Today's guest, Dr. James Cima, is a chiropractor with over 50 years of experience. He shares his journey from suffering severe back pain as a young man to becoming a chiropractor. Dr. Cima also discusses chiropractic care and its impact on overall health, how chiropractic can treat more than just physical pain, and his holistic approach to healthcare and living a long and healthy life. In this episode, we talk about: Dr. Cima's journey from experiencing severe back pain to becoming a chiropractor The importance of holistic healthcare and treating the person chemically, physically, mentally, and emotionally Role of nutrition in health and the importance of listening to your body's cravings Why the US healthcare system focuses on sickness instead of health and wellness Why healthcare costs are so high in the US How to live a long and healthy life until 150 years old Dr. Cima's new project for veterans healthcare Memorable Quotes “Health is a composite chemically, physically, mentally, emotionally, and you have to deal with all three sides.” “As long as you keep on taking care of the body chemically, physically and mentally emotionally, you're gonna be the one that's going to improve.” BIO: Born in New York City on October 10, 1948, I was one of the first wave of baby boomers. Growing up in New York City was a great challenge in many ways and prepared me well for life. I mean if you were not getting into fights, you had to use your street smarts to outsmart your enemies as well as the police. This prompted me to find another way, which was to stay in school, study hard, and become something. The truth is that I always wanted to be a doctor. As long as I can remember, that was what I wanted to be. It's funny how things worked out because years later, my wife told me she always wanted to marry a doctor. My early years were happy growing up in a tough, lower-middle-class ethnic mix of Italians, Irish, Germans, Polish Catholics, and Jewish people. Talk about bullying. That was all you experienced from the moment you left the safety of your apartment. From then on, you were fair game to anyone in the neighborhood, and you either fought like there was no tomorrow or there would be no tomorrow. So I developed a lot of street sense, knowing when to hit and when to run. I always hung around with a tough group of friends, which most people would call gangs. Whatever you call them, they were our protection, and I was part of their protection—a necessary evil. Of course growing up in Queens in the fifties through the seventies, you were always in awe of the wise guys, the Tony Soprano types. That intrigued me, but these guys played for real, and this was no TV show. One mistake and you were either dead or in jail, which was not so appealing. I am unsure how my life would have ended if it had not been for two defining moments. Turning Lemons into Lemonade My spinal injury and poor grades changed the destiny of my life. I suffered a severe, debilitating lower back injury in my early teens. I also had fair to mediocre grades in school. My advisor told me that I was not “college material” and recommended that I seek employment or join the armed forces during the Vietnam years or wind up in jail like some of my friends did. You could say that I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, with few, if any, options. I had no talents, and I didn't come from money. Somehow, my adviser asked me, “James, what do you like?” I told him I loved animals. He went over to this large file cabinet, searched through all the college files, pulled out one, and said, “Here is one school you might be able to get into if you pass an aptitude test.” Somehow I passed the test and instantly became college material. I was now a proud student enrolled in a state college's pre-veterinary program. From that day forward, I knew that I wanted to become a doctor and that I would not be any doctor but a doctor's doctor. I studied as hard as I could and raised my grades enough to get into Cornell University's pre-veterinary program. I graduated in the top 25 percent of my class. Not bad for not being college material. A Slight Shift in Direction During my early teen years, I developed severe back pain, which was thought to be congenital. I was born with a bad back, and because it was congenital, there was no way out. As I entered college, my back pain became debilitating to the point that something had to be done. My doctor did not want me to undergo surgery and suggested I tough it out, which I did, but you always heard stories about once you have a bad back you will always have a bad back. This was not fun to hear when you're eighteen, but it was true. One day it hit home while I was lying on the floor of my girlfriend's living room in severe pain when her father's friend asked me what was wrong. I told him my back was killing me, and he said don't worry, “It is going to get worse with age,” as he stepped over me and walked out the front door. Although it seemed cruel, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew he was right and that it was only going to get worse if I didn't correct the problem, but how? Had it not been for that epiphany, I probably would never have chosen the path I did. I decided to find out about back pain and was accidentally introduced to the field of chiropractic. I went to a doctor of chiropractic who helped me with my back problem. As I learned about the profession, I realized that they were able to treat many other health problems besides back pain. Well that just seemed to be the icing on the cake, because if I could just help people with low back pain, that in itself would have been a rewarding experience. That was it. I applied to what is now known as New York Chiropractic College, received my degree in 1976, and was off and running. As I was in my last year of school, I saw a quote from Thomas Edison about the doctor of the future: “The doctor of the future will give no medication but will interest his patients in diet, care of the human frame, and the cause and prevention of disease.” Although the definition was near