On the flight path of your life, what keeps you from reaching your desired destination most often? There’s one culprit that all of us can relate to in one way or another at one time or another. And it’s time to deal with it.   A Story to Set the Stage I plopped down in my aisle seat and breathed a sigh of relief. It was a tight connection between flights, and the sweat beading on my brow was evidence that I had hustled to make this one. I even had to pass up Chick-Fil-A in the food court to make it. I HATE missing a chance to eat Chick-Fil-A. But, I acknowledged very maturely, that’s a first-world problem, and my podcast IS about avoiding deathbed regrets and living my best life now. Missing Chick-Fil-A once surely won’t make the list of things I regret when the grim reaper comes to collect my bones. Again, I congratulated myself--very mature and reasonable of you. I’m really practicing what I preach!  As the cabin crew conducted their final checks before departure, I glanced around like most of us do to get the lay of the land, people-wise. Any toddlers likely to vomit without warning, scream inconsolably, or kick the back of my seat for the whole flight? Nope. Nice. Any unrepentant extraverts just waiting for me to unwittingly meet their gaze so they could engage me in hours of uninterrupted, stream-of-consciousness small talk? Hmm, none that I can detect. But keep your guard up, I told myself--they’re growing stealthier every day.  (Apologies to all the extraverts out there, BTW. No offense meant. Just the honest internal dialog of an introvert desperate seeking some sweet, sweet “I” time, as my extraverted wife and I call it.) As my own pre-flight people check continued, my gaze landed on the occupant of the aisle seat just opposite me. Her attire instantly identified her as a member of the flight crew--or at least a member of a flight crew. Another few seconds of quick--and hopefully not too creepy--peripheral scanning of her attire told me that she was, in fact, a pilot. She had just started casually browsing through a People magazine--the kind of brainless reading that a lot of us indulge in when traveling by air. Just something light and amusing to pass the time, we tell ourselves.  This was one of those moments when my introversion masquerades as extraversion--my curiosity compelling me to create a conversation that I ordinarily wouldn’t if nothing about the person had stood out to me. But I’ve always felt like a starry-eyed kid in the presence of pilots and soldiers and firefighters--people who do things on a daily basis that, from my perspective require unusual skill and courage and whose actions have huge life-and-death consequences on a routine basis.  “Are you deadlegging?” I asked, leaning into the aisle a bit and converting my mildly creepy peripheral scanning into an intentional attempt to engage. I also secretly hoped that “deadlegging” was the right term--one I thought I’d heard used before by flight crews referring to catching a ride as a passenger on one flight to make it to another flight when they would be on duty.  “You mean deadheading?” she corrected.  “Oh, heh,” I chuckled. “Yeah, that’s it.” Damn it, Petty, I thought, that’s what you get for trying to borrow another profession’s lingo like it was your own. “No,” she replied. “I’m working this flight.”  My confusion must have been obvious, because she followed up with, “Why do you ask?”  “Well,” I started, “I thought your uniform meant you’re a pilot, but I guess I was wrong. Are you an instructor or evaluator or something?” “Nope, I’m the pilot.”  “Wait. The plane can fly itself? With you sitting back here?” I asked, wavering between disbelief, confusion, and amazement. “Oh no,” she replied. “Technology’s amazing these days, but this aircraft still needs me to get us all where we’re going.”  “Soooo…Ok, I’m super confused,” I confessed. “You’re the pilot. The plane can’t fly itself to our destination, but you’re sitting here in the cabin with the rest of us. What am I missing?”  “Huh,” the pilot responded. “Weird. I guess when you put it that way, it does seem kind of strange. Maybe I’d better go check on things in the cockpit.”   With that, and a bit of a startled look in her eye, she got up and began to make her way to the cockpit.    An Identity Crisis Ok, full disclosure, if it’s not already obvious: The story I just told you never actually happened. But it sets the stage for the question I want us all to consider today. And here it is:  Are you sitting in the cabin when you should be in the cockpit?  Because here’s the thing: Each of us IS in fact the pilot of our own lives, whether we’re more often found seated in the cabin or in the cockpit.  By definition, no one else CAN be the pilot of our lives.  Maybe like me, you believe that a Higher Power is making your flight possible in the first place, intervening at critical junctures, and orchestrating your flight path from start to finish--like cosmic Air Traffic Control. Even so--even if you appeal to and depend upon a cosmic Air Traffic Control--only you can throttle up the engines of your life, point your plane in the direction you want to go, and take off.  