Dear Leaders, If talent is everything...then how are you increasing it and further attracting it? It's a simple question but can you answer it quickly and write down a list of what you are doing, how you are doing it (consistently) and how you are measuring the impact. Turnover? Retention? Promotions? Open Positions? Revenue growth? Employee satisfaction? Not at all? Over the past several weeks on LinkedIN I have read numerous posts that list all the reasons team members are resigning but I am not seeing why team members are deciding to stay. Wow, wouldn't that be an awesome post to see... I am staying because...vs. today I resigned because... Food for thought and the exact topic I talk about today on the 386th episode of #YourMorningCommute. I do this podcast daily to provide you with a quick, less than 5 minute, giddy-up to frame you day. I usually ask some questions to get you in reflection or action mode and then off you go to make an impact as a courageous leader for the day. Are you providing a giddy-up to your talent daily? Growing talent takes time, nurturing, patience, and empathy to name a few ingredients. What ingredients are you using to grow your talent intentionally? Sales Game Changers | Tip-Filled Conversations with Sales Leaders About Their Successful Careers
Read the complete transcript on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. SHELLEY’S TIP TO EMERGING SALES LEADERS: “To get ahead, go to your direct manager and ask them what does success look like at the end of the day, at the end of the week, at the end of the quarter so that you know what’s expected? When there’s clarity around expectations, it’s easier to be accountable. When I really know what’s expected of me, it’s easy for you to come back and hold me accountable when you and I both articulated what the outcome is supposed to be.”

With brand new Red Dwarf back on our screens, no pesky lockdown was going to prevent us from forcing our semi-formed, barely-thought-through opinions on you via a live platform. The entire G&T team of Jonathan Capps, Danny Stephenson and Ian Symes logged on to the G&T Towers remote access point, as did our guests Phil Pagett, Jo Sharples and Shelley Smith. And there was much to talk about over the course of two damn hours, including giant floppy disks, fake deaths, moonlight, a bit of unfortunate outdated language, the new Gary Glitter of space, surprising siblings, a more fitting name for the Anubis Stone, and men of painted neck. For the first time ever, we bothered to properly integrate the Skype feed into our broadcasting console, rather than just turning the speakers up loud enough to be picked up by the microphone in the room and hoping for the best. It worked a little too well on the night, with the Skype correspondents much higher in the mix than the people behind the desk, but we've managed to tweak the levels a little for this catch-up version, to provide a slightly less irritating listening experience.

