Hey Everyone,In today's episode, we are joined by Jo Rawbone. Jo officially “discovered” she was an introvert when she completed a Myers Briggs profile in 1989. She'd always known that she was different from many of her peers, friends, and family and now she knew why. But whilst this enhanced her self-awareness, it didn't give her the tools to manage being an introvert in a world that is largely biased towards extroverts.Jo's personal experience throughout her more than 26 years as a trainer and consultant, working with thousands of international clients afforded her the opportunity to witness just how problematic this bias can. Thus, began a mission: to champion the cause of introverts and promote positive action to address the ‘extraversion bias', a mission that took her to the TEDx stage in 2019. In this episode, we talk about:How Jo became mad enough to start her mission of helping introverts flourishWe explore what an introvert is, and the many myths and misconceptions about what it actually means to be an introvertJo shares that in her experience of supporting introverts it's incredibly common to hear a statement we hear a lot on the show, “I'm just not a confident person”The topic of fear shows up and Jo shares her equation for managing fear in order to take actionThe story of how Jo came to name her inner critic and her inner advocate and how this has supported her own growth and developmentWhat it means to be an introvert in a world that expects everyone to speak up and say what they are thinkingWe hear Jo use some incredible language to describe the work she does including the idea of being a “Corporate Disruptor”The decades of people being told they need to be someone else or something different, and how that may have led to countless individuals struggling to be themselvesThe difference between, acting as if, vs. faking it until you make and how this relates to confidenceHow Jo supports teams and individuals to understand where the boundaries and edges of their comfort zones are in order to develop and improve What a fascinating episode, we hold no boundaries when it comes to where our conversations take us, and this episode is no different. There is so much to learn and take from this episode, whether you can relate to being an introvert or not, this episode has something for us all to learn and take away. Prior to working in coach development Chris worked at the Rugby Football League for 12 years in the Performance Department. During this time he coached England age group teams from U15 through to U20; more recently coaching the England Women Rugby League team to two World Cups. In this episode, we discussHow women are generally more emotionally aware and willing to share, compared to men who generally shut down and go insideHow Chris purposefully avoided the media during the early stages of of his International Coaching role and how he developed his confidence to manage the media We explore the idea of giving people the opportunity to be their best even if they don't meet the required standardChris poses the question, Are we communicating what we need when it comes to confidence? And why this is an important question to ask ourselvesThe idea of “tipping in” what's going right, instead of what needs improving or what has potentially gone wrongChris shares the C4 methodology and that when each of the areas are in place the environment individuals and teams are performing in becomes “explosive”That even to this day receiving positive feedback for his achievements or performance is difficult for Chris to accept, and how he's working on just saying, thank youAs a coach it's important to understand what makes people feel confident as only they will know thatThe wonderful idea of creating your own “greatest hits” in order to develop and grow your confidenceThat the people you surround yourself with can often see things you cannot, which when shared can help to build confidenceChris is incredibly humble, and shares openly and generously. It would be easy to assume that because of the level Chris performs he would have everything figured out. What's amazing about Chris is that he's vulnerable enough to say he hasn't got everything figured out, and that there are numerous areas in life he struggles with, including some that might surprise you! This conversation is powerful and deep and undoubtedly has something for every listener. In order to support our community further we have recently created the Two Coach Confidence Facebook Group (Link below). Two Coach Confidence CrewIf you enjoy the podcast, please SUBSCRIBE to our show and leave a review. Hey Everyone,For the second time on the show we welcome back a previous guest. It's our pleasure to welcome Adams' former coach Robbie Swale.Just in case you haven't listened to episode 14, here's a recap of who Robbie is. Robbie trained as a coach with The Coaching School in London and later with many other masters who support people to fulfil their potential. Robbie has provided coaching, training and facilitation for: Swiss Re, The University of Edinburgh, BetterUp (and through them many of the most forward-thinking companies in the world) and King's College London. Robbie predominantly works one-on-one with leaders and entrepreneurs who are grappling with the complexity of the modern world. In this episode we talk about,Robbies journey to creating his 12 minute writing practice and the importance this has played in his confidenceThe importance of creating some sort of creative practice no matter how big or small, and the connection this has to confidenceWe discuss the magic all humans have to create something from nothingThe fragility of confidence, and for Robbie his fragility to speak and share more of himself with the worldHow Robbie based