around HIV and has undoubtedly improved the lives of so many who still live with the virus. Trigger warning: transphobia, harassment in medical settings, racism Zami Hyemingway and Dr. Tatyana Moaton sit down with Tammy to discuss their personal and professional experiences with medical care for transgender folks and medical mistreatment. Together, they reflect on the need for medical providers to become responsive to transgender people's individual needs and advocate for them in a setting that has often been unsafe for them. Transgender folks need medical providers who will take risks and be true allies. Healthcare providers must rethink care amidst a system in which they occupy positions of power. Our guests also argue for de-coupling all healthcare from any sort of police or criminal systems, emphasizing the impact this has on people with marginalized identities. Their discussion dives into the colonial roots of the gender binary and the transgender identity category, and how these constructs lead to a misunderstanding of what it means to be transgender and navigate trans healthcare. Last March both guests participated in the conference “See All of Me: The Intersections of Medical Mis/Distrust and its Impact on Transgender Health, HIV Care and Prevention.” Zami Hyemingway co-organized it and Dr. Tatyana Moaton was a plenary speaker. Prince Harry reconnected with his Welsh friend Gareth Thomas to support 2022 National HIV Testing Week in England. National HIV Testing Week is the campaign to promote regular testing, particularly among the most affected population groups in England, thereby helping to reduce the number of people living with undiagnosed HIV. For listeners living outside of the UK or for those who don't follow the sport of Rugby Union, Gareth Thomas is a former rugby player and was also the captain of the Welsh Rugby Union team, at one point being the most capped player in the sport. He came out in 2009 and in 2019 it was publicized that he was diagnosed with HIV/ AIDS. This week is not the first time that Prince Harry has spoken about the importance of HIV testing. In the past few years Harry had made raising awareness about and de-stigmatizing HIV one of his causes. He and Rhianna both took a much-publicized HIV test in 2016 which resulted in a 500% increase in people getting tested. In November 2019, not long after news of Gareth's diagnosis was made public, Harry and a whole bunch of press and TV cameras met with Gareth and with rugby players from the English rugby club the Harlequins, to launch 2019's HIV testing week. This past December on World AIDS Day 2021, Harry wrote to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and to the Executive Director of UNAIDS, thanking the scientific community for their tireless work in the treatment of AIDS.To kick of HIV testing week this year, Harry participated in a podcast hosted by Gareth. In 2020 Gareth set up a website called Tackle HIV https://tacklehiv.org/which provides lots of information in written and video formats aiming to correct misunderstandings, change attitudes and break stigma around HIV with the aim to make a difference for people living with and people affected by the virus. Gareth's Tackle HIV organization is supported by groups such as the Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK National AIDS Trust and by the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The 30-minute podcast was in the format of a very relaxed conversation between Harry and Gareth. They have met each other many times before and you can tell that they are relaxed in each other's company, with Harry at one point teasing Gareth over his Welsh accent. This podcast talks about some of the issues that Harry and Gareth chatted about, including the ground-breaking work by the late Princess Diana in breaking down walls surrounding a diagnosis of AIDS.For listeners from the US and Canada, a quick browse on the internet shows that the availability of free HIV testing varies from state to state and from province to province, but there is generally some free access to testing services. Information about these services can be found on the relevant state and provincial health department websites. Please keep listening for future podcasts on all things Meghan, Harry, Archie and Lili. ‘my brother and his friends' battle with HIV motivated me to want to help' – Anne Aslett joins Purposely Podcast to share her story Anne Aslett is the Chief Executive Officer of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF). She has been with the Foundation for almost 20 years having joined from the commercial sector. Initially Anne joined as a volunteer and she is now their Global CEO and responsible for disbursing over $60 million in grants. Anne talks about her brothers fight with HIV and misdiagnosed brain tumour that would eventually take his young life. How his experience along with that of his close friends led her to want to help others going through the same thing. She initially joined HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust (UK) as a volunteer moving on to help Elton John set up a supporter database for his own AIDS Foundation. You will hear how a bold suggestion to Elton and his manager, interrupting a conversation they were having in the office, led to a popup shop selling Elton's used clothing and raised significant funds to help their early work. Anne shares the story of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and their mission to end discrimination, HIV infections and AIDS deaths. No matter who or where you are in the world. More specifically Anne talks about the incredible success they have had with a project in South London whereby they switched to automatic HIV testing rather than the traditional opt in test. Anne also talks about working what it is like to work Elton John as well Elton's husband David Furnish who is the Chairman of the Foundation. How she travelled with the charity's celebrity Patron Victoria Beckham to a project affecting girls at risk of HIV and she was up close and personal when President Macron awarded Elton with the Legion d'Honneur and they jointly launched their most successful partnership. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