But many of us spend way too much time sitting in the cabin with the passengers--ignoring or hiding from our pilot’s duties.   And when our “flight” is delayed or lands at the wrong airport or hits unexpected turbulence, we point the finger at everyone but ourselves.  Do you see yourself in your pilot’s uniform when you look in the mirror?  Or have you demoted yourself to passenger and left the cockpit empty? It’s time to promote yourself, and move from the cabin to the cockpit--where you really belong.    MY Identity Crisis It takes one to know one, as they say. I spent many years unaware that I was wearing a pilot’s uniform and had full access to the cockpit. I spent a lot of time looking for OTHER pilots to fly my plane--my parents, mentors, friends, therapists--all the while failing to realize that the pilot I was looking for was me.  That pattern persisted well into adulthood. It was flying under the radar in my life--undetected, but wreaking havoc on my flight plan all the same.  There are a lot of factors that led to me adopting that MO in life. Things from my childhood, some of the ways that I’m hardwired, my lifelong coexistence with Anxiety, etc.  None of those are excuses, though--just factors that I allowed to shape me into more of a passenger than the pilot of my own life. And it’s less important that I understand all of the factors than that I take the steps necessary to promote myself to my proper position as Pilot.    Bonus Thought / Quick Rabbit Trail Quick sidenote: I love the title of Tony Robbins’ autobiographical documentary--I’m Not Your Guru, because I think, implied, is this subtitle: Be Your Own Guru. That’s what I’ve discovered--my search for someone to play a guru role in my life got in the way of finding and following my unique flight path in this life. It’s great to seek counsel--to consult a navigator, a co-pilot, to communicate with Air Traffic Control--but in the end, only I can actually fly the plane.    Ancient Origins My personal take on the origins of this passenger / Pilot problem also includes an observation about human nature that is at least as old as the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Regardless of how you relate to that story--as historically accurate, just a useful moral teaching, pure myth, or something else--I think it’s super enlightening that when God first confronted Adam and Eve for their violation of His commands, Adam’s immediate response was that Eve made him do it.  “Hey look,” he’s claiming, “this lady--that YOU made, BTW, God--this lady is the pilot of the crazy plane that got us in this spot in the first place. She’s the one to blame! I was just a passenger!”  “Oh really?” I can hear God thinking, amused. “So you’re just a poor little passenger on a crazy plane flown by a crazy pilot that you didn’t even ask for in the first place, huh? Poor little helpless Adam!”  Then Eve takes picks up the “poor me” baton and continues with the nonsense: “The serpent tricked me, God! ME! Poor little trusting Eve! That vile serpent--that YOU created, BTW, God--IT told me it would be ok.” It’s easy to look at that story and go, “C’mon Adam and Eve, you knew what you were doing. Stop trying to shift the blame.” It’s easy to see through this same blame-shifting strategy when one of my boys blames his brother for why he hasn’t yet brushed his own teeth.  It’s a little harder to see it in ourselves, though. Because OTHER people may do that--and come to think of it, I see it all the time--but I certainly don’t play that game.  Ha. Really? I’m not looking for a debate on the origin and validity and value of the story of Adam and Eve. I AM asking you to look at the world around you and to peer deeply into yourself and see if you don’t bump into the same blame-shifting, self-demoting, self-protective impulses at work. Keeping you and others you know from fully assuming their proper role as Pilot of their own lives.  And folks, this passenger mindset keeps us from flying the one and only life we’ve got as beautifully, as creatively, as far, and as high as we can.  Man, I think that’s a tragedy.    My Promotion from Passenger to Pilot A turning point for me came when I encountered a psychological framework called Transactional Analysis. This framework landed on my mental runway at just the right time--thank you, Air Traffic Control. I’m not a psychologist or a son of a psychologist, but the quick and dirty description of Transactional Analysis is a way of understanding social interactions between people and evolving toward healthier patterns of relating. A specific application of Transactional Analysis, though, called the Drama Triangle, was the proverbial mirror that allowed me to see myself for the first time as a Pilot masquerading as a passenger.  