Marshall Crenshaw's 40 plus year career has included ten studio albums, a US top 40 hit in 1982 with “Someday, Someway,” some collaborations, and some movie appearances. Crenshaw recently regained the rights to several albums he released originally on the Razor & Tie label. We talked to him in 2020 for the first in that series, Miracle of Science. Now comes the reissue of #447. The eleven song album is arguably one of his most adventurous, and is augmented by two newly recorded tracks issued on his own Shiny Tone label. He talks about his struggles with major labels and how being on a smaller one gave him the freedom to do the things he really wanted to do. He also gives us a preview of Deluxe Editions of his first two albums, coming later in the fall.
Mike Ragogna admits he would never have had a music career had it not been for David Cassidy. A young obsession with The Partridge Family and especially the music, led to him pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter working with producers Terry Cashman and Tommy West. A number of their songs appear on The Partridge Family catalogue. Born in New York, Mike's impressive and varied resume includes working for record labels EMI, Universal, BMG and Razor & Tie producing compilations and reissues for hundreds of artists. As compilations producer at Razor & Tie who reissued The Partridge Family albums on CD, he assembled a David Cassidy collection of his RCA material in 1996, and takes us through the process. He explains: The music publishing concept Examines the prejudice behind David's desire to be accepted as a serious musician Makes a passionate plea explaining the importance of why David's unreleased back catalogue must be put out in a deluxe boxset Why he considers Sound Magazine one of the greatest pop albums of all time Offers an analysis of David's RCA albums The Higher They Climb, Home Is Where The Heart Is, Gettin' It In The Street The genius of lyricist Tony Romeo Recalls his career as a recording artist with The Almost Brothers Relives the first time he heard How Can I Be Sure With great humour, recollects a moment, not knowing how to break the ice when meeting David Cassidy and Donny Osmond in a bathroom Mike's original songs have featured in various projects including The Roar soundtrack and a Spider-Man release. He has acted in productions of Hair, South Pacific, Annie and Big River. He featured in a Bruce Springsteen tribute, performed as Bobby Darin in a movie music retrospective, co-produced and added background vocals to the Midwest indie group Control's debut CD. More details of how David inspired Mike's career can be found in my book, Cherish David Cassidy A Legacy of Love, available on Amazon and bookshops in store or online.
The Golden Globe and Grammy nominee whose self-titled debut release was named one of the 100 Best Albums of the Eighties by Rolling Stone joins us to chat about his wide-ranging career, from self-penned hits as an artist such as “Someday Someway,” to co-writing the Top 10 hit "Til I Hear it from You" with the Gin Blossoms, to writing the theme for the parody film Walk Hard. PART ONE Scott and Paul pay tribute to “Day-O” writer and former Songcraft guest Irving Burgie, who recently passed away at the age of 95; reflect on other Songcraft guests who are no longer with us; talk about the importance of Patreon in preserving the important stories of songwriters; and announce two winners of the Marty Stuart book contest. PART TWO - 6:46 mark The guys dig deep on why nobody knows the name of lead guitar players anymore PART THREE - 14:36 mark Paul and Scott get on the phone with Marshall Crenshaw, who discusses his eclectic range of musical interests that have led him to dig in the Capitol Records vaults for forgotten 1950s country recordings AND to tour as a guest guitarist with MC5; why he got sick of the Beatles for a while; how the simple act of flipping over a cassette tape altered the course of his career; how he wrote one his best known songs in 15 minutes; the only one of his albums he didn't want to make; how he managed not to meet one of the co-writers of his biggest hits until after the song was on the radio; the reason he asked his record label to drop him; whose version of "You're My Favorite Waste of Time" is his favorite; what it's like listening to Phil Spector records on acid; and why he's reissuing his three underrated Razor & Tie albums, even though he's vowed to never release another new album again. ABOUT MARSHALL CRENSHAW Detroit native Marshall Crenshaw’s debut self-titled album spawned the Top 40 pop hit “Someday Someway” and was named one of the Best Albums of the Eighties by Rolling Stone magazine. Establishing him as a critical darling, Crenshaw went on to release a series of eclectic studio albums that spawned classic songs such as “Whenever You’re on My Mind,” “Better Back Off,” and “You’re My Favorite Waste of Time.” The latter went on to be covered by Bette Middler, Ronnie Spector, the duo of Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs, and Owen Paul, who had a Top 5 hit with it in the UK. Crenshaw carved out a special relationship with Hollywood, appearing with his band in the Francis Ford Coppola film Peggy Sue Got Married, portraying Buddy Holly in the Richie Valens biopic La Bamba, and writing a book called Hollywood Rock: A Guide to Rock ‘n’ Roll in the Movies. Additionally, he penned the title track for the John C. Reilly comedy film Walk Hard, which earned Crenshaw Golden Globe and Grammy nominations. A highly respected writer, Marshall’s songs have been covered by Kelly Willis, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Freedy Johnston, Robert Gordon, Marti Jones, and the Gin Blossoms, with whom he co-wrote the Top 10 single “Til I Hear It From You.” Ronnie Spector recorded an entire five-song EP of material from the Marshall Crenshaw catalog, and his work has earned him induction into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.

