My wonderful friend Caroline Foran is my guest this week, and a returning guest to Everymum the podcast. This time, we talk about her most recent struggles with her son Caelan, and how she has recently undergone assessments with various clinical assessors to help better understand her son's unique needs. We talk about the anxiety over a potential future diagnosis, how guilt can be associated with wanting a straightforward life for your child, and how she cries every night at bed time out of sheer frustration at how challenging her days have become. She talks with such bravery and candour, but also with empathy and a genuine sense of gratitude. This chat might be of particular help to anyone starting or in the middle of an assessment process, or anyone who feels the frustrations and guilt associated with parenting. I hope you enjoy! Is delayed gratification one of the overlooked secrets to reducing anxiety? Is immediacy culture and present bias fuelling our basal level of daily anxiety? That background hum or fizziness we have grown so used to living with? This week on episode of Owning It, with me Caroline Foran, I'm joined once again by Dr Padraig Walsh, behavioural psychologist, and founder of Actualise.ie, as we look to answer these more profound questions about our behaviours in relation to our experience of anxiety. It's in our nature to seek the path of least resistance but overall, but if we can't learn to sit with boredom or discomfort or hold off on doing something that will numb the discomfort, do we contribute more to anxiety? And if that's true, how can we go about working on delayed gratifaction and willpower with the goal of helping our anxiety overall? The question of family expansion is one everybody has an opinion on. This week on the pod I have author Caroline Foran on. She talks about how she discovered she had anxiety. Caroline suffered with her panic attacks, her stomach , and didn't understand emotions. In her 20's she was striving in her career but was pushing herself too much without realising this. Then she stopped and started to listen to her body, trust her gut and tap into her feelings and become more self aware. Caroline thought she was not going to be able to cope with anxiety that she had to leave her job and start to understand herself, own it and accept it. That is when someone approached her to write about her experience and it became a book ' Owning it'. This is still a new world to all of us the last few years where we can own our truth and talk openly about it and how powerful you can feel from doing this. In this week's episode, we're talking about matrescence. That's the word used to describe the physical, emotional, hormonal and social transition to becoming a mother. Everyone understands that adolescence is an awkward phase, but during matrescence mothers are expected to be deliriously happy, while simultaneously losing control over the way they look and feel. With Mother's Day this weekend, we thought it would be the perfect time to find out more about this transformative time in many women's lives. Layla O'Mara, a post partum doula, acupuncturist and mum of three, and Caroline Foran, the author of 3 bestselling books on the topics of anxiety, confidence and vulnerability, talk to Róisín about what the matrescence is and why it deserves more attention.Produced by Jennifer Ryan and Suzanne Brennanwww.irishtimes.com/podcasts See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Every now & again an episode comes along that feels a bit like a "coming out." This episode is certainly one of those episodes. For the first time ever, I'll be talking about my experience with anxiety. It's something that I've dealt with for nearly as long as I've been gay, but it never quite made it out of the closet when I did. I'm joined by Caroline Foran, my rock throughout this interview, & together we tell our stories, while also examining the universally shared experience of anxiety & the many common stigmas & misconceptions around it. I think our chat is a good starting point for anyone who might be dealing with anxiety in secrecy & shame like I was. If you feel compelled to learn more afterward, I highly recommend checking out Caroline's body of work - it is a treasure trove of information on the topic. If you're anything like me, sometimes just a little information can make a big thing feel not so big anymore. Or as Carrie Underwood says, "Sometimes that mountain you've been climbing is just a grain of sand."Hosted by Brian Falduto (he/they), Featuring Caroline Foran (she/her), Music by Conor Keelan (he/him), Produced by Tyler Martin (he/him). You can also hear the audio from this interview on Caroline's podcast, "Owning It."

