In this episode of The Adoption Roadmap Podcast, Part 2, Dr. Tony Hynes (author of The Son with Two Moms and training specialist at the Center for Adoption Support and Education) goes deeper on what adoptive parents must understand about race, language, and true openness. We unpack the Multiethnic Placement Act (MEPA) and its real-world ripple effects, why “love is enough” and colorblind approaches fail kids, and practical ways white adoptive parents can prepare to raise Black children well. Tony explains why the language we use (interracial vs. transracial) shapes outcomes, how faith communities can unintentionally reinforce colorblindness, and concrete steps to keep teens close—even when they roll their eyes. We close with what a truly healthy open adoption looks like beyond visits: ongoing, courageous conversations, shared history, and permission for your child to love all of their family.Important Links• RG Adoption Consulting → https://rgadoptionconsulting.com• Book a 30-Minute Consult → https://rgadoptionconsulting.com/contact• The Son with Two Moms by Tony Hynes• Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.) → https://adoptionsupport.orgAdoption Mosaic → https://adoptionmosaic.com/BIPOC Adoptees → https://www.bipocadoptees.org/Families Rising → https://wearefamiliesrising.org/On Your Feet Foundation (support for birth parents) → https://onyourfeetfoundation.org/The Adoption Continuum (Founding Member Waitlist) → https://www.rgadoptionconsulting.com/waitlistChapters00:00 – 02:15 Sponsor: Introducing The Adoption Continuum02:15 – 04:40 Recap of Part 1 + Tony's return04:41 – 07:00 The Multi-Ethnic Placement Act (MEPA) explained07:03 – 09:24 Why there's a shortage of Black families adopting Black children09:25 – 11:47 Training gaps and bias in interracial adoption11:48 – 14:10 Helping white parents prepare to raise children of color14:11 – 16:31 Confronting racism inside extended families16:32 – 19:00 “Transracial” vs. “Interracial” — Why language matters19:01 – 21:25 Same-sex parents and child well-being research21:26 – 23:47 Dr. Hynes's PhD study on connectedness and community23:48 – 26:08 Religion and colorblind messages in adoptive homes26:09 – 28:33 Talking about race protects relationships long-term28:34 – 30:55 Keeping teens close through repetition and modeling30:56 – 33:19 Redefining openness beyond visits33:20 – 35:42 How to normalize birth family conversations35:43 – 37:23 Reunion, search, and the right to know one's story37:24 – 39:40 Top lessons for adoptive parents (+ grace and curiosity)39:41 – 42:00 Rapid fire: Organizations and influences in adoption42:00 – 43:25 Final insight — Adoptees can experience trauma after adoption43:26 – End Rebecca's closing reflection & review reminderTune in to The Adoption Roadmap Podcast every Wednesday. Hi Neighbor, Today marks not only our 200th episode, but also the third anniversary of this podcast. What started as a simple idea and a backyard walk has now grown into a global community of adoptive parents seeking encouragement, connection, and biblical hope. In this milestone episode, I'll take you back to where it all began. I'm recording from my outdoor “studio,” the same backyard path where I first began sharing adoption content three years ago. I reflect on the origin of the podcast, the evolution of its name, and the heart behind every episode: letting adoptive parents know they're not alone in the hard work of parenting. You'll also get a sneak peek at what's ahead for the podcast and community. Coming attractions include:

To be honest it's such a critical topic we cartwheel around it.  Rebecca wrote the following: "I am a doctoral researcher at Birmingham City University. My research looks at post adoption social work with families with a child with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of FASD (Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) from the perspectives of social workers, parent carers and children. I am seeking participants who are social workers in the field of post adoption social work and have experience of working with children with a confirmed of suspected diagnosis of FASD to complete the this questionnaire here."     As always if you've experience of adoption, fostering or special guardianship from any perspective personal or professional and would like share that on the podcast please get in touch through the Facebook page, BlueSky or email us at AandFpodcast@gmail.com   Listen/subscribe on iTunes here Spotify here

My fraaaands! Do you get lonely in college? Maybe you're fine in everyday life, until a big issue comes up and you need support or just someone to talk to! I know how that feels! You see people posting videos of their #friendshipgoals and their friend group, and you LONG for the same. You probs want a Christian friend group, but in the past maybe they've been the most petty and judgmental of friends. Ain't nobody got time for that! This is the exact opposite of what Christians should be like! I have some steps today on how to find a legit friend group, and an anchor of community in your life! Might be a bit different than you're expecting, though. When I say friend group, this includes other people, but also with yourself and God, so we'll include all 3! Sooooo, college is lonely. Finding support in school is a challenge. But one of the greatest things I had is a weekly group of godly peers who had devotions together, shared our hearts, and just laughed and ate food! Want to look for the same? My friend Time shares some encouragement on how to find these anchors of community in life. It is so tough doing things the world‘s way, when everybody else is doing life without God and in their own strength, making poor choices, and taking out loans. So, if you're ready to stop dreading making decisions, and find EASY solutions to help you pay for college while following His path for your life, this podcast is for you!   Hey there! I'm Kara Walker, a twenty-something entrepreneur, amateur snowboarder, recovering over-achiever, and debt-free college graduate. In college, I too was a stressed college student, looking for money and mental peace. I wondered if there were other ways to pay for college besides loans, and wished for clear direction on how to make college and career decisions! Not only was I worried about drowning in debt, but also afraid I hadn't heard Jesus correctly. Was I studying the wrong thing? Was I completely off track?   I felt semi-out of control and was spiraling, until I learned how to hear from God and follow His direction. He guided me and gave me the stepping stones to pay for college.  Scholarships, grants, testing out of classes, and other weird school hacks got me through debt-free!   And, I'm here to teach you HOW to do this, too.   If you are ready to find answers about your future, have an intimate and fruitful relationship with Jesus, and have enough money to KILL it at college, this pod is for you! The adoption process is a lifelong process, it doesn't end the day a child is adopted by a family. This is an important point that is all too often missed. Especially in unique cases where a child is placed into split custody with their biological family and interracial and LGBTQ headed family. Our guest on today's episode lived this reality, and found many of the struggles he went through were not understood or acknowledged. Tony Hynes, author of The Son With Two Moms, and training specialist at The Center for Adoption Support and Education, also known as C.A.S.E, joins us to share his story of growing up with two white moms as a Black child, while being in split custody with his biological family. Tony's mission is to spread awareness around adoption to change people's perceptions regarding adoption, and to shed light on the unique unseen issues that arise throughout an adoptee's lifespan. Issues such as interracial adoption situations, as well as being adopted by LGBTQ parents and split adoption with biological families. In this episode, you will hear Tony's journey growing up in an interracial and queer headed household as well as the type of counselling C.A.S.E. offers and the impact they've had on families.Connect with Tony:WebsiteInstagramConnect with Jamie at Truman Charities:FacebookInstagramLinkedInWebsiteYouTubeEmail: info@trumancharities.comThis episode was post produced by Podcast Boutique https://podcastboutique.com/
