You may know William Atherton from Day Of The Locust, The Hindenburg, Looking For Mr. Goodbar, and Real Genius or you may better remember him for vigorously questioning the environmental safety of ghost busting or for receiving a blow to the face which rings in a very Merry Christmas in Die Hard. Bill began his career on the stage, performing in Broadway plays by David Rabe, John Guare and Arthur Miller. The Ghostbuster and Die Hard franchises brought him to Hollywood and he joins us to discuss his fascinating history, his heroes and influences and his range of experiences with such performers as Anne Bancroft, George C. Scott, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, and Diane Keaton. Did you know that Bill sings What'll I Do in Nelson Riddle's Great Gatsby score!? He tells us all about it and talks about recognizing the greatness of Stephen Spielberg even as a baby director when Bill stared in Sugarland Express. He remembers how Anne Bancroft would not stop talking about Mel Brooks on the set of The Hindenburg, he shares what he learned from the casts of Lost and Desperate Housewives and he addresses the internet's most time-honored question, is Die Hard a Christmas movie?Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Will & Harper and Nobody Wants This on Netflix.Path Points of Interest:William AthertonWilliam Atherton on WikiWilliam Atherton on IMDBGift of DemocracyMedia Path PodcastNobody Wants This on NetflixWill and Harper - Netflix

Love & War WAS a show. It's basically what happens when Diane English, the legendary creator of Murphy Brown, makes a sitcom in the 80s rom-com style of movies like When Harry Met Sally. Love & War is about rough around the edges New York City newspaper columnist Jack Stein (Jay Thomas) and his attempts at romance—first in an on-again off-again relationship with restaurateur Wally Porter (Susan Dey), and then after a second season retooling, in a will-they or won't-they with chef Dana Palladino (Annie Potts). Brynn, Aaron and Barry head on down to The Blue Shamrock (that's the dive bar / fancy restaurant where it takes place!) to break the fourth wall (which they initially do but then stop doing!) to speak right to you, the audience, about why this show got sent back to the kitchen. Bruce Kimmel is probably the most popular returning guest on The Partridge Family television series. He made an immediate impact with the viewers and struck an instant chemistry with David Cassidy, Shirley Jones and Susan Dey. In this special episode, Bruce recalls how the cast made him feel like one of the family, his friendship with David and speaks movingly about the man he knew. Bruce is a renowned film and stage director, author, composer, actor, songwriter and a Grammy-nominated music producer. He has one of the longest-running daily blogs which celebrates 20 years this November. He wrote and directed The First Nudie Musical, has produced solo albums for Helen Reddy, Petula Clark and worked with Lauren Bacall, and Dorothy Loudon who starred alongside David in his first short lived Broadway show, The Fig Leaves Are Falling in 1969. Bruce has produced and hosted a monthly cabaret series, Kritzerland, for more than a decade which he moved online during the past year winning critical acclaim. He reflects today on his influences as a boy, early auditions, why he always has to be creative, his approach to directing, and admits he has never had a holiday in 35 years. He opens up about his depression and the epiphany which pulled him back from the brink. When we caught up, Bruce had just finished the first night of Motel 66, a collection of one-act plays, one of which he had directed, all set in motel courtyards along the historic Route 66. This week Val and Rachel and Special (returning!) Guest Emily Wade discuss the pilot episode and second season premiere of Love & War, which is an American sitcom television series which aired on CBS from September 21, 1992 to February 1, 1995. Created by Diane English, the series originally starred Susan Dey as Wally Porter, a New York City restaurateur, and Jay Thomas as Jack Stein, a newspaper columnist with whom she had an on-again, off-again romance. After the first season, however, the show was retooled and Dey was fired by the producers of the show, saying that she and Thomas had "no chemistry" together. She was replaced by Annie Potts as Dana Palladino, who bought Porter's restaurant and also became a love interest for Jack. The first season also featured moments when Jack or Wally would break the fourth wall and address the camera directly, generally using it as an opportunity to discuss an emotional crisis. This technique was dropped in later seasons. Hot topics include: 1.) How CBS ruined Emily's childhood 2.) Why this show was so weird 3.) RIP Hunky Teddy Bear Jay Thomas 4.) Murphy Brown comparisons 5.) 3 redheads is too many for one show (Annie Potts has redhead energy) 6.) TV used to be theater, now it's the internet 7.) Emily's Korean sitcom obsession 8.) Accent Corner, What Ya Watching, and MAD Magazine 9.) Rachel and Val discuss Ted Lasso and Nomadland, but save Mare of Easttown talk for next week 10.) #vanlife Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_%26_War_(TV_series)