And wow--it was a shock. After the initial shock wore off--think weeks, not minutes, hours, or days, merely--I began to take some of my first intentional steps up the aisle of the cabin toward the cockpit.  Today, I’m more fully situated as Pilot in the cockpit of my life. And the view and the ride are WAY better up here. I’ll admit it can be a bit more nerve-wracking up here, too. We don’t get to sit in the Pilot’s seat without also seeing the instruments that report systems’ status and the distant flash of lightning in our flight path. Unlike the passengers, though, as Pilot, we have the freedom and the power to respond to instrument warnings and storms on the horizon. Passengers can only hang on for the ride.    Are You a Passenger or the Pilot? Do you need to promote yourself from passenger to Pilot? You can take that first step today by simply acknowledging that fact. That’s your first step up the aisle toward the cockpit. Don’t stop until you get there. And once you get there, fly the plane of your life with all the skill, guts, gusto, and abandon that you can muster.    The Flight Path from Here I HIGHLY recommend checking out the Drama Triangle--for your own evolution and the wellbeing of your most cherished relationships. It rocked my world in the best possible way. Here’s a good place to start.  If you have realized that you need to promote yourself from passenger to Pilot, first of all, know that you’re not alone! And, I can help you. I’ve made the transition myself, and I work on it with my clients every week as they become the people they were made to be and live the lives they were made to live. In a recent session, a client asked “Am I sabotaging my relationship?” After being divorce and single, she has been in the process of dating. With the guy she is currently dating, she is unsure. She wants marriage and long-term partnership, and she doesn’t know if he does. She wants to have an emotionally mature connection, where they are each committed to trying to resolve conflict constructively. She doesn’t know if he is interested or capable. In exploring her question, based on her situation (They had a long-weekend get-a-way together. They had some conflict.), we discussed: Being out of alignment. If she is dating someone who is not interested in a more committed relationship and she wants long-term partnership, she may feel a sense of unease and discontentment regardless of how he shows up. Not feeling resolved. Even is he is being super sweet and trying to move forward from a conflict, she may have a difficult time feeling relaxed because she is not clear and resolved about their disagreement. Feeling threatened. If she has fear about rejection and abandonment (based on previous hurt and trauma), and she is dating someone who is more causal in their commitment, it is likely that she will find some of his behavior threatening (i.e. not consistent engagement). Feeling safe and worthy to experience love. Many times when we are experiencing more love and connection than we have ever known before, we may reach a point where we don’t know how to receive and be present. Hence, we unconsciously self-sabotage. Please listen to the podcast episode or read the transcript to hear stories, explanations, and examples. THE UPPER LIMIT PROBLEM In “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks, he talks about how we all limit our experience through various ways of self-sabotage. Most of us grow up experiencing a certain level of success, abundance and love. We might call this our comfort zone. As we grow, develop, and we may strive to accomplish more and achieve new levels of love, abundance, and success. However, when we do this, we are often confronted with a threshold of what we are capable of receiving. Gay calls this our Upper Limit. This is all happening below our field of awareness. Gay Hendricks describes that we have one or more hidden barriers, which are essentially our fears of why it is not okay to expand into new levels of love, abundance, and success. When these unconscious fears get activated, we constrict. We cut off the flow of energy and expansion. When I explain this process to clients, I like to use a cup analogy. The cup represents our comfort zone. The water or liquid that is being poured into the cup represents abundance, love or success. We can easily contain the abundance that fits within our comfort zone. However, when the liquid (or abundance) starts to fill up the cup and seems to be hitting the threshold of what the cup can contain, we start reacting and unconsciously stop the flow of liquid because we do not know how to contain more. WAYS WE SELF-SABOTAGE Here are some common ways that people cut off the flow of abundance, success, and love (from The Big Leap, by Gay Hendricks): Worrying Blame and criticism Getting sick Having a accident Picking a fight Hiding significant feelings Not keeping agreements Not speaking significant truth to the relevant people Deflecting These are all ways that we unconsciously restrict or limit themselves. I am sure you have heard many stories where someone has