To mark World Mental Health Day we have gathered together some of the most enlightening and heartfelt moments of honesty on the subject of mental wellness. To start off Jarlath has the tables turned on him as Jen Trzeciak of Jigsaw.ie asks the questions. For the first time Jarlath opens up about his own mental health journey and challenges he finds toughest as a parent trying to guide his son through life and the pandemic. Jarlath and Jen talk about the incredible work that Jigsaw does, then in the second half of the show we hear from Bob Geldof, Blindboy Boatclub, Marian Keyes, Jason McAteer, Caroline Foran and Richie Sadlier. As the e-Mental Health Manager Jen Trzeciak is responsible for and central to the work Jigsaw does to help young people in Ireland. In a first for the series, Jarlath opens up about his own mental health struggles and Jen gives some priceless advice to parents looking to protect the mental health of their children. In the second half Bob Geldof speaks about letting the light back in after experiencing loss, Marian Keyes gives her thoughts on the most common misconceptions about mental health and Blindboy Boatclub opens up about his own mental health difficulties. Caroline Foran also explains how she discovered that mental health issues can become embedded in childhood while Jason McAteer opens up about reaching his breaking point while Richie Sadlier discusses the devastating impact for him when his career came to an end. This is a truly invaluable collection of conversations for a particularly special occasion, enjoy. Covid19 has undoubtedly impacted the mental health of our young people, the increasing demand for our services is not a Covid specific phenomena. Demand in 2019 was 22% up on the same period in 2018. Demand in 2020 was 25% higher again (25% increase on 2019). There has also been an over 400% increase of traffic to its e-mental health platform over the last six months, a surge in demand for its schools supports and a month-on-month increase to calls to 1800 JIGSAW support line. It is clear that young people need support to get them through the coming months. What we are hearing from those who have been using our services and supports over the last six months is a real cause for concern. Isolation, uncertainty and fear are leaving many without the core elements we value and need for our mental wellbeing. We have seen a slight shift in the issues that young people are presenting with since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. While anxiety remains the top issue among young people, we have seen an increase in sleep-related issues, family conflict and a marked spike in contacts from parents and teachers seeking support. Young people, parents, guardians or those who work with young people can visit jigsaw.ie to access support or Freephone 1800 JIGSAW (544729), Monday to Friday, 1pm- 5pm. Hello dear listener and welcome to this expert led episode of owning it the anxiety podcast with your host, author Caroline Foran. This time we are delving into our endocrine system. What role do our hormones play when it comes to anxiety? What's the job of our pituitary gland - what even is that - and why is this so important if we want to bring down our anxious symptoms? Long story short, your hormones are EVERYTHING. And we so often overlook them or are completely unaware of how powerful they can be. It's not all in your head, it's all in your hormones. Here internationally renowned endocrinologist Dr Mary Ryan helps us to better understand our hormones, the key players involved with anxiety in particular, and advises us on precisely what our pituitary gland needs in order to function well, which, of course, leads us to feeling less anxious. Born at 27 weeks weighing just 390 grams, Charlotte Keogh is Ireland's smallest surviving premature baby and one strong girl. Here our host Sinead O'Moore talks to her incredible mum Katie Keogh about their resilience, strength, courage and fighting spirit.Katies journey began in 2017 when at her 20 week scan with her first baby Vincent, she learned that he was experiencing restricted growth and he wasn't measuring as expected. It became clear very quickly that Vincent wouldn't survive and at 27 weeks Katie delivered her little boy sleeping in to this world. Hello and welcome to episode 7 of ready to pop with me Caroline Foran. This episode is maybe what we'd consider the big one: we're preparing for labour. We're wondering what the hell we're in store for, what all of the variables could be, how we might prepare. I was definitely a lot more anxious about giving birth before I recorded this episode and a lot more relaxed about it aftewrads. I'm joined here by midwife Aine Hennessey - the loveliest woman who you would be so lucky to have by your side during labour - you may know her on instagram as @midwife_aine and she is my expert for this episode to guide us through