90's rave culture had a massive impact on the techno scene. And one particular artist, DJ MISJAH, was making huge moves across it. Launching his own imprint, X-TRAX RECORDS, which showcased his unique style of TECHNO and ACID TECHNO, he became a household name. With some incredible productions, an extensive remix catalogue and one of the best live DJ sets at the time, DJ MISJAH was a force. If you were lucky enough to catch one of his sets, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Sadly, MISJAH retired from DJing quite some ago, but he's still keeping his ears tuned to quality with his mastering services, so, definitely check out his studio below. Tracklisting: 01. Chicago house pioneer Vince Lawrence and law professor Dr. Olufunmilayo Arewa unpack how record companies have undermined Black musicians—and what we can do to enact change. This past week, Resident Advisor screened and distributed a new, award-winning documentary called Taking Back the Groove. It tells the story of Bronx-born disco legend Richie Weeks, whose song "Rock Your World" with Weeks & Co. climbed to #1 on the dance charts in the '80s. Like many Black artists throughout American recording history, his talent was strip-mined to enrich corporate record labels. In the film, Weeks and Still Music label owner Jerome Derradji narrate the story of how they clawed back the rights to Weeks's tracks, as well as the ongoing battle he's had to wage to restore his legacy and ownership over his creative work. This story is, sadly, perennial, especially for artists of colour and otherwise marginalised musicians who continue to be sidelined by major players in the music industry. In this RA Exchange, Vince Lawrence—a Chicago-based house producer and the original founder of Trax Records—speaks with Washington DC-based guest Dr. Funmi Arewa, a graduate of Harvard Law School and UC Berkeley, and a current professor at George Mason University, where she teaches business law in the creative industries. The two engage in a fascinating discussion about the history of the recording industry and the exploitation of marginalised artists that runs through its fabric. How do we make it easier for artists to claim things that are rightfully theirs? What if we could create incentives to create fairness at the core of how record labels function? Listen to their thoughts on these questions in the full episode.

Welcome back guys, here on ESOA Podcast. Unfortunately, once again my guest for this episode cancelled just before the end. This immediately inspired me to record a musical special for you. I decided on a Chicago House and Techno special. Alongside Detroit, Chicago is clearly an important cornerstone. Without it, techno and house would not exist in their current form. Think about the impact that tracks like Move your Body or Acid Tracks still have today. Frankie Knuckles began playing early electronic productions back in 1977 in the then newly opened, rather run-down but well-equipped Warehouse club. A sound that continued to develop into later house and techno, with great, unforgotten names such as Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Tyree Cooper, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Frankie Knuckles, Steve "Silk" Hurley, DJ Pierre, Phuture, Mike Dunn, K-Alexi Bad Boy Bill, "Fast" Eddie Smith, Ron Hardy and Derrick Carter made history. The sound was released on labels such as DJ International, Dance Mania, Jack Trax, Underground Records and Trax Records. Friends, let this sound inspire you for the next two and a half hours. Have fun with ESOA Podcast 072 by myself, Thomas Schubert. Thanks for tuning in. Your Body, Can You Feel it?, Your Love, etc. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ TYREE COOPER #034 - PART 1 Tyree Cooper the awesome super dupa producer, grew up in Chicago, starting out as a top Basketball Player but left to focus on music producing and Djing. Tyree began working with Mike Dunn but after a disagreement they initially parted ways but reunited at an event called Earthquake for freestyle battles which attracted over 500 people to the shows, packing out the club and the overspill of revelers took to partying on the streets outside. In the years of 1984 till 1986 these were Tyree's most prominent production years. Chicago House music was his vibe and Tyree became a legend on the drum machine Roland TR-808. Tyree was turning out 4 tracks per night whilst continuing to work during the day, he worked 12 hours per night in the studio. Tyree was signed to DJ International Records and they would pay him $50 per drum beats and was even told by Larry Sherman of Trax Records that his music sucked! All of the tracks he produced were credited to Rocky Jones and all of his tracks according to management were not selling. Little did Tyree know that he had produced some huge hits but was never truly informed. Luckily for Tyree his hit record contracts were just 2 years long so to this day, he actually owns most of his music.