perfect, there was no how-to manual that explained how the doctor was going to treat his patients. From that day forward I was hooked, and I wanted to become the doctor of the future. I devoted my life to health and wellness, and forty years later I have created a health and wellness program that lives up to Mr. Edison's vision of the doctor of the future. In 1980, I left New York City with my new bride Gloria, and, moved to beautiful Palm Beach, Florida. My wife and I started my practice in 1981 and raised a family of four— Natalie, Tiffany, James, and Alexandra, two are chiropractic physicians and now practice with me. We have 9 grandchildren with one on the way, and we hope to add a third generation to our practice. Our commitment is to offer the best health care available, which we always strive to achieve. Whether it is through education, treatment, or recommendations, our goal is to improve the health of this great nation, one patient at a time. Bio- Born on a dairy and tobacco farm, one of my chores was bringing in the cows for milking. I enjoyed walking over our 100 acres to get the cows, or just to be out in Nature. I had never heard of hiking trails…I followed the cow paths. After graduating from High School in 1963, I attended three different universities to achieve my BA in teaching, MA, and a Rank One (30 hours above the Masters). I taught at a Middle School for 20 years…Physical Education and Science. Then I taught Elementary PE until I retired after 27 years. I continued to substitute teach for many years, teaching mostly Science at the middle schools and high school. Before beginning long distance hiking, I was a “handler” for my friend who raced sled dogs. I scooped the poop, cleaned the dog lot, helped with feeding and training with four wheelers. We traveled to races in Wisconsin and Wyoming. I learned about the Appalachian Trail from a book, years before I could begin hiking it. Once I learned there was a footpath from Georgia to Maine, I read everything I could find about the trail. I fantasized & dreamed about one day having my own adventure. Finally, after reading Jean Deeds book…There Are Mountains to Climb…it was time for me to go. A Thru-hike, hiking the entire trail in one year, was my goal. But life got in the way…and so I was a section hiker. It took 4 years (1999, 2000, 2002, & 2003) for me to finish when I was in my 50's. Since then I have hiked many trails, not only in the US but also in Newfoundland, Scotland, Europe, and recently in Nepal. I am now 78 and still hiking…just looking for easier trails. Today on the show I speak to the wonderful, mother of 3, Reanne Waddell. Reanne came into this world at 27 weeks via c-section after her mother had a placental abruption. Reanne also contracted sepsis and spent the first few months of her life in hospital. Her start to life definitely wasn't the best and why I think her story is so amazing. Her first she had in hospital and ended in a c-section at the pushing stage which she says felt really let down about. For her second ,with the support of her husband and a doula she had a freebirth at home after disengaging her midwife half way through the pregnancy due to financial reasons. For her third she had a complete wild pregnancy and a longer (although still straight forward) birth. Reanne also touches on her breastfeeding struggles and how she realised that some of the struggles were related to trauma during childhood - I really appreciated her sharing this as I know it's not always easy to go there. Reanne is very mild mannered and quiet but really a powerhouse of strength underneath it all. I loved chatting to her and hearing her discoveries along the way. Bio: Born premature at 27+3, 27th June 1995 1 of 5 children, I'm the 4th child Born via emergency c section 1st 6 years of life was in Perth, then 7 years in Geraldton before moving back to Perth, where I've stayed since. This week we delve into the Eldritch world of HP Lovecraft and try and decode hidden magickal lessons. Mario Garza from Symbolic Studies from joins me to grill ‘Polaria' author WH Müller on his book ‘Polaria'. This week we discuss: Did Lovecraft encode a secret magickal lesson into each of his stories, what is ‘The Mystic Polar Tradition', Why was the Polar tradition hidden, and much more. Check out Mario's site here, and his YouTube channel here Main theme by Simon Smerdon (Mothboy) Music bed by chriszabriskie.com Good luck finding this book for less than £1500, check it on Amazon here WH Müller Bio: Born in 1964, I gained access to Kabbalah and various occult doctrines related to it through my interest in the American author HP Lovecraft. My first book was published in 1992 bearing the title “Lovecraft – Treasurer of the Forbidden”. In 1994 I published the first occult exegesis and translation of the Babylonian Epic of Creation in “Primordial Light” which was substantially enlarged in its second edition “Fiat Nox” in 1994. In the 1990s I was also a patron member of the British Museum Society. Besides, I always worked as a translator and was for example responsible for the first Nicholas-Roerich-biography by Jacqueline Decter. Further translations in the 1990s included works by WB Yeats and EA Wallis Budge. In 1996 I authored “Polaria – The Gift of the White Stone” on Lovecraft and Western Occultism which was published in the US. In 2001 I founded my own publishing company with two books on esoteric Traditionalism (Guénon) and related subjects of Alchemy as well as the first German translations of some of Suhrawardi's most eminent Sufi writings. After having positively identified Einstein's famous equation of Special Relativity in Kabbalah, I published “NecroYoga” in 2011 containing the Kabbalistic “threshold-equation” later termed “Moshe-Formula”, and partly based on a so-called “Babylon-Workout” on Kabbalah, Special Relativity and Black Hole ‘Physics which had appeared previously in Germany. My most recent translations include Nevill Drury's biography on the life and work of the Australian artist and occultist Rosaleen Norton and Stephen Flower's “Lords of the Left-Hand Path”. “Antarktos: Understanding the Age of Rebellion” in which I write comprehensively on the “real” secrets of Antarctica in connection with the ongoing conflict of the Old Ones vs. the Elder Ones, E.A. Poe's secret messages in “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym” and further revelations from Lovecraft's occult heritage, is due for publication soon.