our upcoming labour experience. How do home births differ to hospital births? What pain relief is avaiable to us? Will we poop ourselves? What happens before during and after labour? What signs to act upon? What contractions feel like? What's involved in an episiotomy? What not to worry about and so much more. I really hope you find this episode helpful. I certainly did. Hosted on Acast. If history teaches us anything, it’s that the third entry in any franchise often turns out to be a waste of everyone’s time: Spiderman III, The Godfather Part III, Alien 3 and The Dark Knight Rises. But, in keeping with the spirit of the podcast, if Andy had actually learned anything (a tall order as anyone who went to St. Kevins C.B.S. will testify) he wouldn’t have made Be Grand, which returns, gloriously, for its third resit. And there’s no one better to kick things off than best-selling author and broadcaster Caroline Foran. With the world we once knew seemingly disintegrating before our eyes, many of us are no doubt struggling with anxiety. Having battled with the condition all her life, Caroline is the ideal guide to help us navigate this new terrain. For her, the time she realised that something had to change was when she landed what she thought was her dream job but then found herself overwhelmed by feelings of anxiety and despair. Tired of the control it exercised over her life, Caroline resolved to interrogate the reasons behind the condition and the means by which it disrupted her wellbeing. Her story and the knowledge she gained was documented in her best-selling book Owning It (available in all good bookshops), which was a huge success and led to her writing a sequel of sorts, The Confidence Kit, as well as producing a chart-topping podcast that delved deeper into how anxiety can affect a life and how we can deal with it. It wouldn’t be Be Grand without talking about our guest’s school days and Caroline explains how the illness made what should have been a happy time in her life a living nightmare as she struggled with feelings that she didn’t even have a name for and also expresses her hope that today’s school students have a better idea of when to say “enough is enough”. If any of this sounds too gloomy then be reassured by the fact that there’s also discussions on what it’s like for a book you’ve written to become a hit, how the dark days are sometimes “The City on the Edge of Forever” (one for Star Trek fans) and what we all really want to know… what exactly does Chris Pine smell like? Be Grand is delighted to return for a third season and is grateful for all of its listeners and fans. It all started with Katie and Des chatting about Des finding some old diary entries where to his surprise he was writing about being anxious in his early 20s. While editing Des decided there were too many unanswered questions so he went and chatted to Caroline Foran from Owning It: the anxiety podcast. She was able to chat about the science behind whats going on in your br and how it triggers stress responses and also about various ways to cope. She also shares her own story about how anxiety brought her to a difficult place in her own life. Listen all at once or break it up. Its a long but worthwhile listen. Caroline describes her journey from childhood tummy pains to not being able to leave the house as an adult and how she finally came around to accepting herself and how to deal with stress and anxiety in her life. Knowing your body and mind, being comfortable in your skin and educating yourself with information and knowledge can help you, she explains. “Once you understand it you are far better equipped to deal with it,” she tells me in an honest and in-depth interview that I’m sure you will find both inspiring and helpful. In this episode, I am joined by my brother Daniel who experienced a social kind of anxiety brought on by his stammer. Daniel has had a stammer for as long as I can remember but I never knew quite how much it affected him and gave him anxiety until recent years (he's in his mid 30s now) because he simply didn't want to discuss it. To go from a fear of saying his name out loud to recording with me, he has come a long way and I'm so proud of him. I've learned so much from this episode about triumph in the face adversity and I hope you will too. She's ‘your basic nightmare' (this is another quote from ‘When Harry Met Sally' before anyone loses their mind. Caroline was a dream). If you're a long-time listener and haven't left a review, well, what are you waiting for? Go to iTunes, Soundcloud or Stitcher and leave a few lines. Y'know, something simple like. ‘This podcast has completely changed my life' or ‘Esther has no flaws and the voice of a nightingale drinking honey'. Something along those lines. If that's too much, ‘good' will also do very nicely.A new episode will be up next Tuesday so until then, have a great week my cutie patooties.