Recorded by @lady-fingers Faire Mauvais Genre at @quanticaonline. Lady Fingers is one of those phenomenal midwest bred figures who has cultivated a lengthy rave resume as an artist, producer, and event organizer. Lady Fingers has released on the pivotal Chicago label Trax Records, including a remix of the quintessential house track by Chuck Roberts entitled “In the Beginning.” She also has multiple vinyl releases on the womxn-centric, Berlin based label called Sound Warrior. As a promoter, she's organized everything from Belearic-inspired parties, to breaks parties, to dub techno events, to 80s synth-funk nights. A party host ad nauseum, and loving every minute of it!
In Part 2 of the Lockdown Recap, Marleah is here to discuss the EDM scene in NYC (and tips for finding where to go in your own city if you’re not from around here), with Gregory Gelfand and Jenya Taran of Mindgazm, a local NYC DJ act she got to see twice over the past month, who also add live instruments and visuals to their sets, for a full electronic dance experience. In this conversation, we talk about the duo’s transition from band to genre-fusing EDM act, the expanded sonic palette (how we love this phrase) electronic music lends itself to, the future of melodic dance music, the 20 year NYC music cycle, how DJs are leading the charge in the NYC music scene (Marleah is a little tough on bands here, sorry), what the underground looks like, and how “you really can’t stop people from being tribal”. Plus, a How Was It For You? discussion, where Marleah finds out what the Mindgazm set she saw was like for them (Greg is ok with a little unexpected B2B!). A 1 Hour special with only the best classics made by 2 man or 1 label! Trax Records was an important outlet for house music in its early days, releasing many classics including "No Way Back" by Adonis (1986), Jamie Principle & Frankie Knuckles's "Your Love" (1988), Larry Heard's "Can You Feel It" (1986), and Marshall Jefferson's "The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body)" in the same year. This latter tune gave a massive boost to house music, extending recognition of the genre outside of Chicago. **FOLLOW US FOR OLDSKOOL AT:** https://hearthis.at/oldskool/ http://instagram.com/oldskooltrax http://youtube.com/oldskooltrax **FOR 80's & DISCOHOUSE MIXES:** http://hearthis.at/djthaman

Larry Sherman (RIP) finally gets busted. On Tuesday June 23, 2020, attorneys Robert S. Meloni and Christopher M. Heintskill filed suit in Federal Court in the Northern District of Illinois alleging Trax Records has committed copyright infringement for tracks including “Can You Feel It,” “Washing Machine,” “Beyond The Clouds,” “Bring Down The Walls,” “Donnie,” “Distant Planet” and “Never No More Lonely.” “This case involves an all-too familiar story of the early days of the music industry,” the complaint reads. “Talented, but unrepresented, musicians hungry for their first break were lulled into a business relationship with an unscrupulous record company that made promises it never intended to keep and masqueraded as paternalistic benefactors for those artists – like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/freakbeats-edm-podcast/message

We have Marshall Jefferson, Chicago House DJ legend, in the podcast house. A bit different this episode; as I chat to Marshall about how he took chances and opportunities to pursue his passion for music. And we talk about how we met, and the great things that can happen when you give help to strangers. Get social with Another Door on facebook https://www.anotherdoor.co.uk About Marshall Jefferson Sometimes known as the father of house music, Jefferson was originally a record producer in the Universal Recording Studios in Chicago, where he met the owner of Trax Records, Larry Sherman. Jefferson's 1986 single for Trax, "Move Your Body (The House-Music Anthem), - the first house song to use piano, was a popular and influential song in the genre. During the late-1980s heyday of house music he recorded solo and collaborative material under various names such as Virgo, Jungle Wonz, Truth, and On The House. Jefferson's deep house productions include songs by CeCe Rogers and Sterling Void, and Ten City's first two albums. "Move Your Body" appeared in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on house-music radio station SF-UR. This song also appeared in Michael Winterbottom's film 24 Hour Party People and in the 1991 documentary film Paris is Burning. (Source Wiki)

Southern California singer/songwriter Alice Wallace’s new album, Into the Blue, to be released this week on Rebelle Road Records, is pure California country. Her fourth album, it harks back to the 70’s artists like Joni and Jackson Brown who did not have all the answers but knew how to sing the questions. Folky, romantic, soulful, and always melodic, Alice is eclectic Americana, organic, probing but understanding and often topical. Winner of an LA MUSIC CRITIC Award, Alice has performed at LA’s legendary country venue the Palomino Club, as well as many others in her average 200-gigs year. The album marks her debut on the brand-new Rebelle Road label, an imprint founded by a trio of women dedicated to strengthening the California Country music community and expanding visibility for female artists in the Americana/roots genre. Screamin’ Rachael – Rachael Cain -- named the “Queen of House Music” by Billboard Magazine, was the first house artist to sign a major label deal. She launched the Hip House sound when she recorded Fun with Bad Boys with Afrika Bambaataa and has collaborated with artists including Bambaataa, Marshall Jefferson, Colonel Abrams, Grandmaster Melle Mel. An early signer to and now President of Trax Records, Rachael returns to her strong Chicago alternative roots with Don’t Make Me Lonely while working on the production with Van Christie of Die Warzau. She released a new single I Am House, and celebrated the release of the soundtrack to new film series, The Vamp Bikers Trilogy, which Cain coordinated and appears on and which includes the original “Boom Boom” from TRAX, source of friction with Kayne West for his sampling.