his decision to share his writing initially on LinkedIn, as at the time he believed it wasn't a platform many people usedWe discuss that humans are writing more than ever, with email, texts, instant messages and therefore it's not necessarily a writing practice that's the problem for people wanting share their work or more of themselvesRobbie shares the challenges he often has around feeling sad and fragile in a morning and the routine he's created to improve his state before engaging with the wider world We discuss what Robbie refers to as the “vulnerability hangover” and what lies after the hangover subsidesThe topic of COVID enters the conversation, and how our perception of confidence in a safe vaccine is developed through trust in things most of us know nothing aboutAs we come to the end of the conversation Robbie shares the idea of re committing, and the power re committing has for many areas of our livesAnother wonderful conversation full of feeling and vulnerability. Robbie is clearly a deep thinker and has found a real gift for sharing his thoughts through a cathartic writing practice. There's a number of principles and ideas which Robbie has created which can be picked up and shaped for various areas of life, not least developing confidence even when there's a sense of fragility. Hey Everyone,Welcome to episode 20 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence. In today's episode we are joined by Iain Brunnschweiler. Husband and Father of two, Iain is currently Coach & Player Development Manager for Southampton FC. A former semi professional footballer, five years as a professional cricketer, author of two cricket coaching books, a first class degree in Sport Science, Lead Coach of England Development Programme for six years, and 18 months as Strategic Lead for Talent & Performance Coaching at UK Coaching. It's fair to say Iain has been in, and around elite and high performance athletes for a considerable amount of time. In this episode, we talk about,How Iain's confidence has changed both personally and professionally, and now at the grand age of 40 he now feels fairly confident.Iain shares how he has built strategies made up of three discrete areas, self talk, affirmations and remembering.Iain talks about confidence as something that he has an internal relationship with.We discuss the idea of understanding whether or not we have the resources to do what we want, and how this can impact confidence. An idea that has come up in a previous episode shows up again, creating your own personal board of trusted advisors. We delve into trying to get to know your own voice and why this can relate to developing a greater sense of confidence.Iain shares his thoughts on having just enough confidence to give something a go.The power of bringing any situation back to it's basic context, and in most situations it's not life or death. We listen to Iain share openly about his emotions and feelings of nervousness when he became head of international cricket. We discuss how naturally occurring challenges have supported Iain to develop his confidence. One of our favourite areas to talk around crops up, the importance and idea of thinking about thinking.Iain takes us on a real journey throughout this episode, we cover a significant amount of ground and touch on some wonderful ideas, content and stories. One thing we have been able to consistently share through the podcast is that confidence impacts everyone, regardless of stature, race, profession or background. We've all at some point realised we wish we had more of it, and wondered how to get more of it when we've needed it. Hey Everyone,Welcome to episode 19 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. In today's episode we are joined by Elliott Newell. Elliott currently works for the English Institute of Sport as a Sport and Performance Scientist, specialising in Psychological Support. Elliott works 1:1 with athletes, coaches, and leaders alike developing programmes and whole sport curricula. Whilst performance ultimately provides the context of what Elliott does, personal growth and development remains his focus. A humanist philosophy to work and life, means Elliott engages in his work with a view to nurture and support talent, rather than create or fix it.In this episode, we discuss,The link between competence and confidence, and why it's crucial to understand how the two areas co exist.Elliott discusses that he's never understood confidence as a skill, more that confidence is a way that we think.Elliott shares the idea that if we feel confident it's an emotion, however if it's a belief it's cognitive, and therefore something we can work with.We take a look at the difference between performing confidently vs being confident, and why this can be useful to consider from a personal perspective. We somehow end up in a wonderful conversation about understanding the roots of your being and what your real understanding of the world is.The simple, but perhaps forgotten idea that you don't have to be sick to get better.Elliott introduces us to the analogy of having “handrails” to develop and grow confidence, and how this has proved incredibly useful throughout his career. How Elliott never stepped too far from his secure base (comfort zone) whilst developing his sense of self and confidence.Elliott's struggle with the functional confidence of his body having suffered a serious knee injury. We explore the concept that we are not our bodies, however it is the vehicle in which we interact with the world. The concepts, ideas and depth of this conversation were fascinating for both of us. It's clear to see Elliott has a wealth of academic knowledge, which he is able to translate into simple language that will be invaluable for you as the