How will the ESG agenda impact sport?ESG is short for Environmental, Social and Governance, and is a set of standards measuring business's impact on society, the environment, and how transparent and accountable it is; an attempt to capture all the non-financial risks and opportunities inherent in a company's day to day activities. It relates to sport in a number of very significant ways. For example, some major corporations are using ESG as a framework with which to shape their sport sponsorship spend. Is the sports team or event rights holder transparent in its governance and supply chain practices? Is its workforce and executive suitably diverse? And what is the impact of its events on the climate? But the ESG movement has also proven controversial. Elon Musk called it 'the devil' and dismissed it as 'woke', after tobacco companies scored higher in sustainability indexes than Tesla: 'How could cigarettes, which kill over eight million a year, be deemed a more ethical investment than electric cars?' wrote Musk, accusing ESG of creating unintended consequences and creating a misleading rule book that's open to being gamed by unscrupulous business owners. To help us unpick where sport plays in the ESG debate, we're joined by Nick Keller, the CEO and founder of Benchmark, and the global foundation Beyond Sport, which has been backed by global leaders including Richard Branson, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair.00:00 Introduction and Benchmark Overview02:50 The Role of Agencies in Sports06:55 The Importance of ESG in Sports15:51 The Challenges of ESG Investing22:53 The Future of Sponsorship in Sports32:18 Understanding the Supply Chain in Sports33:09 The Role of Sustainability 33:26 The Impact of AI on Sports33:37 The Ethics of Sports Sponsorship34:13 The Role of Brands in Sports39:14 The Power of Athlete Activism39:59 The Future of Sports Sponsorship44:12 The Challenges of Major Sports Events51:56 The Role of Sustainability in Major Sports Events57:51 The Impact of Cancer on Personal LifeUnofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. This is The Do It For Yourself Podcast. Each week I sit down with someone who is doing it for themselves and chasing a dream they just couldn’t suppress. This is often speakers, entrepreneurs, or athletes. They all share one thing in common, they are overcoming challenges and never giving up. Someone who is Doing It For Themselves is not selfish in their pursuit, they are simply chasing a dream or working towards a goal because it is something THEY want to do. They are not forging down a path because society or someone is telling them it’s what they should be doing. This week I have the chance to sit down with Nick Keller. Nick is from Texas, where football is everything and it was just that for him. From a young age, everything that Nick did had to do with football. He ate, slept, and breathed football day in and day out. Nick discovered from a young age also that if you put in the work, you can get the results that you want. One particular instance of this was when Nick wanted to be the quarterback for his team but he was not selected. He began working every day to achieve this dream, hitting the weights, throwing, and constantly working to become that quarterback. As you can imagine, not playing football was not an option for Nick, that is until it was his only option. Nick had taken some hits, some pretty hard ones at that. He had multiple concussions and after speaking with doctors and his parents, Nick made the extremely difficult decision to walk away from football. This was a very hard decision for Nick but one that he knew he needed to make. In an effort to stay connected to the game, Nick began training younger athletes to help them reach their goals. Nick was no longer able to play but this helped him stay in the game in some way and also provided him with a little extra money. When you are Doing It For Yourself though, it isn't about the money and Nick has said that time and time again. Nick could very easily take this opportunity and transform it into a very successful business, but he has decided to keep it as a side hustle and pursue his degree in engineering. Nick has the opportunity to taste different things and try different jobs to see what he likes right now. He is Doing It For Himself by staying connected to the game of football but exploring other options as well. This was a great conversation and I am looking forward to sharing it with you. On this episode of #ThePlaybook, Nick Keller, Founder and CEO of Benchmark, sits down to share his thoughts on:[5:37] Why sports bring together all aspects of society and creates opportunities to solve local and global issues[14:19] How sports can help promote better mental health for anyone who is willing to be vulnerable[20:00] Why he loves hiring people that are autonomous and restless[22:55] How to take advantage of consumers’ changing preferences for businesses that are ethical
Richard and Sean are in a very cold and sunny Paris for the first Global Sports Week, hosting our first Unofficial Partner Live podcast recording. Our panel included Tracey Russell, COO of McCourt, the family investment company that owns Olympique Marseille and was an early investor in Dugout; Andreas Zakglis the Secretary General of FIBA, the international basketball federation and Richard Brisius, the Race Director of The Ocean Race and formerly head of the Sweden Winter Olympic bid for 2026. This podcast has some snippets from the on-stage conversation followed by a more in-depth piece with Tracey on what sport looks like from an investor’s point of view. With social impact a big theme of GSW we got together two people who have put brand purpose at the heart of their businesses. Neill Duffy founder of 17 Sport and Nick Keller or Beyond Sport.
