When Sadie Lincoln and her husband, Chris, decided to start fitness company barre3, it was borne from a sense in which popular fitness models weren’t working for her, despite doing all the things and having all the stuff. Now with more than 175 locations in three countries, she is seeking to redefine fitness by helping people be “balanced in their body” and “empowered from within.”This is a podcast about change, so I sat down with Sadie to learn about how she thinks about it… it’s one of the core ideas she’s espoused in her business from Day 1.You can hear more about Sadie’s very unconventional early life and upbringing in podcasts like How I Built This and The Rich Roll Podcast, and I encourage you to do that. More and more young people are taking decisive action on the injustices we see around us, eschewing traditional structures like school council committees for more direct action. From climate strikes to decolonising the curriculum, students are demanding wholescale education transformation, building a case for tangible, meaningful, and shared activism; not just as individuals with a large social media following; not just tinkering around the edges; not just as a trend. Poor mestizos in northern Peru offer a new way to theorize humanism and sentient landscapes that interact with humans in terms of environmental justice, collective ethics, and health. By defining “community” and “well-being” as humans-in-relationship-to-places-as-persons, poor mestizos resignify “nature” itself as an anchor for social justice. Ana Mariella Bacigalupo, Professor of Anthropology at the State University of New York-Buffalo, speaks on her research in northern Peru. She has worked with Mapuche shamans in Southern Chile and shamans on the north coast of Peru. Ben Rubin and Dan Harris have found themselves as unlikely cofounders in 10% Happier, which came together when Ben’s company, Change Collective, underwent a successful pivot into a new focus, a new name, and a new co-founder. At the time, Ben stared down his biggest fears of failure - that of creating another “smoking black hole” - only to shift the company, raise money and relaunch the product all in a short two month span, pulling off what their investor Matt Harris called “a triple lindy.” Almost two years later, 10% Happier is among the top mindfulness and guided meditation apps. In this episode, Ben and Dan open up to Jerry about what it’s like being cofounders. They shed light on how their mutual anxieties affect their relationship and their company. Ben Rubin started his first company, Zeo, while attending Brown University, to help people learn how to measure and manage their sleep. Following Zeo, Ben co-founded the Change Collective, focusing on helping people drive change through courses and coaches. After partnering with Dan Harris, Ben and his co-founders decided to focus solely on meditation and changed the name to 10% Happier, the name of Dan Harris’s book. Ben’s initial focus on improving sleep helped him realize how small changes in his lifestyle could positively impact the rest of his day in such a dramatic way and wanted to continue to explore self-improvement and development. In this episode, Ben talks about: The benefits of meditation and how they help people get over what he calls the ‘woo woo’ aspect Why those involved with startups can particularly benefit from meditation The three qualities he looks for when hiring Links from today’s episode: 10% Happier by Dan Harris Joseph Goldstein The Advantage Sapiens If you liked this episode: Follow the podcast on Twitter Subscribe on iTunes or your podcast app and write a review Get in touch with feedback, ideas, or to say hi: nic {AT} startupbostonpodcast [DOT] com Music by: Broke For Free

To have a firm persuasion, to set out boldly in our work, is to make a pilgrimage of our labors, to understand that the consummation of work lies not only in what we have done but who we become while accomplishing the task. -David Whyte - Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity Show notes (and more): reboot.io/podcast In today’s conversation Jerry is joined by Ben Rubin - Cofounder and CEO of Change Collective - an organization itself that is set on helping people make positive change in their lives.