There are several skills that are hard to build in students within the walls of a classroom. Skills like leadership, community building, survival, mentorship, global citizenship, and expedition planning. On expeditions outside of the classroom, these skills come naturally; whether it's assisting farmers plant in the marshes of Indonesia (pictured above), or cultural treks to learn about isolated tribes' way of living in the jungles of Thailand. Justin Bedard, co-founder of Jump! and expert Experiential Learning Facilitator leads teams of students in these kind of experiences on a regular basis. In partnering with schools, his team of facilitators grow global citizens, while supporting classroom teachers to transform from subject teachers to experiential learning facilitators. In our podcast interview, we learn as new experiential learning facilitators: The key components of experiential learning and how it differs from traditional learning How to support students in honing and developing these skills Create the conditions, big questions, and environment that allows for deeper experiential learning to take root within our schools and communities How to connect experiential learning opportunities meaningfully to our curriculum How to develop the mindsets and tool set required to shift from a teacher to experiential learning facilitators Connect with Justin: LinkedIn (@justinbedard12) Learn more about Jump!: https://jumpfoundation.org/ Take the 12 shifts scorecard around transitioning from teacher to facilitator: https://transformschool.com/12shiftsmastermind/ Sign up for the PBL Symposium on 'Building Student Agency Through PBL:' https://www.21c-learning.com/events/student-agency-and-pbl-symposium/ Justin's Bio: Born in Lilongwei, Malawi, Justin spent my childhood in Indonesia and formative years in China. Have you ever felt better about yourself after telling someone your story? Today we speak with author and cult survivor Gerette Buglion who guides others to tell their "I got out" stories in a process she calls Writing to Reckon. We start with a question from podcast listener Beth sent via Instagram, "What was your biggest motivation for telling your story and what were your hopes for it in the world?" We go deep into answers to those questions and also address the shame that people sometimes feel about discovering that they have been in a coercive situation. We talk about how writing your story can help you find a way back to yourself and why you might or might not want to share it and with whom. Support for writing your story can be found at igotout.org/empowerment including Gerette's free Writing to Reckon classes, or register here GeretteBuglion.com/writingtoreckon. Gerette finishes by sharing her three favorite writing prompts designed to help you reclaim your own power as you write your story. Her new book is a journal to help you flesh out your story. CavnessHR - CavnessHR delivers HR companies with 49 or fewer people with our HR platform and by providing you access to your own HRBP. www.CavnessHR.com Charlie's Bio Born in Boston, grew up in Weymouth, MA. Graduated H.S. in 1979 and moved to NY to attend Adelphi University just outside of NYC to major in acting. Graduated from Adelphi in 1983 and moved to London. Spent about a year in London working as an actor. Moved back to NYC in 1984 and spent the next five years working as an actor, director, and writer. Also worked as a bass player doing studio work, touring, and working with local musicians. Additionally, worked as an audio engineer. After a life changing event earlier in the year, moved to L.A. in late '89 and continued my career as a working musician, actor, and audio engineer. In late 1994, newly married and with our first child on the way, took a job at Microsoft as a video teleconferencing engineer and spent the next 20 years at Microsoft working in several capacities: engineer, project manager, program manager, service manager, team manager, etc. I had been working on and off as a professional photographer since 1978; my first professional gig was photographing the band Queen at the Boston Garden for a small local music magazine. I continued photographing bands as well as people throughout the 80s and in 1994 decided I wanted to eventually make photography my primary career within five years. In 1999, the same year I opened my business to work concurrently with my job at Microsoft, my son was diagnosed with autism which put my plans to open my business on hold as we needed the benefits. That proved to be the right choice as, thanks to all the therapies Microsoft afforded us, my son became a normal “pain-in-the-ass” teenager is now, at age twenty-four, considered one of the top up and coming jazz saxophonists on the West Coast. In 2008, I created a project called “Stories of Autism” which, over the next ten years, documented the lives of families with members on the autism spectrum by creating and exhibiting portraits and stories of each family's experience. The project became a non-profit organization involving over 250 photographers across the country and documenting the lives of over 500 subjects. The images were exhibited across the country as well as in an online gallery. In 2014, I was part of a mass layoff at Microsoft and decided to go full time into my photography business working mostly as a commercial photographer. In the summer of 2019, I was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease which causes intermittent hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo. The episodes of vertigo became too unpredictable to work as a commercial photographer with thousands of dollars on the line. Knowing that the unpredictability of the vertigo episodes would be a