Jess McCaul - a blogger from Longford in Ireland - suffered from anorexia for eleven years. After doctors diagnosed her with osteoporosis and osteopenia at just twenty-six years of age, Jess decided that enough was enough. It was from this point that she began her fight against the eating disorder, determined to not let it win. Jess speaks about her low points throughout the years of the eating disorder and how it took away so much of her young life; not being able to go for a coffee with friends, not going to events or parties and spending a lot of time at home trying to stay warm and being consumed by her mental illness. After working with her GP for some time, Jess explains how she felt like she had no choice but to fight for the funding for the inpatient treatment that she knew she needed in Saint John of God's Psychiatric Hospital in Dublin. She reveals that she didn't have the strength to recover with outpatient treatment alone and if she didn't get the care she needed, illness could've potentially killed her. After two years, Jess was finally granted the funding she needed for her 14 weeks at the psychiatric hospital that she says saved her life. It's been a full 12 months since she was discharged and despite the 2020 pandemic, she is still feeling positive about her ever-changing road to recovery and is on a mission to spread awareness around mental illnesses. Welcome back to episode 14 of The Wall Podcast! Thank you for continuing to listen and if you're new here; welcome. On this one, I got to spend a few hours with Dr. Vanessa Creaven co-founder of Spotlight Oral Care which is an Irish oral care company that made its name after their Spotlight Teeth Whitening Kit took the Irish cosmetic market by storm. Vanessa and her sister, Lisa Creaven, are both dentists from Galway in Ireland. They've truly found an untouched area of the global oral care market and have developed a collection of clean, non-toxic, environmentally friendly products that make us look good on the outside, but are also good to our teeth and gums too. in this podcast, Vanessa takes us back in time to the launch of their well-known teeth whitening kit, which became a social media sensation. This product started out as something they wanted to offer their patients, but the demand began to snowball, more and more retailers have requested their product. Fast forward three years later and Vanessa - still only twenty-eight years old - announced that she and Lisa just signed with 1,000 Ulta stores across America. A coveted move for any cosmetic company and a true pinch-me moment for a brand that has come from Galway. This is not only an intriguing success story from two very smart sisters, but Vanessa also shines a light on some truth about popular oral care products on the market and the harsh reality of what many consumers are putting in their mouths. It was a real eye-opener for me! The story of Spotlight Oral Care is the epitome of what this podcast means to me; true success that stemmed from pure resilience and passion. It's finally here, Season 2 of The Wall Podcast! Thank you for all who have listened through Season 1. I'm excited to say that I am just getting started! To kick off the new season, and the very first episode of 2020, I have an interview with Irish influencer, Shauna Doyle. Shauna is a fast-growing blogger from Cork and is best known for her chats on Instagram stories and her blusher. Yep, Shauna's rule is that you can never have too much blush on your cheeks! Shauna started out in retail, moving up the ranks fast in some of the bigger outlets until she landed a job as a makeup artist in MAC makeup. School was never for her so Shauna thought she was destined for a career in makeup and retail. Until her follower numbers started to grow rapidly. Despite her current following being at a ‘micro-level' by industry standards, Shauna has been able to sustain a living out of full-time blogging from her hometown of Cork while studying a master's in PR too. Shauna, who by the way is only twenty-two years old, sat down with me in NYC to chat about her journey so far. She was traveling to promote the latest fashion app called Alana, so you could say things are escalating pretty fast for her. Shauna is a great example of how, if you're brave enough to ask and you're willing to put in the work, that sometimes the answer is simply 'yes'. You can join Shauna on Instagram (@shaunadoyle.x) and YouTube, and don't forget to check out the new Alana app (@alana.app) too! Shane Finn is an Irish entrepreneur, motivational speaker and endurance athlete. I met Shane when he finished his American Ultra trip from The Golden Gate Bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge. Shane traveled, by running and cycling, over 5,000kms which took him 36 days - no rest days in between! The goal? To raise enough money for Spina Bifida Ireland to change the lives of those living with the condition and their families. The motivation? You'll have to listen to this episode to find out. I was eager to get chatting to Shane. As an endurance athlete, what he does is all about the mind and I was so eager to hear, as a twenty-six-year-old man from Dingle in Co.Kerry, how he had learned so young to control his mind in such a way that allowed him to do extraordinary things. Was it that he was built to be an endurance athlete or does he believe that you or I can do what he does too? I had to find out. In this podcast episode, I dug deep into what kept Shane going during the month and a half he traveled across America. What was running through his mind and how does he deal with it. Though running and cycling 5,000km's might not be everyone's cup of tea, the principle behind his work is something we can all learn from. *I mistakenly said in this episode that I haven't drank alcohol in twenty years. It's only been seven - oops!* --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/stephanie-oquigley/support
Have you ever wondered what its like to live in Manhattan? Moving to New York is an extremely unique experience and arguably unique when compared to moving to any other country in the world. Some would say New York is the hardest city to live in too. On this episode of The Wall, Eva Murphy Ryan, a fellow Irish in New York and a good friend of mine, came to chat about all of the hurdles we went through moving to the Big Apple. We're talking real-life stuff: credit scores, finding a job, securing an apartment and how to make new friends. Eva and I both share our experiences and advice in a effort to share our learnings and help fellow Irish (and beyond) crack the concrete jungle. On the first episode of The Wall Podcast, I got to sat down with bestselling author, Caroline Foran. Her book, Owning It: Your Bullsh*t-Free Guide to Living with Anxiety, was number 1 on the Irish book charts for sixteen consecutive weeks. Caroline recently launched both her books in the US, and while here in New York, came to share her journey with anxiety on The Wall. In this episode you will hear all about how Caroline identified her own anxiety patterns and how she overcame them - a true wall broken down. Caroline reflects on anxiety in her childhood, how anxiety separated her during her teenage years and how she has achieved being comfortable with vulnerability and how you can too Enjoy at let me know what you think of this episode on Instagram @StephanieOQuigley, --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/stephanie-oquigley/support