After more than a decade of wild growth, Michelob Ultra is now well-established as Anheuser-Busch InBev’s king of “better-for-you” beer. As odd as it may sound to beer enthusiasts, the brand has become paradigmatic in its popularity and sales figures. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before other breweries wanted to play catch-up. The Ultraficaton race is now very much on, with entries in the low-calorie, low-carb space multiplying quickly from breweries big and small. Among these is a new release from Boston Beer’s Marathon Brewing Company: a similar, sort-of-subsidiary effort not unlike its Alchemy & Science (now A&S Brewing) incubator, which acquires and promotes smaller breweries. Marathon’s first nationwide release was ushered to store shelves by brewer Shelley Smith, who joins this Sightlines podcast to talk 26.2 Brew: a beer that had previously only been available around the Boston Marathon. The brand will now see ramped-up production and will, from March, be marketed to beer drinkers who also prioritize their active lifestyles. At 4% ABV, 9 grams of carbohydrates, and 120 calories (stats that all appear in the product’s marketing materials), 26.2 Brew is just the latest product aimed at a growing number of shoppers who want to pair their wellness with their beer. Now, let’s get an idea of what all of this means for one of the largest beer companies in the U.S. This is Shelley Smith, brewer and manager of research and product innovation with Boston Beer. Listen in.
How has ESPN reporter Shelley Smith managed such a long successful career? She details to Sarah Spain in the latest podcast, including the difference between being likable versus demanding respect and her take on life and work during and post her battle with Cancer.
Shelley Smith is a reporter at ESPN. She’s done stories on some of the most memorable moments in sports history. It is the unique angles that keep Shelley, who avoids the obvious, valuable on the sidelines at games. The Adversity Everyone knows Shelley is a pro. When life creates adversity, Shelley gets simple. She creates a plan and keeps working. Smith defeated cancer. When she lost her hair from treatments, she appeared on camera bald, enjoying not having to worry about the wind messing up her hair. While covering the Warriors, Shelley had a stroke in the team's locker room. When her mom passed, she got back to work on the sidelines in Denver where her mom and her had gone to games. Hip and knee surgeries simply make walking without a limp a significant goal; and Shelley pushes through.
It's been eight days since the start of the twentieth Dimension Jump convention, honouring the thirtieth anniversary of Red Dwarf, and to be honest we still haven't fully recovered. If you're looking for a comprehensive, chronological and coherent guide to what happened over the weekend, you won't find that here (Gazpacho Soup's social media roundup does a good job of that). Instead, we waited until the early hours of Monday morning, when everyone was at their most tired and emotionally involved, and gathered whichever attendees and team members were still around, regardless of their levels of energy or sobriety. It offers a fairly accurate snapshot of the mind of your average Red Dwarf fan having come to the end of such a special weekend. Our random anecdotes and memories include our reactions to the weekend's bits and bobs for Dwarf news - ie. the current status of the Blurays and Series XIII, behind the scenes goss about the time Jo accidentally stalked Charles Augins, speculation as to the contents of a "honeymoon video", adventures in urinals with three former Red Dwarf producers, complaints about a lack of biscuits, and a very rude story about Clare Grogan and a glass of milk. A huge thank you to the whole Fan Club team for running such a fantastic weekend, all the guests for entering into the spirit, and all the attendees for creating such a happy atmosphere. Special thanks to our DwarfCast guests for showing up at such an ungodly hour. Joining John Hoare, Tanya Jones, Danny Stephenson and Ian Symes were: DJ team members Jez Harrison, Mick Hayes, Carrie Parsons, Kiran Parsons, Shelley Smith and Jo Sharples, along with attendees Si Bromley, Paul Filipczyk, Stephen Fletcher, Ali Green, Peter Jones and Dan Pendleton.
Brian Windhorst, Andrew Han, Kevin Arnovitz, Ramona Shelburne and Shelley Smith discuss Colangelo's departure from the Sixers (1:00), Game 3 of the NBA Finals (14:45), Durant's performance (33:15), the Cavs' offseason plans (38:10) and LeBron's plans (53:05).
Have you considered online counseling? As clinicians, we all have questions and fears around this endeavor and how it works. We have discussed the practical aspects of online counseling on the show before, but today’s conversation focuses more on the day-to-day aspects of the therapeutic relationship. Shelley Smith and Jennifer Labanowski are LMFT’s who have a wealth of knowledge about online counseling. In what is possibly a first for G&T, a consensus has been formed regarding the quality of a new episode, and it's not negative. To document this momentous occasion, 80% of the team - namely Jonathan Capps, John Hoare, Tanya Jones and Ian Symes - congregated to explain exactly how this has come about, along with our excellent guests Jo Sharples and Shelley Smith, both of the Official Red Dwarf Fan Club. Join us for noticeably jollier than average discussion about all things M-Corp, including perception filters, word counts, virtual worlds, puppetry, birthday presents, startup sounds, vibrators, radio jingles, and whether or not cats wank. We also round up Richard Naylor's revelations on Mechocracy, find ourselves once again pondering the possibility of a Red Dwarf Movie, and look ahead to what appears to be a jam-packed series finale.

Who'd have thought it: the episode about a place where criticism is illegal is the one that's attracted more criticism than any other this series. Join John Hoare, Tanya Jones, Danny Stephenson, Ian Symes and the Fan Club's Jo Sharples for a spot of criticising, castigating, chiding, blaming, harping, panning and scoffing at Timewave. It's not pretty at times, but I'd like to think we at least covered the reasons why we reacted so badly to the episode, and we were aided by two fantastic guests - Shelley Smith and Dan Pendleton - to give their perspectives on some of the trickier topics. The brilliant subjects that we really enjoyed discussing to death included the problematic portrayal of the Enconium's crew, Cat's problematic attitude to women, unresolved plots, repetitive jokes and speedy resolutions. Plus, for the second week in a row we discuss the word "clitoris" and Operation Yewtree, although not at the same time. On the plus side, there are positive comments at a rate of roughly one every twelve minutes, a brief preview of the next episode, and... well, the intro music's pretty catchy this week.