TDS Radio is excited for October, and it has nothing to do with the celebration of Columbus Day [sic], and everything to do with our featured guest! XL8R magazine called this month's guest one of Chicago's top 10 DJs...and considering how thumping with the techno Chicago's been over the last couple of years (and on the longer scale, in general), that's quite the accolade. We're flattered and super excited to have Hiroko Yamamura on the show! ***Featured set*** 11pm: Hiroko Yamamura B2B w/ DJ Ry-N Trax Records | Apollo Music Group Technology and exploration are at the roots of Hiroko’s core. Equally enthralled by the beat and the machines generating them, her sound is an homage to every circuit, resistor, patch cord and application that brings voice and inspiration to her work. Her gothic and industrial roots are evident in her music, as well as her punk rock DIY drive. Taking inspiration from classic science fiction and dark anime, Hiroko’s studio can often be confused for a booth at a comic convention. Currently calling labels such as Trax Records, Impact Mechanics, Slap Jaxx and Klectik as home, she just recently returned from a long hiatus from music. Her previous projects under the Bio-Booster and as a member of Monologic have not ceased, however they have taken a back seat to a more focused techno vision. As a midwest rave staple, Hiroko has toured the globe spreading the sounds of Chicago including gigs at the famed Detroit Movement Festival as well as regular Berlin and Ibiza shows. Hiroko currently calls clubs such as Spybar and Soundbar home. She actively contributes jacking Chicago techno with an edge all its own, along with her like-minded colleagues and collaborators including Heartthrob, Seth Troxler, Hyperactive, Angel Alanis, Kate Simko and the Submerge. Find out why XLR8R named her one of Chicago’s top 10 DJs. ***Opening set*** 10pm: Franktronic (Frank H. Payne) Noisefloor - Chicago | Techno Delivery Systems

Berlin-based dj and techno producer savas pascalidis has been steadily making his mark in underground electronic music circles since his first releases in the mid-90s. He runs his own label sweatshop and spins at various clubs worldwide. Enthralled by the music of labels like Prelude, Westend, Salsoul, Rams Horn, DJ International, Trax Records in the early 80s, he started to collect and spin records from Hip Hop, Electro, Rare Grooves, Disco, Funk, Hi-NRG, Acid, House, Rave, EBM and Techno through the 90’s and he has spent all his life exploring all facets of underground dance music Born in south germany and later moved to berlin, the well-traveled DJ has been among the restless and classically minded members of the dance music community over the last decades. Rooted in the pioneering techno innovations and influenced by the likes of Underground Resistance, 430 West. KMS, Relief, Dance Mania, Metroplex, Jeff Mills, DBX, Robert Hood, Joey Beltram and many more he developed skills that led him into producing records and made a name for himself since the mid ’90s Techno scene with a series of dark, loopy and groove driven dancefloor orientated techno music. Pure and simple. But above all he is a DJ, transformed by music, passionate about the crowd.. Yet he is also a discoverer of old and new sounds, and has an rich musical culture. His releases earned him a reputation for being something of a dance music purist. With his over 25 years experience of playing and collecting records, with a huge vinyl collection of approximately more than 25,000 Records, his sets comprise a wide range of the most important currents electronic music went through over the last 25 years. His energetic sets are based on classic hypnotic US-techno, deep and heavy grooves with a touch of stronger non-vocal house tracks. Another example of his DJ integrity is the fact that he still prefering the qualities of vinyl and has never played any kind of music in digital form Throughout a career spanning many decades he has worked to main-tain a constant flow of creativity within the house and techno sphere. Never losing focus, he never prepare any sets upfront and everything is decided at the venue to keep everything interesting , organic and never really the same. He is one of those DJ’s who just plays what he likes the most and would like to hear himself being on a dancefloor. As with his productions, his strength as a DJ is his versatility. Depending on the night and the crowd, he can throw down various styles of T echno.Stylistically, he never limited