Food "Maybe something I wouldn't often have... Flavours... Colours... Maybe Thai or Asian?" Alexandra responded. I absolutely love cooking Asian food, so after a little research to get inspiration, I decided to cook Thai green coconut curry with salmon. The fish delivery arrived on the morning of filming, so it was beautiful and fresh. I used as many greens as I could to make this curry vibrant with colours and flavours. I was pleased to hear that Alexandra would attempt to cook this dish when she is visiting her relative in Asia a few weeks later. It turned out delicious! Cath is a London based trauma-informed Integrative Psychotherapist, lecturer, and host of the podcast Grow Yourself Up. She is a mother of twin girls and started her practice; Psychotherapy Mum after feeling blindsighted by her own experience of motherhood.  Cath's work is focused on supporting those who are healing their own childhood trauma and specifically, her expertise is in the emotional journey of parents who did not have their needs met in childhood.  In today's episode Cath tells us about her own ongoing journey with releasing control and leaning into imperfection. Cath also talks about how she managed her breaking point at 10 months post-partum; childhood trauma and how it shapes us; the lifelong work of building self compassion through reparenting; and how vulnerability has become her greatest strength.  This is a very open, raw, and generous conversation, and I am so grateful to Cath for gifting this to us. A dream she had always had, offering a hub of therapeutic & holistic support to people of all ages.In this episode, we talk about:Shelley's incredible story of finding herself in hospital with a sudden collapsed lung to creating Sunrise WellbeingHow Shelley literally use to be scared of confident people, and why she feared themWhat Shelley's role as a Psychotherapist is and isn't, and how parts of her work supports her clients to show up more confidently in the worldShelley takes us back in time and shares her journey of developing her confidence, and how earlier in her life she didn't even have the confidence to put her hand up to answer a questionThe importance of having our needs met when we are young and critically the importance of being allowed to show our emotions openly without judgment or fearShelley shares that in her experience confidence can sometimes be a mask that people wear in order to protect themselves The mental impact the pandemic appears to have had on us as a species and the potentially lasting effects it has had on individuals confidenceWe discuss the idea of not having to, “fix things” and instead just making yourself available Our brains only believe what they hear, and how important this concept is in terms of developing our confidenceHow important evidence is, and that deliberately looking for evidence is a key component when developing one's confidence We ask Shelley to give her thoughts on the question, If we had no fear, would we all have as much confidence as we want? How emotions “feel” and why this is such a crucial part of the work Shelley does Shelley's journey and story are fascinating and inspirational, to say the least. Yet another episode that has so much knowledge and value. As hosts, we continue to learn, develop and grow with each new guest we have the pleasure of sitting with. Welcome to another episode of SWM.   We have a lovely interview with Integrative Psychotherapist Delores McPherson. I met Delores when I attended one of her support groups for 'Black Mature Women' aka BMW.  Delores shares aspects of her career and her current therapeutic work with young people in receipt of Youth Offending Services (YOS). Delores also has a private practice and undertakes consultancy work.  In today's interview, she shares thoughts on the value of self-care and the perils of self-neglect.  She speaks about how she needed to take time out to look after herself and now makes self-care central to her emotional health and wellbeing.  She also shares some tips on how we might manage our professional boundaries more effectively in relation to our demanding roles. Delores has embarked on supporting Black Mature Women and in the new year has exciting plans to offer Black men a safe space to share and express themselves and their issues - on Thursday 11th Feb 2021 Delores and her colleague Tony will facilitate a virtual 6-week group programme entitled 'Black Men real talk'. When Dance Movement psychotherapy (DMP) was first documented in the 1940s, it was based on Harry Stack Sullivan's interpersonal psychiatry, C. G. Jung's active imagination and the principles of expressive modern dance and dance theatre. DMP is a therapy modality committed to discovering the cultural and social benefits of individual and collective human creativity and does so with the use of movement, improvisation, symbolism, imagination and movement analysis. Drawing from her own innovative bridging between DMP and body psychotherapies, contemporary humanistic psychotherapies and relational psychoanalysis, Sissy will explore with you both the practice and the theory of non-verbal dialogue via the expressive use of our bodies and movement. Working with movement and the body introduces vital new ways of thinking and acting into a situation. So, when it comes to feelings of frustration because one cannot find the ‘right words', because logos (the word) is not adequate to carry matters forward, there is a place for ideas such as bodily expression, rhythm, integration, cohesion, body symbolism and synchrony. Sissy Lykou is a Dance Movement Psychotherapist in private practice, and a Lecturer in Psychotherapy and Counselling at Regents University in London. She lectures on several university and professional training programmes in the UK and Europe, and has worked on EU research projects at the Universities of Heidelberg and Athens. Initially Sissy trained as a dancer before injury intervened. She then undertook trainings as a Counselling Psychologist, Dance Movement Psychotherapist, and Integrative Psychotherapist. Alongside her work as a lecturer and clinician, she has been developing innovative therapeutic-educational projects for under 5s and their parents and carers in children's centres in London. Sissy has published in books and international journals, and is the co-editor of the book ‘Trauma in the Creative and Embodied Therapies: When Words Are Not Enough' by Routledge. What is gaslighting syndrome and how does the term "coercive control" play a part in it? Join your favorite podcast guest, Christine Louis de Canonville, as we discuss her newest book The Gaslighting Syndrome. In “The Gaslighting