risk to my business, during the pandemic I began studying the methods of Peter Hurley, considered the best headshot photographer in the world. Then, in January of 2022, I transitioned my commercial photography business into a business focused almost entirely on headshots. Unexpectedly, that year became my most successful ever for my business and I'm looking to continue its growth in 2023. Jay's Bio - Born and raised in San Diego, I have had the privilege to play baseball, year around, since the age of 4. Playing the game was great, but now having the opportunity to coach and train young players is where my passion lies today. Playing the game of baseball presented me with multiple scholarship offers to colleges like Texas Southern University, Ottawa University and others. I decided to attend Arizona State University, had an opportunity to walk on to the baseball team, but was instructed to play on their club baseball team for the next two years. That led me to the decision to hang up the cleats and focus on my studies. I graduated with a BA in Social and Behavioral Science in 2015, and since then I have moved back to San Diego, started coaching baseball again, and completed my Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership and Development. Being away from playing I have been more of a student of the game of baseball, than ever before. I have an excitement for teaching young players tools and skills that I wish I had growing up. As a player development trainer for the San Diego Stars Baseball Academy, my aim is to continue to branch out to other players as well. To help them develop skills and knowledge of the game, that they may not learn from their neighborhood little league, local high school, and even college. The goal is to assist with their advancement as a ball player, improve their skills and increase their confidence.https://pryordevelopment.wixsite.com/develop --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In this episode, you'll also hear:How experiencing rejection and loneliness led Lystra to reach out to others who felt outcasted and aloneHow to push through and let go of baggage from the pastThe importance of standing up for what you believe to be your calling from God – even if it means facing persecutionThe root cause of procrastination and how to overcome itLystra's advice for those who find it hard to stay hopeful in the face of persecution or doubtsBe sure to read all the way to the end for important links and information! It's so easy to get boxed in, and to let others dictate who we are and what we do. But Lystra Wilson is here to encourage you to resist. To stand up for yourself and who God called you to be. It's your own journey, and you are the one that's accountable for the gifts, skills, and talents that God has placed in you. So don't be afraid to be different, to blaze your own trail and to chart your own course. You see, Lystra has also had to battle this. She's had to fight to be distinctly different, and now she's on a mission to encourage others to step into the fullness of who God has called them to be. God has a plan for you, and your calling is much bigger than anything anyone could ever imagine. So let Lystra encourage you not to give up on yourself. No matter how hard things seem, the best is yet to come. Rejection Starts EarlyLystra says her experience with rejection started from the very beginning of her life. As a baby, she was put up for adoption. Though she was adopted into a wonderful Christian family who raised her in the Pentecostal Church, she always had a sense of being somewhat on the outside. “In a Pentecostal Church, there's lots of activity,” she explains. “Lots of loud music, lots of people shouting and being free to be who they are. But somewhere in the midst of that, I always felt kind of tied up.” Though she watched others being free to jump, raise their hands, sing, or stand up and testify, she often felt embarrassed to do the same. Or, if she did work up the courage to step up and lead, she found herself facing backlash or even ridicule. On top of that, she looked very different from her adoptive family, and always felt like she didn't quite fit in with other children her age. But as she grew up, Lystra found ways to help others who felt the same way.“It just became my thing over time that I would make friends with the underdog, the person who was eating lunch by themselves, the kid at church who didn't have a bunch of friends circled around them,” she recalls. “I would go to that person and start talking to them and make friends with them. Somehow, I guess I felt I could relate or because I didn't want them to be by themselves. I was willing to be their friend. Now, Lystra realizes this is one of her gifts: wanted to help people find healing, happiness, and purpose, free from the burdens and loneliness of their pasts.Carrying Too Much BaggageIn Lystra's experience, Satan often tries to take circumstances we've been through – things like abuse or neglect that have happened to us – and turn them into our identity. When we hold onto the bitterness and pain of those circumstances and think of them as our identity, it can hold us captive, blocking our prayers and our spiritual potential. “All of that baggage you're holding onto is taking space in your soul,” Lystra adds. “So you don't have room for beauty. You don't have room for the good things, the identity, the love of God and the fruit of the Spirit.” She explains that the way to clear out the pain and bitterness and make room for goodness is to recognize the difference between what the Enemy is doing and what God's plan is. When we succeed at shifting our mindset in this way, it empowers us to push through the barriers that are in our path. To illustrate, Lystra gives the example of a traveler carrying far too many bags. “It's like you're going to the airport and you've got five or six bags you're trying to roll around,” she says. “The end result of that is you're exhausted… But at the end of the day, if you were to drop the baggage, you might have enjoyed your trip.” Think about it: what joys