In this episode Sue and Karen discuss the art of entrepreneurial resilience, drive, faith and grit required to achieve success as micro-entrepreneurs. Karen Lowe shares her journey of growing up in Jamaica, which Sue loves to chat about, then moving to Canada to pursue her Doctorate Degree in Business Administration. She started Dreamer 2 Creator Business Magazine in January 2019 (launched April 2019). The magazine is intended to educate and promote Canadian micro-entrepreneurs (small businesses) while promoting Canadian content. Bio: “I was 12, living in Jamaica; my mom bought my textbooks in the summer for me to start reading before classes began in September. After reading literature books, I went on to fiction for entertainment. I became a dreamer, seeing myself in every story I read, even history. At 14, I read a story of a consultant who owned a company, working remotely with people all over the world. Like that entrepreneur, I saw myself having virtual meetings with people around the globe. Virtual work or freelance entrepreneurship was not yet a thing. After many years of studying, I went on to become a creator and be the one to be having virtual business meetings.” Karen holds a BSc (Computer and Management Studies) degree from the University of Technology, Jamaica, an MBA from Schulich School of Business, Toronto and is currently studying for her Doctorate in Business Administration. After her MBA, she started Epigram Consulting Services, helping micro-entrepreneurs start their businesses and working through the kinks. She created Carys Belle, an eco-friendly handbag line. She is the author of From Dreamer to Creator: Reframing Deterrents in Our Paths, which was from lessons learnt from Epigram Consulting Services. This conversation is probably the most relatable one for Sue, as her and Mandy dive deep into the realistic approach to full body healthcare. Body Neutrality is something Mandy is passionate about with educating her clients (and the world), as the majority of people tend to bounce between extremes when it comes to fitness goals. Celebrating the small victories is really where the Magic happens! Bio: Hello! I’m Coach Mandy, and I’m your Unconventional Trainer – here’s why! We’re all told that exercise can improve mental health. However, we’re not educated on how we should use exercise to cultivate a healthy relationship between our mind, body, and soul. With fitness, it is extremely easy to focus solely on physical results, but the changes that truly matter lie within. This is why my fitness platform is different. In the Coach Mandy YYC community, we focus on how we feel, how we react, and how we bounce forward – above all else. In other words, mental health comes first. Here, aesthetic and physical changes are simply a natural by-product from a sustainable lifestyle between movement, food, and emotions. Amanda E. Smith, BScHNu; DipFHPR Owner, Coach Mandy YYC™ www.coachmandyyyc.com

“If you’re surviving, you’re not really living.” - This is a common reflection for Justyn as he navigates adulthood with very little support from his biological family. We learn in this episode that Justyn pretty much raised himself, along with his siblings, and has devoted his future to healing, self-care and overall awareness. Therapy, medication and support from friends, have been critical in pushing the needle forward for him. Justyn's story of how a young man has overcome the odds of childhood in order to show the world anything can be done. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jpaintingdesign/
“My mental health journey has been long and hard. I have dealt with depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma and my eventual diagnosis of bipolar II disorder. Talking about it is hard. Writing about it is hard. Admitting how bad it got is hard because I never really thought that my mental health would impact my ability to mother. I never thought that I would struggle so much with my own mental health that it would impact my children.” - Koa Hughes (The Great Canadian Woman; Vol 2) As a mother, Koa discusses the importance of leading the next generation when it comes to talking about mental health and learning how to listen to our bodies. Admit to yourself and then to your doctor if you’re struggling. Koa was referred to a psychiatrist which supported her wellness journey. It’s normal to be upset about your diagnosis and medications. You can’t just rely on medication or at least if you put in the effort on self care practices you will reach optimum health. Counselling can be beneficial. When you’ve lived in manic state it can be difficult to recognize what “normal” feeling good looks like. Celebrate the journey and how far you have come from where you started, even the little things along the way. You CAN be okay. You CAN be happy. You CAN live with a mental illness and live well. Sleep is one of the number one things you need to be on top of. Sleep routine impacts mental wellness immensely. Ask for support and find support that’s going to help you. It doesn’t have to be a lonely journey. It can be people over the internet as well. Follow people who make you feel good. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Bio: You can usually find Koa pounding away on her computer, writing books, blogs and growing her Instagram following as a Mental Health Advocate. Koa is a Published Author in the books, The Great Canadian Woman Vol 1 & 2 where she discusses how to not only survive, but thrive, with major mental illness, as well as how to navigate parenting while managing mental illness. Koa's formal education came in the form of a Bachelor's Degree with a double major in Psychology and Indigenous Studies and she is currently studying too become a Registered Counsellor. Koa uses her education to help her better understand how to help men and women face and overcome their own adversity. Adversity is something Koa knows well. Before becoming an Executive, Author, and blogger, Koa had been lost; hopelessly adrift in a sea of abuse, trauma, limiting beliefs and mental illness diagnoses. An unhappy combination of medication and booze kept her afloat. Through immense growth, Koa has taken on the belief that she was allowing all of her adversity to take place, and in order to grow, she had to become her own solution. Now, Koa spends much of her time advocating for others who suffer with mental illness by normalizing mental illness. She believes that those who suffer with mental illness shouldn’t shrink themselves to fit the life of a sick person, and instead mental illness can be embraced and accepted as a positive. With the launch of the first book - Sisterhood; The Path To Found, she opens up about how if she had allowed her fears to take the wheel, this book, this platform, would not be alive and thriving as it is right now. Bio: Born in Ontario, Canada, Falon grew up surrounded by the lakes and wilderness of the well-loved Muskoka region. Here she developed her love of the wild, raw beauty of our Mother Earth and all the creatures that live within her. It is this love and connectedness that has inspired her to delve deeper into her love of the visual arts she combines her artistic skill with the beauty of the world around her to create wondrous landscapes and other creative pieces. Alana Krzysztofik (Chris-toff-ick) is a first time mom living in Kitchener with her husband Nick, 7 month old daughter Brielle, their dog Wilfrid, and cat Pekoe. They love to spend time outside, exploring trails around their neighbourhood and are looking forward to getting back to normalized socializing with their friends and family. Alana is a grade 5/6 French Immersion teacher in Waterloo. She is loving mat leave but is also excited to see her staff and students again when she returns to work in September. Alana has loved each baby stage so far but is truly enjoying watching Brielle change, grow, and learn so much so quickly at this age. Her pregnancy experience was quite the emotional rollercoaster as it wasn’t always smooth sailing. She hopes that from her story other moms will take away that it is good to have a plan, but it is more than ok if your birth doesn’t follow that path. In her experience, Alana knew that she had a lot of factors to consider, and just having a safe delivery for both her and her baby was her plan. She wants other moms to know that while pregnancy is amazing, beautiful and scary all at once, the unknowns to us as new moms are the “knowns” to our midwives, OBs and nurses. Trust the process, ask lots of questions, and lean on your support system. Alana is more than happy to talk to anyone about their experience, or answer any questions. Diana Tulumba shares valuable insight from when she prepared for the natural birth of her son. Her concerns, fears, challenges, research and mindset, that all played a part throughout each stage of her pregnancy and beyond, as she navigates motherhood in this new chapter of life. Bio: I am a Long Island girl living in Austin Texas with my husband Pete and our sons Jack and Charlie (the furry one). My life consists of writing, coaching, mom and wife-ing. My intention daily is to stay present and open to life and my inner guidance. I don't know where I will be five years from now, but I know it'll be better than I can think of today. There is a lot of useless anxiety pervading us women and so I always end my bio with my favorite quote from A Course in Miracles... “There is a way of living in the world that is not here, although it seems to be. You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet.” Diana Tulumba, CTNC www.dianatulumba.com References shared in this episode: Each week I would read from MamaNatural’s Book to see what was going on with my baby and what I could do or expect. It was so helpful because it allowed me to just focus in on certain things without being overwhelmed by the plethora of information