Many organizations struggle in understanding and monitoring the costs of their Kubernetes workloads, cloud infrastructure and cloud native applications. Moreover, different cloud providers use different conventions, which makes it difficult to compare across vendors and to monitor cost in multi-cloud environments. The lack of cost observability and vendor-agnostic FinOps standardization can become a critical business challenge.   OpenCost is a vendor-neutral open source project for measuring and allocating infrastructure and container costs. It's built for Kubernetes cost monitoring to power real-time cost monitoring, showback, and chargeback, across on-premises Kubernetes as well as cloud managed offering.   I discussed this topic with Matt Ray, Senior Community Manager for the OpenCost project. 2002 - Real Estate Roots The official story is that Odis started his real estate career in 2002 as a Multifamily leasing consultant. The truth, however, is that he was fluent in the language of real estate from an early age. His father, Odis Jr., had been a real estate broker since 1971 and took young Odis with him to the office and client meetings. It did not take long for Odis to pick up his father's work ethic and love of real estate. In 2003, Odis and his father opened their first office in San Jose, CA, and by 2005 they had added a mortgage brokerage to their list of services. Together they weathered the 2008 housing crisis until, in 2010, they had to close their doors for good. Odis returned to the Multifamily industry as a leasing consultant. From there, he was promoted to Assistant Manager, Community Manager, Senior Community Manager, and finally to Regional Manager, where he oversees $400 million in Multifamily real estate. 2008 - Drive to Help Others In 2008, Odis established the nonprofit organization Inside the Truth Ministries, Inc., which shared the message of love through the teachings of Jesus Christ. He financed this community outreach from his own pocket for three years until, after careful consideration, he closed the doors and turned his focus toward personal development. Soon Odis began using biblical principles in practical application to mentor new and would-be entrepreneurs. This remains his coaching style with professionals who are going through challenging times in their business. 2020 - Community Outreach through Real Estate While starting a small business—which would grow to reach seven figures in revenue—Odis found real estate investing to be far more rewarding than being a real estate broker. Through a real estate investing educational program, he learned several investment strategies that required little or no out-of-pocket capital. Odis began buying real estate to create opportunities for potential buyers who faced obstacles to homeownership and freely shared his investment strategies through social media and various websites. He is regarded as an expert in single-family home flipping and now draws on his regional manager experience in his Multifamily acquisitions and development. Odis's passion is to advance the economic position of African Americans through education, strategic investing, and relationship-building. He employs his unique background and skillset to concentrate on pre-gentrified neighborhoods of color, promoting ownership, commerce, and prosperity. Odis believes so strongly in the “never stop learning” mindset that he gives away his secrets to success. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gofishvillage/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gofishvillage/support

Today we're joined by an experienced community leader, Holly Firestone, whose work at Birthright, Atlassian, Salesforce, and now Venafi has transformed the way these communities are built and structured. We dive into where Community fits within an organization and the importance of having a separate community team with goals focused on the company goal and the role it can play across the organization. Holly has years of experience designing community teams and discusses the power of having a senior community manager overseeing specialized community managers, as well as the benefits of a community operations manager. Holly dives into the ins and outs of these roles and the importance of having a specific career path and goal for each member of the community team. We finish up by talking about key aspects of managing and hiring a community team, ensuring you make time for one-on-ones and everyone on the team is making decisions within their work scope. If you're trying to build, structure, lead, or hire a community team - this episode's for you. Rapid Fire Questions: - Up and Coming Community Builder/Creator: Brittni Cocchiara & Beth Vanderkolk Go-To Community -Engagement Tactic/Convo Starter: What was your first job? (p.s. Holly's was Chuck E. Cheese) - One Community Metric to Use for the Rest of Her Career: Engagement & valuable conversation. (Although communities are dynamic and this often depends on the business goals). - Weirdest Community Holly's been a part of: BBYU - jewish sororities and fraternities - Final Life Lesson: Slow down, be kind to others, appreciate yourself, stand up for what you believe in, do what you love, drink water, wear sunscreen, the best support you'll ever get is the support you give yourself. Notable Quotes: 1. “David: What are the things that you look for when interviewing in order to be able to identify who, who would be a great community manager, community operator for your team? Holly: Number one is empathy. And I think that you can find that in your conversations with anybody and understand, are they thinking about the experience for the people in your community first and foremost, can they put themselves in their shoes? Are they thinking about, you know, building for that, for that group of people? So I think that that's the most important because I don't think anybody can do the work that you do in a community team without that.” 2. David: “What do you think is really important for someone who's managing a community team? What were the systems or things that you did to make sure that team was successful and supported and had what they needed to do their work?” Holly: “ I think a regular one-on-one is so important and it's not just, you ticking off a list of everything that you want to talk to them about. They really have to be in the driver's seat for your one-on-one. So there's always, you spend, you know, half talking about the things that they need to get answered from you or, you know, Whatever questions or topics you need to discuss. And then half you're talking about them, what do they need? How are they feeling, what's going on? But they're equally important in my opinion, you know, and I think that creating a space for them to be able to share is also really important to share on a regular basis.“

We had a chat with Celina Zamora, who is the Senior Community Manager at Atlassian. Atlassian is known for its products like Jira, Bitbucket and Confluence. Today, Atlassian is serving over 135,000 customers across the globe.  Celina's job is all about building communities. She manages and supports Atlassian in-person communities within the Americas by working with community leaders, offering support and steer them. Her work involves engaging the online community by creating avenues for customers to easily connect with others like them.  With Celina onboard with us, we are going to learn how Atlassian built an online community where developers, content managers, project managers and others came together where they collaborate, connect and share valuable insights with each other.  It's not easy to explain the value of having a community and Celina understands this all too well since she saw how everyone was apprehensive towards the idea of having them.  But today, Atlassian product teams see great value in these communities where they get to enjoy actual face time with users, learn about their problems, offers them real time feedback and hear customer stories.  We will also be inquiring about the metrics they are using at Atlassians to gauge the effectiveness of these community events. Also, Celina shared with us how they are scaling their communities by building everything with heart and balance. They do this by focusing on where their customer is in terms of the platform they are using and how they are using it.