of life have you missed because you were too busy carrying other baggage? What can you do to let some of that burden go, so you'll be free to pursue your calling and realize your potential?Context MattersLystra's desire to see people set free from their baggage eventually led her to publish her book, Five-Fold Females, which helps women identify their gifts for ministry and step into leadership. She explains that many women in the church have been rejected as leaders despite being gifted and called by God. “I wrote the book to help women who were being persecuted and held out of leadership positions,” Lystra says. “Titles that they feel called to in their soul, but they were not ‘allowed' by men to hold these offices because of a couple of scriptures that people are taking out of context.”Lystra believes it's essential that we study the Bible in context, so we can understand what the Scriptures are really saying within the context of when they were written. She wants women to view themselves as God created them – not as other people have told them they must be. “That's why I wrote the book: to help those women who may have grown up in those various denominations and were told they couldn't be leaders, and so they've never examined that they might be,” she concludes. “So examine yourself – and not only not from this perspective, what people say you can't do, but from the perspective of what God created you to do.”Maybe you've been there. Maybe you had an idea of what your calling might be, but it just didn't seem acceptable in your circles. As a result, you've squashed that desire, believing it must not really be your calling. If that's you, Lystra wants to remind you that your calling isn't always going to be popular. History is full of amazing leaders who were persecuted and killed for the work they were called to accomplish. Like those leaders, you might need to take a revolutionary stand for change. Or you may simply need to move to a new environment – maybe even a new church – where you will no longer be stifled. However, this kind of action is also often discouraged in Christian circles. Many people who move to a new church experience guilt-tripping and being called “church-hoppers.” But sometimes, as Lystra has seen, leaving may be the best thing you can do. “God did not call me to be in a box and taped up where other people cannot experience His glory through me,” she says. While her intention is never to break up families or ministries, Lystra does believe it's important for us to remember that the permission to be who God has created us to be comes from God alone – not other people's approval. Defeating the Procrastination GiantLystra says that while the writing of her book only took about a month, getting it published was another story. Not only did she face external challenges – including persecution from fellow Christians – but she also had to battle her own fears that were holding her back. “There's something about making something permanent that makes you feel like you're so vulnerable out there for people to say you're wrong, or for people to persecute you in some kind of way,” Lystra explains. “And so the enemy wants to put that fear in you and raise that up, so that you believe it so much that you never do it.”That's why Lystra says procrastination is rooted in fear. Specifically, the fear of “What if?” Sometimes it's the fear of what others will think when they read it. Other times it's the fear of failure and not living up to your calling. And sometimes it's the fear of succeeding and having to move on and find something else to fill the void left by the project you've been working on for so long. Lystra compares those “what if” fears with the story of David and Goliath. Just as none of the Israelite soldiers wanted to take on the giant Goliath, most of us would prefer to avoid our “what if”s. But, like David, we need to learn to run toward our fears instead. “You have to push past your inner fear of what people are going to say, because the fear of people, the fear of man, it's a false fear,” Lystra explains. “Because most of the time, people will celebrate the thing that you are most afraid of.” Despite her own fears and family crises, Lystra was able to push through by trusting that God had called her to publish this book because it was important. She pictured herself as a sort of David, championing the cause of the women she had been called to help. Though it meant sacrificing sleep and facing tough challenges, she knew she was working for the greater cause of God's Kingdom – and that was enough to keep her going. The Enemy Is Afraid of YOUMaybe you find yourself in a similar place. You've tried to step into your calling and the true identity of who God created you to be, but you've fallen under attack because of it. Now you're tired, weary, and finding it hard to stay positive and hopeful. If that's you, you're not alone. For those who have suffered rejection, abandonment, or feeling like they aren't good enough, Lystra offers encouragement and hope: you can heal from past hurts, move into your calling, and fulfill the purpose God has in store for you. “If you continue to get hit, you continue to get stolen from – the enemy's attempts to steal, kill, and destroy keep hitting your front door – then you know that you have something valuable,” Lystra says. “You know that you have gold inside. You have something that is not just for your own self and your family, but it's for the world. You have something that's not going to just affect your life, but it's going to affect generations inside of you. And that's the part that the enemy wants to stop.”When you push through that fear and step into your calling with God's help, you have the power to affect not only your own life, but also the lives of others for generations to come. Joe's Definition of Fitness - "The ability to tolerate and adapt to changes" Joe's Bio: Born and raised on Staten Island, I made my way up to Connecticut for graduate school, where in 2010 I completed my Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy at Sacred Heart