out there. I trusted I would get to everything I needed to know in the right timing so I didn’t stress that I didn’t know everything off the bat. https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Week-Week-Pregnancy-Childbirth/dp/150114667X?fbclid=IwAR39v0jx3-stTpdkVQMZ8XqQuN6yty6vjs0OEhMTopGN34la_RW1dhERDAQ I also mentioned this book Mystical Motherhood which grew my relationship and love for my son before he ever arrived. https://www.amazon.com/Mystical-Motherhood-Conscious-Guidebook-Conception-ebook/dp/B079HDHRQ2?fbclid=IwAR0iMTfumFBgylSNjL0HX8kKIo38o56TSNDWwEXaqCQ2oywVJVuvq9YSHKE Each morning I listened to Gabby Bernstein’s birthing affirmations https://gabbybernstein.com/birthingaffirmations/?fbclid=IwAR30Ee1TCBHdI39l_SL-0wJ0mLrpm7Ebe12wfomlhJ_duvqaSWVoi2NmtKM Raspberry Leaf Tea. Amber is no doubt a Manifesting Mama! She has given birth to 4 children over a 16 year span and has a lot to share on this topic. Certain aspects went to plan for her, and some things did not, but everything happened the way it was meant to be. Hi! I’m Amber. I am a Mama Bear of 5 amazing souls. We are a beautifully blended family who shares a whole lotta love. My children are my everything, but I’ve since learned, I am more than a mama. I’m a writer, a storyteller. I inspire people and encourage them to live, earn, impact and serve in this life as their souls were meant to. We all were created for something. Created with everything we would ever need within to succeed. Self discovery is the answer to unlocking all of that. I write about that. I write about it all. Website: www.youareabundantlyblessed.com
Amanda Cooke returns to the show - alone this time - to share her childbirth experiences and what went to plan for her and what did not. Sue, not-so-secretly, wishes that Amanda and her family would move to London so they could be neighbours, and their daughters could become BFF's, and they would all live happily ever after. Amanda Cooke, BA (sp. Hon), RMT, has a degree in Kinesiology and a background in fitness. She became a Registered Massage Therapist in 2011 and began practice at a busy multidisciplinary clinic in Mid-town Toronto where she practiced for 5 years doing both family and corporate wellness. She had her first child in 2014 and became much more interested in the perinatal world of Massage Therapy. In 2016 Amanda moved her practice to the East end and started working more and more with prenatal clients, postpartum women, and children. She had her second child in 2017 and took a break from practice to stay home with her two children and work with her husband on their growing continuing education company, ConEd Institute. After being a stay at home Mom for over a year, Amanda missed connecting with clients and decided to start a small private practice focusing a lot on women and prenatal and even took a course to become a Labour Support Doula. She attended her first birth in 2019 and cannot wait to be able to connect with more women going through this incredible journey. With this week being Nurse's Week, Sue talks to her favorite nurse friend, Peggy Birr. Peggy shares her experience with becoming a mother at a young age and the emotional walls she built up within her body since then. Because of everything she has learned along the way, and how Personal Development impacted her life a few years ago, she is now in a place of paying it forward to help other women through her coaching program called The Fulfilment Project. Peggy has been nursing for 29 years, most of those years have been in the ER but also includes time on obstetrics and rural nursing where you are the nurse of all trades. Peggy also worked as a flight nurse for 7 years, transferring patients world wide. Travelling everywhere from Canada, the USA and globally to places such as Russia, Budapest, South Africa and Japan, to name a few. Peggy’s passions include, her family, including three grown children and also now includes a grandson and a another grandbaby on the way. She loves to travel, explore and adventure. Some of her favorite places include airports and definitely being out in nature, especially anywhere near the water, the mountains and trails. For the last 3 years she has completed adventure races with her hubby of 29 years. Peggy hit a wall 6 years ago in her nursing career, feeling disconnected, frustrated, bitter, angry and unfulfilled. It was then that she realized she had been waiting on the wrong people for way too long, to change things. She had been waiting for so many others to change how she felt, only to learn SHE was actually the person to create the positive change she craved. Peggy’s newest passion in the last few years after her own life changing personal development journey is helping women elevate, helping them confidently step into and owning their own personal power and creating the positive change they crave. She truly believes if you can help another woman create a ripple, it will become a wave.
