"The problem with introducing sex into stages one or two is that we still view others as tools for pleasure. The purpose of Christian marriage is to provide a guide and framework for sex to occur appropriately. Marriage, in the Church's eyes, ensures that sex is a mutual expression of self-sacrifice that culminates in the creation of children. Throughout this series, we will explore how the Christian paradigm of marriage really does lead to the healthiest and most fulfilling expressions of sexuality." We all want to belong. That desire can increase during the menopause transition, when having a community to share experiences with helps us feel less alone. But making those connections isn't always easy, especially when culture doesn't include you. We dive into that, as well as how women of different races experience menopause. Today we’re talking about the grief that we face when having to say goodbye to the unconditional love of a pet.   If you’re an animal lover, you know that rarely do our beloved pets live as long we do. And at some point, we may come face to face with the tough decision of when to let them go and free them of their pain and suffering. Our pets are a special part of our family and such a big part of our lives, which makes this one of the most difficult and painful experiences that we can go through.   Those decisions that we end up having to make at the end of an animal's life are grueling, and it's never easy to say goodbye. But, having just recently lost our dear dog, Wikky, I can wholeheartedly say that to have those final moments be spent at home and with family by his side made this time as beautiful as a painful experience could possibly be.   Today, I’m joined by Elizbeth Allen, who is an author, poet, animal lover, educator on end-of-life care for animals and their people, a vibrational cellular therapist specializing in grief relief, and a licensed spiritual counselor. She joins me today to discuss end-of-life planning for our animal companions, the advantages of choosing in-home euthanasia, and the grieving process that comes with losing a pet.   My daughter, Erin Shaw, also joins me today for the release of our brand new segment on Change It Up Radio called Rut Busters! She will join us each week to share unique challenges to help us bust our winter COVID ruts and get our creativity and energy flowing just in time for spring! Today, Erin shares a simple but powerful challenge for a new way to change it up and shift from autopilot to being more present.   To Learn More About the Show, Visit: www.ChangeItUpRadio.com

Today on SA Voices from the Field we are exploring another brand new NASPA book called: Dismantling Hazing in Greek-Letter Organizations with authors Dr. Jason Meriwether, Dr. Elizabeth Allen and Joshua Brown.    About the Book More than half of college students are hazed in the process of joining student organizations, while 7 out of every 10 students who pledge or rush a fraternity or sorority experience some form of hazing or violence. In recent years, numerous student deaths caused by hazing have called into question the value of these organizations, while college leaders seek solutions that keep students safe. Dismantling Hazing in Greek-Letter Organizations offers practical strategies to address the complexities of hazing culture and the challenges associated with recruitment and initiation in varying contexts. Each chapter focuses on the nuanced elements of hazing within sorority and fraternity subcultures and explores the hidden harms inside these secretive and tradition-laden systems. This engaging publication shares insights into fraternal and sororal systems by examining under-researched elements of hazing and challenging unacceptable practices within those systems. Written by educators in practice who work directly with fraternity and sorority members, national organizations, and campus leaders, the book presents an extensive selection of effective prevention-based practices that all stakeholders—both on and off campus—can use. This text provides readers with new educative models and tools to mitigate the impact of “tradition” as it competes with the value for life within Greek-letter organizations with one ultimate goal: to save the lives of students.   What's Happening Around NASPA Today we shared a number of NASPA events that are being held between now and January. Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2020 20:24

On today's episode we talk a little bit about angels--both the heavenly kind and the earthly kind. I also share a story from my family history which teaches about earthly angels. Are There Angels in the World Today?First, I need to do a shout out to Elizabeth Allen, who shared her wonderful story last week about her son Jesse passing away. She also shared how she learned to see signs of Jesse in her life--that his light would appear in pictures that they were taking, and he was often with them. So we're going to talk about those kinds of angels, friends and people we know and love who come and be with us from the other side. And we're also going to talk about physical angels that come into our lives at the moment we need them the very most. A Favorite Old Testament StoryA couple of years ago I was at a church event, and they invited us to turn to the person next to us and share our favorite story from the Old Testament. And this is the story that I shared. Because it is one of those stories that impressed me so much when I first heard it. Elisha and the SyriansThis story is found in 2 Kings chapter 6. And in this story, we have the prophet Elisha, and and there's a war going on between Israel and Syria. And every time the Syrians go to make a move, it seems like the Israelites are prepared, and they know exactly what the Syrians are doing. Finally, the King of Syria like, What's going on? Who is the spy among us? Basically, who is telling the Israelites about our plans? And one of the people who was advising the king of Syria said it's none of us. Israel has a prophet named Elisha, and he is counseling them what to do. And the King decided he wanted to talk to this prophet