University. I have since been a physical therapist in New York City for over 10 years, and have seen (and been a part of) both the good and the bad of the healthcare system. Throughout my time as a PT I always wanted more. More for myself, and more for my patients. Through my experiences, time with mentors, countless continuing education courses, teaching around the world, and my own personal battle with depression, I began to question what I could actually do as a Physical Therapist, and perhaps more importantly, what I could do better as a human being. I began to develop a style of care that centered around education, empowerment, and communication. It was there I discovered the importance of empathy and compassion, and how these tools were the biggest thing missing in my ability to help people in the past. Coupled with the birth of my daughter in 2014, these events and thoughts helped me re-shaped my view on life and my career. I started Strength in Motion Physical Therapy in 2018 with the goal of truly being able to deliver a patient centered model that was of the standards I, and patients, expected and deserved. We explore how he saw opportunity in an industry that already had high competition and how he really helps everyone who is involved in taking his product to the market win. What you'll learn in this episode: How to take advantage of the chance to constantly be challenged in your industry Working with a spouse in a business in a way that honors their individual desires Finding opportunity and integrity in a highly competition market The difference between ego-driven business vs need-driven business Sean's view on how they achieved their quick success Raising children in a 1st Gen family business Exposing children to all sides of the business The particular burden that can fall on the Second Gen and how to avoid it A creative approach to choose product offerings Using trust and faith to lower stress and avoid panic Resources: Website: https://www.seanminorwines.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seanminorwines/?hl=en Bio: Born in Kansas, Sean Minor was surrounded by agriculture, hard work, and the values responsible for the unwavering work ethic of Midwestern families. The practice of caring for the land and bringing the harvest to the dinner table has always been close to Sean's heart, and winemaking celebrates this concept to its full extent. His career in wine began after a formal education in finance from Arizona State University where he also met his wife, Nicole. They moved to California after graduation, where Sean began his fine wine career working for Napa Valley's Beaulieu Vineyard. He knew right from the start the wine industry was the right place for him. He began taking classes at U.C. Davis in Viticulture and Enology in hopes of developing a further understanding of grape growing and wine production. Sean and Nicole moved to the Pacific Northwest after being recruited by King Estate Winery (widely renowned for producing some of Oregon's most highly regarded Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris) to manage the Estate. He developed an even stronger knowledge of winemaking and learned firsthand the importance of site-specific viticulture. He ended up leaving King Estate to lead Benton Lane Winery, rounding out his cool climate viticulture experience. Sean, Nicole, and their three kids (the fourth yet to be born) returned to California in 2001 for the opportunity to manage Renwood Winery and enhance his experience growing and marketing some of the Golden State's best Zinfandel and Syrah. Four years later, he founded Sean Minor Wines. Today, Sean Minor Wines is distributed and sold in 49 States and 15 International Countries. The wines are carried in over 11,000 accounts nationally and have grown in prestige and notoriety, while gathering accolades and high scores from the top wine critics and publications around the world.

Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning-in today for a new episode of Entrepreneur Mindset-Reset, THE podcast where entrepreneurs just like you and me share how they master their mindset to overcome obstacles to their success. In today's episode, I am thrilled to be speaking with the passionate and very-dedicated-to-music, David Joseph of School of Rock Chapel Hill. David took a leap of faith back in 2017, and left his corporate gig to start a music school! David is the owner and General Manger of School of Rock in Chapel Hill, NC, which is a franchise of the School of Rock, inspiration for the movie with the same name. David reminds us that our life skills are transferrable, so we should always aim to find something that we love and take it out into the world. This shows up so much in David's dedication to the success not only of his School of Rock location, but also in how he supports the success of students and staff. School of Rock provides music education, and so much more for all aspiring musicians, from tiny tots to retirees. In addition to music education, the opportunities for press coverage, live gigs and live-streamed gigs, builds impressive resumes for young musicians, many of whom go on after high school to study music and become professional musicians. David's success tips are all great, but the one that really struck me was this: Proceed as if success is inevitable. Let me repeat that: Proceed as if success is inevitable. I would add: when you believe it, you'll see it, so proceed as if success is inevitable. So, grab a beverage or a snack and settle-in to listen to David and his amazing journey. David's professional career includes finance, operations, and control roles in several national retailers (Hecht's, Zany Brainy, Saks 5th Avenue), as well as consulting, strategic planning, corporate development, M&A, and competitive and market intelligence in the software industry (SAP, SAS). And then there is music… David is passionate about live music, and rock and roll in particular. It's been that way forever. His favorite teenage memories involve playing the drums with his bandmates. Opening the School of Rock Chapel