Nick Keller is a Senior Concept Artist at Weta Digital (formerly Weta Workshop) and an Illustrator. Many of you may know Weta which was founded by Peter Jackson and have worked on some of the biggest movies our time including Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia, Avatar, Avengers and many more. You would think that this would be why I was compelled to have a chat with Nick considering he works for one of the more exciting businesses in the world. The real reason however is Nick's own profile as an illustrator and artist, painting and designing album artwork for metal bands in New Zealand and Australia as well as all over the world. If you're a fan of bands such as In Malice's Wake, Disentomb, Dawn of Azazel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Beastwars and Bulletbelt then you will already be well acquainted with his fantastical and surreal imagery which (in my opinion) is quite Beksiński inspired. It's difficult to put into words how incredible Nick's art is. The level of detail and skill that would be required to create artwork of this nature would feel almost beyond reach to most people. At least for me anyway! One of the cool things in this chat with Nick is his humble approach to what he does but also what he believes has helped him over the years to achieve what has to date. We talk a lot about talent and skill, with most cases comes from environment and continuous practice rather than an inherited or genetic trait. We also touch on some of Nick's earlier memories of getting into art, how he landed the job at Weta and the challenges he can face at times working as a concept artist versus his own personal work. His work for bands and other personal peaces helps balance out the often intense and selfless work as a concept artist where some of his creations may not come to light due to preferences of the client. If you're an artist of any type, you will love this chat and get a lot from it. Nick's work is jaw dropping but it's his approach and story which certainly fuels my inspiration to progress past stick figure drawings! If you work in the sports business, you’ve probably heard of Nick Keller. He's the driving force behind Benchmark, the BT Sport Industry Awards, Beyond Sport and several other prominent sports biz ventures. But you won't have heard him talk in such an honest and candid way as he does in the latest Unofficial Partner podcast. It's an hour's conversation about life and career, from being one of the first player agents in rugby's professional era through to what the judging process of the Sport Industry Awards has taught him about how the sports business works and how it's changed over the last few decades. And then, we talked about cancer. Subscribe to the podcast and read Nick’s searingly honest account of his recent cancer diagnosis. Shaun Farrugia is the front man for Melbourne's thrash metal band, In Malice's Wake. The band has been a fixture of Melbourne's metal scene since the early 2000's and who are highly respected by many of the Australian metal faithful. Like a lot of Australian bands, Shaun and the guys are total DIY and take great pride in putting in the hard yards to release music and tour. Over the years they have churned out several full length albums, an EP and live album with quite a bit of the artwork being created by Shaun himself. In addition to me living in a cave and not knowing that Shaun did a lot of the band's artwork, I also didn't release that he was a primary school arts teacher and had previously worked as an air brusher. Clearly his talents extend outside of music alone and as a frustrated artist myself (which basically means I like the idea of doing art but don't actually do it), I was keen to learn more about what he has been doing outside of the band and his interest in art and oil painting in particular, which is what he will be doing for the new album "The Blindness of Faith". When we caught up, the guys were about to kick off the recording sessions and Shaun was already in sketch mode, putting together multiple drafts of the cover art before creating the final piece. Their last album, "Light Upon the Wicked", utilised the talents of Nick Keller for the artwork so with such a high bar raised, Shaun is feeling the pressure but is up for the challenge of creating something that meets or exceeds (in it's own right) what the band has put out previously. Getting a bit of an inside view into Shaun's journey to date with the writing of the album (which may or may not include writing thrash metal riffs in a store room at the school he teaches at) and the challenge of creating the artwork himself again certainly adds an extra element of depth and appreciation to what will soon be a brand new In Malice's Wake release. Can't wait. Narratives are what make people and their endeavours so incredibly interesting and relatable. Shaun is another guy who I have had the pleasure of knowing for quite a few years including sharing the stage on a number of occasions, however only now discovering more about who he is. This week, for the first time, I’ve got three guests on the show. I spoke with Nick Keller, Conor Nolan, and Kelly Fitzpatrick, the writer, artist, and colorist (respectively) of Bedtime Games. This is an awesome new horror series from Dark Horse Comics set to debut on Wednesday, June 27th. It has a definite Stephen King vibe to it too as the comic follows three kids who head into a tunnel looking for mischief and end up uncovering a horrifying monster. Nick can be found at his official website, NickFKeller.com and on Twitter @NickFKeller. Conor can be found at his official website, ConorNolan.com and on Twitter @conor_draws. Kelly can be found on Twitter @wastedwings. You can follow Kelly’s dog on Instagram at @bostonboyarchie and Conor’s dog at @mayorofpuppytown.