himself to any sub genre, instead, he constantly looked out for new ways of expressing himself Savas Pascalidis has released and remixed music on respected labels such as Gigolo Records, Kurbel, Non Series, Mote Evolver, Stockholm LTD, Children of Tommorow, Skudge, Figure and many more. There are few who can claim to have been as active and dedicated to the progression of dance and electronic music as that of the Chicago based producer, label boss and disc jockey Mystic Bill. The revered producer maintains a low profile but has lived through some of the most interesting and progressive periods within dance music culture. From the glory days of Chicago and Detroit to the present he has observed with a watchful eye, taking in music with a keen sense of intrigue and a solitary sense of thought. As a producer he has released on the likes of Trax Records, Relief and Crimes of the Future. He has recently launched a new label inspired by the early days of The Musik Box and Ron Hardy - Gavin Guthrie was the first artist enlisted to appear.

"What About this Love" Larry Heard (born 1960, Chicago, Illinois) is a DJ, record producer and musician, widely known for the Chicago-based house music he produced during the mid-1980s and continues to produce today. He was a leader of the influential group Fingers Inc.and has recorded solo under various names, most notably Mr. Fingers. "Move Your Body ". Marshall Jefferson (born, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American musician, working in house music, in particular, the subgenres of Chicago house and deep house. Sometimes known as the father of house music, Jefferson was originally a record producer in the Universal Recording Studios in Chicago, where he met the owner of Trax Records, Larry Sherman. Jefferson's 1986 single for Trax, "Move Your Body (The House-Music Anthem)," the first house song to use piano, was a popular and influential song in the genre. S'Express (pronounced ess-express; sometimes spelt S'Xpress or S-Express; otherwise known as Victim of the Ghetto) were a British dance music act from the late 1980s, who had one of the earliest commercial successes in the acid house genre. "Theme from S'Express", based on Rose Royce's "Is It Love You're After", was also one of the earliest recordings to capitalize on a resurgence of sampling Steve Hurley, produced a cover of "I Can't Turn Around" by Isaac Hayes, which sold well in the Chicago. Before Hurley could arrange to have the record licensed for overseas distribution, Farley managed to attach his own name to a European release of a slightly altered version of Hurley's track. The new version, "Love Can't Turn Around" by Farley "Jackmaster" Funk (vocals by Darryl Pandy), which reached #10 in the UK Singles Chart in 1986 "Your Love" Francis "Frankie" Nicholls (1955 – March 31, 2014), better known by his stage name Frankie Knuckles, was an American DJ, record producer and remixer. He played an important role in developing and popularizing house music in Chicago during the 1980s. In 1982, Knuckles was introduced to then-unknown Jamie Principle by mutual friend Jose "Louie" Gomez, who had recorded the original vocal-dub of "Your Love" to reel-to-reel tape. Louie Gomez met up with Frankie at the local record pool (I.R.S.) and gave him a tape copy of the track. Knuckles played Gomez's unreleased dub mix for an entire year in his sets during which it became a crowd favourite. Knuckles later went into the studio to re-record the track with Principle, and in 1987 helped put Your Love Adonis – "No Way Back" (1987) Adonis was 19 years old when he made the dystopian classic "No Way Back," one of Chicago house music's most iconic tracks. "No Way Back" was a smash hit for the Trax label; according to some estimates, the single sold over 100,000 copies. The lyrics made "No Way Back" sound effortlessly cool, and utterly terrifying. The stripped-down track, devoid of extraneous flourishes, still sounds ruthlessly modern. Kariya - “Baby Let Me Love You For Tonight” Originally released in 1988, 'Baby Let Me Love You For Tonight' has long been regarded a club classic. Next up on the FMB mixes is another homegrown favourite BUBBA, presenting his Soundtraxx mix. Collaborations with Timmy Stewart as Bubba & T-Bone seen release’s on labels Get the Curse, Elevation, Mode Music and Tom Budden’s Alive imprint and have seen big support fromt he likes of Ivan Smagghe, Ewan Pearson, Ricardo Villalobos, Laurent Garnier and Solomun to name a few. With a