accomplished great success and then the next moment they do something to sabotage themselves (i.e. politicians, professional athletes, actors, musicians). Or maybe you can reflect on a memory of your own, where you experienced a great success and then you did something to bring yourself back down. Gay Hendricks helps us understand why we do this. Most of the time our fear comes from an early experience in life, where we internalized a message that it is not okay to shine or expand. HERE ARE THE 4 COMMON HIDDEN BARRIERS (FROM THE BIG LEAP, BY GAY HENDRICKS): Feeling fundamentally flawed Disloyal and abandonment Believing that more success brings a bigger burden The crime of outshining The goal is to become more aware and mindful about when you experience your upper limit and how to work with it more consciously. Going back to the cup analogy, you will want to expand the size of your cup. 4 KEYS TO WORKING WITH THE UPPER LIMIT PROBLEM (FROM THE BIG LEAP, BY GAY HENDRICKS) Breathe. Observe. Adopt an attitude of wonder and play What was I thinking right before I started worrying?” What was I thinking about right before this happened? Explore: What is the underlying fear or concern (hidden barrier)? Expand capacity: I consciously expand my capacity for more abundance, success, love every day, as I inspire those around me to do the same. Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

Episode 179: Have you been using the same tools in your self-care practice for years? Are you ready to try a few new things? I am a huge advocate of self-care, as it is a tool I use to practice my self-love. Self-care is self-love, but self-love is not only self-care. In today's podcast episode I'm going to give you a tremendous list of self-care practices I use in my life. Please note, I do not do all of these practices on a daily basis. I stick to 1-3 of these tools daily and in order to make sure I'm doing things that are truly fueling my energy for the day, I consistently let go of practices that no longer serve me. Always keep in mind: the best self-care ritual is one that you're going to do. It's no brainer that if your practice isn't fun or fulfilling, you won't want to do it, so make sure that everything you do is aligned with how you want to feel for the day. If it's not enjoyable, don't do it even if all the other self-help gurus in the world say it's the best practice everrrr! Create a self-care practice that makes you happy. Period. Show notes: Three important things to know before you jump into this episode An easy assignment to keep in mind as you soak up these new self-care practices One way I decide what I want to do (and if I want to do it at all) is to ask myself: does this make me contract or expand? The types of crystals I'm loving lately and how I use them Click HERE to check out the book I mention in the podcast, Crystal Muse, and to listen to the episode I did with the authors, Heather and Timmi, click HERE Palo santo: why I love it and how to use it (buy from Amazon HERE) The mindset that I have towards these woo-woo type tools How candles have the power to help you tap into your rest // relaxation and cozy-vibes Some documentaries I love that have helped me connect to my desire to make the world a better place Examples: The True Cost, What the Health (I'm not vegetarian by the way), The Human Experiment, I am Not Your Guru, The Masks we Wear Why I purchased a plant when I went through my last breakup (and how it continues to satisfy my yearning for nurturing love!) Goal-writing during the New Moon, Full Moon or beginning of the month Why massages are a consistent self-care gift I give myself (and it also satisfies my love language: physical touch) Other forms of body work: ROLFing, reiki, sensory deprivation tanks, saunas, chiropractic work Why I'm all about getting pedicures and manicures Vedic Meditation: what it is and how it's been changing my life for the better Some more self-care tools I mention in this episode (you must listen to the actual episode to understand why I include these!): coffee dates with girl friends, reading, tarot cards, movement, self-dates, free-flow gratitude writing, physical touch/connection) The non-negotiable self-care rituals I do every day...for now Want to get a free audiobook from Audible? Do you follow your "Yes?"Following your "Yes" is about you taking a step forward in your partnerships by taking action and applying at least one thing you heard from our guests during their interviews this week. On today’s episode, all of this week’s guests have generously provided BONUS MATERIAL, not included in the interviews you listened to earlier this week. Each one has provided incredible examples of the power of following your “Yes”.  