This week on the Arts to Hearts Podcast, we have Anupa Mehta as our guest, who is a force to be reckoned with in the contemporary art world. In this episode, our host Charuka Arora asks Anupa about her experience in the art world, the shift has she seen over the years, and her own relationship with artists and art collectors. Anupa has been in the art world for quite some time now, and she has closely witnessed how things have changed, something she touches upon in this podcast. Anupa has had an illustrious career. With three decades of experience as an editor, art consultant, curator, and gallerist, Anupa is not only trained in journalism and arts management, but she also holds a Master's degree in Narrative Therapy. She is also the founding editor of Art India magazine, and the author of INDIA 20, a book of interviews with leading contemporary Indian artists. Anupa started her career at a time before the evolution of the digital world, and so she misses the slowness of life and how people were able to have a conversation face to face. While she enjoys her work as much as she did all those years ago, she can also sense a shift in perspective and behavior among the younger artists. For those contemporary artists, Anupa has only one piece of advice and that is to ‘be adaptable'. Listening to Anupa, it becomes clear why and how she was able to excel in her career path. As a gallerist, Anupa knows the art of building relationships. She values trust and integrity above all, and that is why she is able to form sustainable relationships with her clients, whether they are art collectors or artists. She still looks at the world in a way that may be described by some people as old-fashioned, but that is a good thing. It is precisely those values that have enabled Anupa to see through people and gauge their needs, and that's what makes her so good at what she does. So, tune into this week's full episode to find out more about Anupa and how she sees the art world of today! Arts to Hearts Project is thrilled to announce the launch of our new call for art for a virtual exhibition, accompanied by the creation of an exquisite artist's book. The virtual exhibition promises to be a captivating showcase of visual experiences, while the artist's book will serve as a timeless collection of these vibrant creations. Sabi nga, “Every sin in a way, is a social sin.” It separates us from the society. Amen. - Sr. Tina Madrigallos, fsp l Daughters of St. Paul

In this episode of the Ocean Optimism podcast, host Ellen Spooner interviews Anupa Asokan, Senior Ocean Advocate for the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC https://www.nrdc.org/ ). Anupa's extensive experience includes work with the World Surf League, the X Prize Foundation, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This discussion revolves around the 10 year review process for California's Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network. The episode emphasizes the significance of long-term monitoring and adaptive management in evaluating the effectiveness of MPAs. Scientific research has shown that protected areas promote biodiversity, increase fish populations, and contribute to ecosystem resilience. Anupa explains that different levels of protection exist within MPAs, with fully protected and highly protected areas offering the greatest benefits. The interview touches on the pressures facing California's marine ecosystems, including fishing activities, climate change impacts such as kelp forest loss and sea star wasting disease, and water quality issues like nutrient runoff and plastic pollution. Anupa emphasizes the need for compromise, valuing diverse perspectives, and incorporating marginalized communities, such as indigenous tribes, in decision-making processes.Regarding the ongoing ten-year review of California's MPA Network, Anupa encourages listeners to get involved and support organizations aligned with their values. Supporting nonprofits, volunteering time or expertise, and engaging in conversations about marine conservation are practical ways for individuals to contribute. Anupa also highlights the importance of equitable access to nature, which creates opportunities for more communities to experience and value marine ecosystems. The episode concludes with a sense of optimism stemming from the recognition of new voices and perspectives in marine conservation and the existence of solutions and tools to address the challenges faced by our oceans. In this episode, you will be able to: Investigate the vital discussions on diversity and ocean justice from the Upwell conference. Contemplate the existing gaps in diversity within ocean conservation and advocacy circles. Acknowledge the essential role played by marginalized communities in conservation endeavors. Comprehend the complex intersection of ocean justice with environmental and economic aspects. Consider how adaptive management continuously reshapes our views on conservation achievements. My special guest is Angelo Villagomez, Anupa Asokan Angelo Villagomez is an experienced ocean advocate with a focus on well-designed and implemented marine protected areas. Currently working for the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC, Angelo has spent years advocating for ocean conservation and has an extensive background working with coastal communities in the Caribbean and Pacific. As an avid scuba diver and a passionate voice for ocean justice, Angelo is committed to making the conservation field more inclusive and diverse. Anupa Asokan is a dedicated conservationist with a diverse background in film, fisheries management, and marine protected areas. As a passionate surfer and paddleboarder, Anupa's love for the ocean runs deep. Currently working as a policy analyst for the Natural Resources Defense Council, her focus is on the promotion of sustainable fishing practices and the establishment of marine protected areas. Anupa's unique skill set allows her to effectively