Compiled with a story in mind, LOOKER is a three-part dystopian musical... that you can dance to. Inspired by campy 80's electro, the production of "Future St." at DTLA's The Broad, and the neo-sci-fi cult film LOOKER (starring Susan Dey), it's a mix I've (very) slowly been compiling for about three years; collecting odd tracks here and there, putting them in a folder, waiting for the right time to sort through it all. It wasn't until Kotelett and Zadak released "Solaya" that I felt I finally had all the pieces of the puzzle to tell a comprehensive story. By the time it came to assembling it, I actually had about 120 tracks in the folder, from which these 37 tracks stood out to best achieve the narrative in mind. LOOKER is a love letter to the magical kind of loneliness that comes with, specifically, city living ("Melancholy Replicant"), the pitfalls of striving for physical perfection and feeling you have to pretend your life is perfect to the outside world ("Looker"), and the subsequent losing of oneself as you succumb to the detachment that these and other modern issues bring ("Diamond Veins"). But, like most of my mixes, it has a triumphant ending that comes with being a survivor.... which, at about three hours running time, anyone who gets through the mix can call themselves. :-D SEQUENCE 1: FUTURE ST. We pay tribute to bubblegum's greatest of them all with songs spanning all of David Cassidy's career, from his very first recording to his very last performance! Duets with Shaun Cassidy, Shirley Jones, and (almost) Susan Dey! The secret origins of The Partridge Family! The surprise appearance of The Partridge Family at Kid Bubblegum's triumphant concert, Jingle Jangle in the Jungle! And, in a touching tribute from Kid Bubblegum to his idol, he ends the show with a Partridge Family song, the program's absolute favorite Partridge Family song, and yet we've never played it before. Until now.
This week on StoryWeb: The Partridge Family’s song “I Think I Love You.” Fifth grade – and the song I can’t get out of my head is “I Think I Love You.” Every girl at Griffith Elementary School – make it every girl at schools around the United States – feels the same way. How we swooned over David Cassidy, the teen idol who played a made-for-TV band’s lead singer. The fictional band was The Partridge Family, based loosely on the real-life Cowsills, a family pop band popular in the late ’60s. The TV show debuted in fall 1970, just a month after “I Think I Love You” had been released as a single. The show featured Shirley Jones as a widowed mother of five children, who scheme to put together a band as a way of helping the family financially. Amazingly enough, this unknown family band has its debut at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas! Jones’s real-life stepson, David Cassidy, played Keith, the oldest of Shirley Partridge’s children. Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, and two younger children rounded out the family cast. Like many girls my age, I tuned in every Friday night to The Partridge Family. In fact, it was the first show my family watched when we got our first color TV. We were watching Shirley Partridge and her kids, when the camera zoomed in for a very tight close-up of Shirley Jones’s face, complete with bright orange – nearly neon orange – lipstick. What a thing to see on a color set! My younger brother exclaimed, “Look at them lips!” And with that the TV sparked and went dead. No more Partridge Family. We have laughed ever since about those technicolor lips of Shirley Jones. Although the actors “performed” songs as part of the show, most of them were actually lip-syncing. The only actors who performed in the band were David Cassidy, as lead singer, and Shirley Jones, who sang backup. So the 45s and albums that my friends and I purchased with our allowance money didn’t actually feature Susan Dey and Danny Bonaduce, but instead were the product of an anonymous studio band. This made no difference to us – for it was David Cassidy we wanted, and he was there front and center. Though fifth-grade girls could not have known – yet – that pressing, anxious, heart-stopping feeling you get when you are falling in love but haven’t yet “confessed” that love, we nevertheless gladly sang along. Of course, like every school girl, I dreamed that Keith/David was singing that song to me. That was the magic of the song: this cute, cute heartthrob seemed to be confessing his love to me – and I loved him right back. Unbelievably, “I Think I Love You” – a song by a fictitious band – hit #1 on the Billboard charts. Since 1970, there have been many cover versions, including those by Andy Williams, Perry Como, Paul Westerberg, and David’s daughter Katie Cassidy. David Cassidy himself recorded an updated solo version in 2003. To go behind the scenes with the Partridge Family, check out Shirley Jones’s 2014 memoir or one of David Cassidy’s two books: C’mon, Get Happy: Fear and Loathing on the Partridge Family Bus and Could It Be Forever? My Story. You might want to visit David Cassidy’s official website. To get the original version of “I Think I Love You,” you can buy the group’s first album, simply titled The Partridge Family Album. The complete TV series is available on DVD. Visit thestoryweb.com/partridge for links to all these resources and to see The Partridge Family perform “I Think I Love You” as part of the episode titled “My Son, the Feminist.” I’m under no illusion that The Partridge Family was great television or that the music released under their moniker was any good. But I can say that I still know every single word to “I Think I Love You” and that I am willing to belt it out if ever I am asked. My fifth-grade self would be proud.