release on the unparalleled Trax Records coming in the new year amongst other things we though this would be the perfect time to catch up…so take it away BUBBA. The late 70’s and early 80’s is a period that seems to hold a real fascination for me in movies and music. It was a period of new technology and computers influencing music and movies like Blade Runner, Alien, Star Wars, Escape from New York, Westworld stimulating my imagination of future visions. This combined with the electronic music of Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Human League soundtracks of John Carpenter moulded my love for an electronic sound which always inspires me. And I’m still discovering music from that era of disco early house, italo, electronica and pop from artists such as Tangerine Dream, Klause Schulze, Telex, Egyptian Lover, The The and more. I put together this 2 hr mix of new discoveries, old reedits, new trax, movie samples and some of my own, I guess it’s the sort of music I imagine that was getting played at the Technoir night club in the Terminator just before Arnie turned up and ruined the party! Meticulously assembled then recorded down onto cassette, London producer Matt Whitehead reworks and splices together his two 30-minute sets from this year's Bloc Weekend (one performance being at Brackout, the tribute to the much-missed Ben Bracket that kickstarted the festval). Along with material released collaboratively as Cyantific and Signal Type, Matt has two essential electro 12"s out under his own name for London's Rebel Intelligence collective. Like his set from 2010's Bloc Weekend, this is the real deal. Play it loud. A nonstop Hard-House Mega Mix from the 2Fonzanoons featuring some rare gems from the ‘80s & ‘90s era including records from Chicago’s own Jasper Stone, Underground Construction (UC Music), International House Records (IHR), Trax Records, Dance Mania, et al.
In the beginning, there was Jack, and Jack had a groove. And from this groove came the grooves of all grooves. And while one day viciously throwing down on his box, Jack boldy declared... "Let there be house!" and house music was born. I am, you see,I am the creator, and this is my house! And in my house there is only house music. But I am not so selfish because once you enter my house, it then becomes OUR house and OUR house music! And you see, no one man owns house, because house music is a universal language, spoken, understood by all. You see, house is a feeling that no one can understand really, unless you're deep into the vibe of house. House is an uncontrollable desire to jack your body. And as I told you before, this is our house and our house music. In every house, you understand, there is a keeper. And in this house, the keeper is Jack. Now some of you who might wonder.... "Who is Jack, and what is it that Jack does?" Jack is the one who gives you the power to jack your body! Jack is the one who gives you the power to do the snake. Jack is the one who gives you the key to the wiggly worm. Jack is the one who learns you how to walk your body. Jack is the one that can bring nations and nations of all Jackers together under one house. You may be black, you may be white, you may be Jew or Gentile. It don't make a difference in our House. And this is fresh! Lyrics from "Can you Feel it?" by Mr. Fingers, on TRAX Records, 1987. As I was organizing my recent music acquisitions & purchases, I started adding info to my ID3 tags...things to identify the wonderfully varied flavors of House, in order to make it easier for me to find the right kind of tracks for whatever mix I wish to work on. I started sampling these tracks, and making some playlists for some future mixes for jack2it Radio & my Podcasts. Quite a few tracks had me moving in my seat as I twiddled on the keyboard...so much so that I just had to get up and move. I couldn't help myself...it was as if I had been possessed by the very spirit of Jack. So there I was, shaking & twitching, not breaking it...when in walks my friend, and with the most quizzical look on his face he asks "[i]What the hell is wrong with you...what are you doing???"...My response..."I'm Just Jackin' Off"!!! What we've got here are some funky, chunky, Techy, Jazzy-Fat-Nasty House cuts...engineered for your groovin' pleasure, and arranged and edited by yours truly to bring you 60 minutes of Jackin' Ecstasy. I hope you get to check this out. As always, all comments and criticisms are most welcome. Let me know how this floats your boat. 1.