listener. With every new guest comes a new idea or concept that continuously develops and expands our own thoughts and beliefs about this fascinating topic we call confidence. Hey Everyone,Welcome to episode 18 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence. In today's episode we are joined by the award winning Entrepreneur, Cherish Reardon. Cherish is owner of Popsy Clothing and over the last three years has built a community of over 85,000 women. Previously a stay at home mum with anxiety, Cherish now promotes body positivity and is passionate about helping women feel more confident. She has worked with Gok Wan, designed a dress for the Brit Awards and her designs have been seen on numerous tv shows including This Morning, Mock The Week and The One Show. In this episode, we talk about,Cherish's journey with confidence and anxiety, and how this has dramatically changed over the years, having grown up being affectionately known as little Miss Chatterbox. How being seriously bullied at high school significantly impacted Cherish's relationship with confidence, and her life in general.Cherish shares how the idea of selling online to avoid job interviews has led her to founding, and developing an online retail business. The fear of passing our challenges and struggles with confidence on to our children, and that this is at the core of why Cherish pushes herself to show up even when she's nervous and scared.Cherish shares that there were times when she literally struggled ordering food in restaurants, and that public environments were something she actively avoided. The responsibility to lead her 85,000 strong community and demonstrate that even though she may not always feel confident it's something that she continually works on.That Cherish previously thought of confidence as something you either are, or are not. How Cherish routinely sets little challenges to push herself outside of her comfort zone, and how this has led to increasing her confidence incrementally over time. How powerful it has been for Cherish to share her struggles and challenges about anxiety and low levels of confidence. How things as simple as sizing of clothes can dramatically impact people's confidence and how she has managed that with her own business.Softly spoken, with a very warm and generous energy, Cherish was an absolute pleasure to have on the show. There is no doubt that there is something in this episode for anyone who can identify and relate to struggling with their confidence. Whether we like it or not, it's becoming very clear to Kerry and I that certain experiences during our formative years can have a dramatic impact on our relationship with confidence. The good news is it doesn't have to define your way forward in life. The guests we are lucky enough to have joined us are proof that if you want to have more confidence in any given area of your life, it's absolutely within your gift. Welcome to episode 17 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence. In today's episode we are joined by Buddhist Monk Suryacitta. Suryacitta has been practicing meditation since 1989 and was ordained in 1999, during which he was given the name Suryacitta. He lived in a dedicated meditation retreat centre from 2001 - 2005. He is the author of five books on mindfulness, happiness and compassion including, Happiness and How it Happens - Finding Contentment through Mindfulness. In this episode, we talk about,Surya shares his fascinating journey to becoming a Buddhist Monk, including his time living in a retreat centre for 5 years. We discuss that we all suffer from stress, pressure, and other unwanted emotions and yet in many instances these experiences are self inflicted. Surya shares the idea that the mind can use you, OR you can use the mind, and how this can relate to confidence.Throughout the conversation Surya helps us to understand the power of reframing our thoughts and how to look at our human experience from an observational perspective. We discuss that we are all addicted to our own thoughts and thinking and how this can be detrimental to us.Surya shares the idea that thoughts hook us in, they're a carrot. However, on many occasions they're an empty promise.Surya shares a wonderful story from which he created the concept of “nexting” and how so many of us suffer from always thinking about what's next.We explore the idea that when we truly begin to feel, we can begin to heal.Similar to other guests Surya identifies that change has to be something individuals want to do, it can't be forced.During the episode we touch on the mind being a tool. A tool which we can learn to pick up and put down as and when we need it.Surya shares that pauses are the forgotten medicine, and that they are completely free.We explore the statement, I'm having the thought that….. And how this little sentence can transform your life. This episode is packed full of wisdom, ideas and wonderful stories to help us challenge and reflect on the way we think. Kerry and I won't lie, we had a wonderful time being in Surya's presence and listening to him generously share his experiences. Bizarrely we don't actually delve too deep into the idea of confidence, instead we just let the conversation flow. This is a very special episode for so many reasons, Kerry and I are extremely excited for everyone who takes the opportunity to listen to this episode. Please Enjoy! If you enjoy the podcast, please SUBSCRIBE to our show and leave a review. The idea of creating an imaginary board of advisors. We explore that as humans we don't see the world as it is, rather we see it as we are. And why this is important in the context of confidence.Simon goes on to share the idea that confidence starts off as a skill, but over time almost matures into a feeling. As