communicate the importance of ocean justice and work towards a more inclusive conservation community. The resources mentioned in this episode are: Register for the Upwell: A Wave of Ocean Justice conference on June 7th at 12:30 PM Eastern time through the link in the show notes. Attend the conference virtually to learn about ocean justice and the different aspects of what it means. Watch the conference live on YouTube to hear from speakers and participate in the forum where marginalized voices can be highlighted. Check out the Ocean Justice Forum to learn more about the movement and join the conversation. Support organizations that are working towards ocean justice, such as NRDC and the Pew Charitable Trust. Advocate for diversity and inclusion in the ocean conservation movement, especially at the leadership level. Take action to protect the ocean in your local community, such as supporting marine protected areas and sustainable fishing practices. Ocean Joy Justice in Action Ocean recreation is an often-overlooked component of ocean conservation. Activities such as surfing, diving, and exploring marine life offer more than just enjoyment; they create meaningful connections between people and the ocean environment, shaping the public's perception of the marine landscape and inspiring efforts to preserve and protect these waters. During the podcast, Anupa Asokan discusses her involvement in a panel about experiencing joy and fun in ocean activities and how these experiences can enhance one's everyday life. However, she also brings attention to the lack of representation of diverse ethnic backgrounds in these joyous encounters and the need to make these activities more inclusive. By expanding these opportunities to connect with the ocean for all, conservation efforts can encourage a truly diverse community that values and protects shared ocean environments. Every Coastline Needs a Hero Local heroes can play a crucial role in conservation efforts, contributing unique knowledge to the cause and mobilizing communities to work together. These individuals, deeply rooted in the areas they call home, can spearhead efforts to protect and preserve their coastal environments. They demonstrate a profound understanding of the challenges they face and are essential participants in developing sustainable solutions tailored to their community's needs. In the podcast, Angelo Villagomez and Anupa Asokan stress the importance of supporting local heroes, who can make substantial positive changes to their environment and influence meaningful progress in conservation. They encourage everyone to help uplift these local voices and recognize their talents and expertise in finding innovative ways to address conservation at the grassroots level. By emphasizing the importance of empowering local heroes the discussion highlights a vital aspect of making conservation initiatives more diverse and equitable. I spend a lot of time talking about the impact of low body confidence in women over 40 but what about the younger generation? How can we help support them and enable them to grow up without all the body image issues that our generation were handed down?  Do you worry about your child's body image?  Do you struggle to support them with their body image? Anupa Roper, a.k.a Sparrowlegs is a mum of two and in the last three years has transitioned from primary school teacher to children's author and body image educator. Anupa allowed her label of ‘skinny' to affect her choices and her feelings of worth for a long time. Now she wants to empower the next generations by helping them to feel happy in their own skin.  I asked Anupa how she would describe herself in 3 words and why? Kind - I would consider myself as a kind person, always putting others first and considering how my actions would make them feel. I like to think this is because it's a reflection of what I would wish others to be too  Talkative! My school reports always cited me as chatty, and I have to say that true - I love a natter. I'm super interested in what others have to say so I'm a good listener too  Just me - I'm a mixture of so many things that make me me. The work that I do involves me helping others to see that being ourselves, being unique, is okay because we are all great just the way that we are.  I had such an interesting talk with Anupa, and we so often hear body confidence conversations from the plus-size community, so it was refreshing to hear Anupa's perspective as a slimmer woman.  Anupa really does know how it feels to be uncomfortable in your own body. After spending years hating her ‘skinny' legs and ‘skinny' arms. She spent years being told how small she was and being questioned about whether she ate enough! Anupa has walked the path of being defined by her size and appearance and understands how to work towards having a better body image. She is passionate in wanting to support the next generations to do this too. My nickname at primary school was speck four eyes as I wore thick glasses and I hated them. I'm sure you can relate to how cruel young children can be to each other when it comes ot name calling. Anupa was called "Sparrowlegs" and has now now learnt to embrace her body and is owning the name.  Sparrowlegs is a beautifully illustrated book for under 7's about a sparrow who learns to love the feathers she is in. Sparrow embraces her amazing body and thinks that you should too! Women like Anupa are creating a positive ripple effect for future generation, and we all have a part to play. Being mindful of the language we use around our children, young adults and grandchildren can make a big difference to their mental wellbeing and how they grow feeling about their bodies. What does "Free to Be" mean to Anupa? "Free to Be happy in our own skin is how I would interpret that, both on the outside and inside too. We just need to learn to be comfortable with who we are and not feel the pressure to be anyone else." What does 'Free to Be' mean to you? Amen.