guy. Where is he so that I can talk to him? They said, He's in a city called Dothan. And so the Syrians went and surround this city called Dothan in the middle of the night. It says here in 2 Kings 6:14-17 it says, "They came by night and compassed the city about. And when the servant of the man of God was risen early and gone for behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, (so he's talking to Elisha), "Alas, my master! how shall we do?" So at this point, He's like, We're dead. We are surrounded by our enemies. Elisha Sees The Chariots of FireSo Elijah, looking as only a prophet can, looked at the surrounding Syrian army and gave this powerful, powerful response. "And he answered, fear not for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elijah prayed and said, Lord, I pray thee open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha." So often, we, like the servant of Elisha, look at the world around us, and we freak out. There are so many things nowadays that can bring fear into our lives. My message today is "fear not they that be with us are more than they that be with them." Loneliness During the CoronavirusI think one of the most challenging things about the coronavirus and quarantining us to our homes is that it has been a very isolating experience. Perhaps we feel more alone than we have felt our entire lives. We feel alone, forgotten, like nobody cares, and that nobody understands what we're going through. And so my response to you is first, God understands. Second, you're not alone. And I want to drive that home. Because there are horses and chariots and angels round about you. You may not see them, but they are there. And you can call on God, to have those angels be with you to help you "see" and feel the angels that are with you. You may not see them with your physical eyes, but you can see them with spiritual eyes. There are family members and loved ones who are with us in our deepest and hardest moments of trial. I've had too many experiences in my life, to be able to say different. Learning About AngelsI shared several podcasts ago about my...

Elizabeth Allen was stunned when her healthy 16-year-old son died suddenly one day from HCM. She shares wisdom learned along grief's road with God's help. 4 Lessons From LossBioElizabeth Allen is the oldest of 10 children and grew up in California. She met her husband as a student at BYU and they have lived in Utah for almost 30 years now and have eight children. Through her husband, she was introduced to alternative medicine and she has studied the healing arts for over 30 years. Her daughter Glenna was the first to be diagnosed with the hereditary heart condition HCM, which stands for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This led to the diagnosis of her husband and two youngest children, Stephen and Jesse. Baffling SymptomsWhen her kids were young, Elizabeth remembers her kids having stomachaches on a regular basis, and they just seemed to be sick a lot. Some were diagnosed with H. pylori, the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers, but there was something more going on. At one point, Glenna was living with Elizabeth's sister in Connecticut. One morning, they weren't able to wake her up. They called the paramedics and testing began. The doctors were baffled. Her EKG, a type of heart testing, was more indicative of a 90-year-old who had had multiple heart attacks. They even sent her tests to Columbia University to have them looked at. Even they were baffled. Health professionals then performed a stress test where she ran on a treadmill with a heart monitor on. But throughout all the testing, they never performed any imaging tests. Elizabeth had Glenna brought back to Utah and they got an MRI done. Finally, she received a diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The doctors told them that this condition was hereditary and that everyone in the family needed to be tested. What is HCM?Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the muscles of the heart wall thicken. This makes the chambers that hold the blood smaller so that the heart can't pump as much blood. Additionally, the fibers in the muscles tend to be scrambled and stiff so the heart goes into atrial fibrillation, which causes sudden death. HCM is sometimes known as the life snatcher because it's young people like athletes who suddenly drop on the field or court. HCM often goes undiagnosed because here in the United States we don't offer any kind of screening. Because of this, Elizabeth recommends that all parents, and especially parents of athletes know what symptoms to watch out for. Common symptoms of HCM are a kids who tires out quickly and just often doesn't feel well. They are generally low energy. Getting an echocardiogram for kids with those symptoms is not very expensive but is an important test to visualize the thickening in the heart. The thickening that they saw in Glenna's heart sent the Allen family to Stanford University to do genetic testing and counseling with a specialist. Their family now knows the specific gene responsible for their HCM. After this testing, they were able to find out that Elizabeth's husband and two other children also have HCM. Some of their other children also carry the gene, though they don't actually have the disease. JesseElizabeth's son Jesse was one of her children with HCM. But he never complained. He had some trouble, but nothing that really stood out to Elizabeth. A few days before the 4th of July, when Jesse was 16, Elizabeth remembers noticing Jesse's hands shaking but not much else. Elizabeth remembers that he had an invincible spirit and really pushed himself. He signed up for things like weightlifting at school, even though he wasn't supposed to. Elizabeth didn't know that, and Jesse's health plan hadn't followed him from middle school over to the high school. Even though Elizabeth was frustrated with him pushing himself so hard, he was the picture of health. One afternoon, Jesse was out in Roosevelt with some friends. He collapsed. His friends didn't know what to do. They did their best and called the...