Syndrome” Christine Louis de Canonville (a mental health professional) demystifies the phenomenon of “Gaslighting”. Gaslighting is a dangerous form of psychological abuse and coercive control that is akin to “Intimate Terrorism”, and anybody can become a target. In "The Gaslighting Syndrome", The reader is taken inside the mind of some of the darkest intimate terrorists that live amongst us. This book is essential reading for anybody struggling in an emotionally abusive relationship (i.e. in the home, the workplace, or a friendship) and cannot figure out exactly what is happening. If you do not understand the pathological narcissist with their “Gaslighting” behaviour, how are you ever going to recognise their manipulative psychological and emotional abuse that will rob you of your identity? Furthermore, if you are a victim, when are you to know when it is time to break free of their deadly Ambient Abuse and Coercive Control?Christine Louis de Canonville is a licensed psychotherapist and clinical supervisor living in Dublin, Ireland. She is also an author, a professional trainer, and international speaker, a lecturer, workshop facilitator and external examiner. She has worked in the area of mental health and trauma recovery for the last 28 years, providing psychotherapy to children and adults for a range of life issues, including Addictive Behaviours, Anxiety, Anger, and Relational Issues. For 5 years, she worked in the Trauma Unit of St. Brendan’s Psychiatric Hospital under the watchful eye of the eminent Professor Ivor Browne. In 1995 she set-up her own private clinical practice where she now specialises in Narcissistic Abuse Recovery. Her life as a “care-giver” started in earnest when she was 23, and it was both a painful and magnificent adventure through both Western and Eastern paradigm of thought. Her philosophy of life is that every great artist uses a palate of many colours to bring their canvas to life, and this is true of any effective therapist. Her palate is made-up of many disciplines, from Psychology, Medical Anthropology, Philosophy, Sociology, Criminology, Criminal Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Metaphysics, Spirituality, Theology, and more. All these disciplines are wonderfully compatible to the life of any Psychotherapist.Christine works primarily as a Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapist, where she incorporates a Person Centred Approach, utilizing a range of modalities (Western & Eastern) where appropriate. This is a seamless way of working with the whole person, not just on a mental, emotional, and physical level, but also at a spiritual/soul level of the self. She grew up with an older psychopathic brother from childhood. Unfortunately, due to her early conditioning, she found herself re-experiencing victimisation during her adult life by three other narcissists (2 females and 1 male). About 12 years ago, she began Criminology Studies, and she became very interested in Psychopathy, which is the study of The Dark Triad (the classical narcissist, malignant narcissist, and the psychopath). In 1995 she set-up her own private clinical practice where she now specializes in Narcissistic Abuse Recovery. All these disciplines are wonderfully compatible to the life of any Psychotherapist.Christine works primarily as a Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapist, where she incorporates a Person Centered Approach, utilizing a range of modalities (Western & Eastern) where appropriate. She is also a qualified accredited Psychotherapist, Clinical Supervisor, Master NLP Practitioner, Master of Clinical Hypnosis, Life, Business & Executive Coach, Spiritual Director, Shamanic Counselor, Curandera Practitioner, and Transpersonal Therapist.Since qualifying, she has been a member of many accredited Boards and is a Member of the Irish Association of Counselors & Psychotherapists. Christine is also a trained and accredited Psycho-Spiritual Psychotherapist: Throughout the years, she was also going through personal spiritual development. True to form, her quest for “truth” was to take her to visit many places. She did her fieldwork study (for her Master’s Degree in Medical Anthropology) with indigenous Shamans from Native American Sioux Indians, to Peruvian, Bolivian, European, Celtic, and Mexican shamans. She also studied comparative religions, and to her surprise, she became a Theologian. For many years, she worked with Emaho, an American Indian from New Mexico, who challenged her to see life through “Life’s Eyes” rather than through the eyes of the personality. Her journey also saw her apprenticed to Eloxochitl, a Curandera Teacher in the Medicina Mexihka Tradition (Mexican Shaman). In 2006, Christine was honoured as a Curandera and a Warrior Woman when she was given the Native American Indian name of “Cihuatequiani”, which means “Woman Who Works”.It has been part of her life’s work to integrate these two ways of knowing (Western Behavioural Psychology with Eastern Consciousness Psychology) into an Integral Transpersonal Therapy. She completed her post-graduate diplomas in both Forensic Psychology and Criminal Psychology.Having done her own recovery work, Christine became the “Wounded Healer”. She decided to specialize in helping other people in their recovery from toxic relationships, especially those who had been victims of pathological narcissistic abuse. She became a published author of The Three Faces of Evil: Unmasking the full spectrum of narcissistic abuse, and has gone on to publish two more books on the subject of narcissistic abuse. She appeared in the popular Television Documentary – Evil: A Would You Believe? Special – as a mental health expert (with other experts) speaking on the subject of Evil. Many of her articles have featured in major online magazines and professional Journals. She was a guest on various international radio shows (i.e. Ireland, America, Canada, England, and Sweden). She was the keynote speaker for the IACP at the first Professional Mental Health Conferences in Dublin, and she was a guest speaker on the 1st World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day Summit (WNAAD).She started the “Roadshow for Therapists”, where she travelled throughout the Four Provence’s of Ireland with her training workshops for mental health professionals on narcissistic personality disorder, and the effects of narcissistic abuse on the victims. She is the founder of narcissisticbehavior.net that has readership from all over the world. Part of her advocacy work is to provide a blog for furnishing information about the different facets of narcissistic personality disorder and narcissistic victim abuse.