Enjoy! Emily RoseNot Following - Emily found herself getting into a relationship with someone who she really didn’t want to get into a relationship with. There were a bunch of “yeses” showing up in the form of “nos” and then there came a really big one. She had a very clear “get out now”message and yet she didn’t. Emily got swept up in it anyway. Not surprisingly, the relationship ended and it is one of the few times she has not stayed friends after the breakup. Following - A friend of Emily’s who is a crew manager for Tony Robbins offered her tickets to shortly after she had watched the documentary “I am Not Your Guru” about Tony and she was a full on “Yes.” Then after she had already said Yes, she had to check on her schedule and plane tickets etc. And as a result of following this “Yes” every element of her life has changed. Magic happened that included her getting to sit in the front row of a 10,000 seat stadium for the event toe to toe with Tony. And people she met at this event in California have introduced her to amazing people in Texas where she lives. Instead he stayed even though he was aware he was not emotionally available in the way that she needed. Eventually she ended up leaving him, and he felt even worse for the pain he had caused her. Antia - Antia was invited to a man’s home that was about 30 - 40 miles away.  Her “Yes” was not to go. But she didn't listen to it and on her way there it started storming and hailing so hard people were pulling over. And she still kept going. She was forcing the situation and when she returned home was aware how much power she had given away. Following - Brody - Brody was a poor college student and really did not know how to connect with women.  He was about to hire his first dating coach and did not really have the money. On top of that, he was in a depression after his first girlfriend has dumped him. Brody listened to his “Yes” and signed up anyway.  Just a few months later he met his wife, Antia, and it is the result of his following his “Yes.’ Antia - Antia followed her “Yes” the day she met Brody.  She was on the beach in Hawaii and got this guidance to go to a MeetUp. Though it did not make sense to her as she was having a great day at the beach when she received this guidance. Turns out the MeetUp she decided to attend is where she met her husband, Brody. Your Fans are Waiting - and a spoken word piece at the end--- WHOA! How would you describe yourself? Motivational person who teaches people how to be their best self and love their best self- and their worst self Let's take all this and make something out of it. The best way to describe what i do, is the combination of real tactics and strategies to change your live, to develop your business- primarily through art. Tony Robbins is a huge inspiration.  Identify who you are at the most raw, most honest, and put those pieces together as a mold and create the individual you see.  at 6'8" can seem very intimidating, but he is a sweet heart. The physical represetation of who he is, and the quest to find more transparency in his life. Grew up in DC in "you've got drive throughs, we've got drive bys" "I saw more of the artist in you" as he has gotten to know Lisa. Sanyika hanging out with a friend in a barber shop with his friend who liked to record his thoughts, and the recorder falls out of his pocket and all the guys think they're cops! There is this weird idea that we have to torture ourselves to create. You can still be an artist and be creative.  "You don't have to be bound by the same chains of artistry and struggle. Those two things are mutually exclusive. You can still flourish and prosper." - Sanyika [Tweet theme="basic-white"]"The demonization of money is the first way that artists have been held down." @sanyikastreet #honestlylisa[/Tweet] [Tweet theme="tweet-box-normal-blue"]"If you've played it small long enough, when it looks like things are getting bigger, it gets scary." #honestlylisa[/Tweet] Fear of bouncing off negative attention, fear of not being able to handle the money (Are you listening universe? I can handle it!)  Bouncing back and forth between high and low points. "At that low point, eitherI can choose to rise into the person I always imagine myself being, or i can just stay there and hide." "Rising is scary" - Lisa "Hiding is not a life satisfied" - Lisa Listening to the heart lately, trusting things will be fine as they grow. Everyone wanted Sanyika to fit into the mold, help them move.  "I am the pick up truck" because he's big and strong. But he organizes the truck--- not even do the heavy lifting! Metaphor for what he does now! Wow! [Tweet theme="tweet-box-normal-blue"]"The way you organize and empower people to do good is by asking the powerful questions" @SanyikaStreet #honestlylisa[/Tweet] It feels like an impossible task to be honest with yourself.  "It's so easy to lie when you're 6'8" and 300lbs. Everyone thinks you're a celebrity."-Sanyika "I never want to walk the red carpet because I feel so invisible." - Lisa Sanyika realized that red carpets are for selling yourself or something, so he rarely walks one.  "If you are caught up in a world where you are not being honest with yourself, then no one can help you- no one knows what your challenges are." - Sanyika This process of revelation, vulnerability began with a video blog to tell his story.  