Hill in 2017 has been more than a business opportunity for David. It's been a musical mission to give back to the community he has come to call home. In 1999, David and his family moved to Chapel Hill, NC. He loves the community and its vibrant musical scene. He and his wife of 26 years (Sally), his son (Chris, 24) and daughter (Evie, 21) enjoy travelling, dining out, live music and live sports…and look forward to the time when all of those activities can be enjoyed with crowds again! ####Bio- Born 1894 in Rockland, Maine, and eventually the family moved to Boston. - Early on, Piston considered becoming an artist instead of a musician. He actual finished his degree in painting at the Massachusetts Normal Art School. He spoke of the transition quote > “I went to art school and earned money on the side playing the violin and the piano. I kept getting more and more interested in music, and by the end of the senior year I was entirely devoted to it; but by then I was so near to graduation I decided to finish up school and I got my diploma as a painter.”- Since the Piston's didn't have a piano around until they moved to Boston, Walter picked up the violin and reportedly practiced so much his mother complained. That is ABSOLUTELY not something that would have happened in my house growing up! Quite the opposite...- One quote of Piston is just funny on its own, but also shows his continuous curiosity. Before he began his studies at Harvard, he seems to have wanted to get ahead of the draft, entering the Navy Band at MIT. He explained quote “when the war cam, the First World War, that is, and it became obvious that everybody had to go into the service, I wanted to go in as a musician. I couldn't play any band instrument, but I knew instruments and I knew that the saxophone was very easy.” HAHAHAHA! Oh, but he wasn't done. “So I... bought a saxophone, and stopped by at the public library to get an instruction book. I learned enough to play by ear. In a very short time I was called and I tried out for the band. I didn't pretend to read the part but just played notes that went with the harmony, and I was accepted.” So that's it?? Not only, in his own version of the story anyway, did he prove that quote “saxophone was very easy”... really? That was the standard for getting into the Navy Band at MIT in the early 20th century? No need to actually read the music, just play something that sounds like music, based on what they put in front of you... Were I a comedian I'm sure that whole thing would be ripe for material!- Piston married Kathryn Nason, who kept her maiden name. She was an artist, and though it seems she rarely exhibited her work, she was very involved in the advocacy for her medium.- The couple had no interest in and never had children. Instead they tended gardens and raised dogs and cats. In fact, Piston actually once confessed “Some of my best musical ideas come to me while I'm spreading manure.”- Now, Piston and his wife seemed to be of the Bohemian sort, passionate about art and music, preferring life exploration to outright money and security. They were part of a free-living group of people that lived in an un-urbanized area of Belmont, Maine, called “The Hill”. They got drunk often, discussed visual art, and even regularly held nude sketching parties. Since mostly you will only find pictures of the SENIOR Mr. Piston, this is an unfortunate image to have... but I digress. Though it may seem a youthful time, this was Piston's way of life while he did a great deal of his serious composing.- While teaching at Harvard, Piston maintained quite a furtive compositional pace. In all, he wrote nearly 80 works that ran the gamut of the art music medium.####Culture- If you have ever had life kick you in the teeth, you understand the Einstein quote “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.” In a way, Walter Piston had this figured out for himself early on when he reluctantly decided he was going to be a composer. Admitting to a reunion of the Harvard Class of 1924:> After graduation I spent two years in Paris... I discovered [then] that I would probably become a composer. Now it is not from choice that one becomes a composer but rather, it seems, one does it in spite of everything even against one's better judgement. But writing long-haired music is not a way to make a living...- Concurrent with teaching and composing, he wrote four academic texts that are still discussed and argued about to this day: Principles of Harmonic Analysis, Harmony, Counterpoint, and Orchestration.- The fact that Piston developed, published, and continuously edited his academic texts would suggest that he is by and large of an analytical mindset. However, even in those texts he offers warnings and nuggets of wisdom along the way, cautioning against taking theoretical study too far. In Counterpoint, Piston spends the first chapter discussing “melodic curve”, instructing that “the outline of a melody may be perceived by simply looking at the music” and that “the word curve is useful to suggest the essential quality of continuity”. Then, after giving many examples and explaining his methodology, Piston makes sure to point out “it is important to see that in the process of analysis and simplification we do not destroy or lose sight of those details of a melody which are the essence of its individuality and expressive quality.” This statement is telling of his own philosophy on composition itself. Putting it succinctly, from the preface to Harmony, “[music theory] tells not how music will be written in the future, but how music has been written in the past.” So, as much as Piston wrote about theory, about theories about theory, and edited the books he wrote about those theories on his own theory... he held the perspective that composition is an organic event, not to follow a prescribed path. This concept absolutely plays out in his work, as we will see with his Symphony No. 2.