Today I am joined by the fabulous David Furnish for an extra special episode to mark World Aid's Day. David is a tireless campaigner and a leading voice in the worldwide fight against HIV and AIDS. David serves as the chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), a non-profit organisation established by the musician in 1992 to help fund frontline partners to prevent infections, fight stigma and provide treatment to the most vulnerable groups affected by HIV around the world. This year marks the 27th anniversary of the Foundation and while 2020 has certainly faced extra challenges, the foundation has worked hard to maintain momentum and support. In this episode, we discuss lockdown life, the importance of human connection, how the Foundation has continued to raise awareness around AIDS during a pandemic and David makes it very clear that they will not stop until they have achieved their goal. Russell and Robert chat to music legend & flamboyant superstar Sir Elton John CBE from lockdown at his home in Los Angeles. We discuss art collecting, a lifelong obsession that began by collecting dinky toys and vinyl records during childhood, buying Man Ray posters at Athena when he first started songwriting with Bernie Taupin, why he started his photography collection in the early 1990s, what it was like to be photographed by Irving Penn, why he just missed out on getting his portrait taken by Robert Mapplethorpe, his friendships with contemporary artists such as Nathaniel Mary Quinn and Catherine Opie, his admiration for David Hockney, and why he & John Lennon once refused to answer the door to Andy Warhol!!! We discuss his love of glass, a preference for all-things analogue, his love of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, staging the groundbreaking exhibition 'The Radical Eye' at Tate Modern (that included photographs from the 1920s to the 1950s) and his hopes to stage further exhibitions at the V&A (where a gallery was recently named after Elton and husband David Furnish). We also discover his lockdown passion for jigsaw puzzles, playing Snakes & Ladders with his kids, and joyful binge-watching TV shows such as Fleabag and Pose!Follow @EltonJohn on Instagram, Elton's website is: https://www.eltonjohn.comPlease visit @EJAF for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and website: http://ejaf.orgFor all images discussed in today’s episode visit @TalkArt and we are also on Twitter @TalkArtPodcast. Boby has lost track of the precise number of times she has been gang-raped. She thinks it is between eight and 10. “Every time it has been without condom,” she says. “Every time I was badly beaten.” As a trans sex worker in India's capital city Delhi, the smiling, unabashed 25-year-old lives under a constant threat of HIV infection which she can only do so much to control. She speaks to The Independent at the Samarth clinic, an outwardly unassuming centre on the outskirts of the capital run by the India HIV/AIDS Alliance and supported by the Elton John AIDS Foundation. http://patreon.com/winecellarmediafund http://paypal.me/PhoenixAndWilliam
She last performed in November 2017 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in New York and her final "miraculous" public concert was in Philadelphia in August 2017. Franklin - and her distinctive, powerful voice - rose to fame in the 1960s after starting out as a gospel singer, going on to achieve massive global success with memorable soul hits. She sold more than 75 million records worldwide and accumulated 18 Grammy awards, including one for Lifetime Achievement. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In a statement, former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama said every time Franklin sang "we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. "Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience," the Obamas said. "In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade - our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance."
The Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin is reported to be in a Detroit Michigan Hospital under hospice care surrounded by close friends and family as she struggles to remain alive. This caused me to reminisce on her stellar career as the greatest Soul Singer of all time with a signature voice that could rouse emotions from anyone no matter how cold their heart may be. The 76 year old icon has appeared frail in her recent performances last year all the while keeping her health concerns private. Her last performance was at an Elton John AIDS Foundation private gala last November of 2017. While many are saddened by this news, I encourage everyone to send positive energy to her in the form of your thoughts, memories and prayers as we should all do for her family and friends as I know that they have they weight of the world on their shoulders at this time. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lancescurv/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lancescurv/support
