The Joy of Performing Arts is the latest epsiode of the Business Awards Show, featuring award-winning Fiona da Silva Adams. Fiona set up Revolution Performing Arts seventeen years, and has made a huge contribution to the cultural life of Swindon's young people ever since. That contribution won her a Great British Business Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community She tells us how she came to running her own business later in life having had a successful corporate career in her twenties. But her passion for dance and performing arts saw her go to drama school, creating her own performing arts business. She also does much to support her community, a huge advocate of Swindon as a town, ensuring kids suffering from domestic abuse can enjoy the release of performing arts free of charge, and providing hot meals to under-privileged children. Fiona demonstrates how following your passion can transform your life. She is firmly among the schoool of thought that argues if you do what you're passionate about, you'll never work a day in your life. But she has also transformed the lives of hundreds of children who have loved the freedom dance and drama offers. This is a great episode for anyone thinking of moving away from a corporate career, at a crossroads in life. She explains the impact of awards, and the benefits of PR on building a business. Fiona Kong, an author and a single parent, joins Julia for a conversation about her book titled Home Sweet Homes Journal. Fiona's life underwent significant changes with divorce, a job loss, and the impact of the COVID pandemic. During this transformative period, Fiona took the opportunity to contemplate her upbringing and the kind of co-parent she aspired to become. During this period, the idea for the Home Sweet Homes Journal and Planner came to be. Fiona has devised a valuable resource that enables parents to support their children's transition between homes as well as to gain insight into their child's experiences while they spend time with the other parent. This episode is for any parent, no matter how you build your family. IN THIS EPISODE: [02:31] Fiona separates from her husband and loses her job in 2019, and she describes the grieving process [05:57] Instagram and co-parenting books helped Fiona transition through this challenging time [07:44] How to tell a two ½-year-old they will be spending time with mom and then time with dad and how a visual schedule helped [11:28] How Fiona and her ex-husband determined how they would co-parent, and after time, they admitted their contribution to the divorce [15:31] What drove Fiona to take responsibility for her part in their divorce and how her father fostered an unhealthy atmosphere when she was growing up [20:22] Fiona describes how she developed a planner to become a part of her son's life when he was not with her and how it evolved, and she shares different features of the book and tells about her next venture [32:13] What do you experience going from time with a child and partner 50 percent of the time to time alone with no child and no partner 50 percent of the time [36:28] Fiona discusses how mediation has helped her, and she discusses what family means to her KEY TAKEAWAYS: It's important to have a visual aide, like a schedule, to explain to a child how their week will unfold concerning visitation between parents. A divorced single parent should be aware of their child's mental health but should also take time for self-care. When divorced parents decide to work in the child's best interest, that contributes to a more regular upbringing for that child. RESOURCE LINKS: Stork'd - Facebook Stork'd - Instagram Stork'd- YouTube Home Sweet Home Journal and Planner - Website Home Sweet Home Journal and Planner - Facebook Home Sweet Home Journal - Instagram BIOGRAPHY: I'm Fiona Kong, founder of the Home Sweet Homes journal and planner for co-parents and children. I'm a single mom to a 5-year-old boy. I'm a former analyst turned dreamer turned creator and small business owner after finding a lack of resources and tools available to support young children after a separation or divorce. After my son's dad and I separated, I remember feeling so many things. I was stressed, anxious, and worried about my son adjusting to the constant back and forth between homes. I felt sad to miss out on my son's day-to-day life. And I also felt guilty for putting my son through this situation. And so, I looked for tools or products that could help those who co-parented but found few existing solutions - especially something geared toward young children. My mission through Home Sweet Homes is to help co-parents and their children stay connected while bringing a child comfort and joy across their two homes. By combining the benefits of a journal and planner into a tool that stays with your child, I hope to bring positivity out of a stressful and hard event.