- Musicologist and biographer Howard Pollack does a great job of getting to the core of Piston's compositional individuality. In his book _Walter Piston and His Music_, Pollack says “One steady and important aspect of Piston's music is his ability to give an advanced twentieth-century idiom the sort of motion and direction one finds in eighteenth and nineteenth-century classics, and this he does by asserting such principles as pulse, melodic curve, harmonic rhythm, tonal design, and symmetrical form. In fact, all the musical elements, including dynamics and color, are responsive to form and movement.”- An interesting thing Piston said himself about what it is like to compose a piece gives us a bit of incite into his thinking. Quote “I used to tell my students, as soon as you put down one note you've changed the conditions, and then you have to consider the others in relation to this, whereas before you put it down, you're free. On the other hand, you've got to be ready to throw that away, and that takes courage...” I'm sure this mirrors the writing process quite closely.- Symphony No. 2, written 1943, premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra in 1944.- Obviously, the timing of completion and premiere can't be separated from WWII. Whether or not Piston intended it, this 2nd Symphony draws American patriotic association. Personally, I am not in agreement that the external factors effecting the composer him or herself will by default manifest itself literally in the music. Though, a few musician quotes from early performances show a strong emotional response. Hans Kindler, who conducted the premiere, said “[The Symphony] is without even the shadow of a doubt one of the half dozen great works written during the last ten years. It sings forever in my heart and in my consciousness, and Dow not want to leave me. Even Erich Leinsdorf wrote “The performance of your Symphony which took place last night was, to me personally, the most gratifying experience with any score that has seen daylight within the last ten or fifteen years.” Well, we have to hear some of it after reviews like that!###Analysis of piece####Overall scope- Piston's Symphony No. 2 is written in 3 movements: Moderato, Adagio, Allegro. 3 movement symphonies are a less used format. Usually 4 movements is standard, as established by Haydn and Mozart. But, it was not uncommon, and knowing Piston's knowledge of form we can confidently assume he had strong reasoning to go this route. Even the movements themselves are basically in sonata form, though the sound and inflection is undeniably Pistonian.####Excerpts- In the first movement Moderato, the opening theme is a serious, lyrical unfolding from the very beginning, presented at first in unison with little accompaniment.- The second theme is a dramatic contrast to the first, playful, off kilter, almost tongue-in-cheek.- In the recap, Piston brings this theme back in a bigger, more filled out capacity adding brass and more percussion to boost the moment.- However, to close the movement this sort of fanfare becomes a calm brass chorale, ending just with the same seriousness as he began.- The Adagio movement, on the other hand, has a completely different feeling. Like home, down to earth. After a brief introduction to set the soft texture, syncopated pulses in the strings accompany a gorgeous clarinet solo, crafted and presented with simple delicacy.- Throughout this movement, even as it expands to climaxes and contracts back from them, the tenor of sensuousness never gives way. Even as the sound slowly builds to the ultimate moment of tension, the feeling is of complete organic overflow.- Incidentally, it was this 2nd movement that Leonard Bernstein conducted as a tribute to Piston upon his death.- The final movement, Allegro, begins with a pop, racing energy, and a characteristic Piston horn call, followed by a semi-fugue, all setting the stage for a quick, intense closing.- When this same material is repeated it is appropriately right at the height of excitement as Piston barrels into the recap.- Then to close out the whole of the symphony, Piston pushes forward the motion while letting out all the energy. He even pulls back the tempo for one brief moment, and then like a slingshot shoots off to the rousing finish!###Closing- Honestly, most of the orchestral pieces in Piston's portfolio deserve to be heard, analyzed, and enjoyed, most notably including his 8 numbered symphonies, the ballet _The Incredible Flutist_, _Three New England Sketches_, and Serenata for Orchestra. Carrying on his legacy, not only will his theory texts continue to be discussed for many decades to come, after teaching at Harvard for 34 years, his long list students include some recognizable names such as Samuel Adler, Leroy Anderson, Arthur Berger, Leonard Bernstein, Elliott Carter, and Colon Nancarrow.- Piston's music is moving and on the edge of what came to be a new sound in American music. Even now, his pieces have a distinctiveness of both depth and quality. As we continue to perform and hear his music, we will come to know more of the character of this great composer.Music:Symphony No. 2By: Walter PistonPerformed By: Gerard Schwarz, Seattle Symphony OrchestraCourtesy of Naxos of America, Inc.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/american-muse-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
In this episode, I sit down with my friend and colleague, Donovan Hall, to have a discussion about his background playing professional rugby and how this led to his trajectory into educational leadership. Donovan is the Director of Educational Technology at The KAUST School in Saudi Arabia and, as you can imagine, was faced with the challenging task of getting the entire organization ready for distance learning during the COVID-19 public health crisis. Once distance learning was up and running, he and his team had to make sure that all stakeholders in the school had the support they needed to do their best work possible. Donovan shares this experience, what he has learned about himself as a leader, and how he and his team continue to think about the next steps needed to keep the school moving in the right direction. Thank you Donovan for your time and willingness to share your journey.