Today, we’re gabbing with Elizabeth Allen, a safe beauty advocate and toxin-free educator. She is passionate about educating women about safer alternatives for healthier personal care products. The products we choose to use not only affect us. They affect the people around us, our community, and the world. During the holiday season, many of us give and get lotions and potions, so this is a perfect time to look instead to healthier personal care products. Why Healthier Personal Care Products Matter It’s important to remember that our skin is our biggest organ, and what we put on it is absorbed. Studies show that 60% up to 100% of what we put on our skin goes right into the bloodstream, with no filters. What you use in your daily routines matters to your overall health. Europe has banned more than 1,300 harmful chemicals from everyday products. The United States Food and Drug Administration, on the other hand, has only banned 11. That means we need to be very diligent in what we purchase and use in and on our bodies. Unfortunately, our government isn’t always looking out for us. Don’t Be Fooled by Greenwashing Given the minimal regulations on packaging and ingredients in the US skincare industry, companies are likely to claim what will help the product sell—regardless of the truth behind it. The packaging may highlight “good ingredients” and not mention the harmful additives. In fact, they may even lure you in with pictures of flowers or natural surroundings. As a smart consumer with an eye on healthy ingredients, you need to review the ingredients yourself. Ingredients to Avoid in Healthier Personal Care Products How can you know which ingredients are good and which are bad? Elizabeth has a rule of thumb, and she consistently avoids three specifics products. They are: Fragrance Elizabeth refers to fragrance as the f-word for good reason. Did you know there can be up to 3,000 different chemicals hidden behind that fragrance? Companies don’t have to list them because they are protected as trade secrets. Unless the product specifically states that it uses essential oils, it’s a smart idea to avoid anything that’s blanketed as fragrance. Phenoxyethanol It is often suggested to avoid ingredients you can’t pronounce, and one of those is phenoxyethanol. This is a preservative that is commonly used in brands that are marketed as natural and safe. The truth is that it can cause allergic reactions, eczema, and hives. When ingested, it can lead to central nervous system damage, diarrhea, and vomiting. You’ll find it in many bubble bath brands targeted to kids. Talc Commonly used in cosmetics from baby powder and eyeshadow to feminine hygiene products, talc is a lung irritant and has been linked to organ system toxicity. How can we find gratitude in the midst of challenges and suffering? How does gratitude for our struggles change us? Elizabeth Allen is a Certified Body Talk Practitioner who shares how the holistic therapy of "Body Talk" connects the body to it's own healing power. She gets vulnerable about abuse, grief, and suffering in her own life. Elizabeth gained a profound understanding of grief when her 16 yr old son Jesse died suddenly from a hereditary heart condition. Her son's death inspired Elizabeth to write a book "Heart So Big" to help educate parents, healthcare providers, and schools about HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). Listen as Elizabeth describes how you can advocate for your child and protect your family through educating schools, teams, and individuals about the risks of HCM. Elizabeth explains how the Body Talk system helped her through her grief. She is inspired by the belief that her son is directing her mission to educate, heal, and save lives. Elizabeth expresses gratitude for her experience and how it has helped gain the education and compassion to help others.
