On this week's episode, we review some of the recent action out of Washington, including what's going on with federal funds, the impact of Trump's executive orders on some youth with lived experience, and who is temporarily leading child welfare and youth justice policy. We also break down the findings from a report on health care for youth who have aged out of foster care, and a new bill that would fund post-adoption support. This was a fantastic episode to record, Rebecca draws on her experience as an adoptive parent to a child impacted by FASD as well as being a practicing social worker as we talk about FASD and the challenges families face getting help. To be honest it's such a critical topic we cartwheel around it. Rebecca wrote the following: "I am a doctoral researcher at Birmingham City University. My research looks at post adoption social work with families with a child with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of FASD (Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) from the perspectives of social workers, parent carers and children. I am seeking participants who are social workers in the field of post adoption social work and have experience of working with children with a confirmed of suspected diagnosis of FASD to complete the this questionnaire here." Hello and welcome to this special edition of the A&F Podcast. In this episode we're sharing a keynote speech that I gave to the CoramBAAF post adoption support conference to mark the release of the their best practice guide by Caroline Thomas and John Simmonds. I tried to ground the talk in the lived experience of families but there was certainly much more that could have been said. I hope you find it interesting and please let us know what you think. Hello and welcome to episode 183 of the Adoption and Fostering Podcast. We had a plan but got slightly sidetracked by the good news of FASD Ireland's funding success. That led us down a rabbit hole in terms of how do we affect change, what are the levers we need to pull and what are the challenges. We unpick that then Al has some feedback from CoramBAAF's post adoption conference and we run through that. We also check in with Al and get an update on his solo parenting experiment as well as the usual infobantz. There was swearing but nothing too bad, beware ye. “If you, as the white adoptive parent, are comfortable, you're not doing it right. Because your kid is uncomfortable.” - Katie Wynen Are you touched by transracial adoption? Or do you know any adoptees who were adopted transracially? How do you personally frame transracial adoption? Some common rationalizations include the belief that love is enough, that colorblindness is the solution, and that children will assimilate easily into their new culture. But this episode will challenge those cultural norms which are based on white privilege. Stay tuned as our guest, transracial adoptee and adoption professional, Katie Wynen, shares her truth about ethical practices in transracial adoption. In this episode, you will be able to: Understand the complexities of transracial adoption and how to navigate them effectively. Find support and insight to do the very best you can as adoptive parents in a diverse family dynamic. Recognize and combat the impact of white supremacy on transracial adoptive families. Discover strategies for helping a transracially adopted child navigate their racial identity in a loving and supportive environment. My special guest is Katie Wynen Katie Wynen is a transracial, Colombian adoptee who holds a Master's degree in Social Work and boasts over a decade of experience as an adoption professional. Having studied under Dr. Joyce Maguire Pavao in Boston, Katie's professional journey led her to join the staff of Pact: An Adoption Alliance in 2012. In her role, she is involved in adoption placement, leading adult adoptee support groups, and providing adoption education on a national scale. Notably, Katie's commitment to advocating for adoptees, particularly those who are people of color and LGBTQ+, was acknowledged with the Angels in Adoption 2019 award from the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. With her extensive personal and professional background, Katie is a key resource for gaining insights into ethical practices in transracial adoption.