Lisa finds it easier to tell the truth on stage than real life. How do you find that? Meditation? Therapy? "We aren't really learning anything new about ourselves, it's more about a revelation process." - Sanyika If you keep hiding, you're going to betray the people who instilled the confidence in you, and the people you could be helping. - Lisa/Sanyika Fans - Real people, maybe even your family and friends for you to be inspirational for. Not even Beyonce status. How do you not shit all over who you were, not that you're feeling better.  "The greatest gift in that struggle is humility" - Sanyika The inability to embrace people you don't agree with, when you're trying to teach the world to be more accepting. Sanyika's Instagram for awesome videos every day.  This has to resonate with me first, anything he wants to teach someone else. "There's nothing more impactful than doing something every day." -Sanyika Some mornings you don't want to do it, but every day you have a choice. It's a very simple equation.  We have choices for more than whats for dinner. Even feelings, "I don't have to feel that way."  "It's so real to me, so grounded in my reality and who I am" - Sanyika, on sharing videos every day That reality guides him. It has to come from the right place. "I am the happiest I've ever been on this planet, and that is the most powerful I can be" - Sanyika I just want to absorb his happiness! I don't know what happiness is most of the time. How shaving your boyfriend's back can bring intimacy - it's not the moments you think they are! We are monkeys grooming each other, nothing more intimate.  "It's not the award on the stage. It is the impact of great moments in your life aligning at the right time " -Sanyika --Or the ability to see it! - Lisa   We are searching for the path, we want to know the way.  Things we aspire to 1) Better quality of life, and 2) Better quality relationships We are really not in this alone, we are sharing a human experience. Incubating your own ideas feels like insanity. OR asking everyone else what to do. Where are you in this? "We must pursue information with the curiosity of a 5 year old, and with the diligence to challenge everyone." -Sanyika You have to do the work on your own, and then ask others when you hit a roadblock. If you want to find the answers, you need to ask the questions and surround yourself with others who will ask you questions for you to answer! Be wary of people who tell you what to do. No one can tell you what to do, when you want something in your heart.  [Tweet theme="tweet-box-normal-blue"]"As people we underestimate the importance of communities." @SanyikaStreet #honestlylisa #honestlylisapodcast[/Tweet] Biggest punishment in society-- solitary confinement. " We punish ourselves by trapping ourselves in our own ideas. The first thing you do is be honest!" - Sanyika Make sure you watch Tony Robbin's documentary "I am Not Your Guru" - bust down your misperceptions, because he is amazing at helping people. Communities are critical to advancing society, because we can't replicate our individual selves. We have a gift, but there are other things we aren't good at, and we need help.  How do I create a community, get people to help me with what I'm doing? The Geminis exclaim their newfound love of Tony Robbins. When they speak about honesty and openness, Kathy gives Ginger the smackdown before she can complete her point, then somehow they segue to open relationships, which they only know about through hearsay.  As usually the Gems reference a bunch of stuff you may want to know about. The Mindset Mountain Podcast

Constructing Myself These words hit home for me after watching the new Tony Robbins Documentary….I'm Not Your Guru! Think about it….how many of us are exactly who we want to be? I mean realistically, not to be Michael Jordan but knowing we don't have the God Given skills or talents, but I mean to be excelling in all aspects of our lives. Are you physically where you want to be, considering the your body you've been given? Are you financially where you want to be,  no matter the circumstances you were born under? How about your relationships, are you a contributor to the lives of others and do you have a strong body in your marriage, with a significant other, or even a business partner? Well, to reach those high points, we have to ‘construct ourselves' to become the individuals we desire to become. We have to create the blue print ourselves and begin laying down the foundation of what we want for our lives. Well, it's time to listen in as I keep this short, but I want to trigger these thoughts in your life to begin putting in the work so you can “construct your life” for what you want it to become! Listen In….. Also, be sure to subscribe if you haven't already at: Mindsetmtn.com/itunes or Mindsetmtn.com/stitcher and please leave a review to help other listeners find our podcast and the reasons why they too should subscribe!