By the year 2001, Razor & Tie had already found widespread success as a producer of reissues and compilation albums, but in the latter half of the year the independent music publisher struck pre-teen gold. The first ever Kidz Bop album saw release, which featured hyper-sanitized, family-friendly versions of pop songs, as sung by a chorus of children just barely into double-digits. The brand has since gone on to be one of the highest selling series of kids albums of all time, spawned innumerable spin-offs and tie-ins, and has become the bane of parents everywhere, endlessly irked by Kidz Bop's inferior takes on already overexposed songs. Now in September, with the kids back in school, the goodboix at Jukebox Zeroes are finally going to get to the bottom of things. On this episode, special guest Puck Vickery of Twitch stream GGPuck and of improv group SimProv joins Lee & Patrick in listening and reacting to a slew of Kidz Bop tracks, and trying to figure out what the heck all the hubbub surrounding this compilation clearly not made for them is about. This Month's Local Artist Feature: "My Favourite Friend" by Butterscott

Live at the Safari Club: A People’s History of HarDCore is the uncensored oral history of a notorious underground punk venue in the nation’s capital, told by the very bands, fans, zinesters, promoters, graffiti artists, scenesters, senators’ kids and activists who made it happen. From 1988 to 1997, the Safari Club was Washington, DC’s version of New York’s iconic CBGBs. An Ethiopian restaurant by day turned-Go-Go club-on-Saturday nights, this windowless dive deep in the heart of the city then known as the “murder capital of the world” transformed into an all-ages venue every Sunday afternoon. New York bands Sick of it All, Murphy’s Law, Bold, Earth Crisis and Gorilla Biscuits played their first DC shows on the Safari’s tiny mirrored stage. Southern California’s Chain of Strength, Insted, and Strife all breezed through at least once, while local legends Ignition, Kingface, Swiz, Battery, Damnation A.D. and Government Issue screamed for change. Live at the Safari Club allows the scene to tell its own tales—the broken arms, bruised egos, back-stabbings, riots, rip-offs, fights, lifelong friendships and love stories revolving around the music. Shawna Kenney authored the award-winning memoir I Was a Teenage Dominatrix(Last Gasp), edited the anthology Book Lovers (Seal Press) and co-wroteImposters (Mark Batty Publishers). She contributed to the book 9:30: A Time and Place as well as Spoke: Images and Stories from the 1980s Washington, DC Punk Scene (Akashic Books). Her freelance work has appeared in The New York Times, Ms., Bust, Vice, Narratively, Alternative Press, Creative Nonfiction, and more. Rich Dolinger has played in bands and has been involved in the hardcore scene since the late 80s. He’s dabbled in photography, music journalism, graphic design and film editing. His photography and articles have appeared in Spin Magazine, AP, Highwire Daze and While You Were Sleeping. He owns the Los Angeles-based contracting company Straight Edge Tile. Photo by Kym Ghee For well over three decades now, Mike Gitter has been responsible for hurting your ears. When xXx¨Fanzine released its twentieth and final issue in 1988, he focused on a career in music journalism as a contributing editor to Rip and Tower Records Pulse while freelancing for the likes of Thrasher, Kerrang!, Spin and Rolling Stone (amongst others). A move to New York City in 1989 eventually found him transitioning into the A&R departments of various record labels including Atlantic, Roadrunner, Century Media and Razor & Tie. Some of his more notable signings include Jawbox and Bad Religion for Atlantic, Killswitch Engage and Megadeth for Roadrunner; HIM and Chiodos for Razor & Tie as well as The Shrine and Ignite at Century Media. He’s also worked in music merchandising and artist management. Mike currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA Event date: Tuesday, September 5, 2017 - 7:30pm