We all know - and perhaps dabble with - not drinking during Dry January or Sober October but the rise of the “sober curious” movement over the last few years has really invited us to start the conversation about our relationship with alcohol and how we use it - and abuse it - across all aspects of life, from “mommy wine” culture to quarantine cocktails. When the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction released their updated alcohol guidelines earlier this year, it rocked a lot of people to their core. Even for me as a dietitian, who has long been quoting far more liberal guidelines in her education and practice, it's a sharp about face in how we advise others about what safe drinking looks like. Alcohol is deeply entrenched in our culture and so it can be difficult to accept the messaging that drinking isn't good for you…especially as many of us have feasted on past headlines (now debunked) that drinking has health benefits. …but this episode isn't about the science of alcohol (we'll have one, don't worry!). It's about the very personal conversations we have with ourselves and others about our alcohol use. I'm speaking with Fiona Hepher, Co-Founder of Sansorium, an alcohol free beverage business about her personal experience with alcohol and how not drinking has unlocked a new way of being (in addition to a new career!) for her and her family. This is also not a conversation about alcoholism. We both acknowledge the deep privilege we have in rethinking drinking habits without having to battle addiction. But it is an open and honest conversation about alcohol, how we relate to it in our lives and what different can look like. I hope you'll join us! About Fiona Hepher: Fiona is the CEO & Co-Founder of Sansorium, a North American alcohol-free beverage importer and consumer online marketplace. For the past decade, between Dubai and Vancouver, she's dedicated herself to disrupting social norms, helping people find meaningful change and greater wellbeing. Today, she's challenging traditions affixed by a multi-billion dollar industry and paving a new path; one where alcohol isn't at the centre of every occasion. She's also a mother, birth doula and aspiring writer. On this episode we chat about: The very defining moment that changed Fiona's perspective on alcohol forever Breaking with your family's - or culture's - drinking norms The unexpected self-work required when you release drinking Navigating the tricky territory of not drinking when others are drinking Coming to terms with the fact that alcohol is not good for you The ritual of a drink…and what to replace it with Mindful drinking vs sober-curious How Fiona created Sansorium with her mom and sister How we can be more inclusive party hosts Making the power of placebo work for you Support the Pod! Have you wondered if you or someone you know has Long COVID? It's VERY possible! As of 2023, the CDC estimates that 1 in 5 people, as many as 1 in 3 college students, and a preponderance of menopausal women who have had COVID still experience symptoms more than 3 months—or more—after being infected. Long COVID continues to impact the everyday lives of countless "long haulers" globally. On today's episode, I'm joined by journalist Fiona Lowenstein, an early and prominent voice in the Long COVID patient movement, who wrote the New York Times article that first blew the lid open on Long COVID. Fiona's story sheds light on the often-overlooked experiences of long haulers, highlights the need for greater awareness and understanding of the condition, and provides hope that healing can happen over time. We discuss: Fiona's experience as part of the first wave of people who got sick with COVID in NYC and how little the medical community knew how to help them The major gap between what COVID long-haulers are experiencing and medical testing Medical gaslighting, racism, homophobia, and how these systemic biases affect many people's abilities to get help The similarities between Long COVID and chronic fatigue syndrome and the realities of post-viral illnesses The effects of Long COVID from mental health challenges to neurological issues, chronic fatigue, POTS, and more. How Fiona's started their online peer support group and how this group helps other COVID long-haulers What Fiona wishes people who don't have Long COVID knew about living with the illness and the change they wish to see in the medical community If you or a loved one is dealing with Long COVID or another invisible illness, I hope that this podcast offers hope, empowerment, and support. Please send this to someone who needs reassurance that they are not alone, or a friend, to help them better understand the realities of chronic invisible disease. Thank you for taking the time to tune in to your body, yourself, and this podcast! Born and raised in Ukraine, professional diversiculturalist Dr. Fiona Citkin came to the US as a Fulbright Scholar studying languages and cultures at Kent State University, OH. Fiona’s first book was on language/translation (Terminology and Translation, Lviv, Vischa Shkola, 1988, in Russian) and it brought her recognition in European academia. For the book “Transformational Diversity: Why and How Intercultural Competencies Can Help Organizations to Survive and Thrive” (SHRM Publishing, 2011), Fiona has been recognized as a Top 2012 Champion of Diversity by diversitybusiness.com, a think-tank. This book was a seminal stepping stone for further exploration of the diverse American culture and the real-world ways to instill inclusion. Fiona’s new book, “How They Made It in America”, started with a desire to explore how diverse talented individuals make it big in America. She focused on prominent women immigrants as the book subjects—just because she knew from her own experiences that women face frequent tribulations on their way to success. The topic appeared so rich that it soon became clear she’ll need to write a book series to at least solidly scratch it. Since April 2013, Fiona’s monthly Huffington Post column explores the issues of multicultural women and what it takes to make it in America: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/fiona-citkin-phd/. It was Arianna Huffington (an immigrant from Greece) who invited Fiona to blog there, build the future readership, and see how the public responds to the issues covered. And Arianna’s insights made her a perfect role model for Fiona. With experience as Director of Berlitz, FGI, and a personal consulting portfolio with major corporations, Fiona accumulated skills in public speaking, marketing, coaching, training, magazine and TV interviews, entrepreneurship, and of course, intercultural communication and languages. Fiona speaks three languages: English, Russian, and Ukrainian. After living and working in Europe (Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, Austria, Great Britain, and Switzerland) she now resides in Warren, NJ, USA, and can be reached at fiona@fionacitkin.com. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Fiona first came to the United States under a Fulbright scholarship 25 years ago, and how her unique perspective as a female immigrant has informed her work How Fiona transitioned from teaching in Ukraine to becoming a consultant in the United States, and how her career took a “downgrade” when she immigrated How women immigrants often have to start over regardless of their professional background in their nations of origin How immigrant men and women share common challenges like language barriers, and how women experience additional challenges like sexual harassment and the glass ceiling Fiona shares her advice for practitioners looking to create a more welcoming, inclusive and equitable workplace for immigrant employees What important topics and lessons Fiona discussed in her book, and how human resources professionals can help strengthen a diverse, inclusive and equitable environment Why offering new skills to immigrant employees is only the first step, and why creating a safe and welcoming environment is the other critical part of the equation Why having an exit strategy is vital, and why understanding the immigrant experience during these difficult times is critical Fiona shares her perspective on the growing sense of nationalism and hostility toward immigrants, both in the United States and globally What wisdom Fiona would share for new immigrants before they enter the workplace in their new home country Additional resources: How They Made It in America by Fiona Citkin: https://amzn.to/2YiCHGN The Bridge: Women Worldwide YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCtnjxZ7nqAi83I-EHOqdVlw Website: http://fionacitkin.com/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/fiona-citkin-b7416310/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/FionaCitkinAuthor/ Twitter: @FionaCitkin

If there was ever a formula to follow in returning to work after a long career gap, I think Fiona Haynes has it mastered. Past Work Experience + Side Hustle + Connection = Job She had impressive work experience with The Economist. She took a job writing for About.com in the early Internet days. And she had a connection that introduced her to the company where she works today as a Financial Editor. The resume by itself might not work, but it's powerful when you combine it with the other elements. In this episode you’ll hear: How Fiona found her way into a media job even after missing an opportunity with Reuters and ending up in Library Science. How she negotiated a remote and international opportunity with The Economist. Why she got a 6 month maternity leave while living in the United States. How a connection led to a side hustle as a freelance writer that gave her flexibility when her children were school age. How volunteering was a good outlet during a personally difficult time How a connection led to a full time job How she uses her English accent to her advantage at work About the challenges to remote work www.readypausego.com

Episode 16 of the Plant Proof Podcast with Vegan Marathon Runner Fiona Oakes talking about her path to becoming a marathon runner who holds 3 world records Fiona Oakes is a British Marathon runner who holds three world records despite losing her knee cap (patella) to an illness when she was 17. The really fascinating thing about Fiona's story for me is not that she has holds these records but that among a non vegetarian family she personally chose to eat a vegetarian diet at age 3 and a completely vegan diet by age 6 due to her undeniable love for all animals. After school Fiona held an office job in London before eventually starting an animal sanctuary in Essex which still exists today and provides a loving home to over 400 animals. Between marathon running and the sanctuary Fiona puts every last bit of her energy into raising awareness for animal cruelty and showing the world that veganism is not only a compassionate way to live but a healthy way which can fuel you to achieve amazing athletic performance beyond your wildest dreams. In this episode we cover: Why Fiona made a conscious decision at such an early age to not eat animals Fiona's struggles with her knee in her teenage years How Fiona was 'different' to many of her peers growing up Her early career in London and how the animal sanctuary came to life Her typical routine at the animal sanctuary and how she trains for marathons Whether she actually loves running or simply runs for the animals What Fiona eats and much much more Connect with Fiona: @oakes.fiona on Instagram Play now: REVIEW/SHARE: If you enjoyed the episode and have a spare 1-2 minutes please leave a review on iTunes so the Plant Proof podcast ranks higher and becomes more discoverable for other listeners. Download Episode! Hey, lovely radicals... podcast time! In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I talk to Sarah Harry from Melbourne, Australia. Sarah is a psychotherapist, yoga teacher, researcher, writer and university lecturer. As a leading body image and eating disorders specialist and experienced clinician she has a refreshing perspective on bodies, weight, movement and inclusivity. Sarah was the first yogi in Australia to offer yoga for bigger bodies. She has practiced yoga for more than 20 years, and as the owner and founder of "Fat Yoga", she runs specialist classes and retreats. She is also co-director of "Body Positive Australia" (alongside Fiona Sutherland, whom I interviewed in episode 28). Sarah is a member of the Yoga and Body Image Coalition USA, sits on the National Advisory Board of Health at Every Size Australia and she is a member of the National Eating Disorders Coalition. Listen in as Sarah tells us: – How Fiona and herself started working together, and how "Body Positive Australia" came into existence – Where they both see the problem with the term "Body Positivity", and how it’s being co-opted – Why there are opportunities to help change the system from the inside – How she aims to get her message across in interviews – Why authenticity and humor have helped her a great deal – How she decided to show up in regards to her own personal family story – What readers of "Fat Yoga" tell her they are most thankful for – What she remembers about growing up in a body that was different from what her parents believed was "a good body" – How her 20-year-long quest to be thin started, and what it cost her – Why she never told anyone about her raging eating disorder – How her body hate led her to have various surgeries and why she believed the massive pain those caused her was "the punishment for being bigger" – Why she would NEVER recommend weight-loss-surgery to anyone – At what point she started to turn her life around – Why she hit the jackpot with the person she ended up working with – Why yoga is often misunderstood in the west, and what it’s really about – Why she works on bringing more "real" yoga to the field of recovery – How she called out "The Yogi Times" on their weight-stigmatizing articles – Why people react with anger when their beliefs, that they were invested in for so long, are challenged – When and how to address people’s weight-biases, and what reactions to expect – Why "body love" can be a misleading and overwhelming term, and why "body acceptance" or "body neutrality" can be much more helpful – Why Instagram (and social media in general) are intensifying people’s focus on bodies and appearances, and what she has to say about that – Why there are people who dislike the term "all bodies are good bodies"... ...