I look at my kids and the things that they've had to adapt to in culture and learn language. It's heroic to do what they've done. And so as a parent, I really felt our responsibility as parents is to step into that challenge and to just try to help them to negotiate that as much as we possibly can. Hi Neighbor, Joining me in this episode is, Dr. Rick Morton. Rick is the Senior Vice President of Engagement at Lifeline Children's Services, the largest evangelical Christian adoption agency in America. Rick is also an adoptive parent of 3 children, all of whom were adopted internationally. If you are considering international adoption, this is an episode you don't want to miss. Brothers and sisters, or sibling groups, are often one of the groups of children who often wait the longest for their forever families. These siblings have such a unique, and powerful bond and they have often been through extremely difficult circumstances and in most situations have been the only constant within each other's lives. So when it comes to our family groups, we always try our best to keep them together and need adopters who can consider adopting siblings. We always ask our adopters if they could open their minds and consider whether they could adopt siblings, which we know can seem a little daunting, but rest assured that we have the Adoption Support team to help and support both you and the children. For our current Do you know our children? campaign I sat down to chat with Andrea, who along with her husband adopted their two boys. We not only find out about their story, but we also talk openly about the challenges that they encountered and the fantastic joys too. . If hearing andrea's story has got you considering adopting siblings then we would love to hear from you. My fraaaands! Do you get lonely in college? Maybe you're fine in everyday life, until a big issue comes up and you need support or just someone to talk to! I know how that feels! You see people posting videos of their #friendshipgoals and their friend group, and you LONG for the same. You probs want a Christian friend group, but in the past maybe they've been the most petty and judgmental of friends. Ain't nobody got time for that! This is the exact opposite of what Christians should be like! I have some steps today on how to find a legit friend group, and an anchor of community in your life! Might be a bit different than you're expecting, though. When I say friend group, this includes other people, but also with yourself and God, so we'll include all 3! Sooooo, college is lonely. Finding support in school is a challenge. But one of the greatest things I had is a weekly group of godly peers who had devotions together, shared our hearts, and just laughed and ate food! I'm Kara Walker, a twenty-something entrepreneur, amateur snowboarder, recovering over-achiever, and debt-free college graduate. In college, I too was a stressed college student, looking for money and mental peace. I wondered if there were other ways to pay for college besides loans, and wished for clear direction on how to make college and career decisions! Not only was I worried about drowning in debt, but also afraid I hadn't heard Jesus correctly. Was I studying the wrong thing? Was I completely off track? I felt semi-out of control and was spiraling, until I learned how to hear from God and follow His direction. He guided me and gave me the stepping stones to pay for college. Scholarships, grants, testing out of classes, and other weird school hacks got me through debt-free! And, I'm here to teach you HOW to do this, too. The adoption process is a lifelong process, it doesn't end the day a child is adopted by a family. This is an important point that is all too often missed. Especially in unique cases where a child is placed into split custody with their biological family and interracial and LGBTQ headed family. Our guest on today's episode lived this reality, and found many of the struggles he went through were not understood or acknowledged. Tony Hynes, author of The Son With Two Moms, and training specialist at The Center for Adoption Support and Education, also known as C.A.S.E, joins us to share his story of growing up with two white moms as a Black child, while being in split custody with his biological family. Tony's mission is to spread awareness around adoption to change people's perceptions regarding adoption, and to shed light on the unique unseen issues that arise throughout an adoptee's lifespan. Issues such as interracial adoption situations, as well as being adopted by LGBTQ parents and split adoption with biological families. In this episode, you will hear Tony's journey growing up in an interracial and queer headed household as well as the type of counselling C.A.S.E. offers and the impact they've had on families.Connect with Tony:WebsiteInstagramConnect with Jamie at Truman Charities:FacebookInstagramLinkedInWebsiteYouTubeEmail: info@trumancharities.comThis episode was post produced by Podcast Boutique https://podcastboutique.com/

Today, on Midday, a conversation about the Foster Care System. Nearly 430,000 children and young people are currently in the care of foster families. About 112,000 of them are hoping to be adopted permanently. And for the young people who “age out” of the system on their 18th or 21st birthdays, the challenges are daunting, and the statistics are devastating.Only three to four percent of young people who are foster care alumni earn a college degree by the age of 26. One in five will experience homelessness. Only half will be employed. 7 of 10 female foster youth will become pregnant by the time they are 21, and one in four foster youth will experience PTSD.Tom’s guests include Shalita O’Neale, Founder and Executive Director of the Fostering Change Network. Fostering Change is producing a conference this weekend at Johns Hopkins Medicine to connect people in the system with resources and networking opportunities. And joining us on the line from the studios of NPR in Washington is Jelani Freeman. Like Shalita O’Neale, he is a product of the foster care system. He is an attorney who serves as a court appointed special advocate for foster children in Washington, and he sits on the board of the Center for Adoption Support and Education. We will also hear testimony from Luigi Kramer, a 22 year old college student and foster care alum who has recently transitioned out of the system; and Lisa Phillips an entrepreneur and alum who was taken into care in the 1980’s.