we move towards the end of the episode Simon provides us with his top three tips, all based around his deep understanding of personal development.Simon's depth and knowledge of personal development is outstanding, the wisdom he shares throughout this episode is fantastic. Hey Everyone,Welcome to episode 12 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence. In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by Jack Revell. Jack has an 11 year background in the entertainment industry which has included modelling, commercial acting, podcasting, presenting and more recently being an IG Liver (if that's even a thing). Jack has a real sense of confidence whilst at the same time has a very humble and grateful demeanour. We explore lots during this episode, from being in an industry where people are compared to each other everyday in order to get paid, to not getting a job based on the way you look! In this episode, Jack's journey of modelling since the age of 18 working for some of the most well known brands on the planet!Jack shares his thoughts on knowing what he's NOT good at, and why this is something worthy of consideration for all of us.Jack shares his challenges and journey with the way his body looks, and how he has been impacted by his thoughts on body image.Jack shares how losing his father at the age of seven caused him to age beyond his years. How NOT being booked for work affected Jack's confidence, and the peaks and troughs that come from working in an industry where you very literally may not get work because your face doesn't fit.Interestingly Jack shares that he has always been a confident person, however he's more confident on set than off it. Even though he has no formal training in modelling. We discuss the importance of stripping back what's not important and doing more of what you actually enjoy. As someone who is expected to spend an amount of time on social media, Jack shares what some may perceive to be a bizarre activity, deleting followers and the reason that sits behind that action. As the conversation comes to an end Jack shares his belief that you almost have to have a certain amount of confidence to open up about confidence, albeit you only need to have a little bit. It's obvious that Jack has a deep sense of wanting to develop and grow as a human being. Another of the ingredients Kerry and I are collecting for the Secret Sauce of Confidence. The world in which Jack has operated and been a part of appears to have provided numerous opportunities to develop and grow his confidence. However, what's important to take away is that Jack has stepped into, and taken those opportunities each and every time they have been presented to him. Please SUBSCRIBE, leave a review and share with anyone you feel would value from the show.Episode Links,Modern Wisdom Podcast - https://modernwisdom.libsyn.com/Deepstash - https://deepstash.com/Medium - https://medium.com/Farnam Street - https://fs.blog/For more information on Jack visit,Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jackwrevell/ Website - www.jackwrevell.comFor more information about Kerry visit,Website: https://www.kerryhearsey.com For more information about Adams visit,Website: My Coach For Life | Life beyond limits
Hey Everyone,Welcome to episode 11 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence. In today's episode we have another first on the show, we welcome back our first set of returning guests. Due to the phenomenal conversation we had with this pair in episode 9 we felt we had to continue the conversation on another episode. We therefore welcome back brothers Mark and Rob Jarram.Just in case you haven't listened to episode 9, here's a recap of who Mark and Rob are. Mark is currently the Head Coach of Loughborough University Men's Basketball, Assistant Coach of Leicester Riders, Assistant Coach of Great Britain U20 Men's Basketball Team, and a Loughborough University Coach Developer.Rob has played an instrumental role as a PE Specialist working on the development of a programme called Sport Education, which led to him being asked to speak at a number of conferences to share his work. During his 10 years at Loughborough College creating a number of high profile elite athlete programmes, Rob was recognised for his outstanding work and contribution to the college and students alike. In this episode, Mark and Rob share how their parents went out of their way to provide as many opportunities as possible, and how looking back this created a certain sense of confidence. How their confidence grew when they realised the standards that had been instilled were good ones, and how meeting the expectations being set gave them confidence. We jump into the idea that females may perceive more threat than males and therefore perceive more fear, and how this can affect confidence. We discuss the idea that if you want to improve confidence stop talking about confidence! What happens if you choose to fail knowing the outcome, and how this can be beneficial to your confidence. And how this links to the fantastic work of Carol Dweck on Growth vs fixed mindset. We start to ask ourselves questions such as, Why would you want to be more confident? What impact would that provide? What are the top 3 things that are hampering your human potential? As we move toward the end of the show we remind ourselves of the wonderful phrase coined by the amazing Brene Brown, “Fucking First Time” and how this relates to confidence. Each and every time we open the doors to discuss this topic something new walks right on in. There's also a sense of some common themes beginning to materialise. Environment, family, preparation, and action to mention just a few.If you enjoy the podcast, please SUBSCRIBE to our show and leave a review.