If you have been thinking about using video to market yourself and your business, and something has been stopping you from moving forward, you're in luck. This episode is full of great tips. A few weeks ago, I ran a 10-Day Video Challenge. I had not done this before and I didn't know what to expect. But it went so well, I will be running this free challenge several times a year. So you can sign up here to be notified when the challenge runs again. I want to share what I learned from this experience. First - Everybody loves a challenge. Who knew? I guess it makes sense since a challenge gets our creative and our competitive juices flowing. And people love the idea of winning prizes. Second - The challenge itself is so powerful because our community was tied to it. I gave some basics as far as topic ideas and some checklists to help you create your videos. But that was it. People posted their videos on social media, Facebook primarily, using the hashtag #STANDOUTVC and anyone could search for the videos and watch them. I loved reading the comments and seeing the encouragement from the community. It's a form of positive peer pressure. And the last thing I learned, although I definitely knew this before, if you don't have the right message, as well as a really clear one, creating your videos or any content for that matter becomes so much harder. The reason people dropped out is they simply didn't know what to say. For those that kept going, having that crystal clear message helped them figure out what should be in the next video. The big winner of the 10-day video challenge gets a chance to be on this podcast. So I'm excited to introduce you, again, to Shelley Smith. You may remember Shelley from Episode 17, where she talked about the mistakes entrepreneurs make when growing their companies. If people are leaving your company, if morale is low, if you have trouble recruiting great talent, it could be a company culture problem. And Shelley fixes that issue. She is a culture rescuer. Recently, Shelley really started to embrace that messaging surrounding company culture. And her videos during this challenge were very strategic, designed to speak to people who worry about retention, morale and productivity all day long. I encourage you check them out. You can see them in the STANDOUT Facebook community. And listen to our interview, where you'll hear how she faced her fear of the camera and created 10 videos in 10 days, how that effort is paying off big time and why she is not stopping. What you'll learn in this episode: *Why Shelley took the challenge*What she loved about it*How she turned the challenge into a way to advance her business*How she set up her process to create batched video content*How she used content she had already created to put together her video strategy*How she structures her videos*How she uses notes in her videos*How a clear message that focuses on culture has helped in her business*How she is becoming a thought leader*The one question she asks on surveys that has helped with her messaging - and how it can help you Links mentioned in this episode: *Shelley Smith's YouTube channel*

It has now been a full seven days since the start of The Official Red Dwarf Fan Club's nineteenth convention, but the feeling of elation is yet to wear off, along with the taste of the booze and the complete physical and mental exhaustion. To preserve the memories for years to come, as well as to fill in those who were unable to attend, a merry band of extremely tired people congregated in a hotel room on the Sunday night to record the traditional post-DJ DwarfCast. Those people were Danny Stephenson and Ian Symes from G&T, Alex Newsome, Joey Newsome, Carrie Parsons, Shelley Smith and Jo Sharples from the Fan Club, DJ helpers Amy Foley, Kiran Parsons, Tom Pyott and Lauren Seamans, and DJ attendees Mark Bowen, Stephen R. Fletcher, Heledd Flower, Dan "Pendo" Pendleton and Jonathan "Jonsmad" Young. We tried to go through the weekend in chronological order, but it soon descended into a hotch-potch of such diverse topics as pink helmets, giant bazookoids, confused firemen, Michael McGruder, six degrees of separation, four-way coffee lounge cocks, Morris dancing, signed babies, gay rays, the quizzing skills of Seb Patrick and a definitive answer as to the future of Red Dwarf. Only one of those is a lie.

Fisher opens the show with a fascinating story about how World War II bombs still have the potential to kill people in both Britain and Germany. Wait until you hear what happened in both countries recently and the statistics of how often live Allied bombs are found in Germany every day! He then talks about a New York realtor who recently had the unusual experience of being randomly chosen to sell a property and business that had been started by his great grandmother 110 years ago. Fisher then visits with Shelley Smith, who recently worked with Fisher to use a DNA test along with other information to identify both her birth mother AND birth father! While both are deceased, she has also learned of living birth siblings from both sides of her birth parents' lines. In identifying the birth father, Fisher used a technique known as "triangulation" to zero in on the family and the correct individual. Triangulation can also work in traditional genealogy research to identify ancestors. Under the right circumstances, it's not that difficult to do. How did it work in Shelley's case and how can triangulation work for you? Fisher will explain. Then Tom Perry from TMCPlace.com, the Preservation Authority, talks about how to undo the effects of humidity on old movies, photos, and negatives. Yes, the is hope even in the worse cases. If you have a question for Tom, send an email to AskTom@TMCPlace.com. You might hear your question answered on the show. It's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!
