In this episode, we explore the magnificent account of Creation, where God speaks the universe into existence over six deliberate days. We witness His power as He creates light, separates waters to form the sky, raises dry land from the seas, and fills the earth with vegetation. The narrative continues as God establishes the sun, moon, and stars to govern days and seasons, then brings forth an abundance of life in the seas and skies. Through it all, we see God's incredible power demonstrated as He brings order to everything, preparing the world for His ultimate creation yet to come.Bible ReadingsGenesis 1:1-23Psalm 19:1-14Psalm 33:1-22Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App! Laetare is a Latin word that means “rejoice.” Today's Gospel describes the reason for our joy: God's great love for us has been revealed in Jesus. Jesus' powerful conversation with Nicodemus, a man of the law, reveals God's plan for the world. In this episode we talk about the joy that comes as a result of being in the presence of God and how important it is that we be walking in that joy.Other episodes referenced in this one:Episode 72: A sacrifice of praiseListen to the sermon by J. D. Greear that I mentionedBelow is the quote from J. D. Greear that I read near the end. Two people asked for it after this lesson was originally given; so, I wanted to include it here as well in case anyone else wanted to note it down."When the Holy Spirit, your real Shepherd speaks, it's in the context of hope. Yes, He will convict you of sin, but when He does, it is redemptive. He identifies what He wants you to change, He gives you a plan to do it, and He assures you of His ability to accomplish it through your life. His voice leads to clarity, and love, and life. When one of the demonic realm speaks to you with a fiery dart, it is in the context of condemnation and despair. It is never clear what they want you to change, there is certainly no hope or no redemption in it. The voice just screams hopelessness and despair.…When our enemy speaks, it has the soundtrack of death, and defeat, and confusion, and despair. When Jesus speaks, it is filled with invitation, and clarity, and love, and hope. Any voice leading you to confusion and despair is your enemy's voice, even if it's using valid questions or pointing out true facts.…My shepherd never leads to confusion and darkness. He leads only to life. Even if Satan is pointing out true things in your life, if it's leading you to despair, recognize that as his voice and resist it.…In your life, the voice of despair is the voice of Satan and never the voice of the Holy Spirit."Scriptures referenced:Matthew 4:4Ephesians 1:17Psalm 63Psalm 4:6-7Numbers 6:24-26Psalm 16:11Psalm 34:5Psalm 34:8John 15:4-5Galatians 5:22-23Psalm 36:7-9Psalm 37:4Malachi 1:6-14Psalm 50:14-15Psalm 50:23Hebrews 13:151 Thessalonians 5:16-18Psalm 69:30-31Philippians 2:13Matthew 3:13-4:11James 1:2-4Romans 8:28James 1:25Psalm 66:16Psalm 34:1-3Proverbs 27:21Luke 17:11-19Hebrews 11:6Psalm 1:1-3John 15:9-11Psalm 33:1Psalm 40:16Psalm 59:17Psalm 71:8Hebrews 12:2Matthew 7:7James 4:2Philippians 4:6-7John 10:10Matthew 11:28Romans 8:1John 14:16-17Revelation 12:10-11Romans 8:33-34**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I switched the word order of Romans 8:28 (although it didn't affect the meaning). Here is the correct wording: "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."When I said I could think of two times where the Lord really did something in my life and then I was hit with anxiety, I meant that there are two times I could think of that intense anxiety immediately followed what the Lord did. I didn't mean to imply that I could think of only two times when I could remember Him working in my circumstances. I can think of countless times He has worked!Support the showIf you feel so led, you can support the podcast by clicking HERE or by clicking the "Support the show" button above. Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary TimeJesus' question, "who do you say that I am," was raised squarely in personal terms. This question to his disciples must have taken them by surprise because it brought out directness and suspense as a moment of truth between friends.Peter's response was rewarded with the promise of a new covenant. God willing, we shall rejoice in that we were not silent as well, but said something with our lives and the "shouts of our hearts." We hope, in the end, the Lord himself will be our reward. Scripture Reading for August 27, 2023Isaiah 22:19-23Psalm 138:1-3, 6, 8Romans 11:33-36Matthew 16:13-20

August 19, 2023Today's Reading: Introit to Pentecost 12: Psalm 28:1-2, 6-7; antiphon: Psalm 28:8Daily Lectionary: 1 Samuel 17:1-19, Acts 26:1-23Psalm 28:7: “The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.”In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The tenses matter.  David is calling out to God for help. Present tense.  Right now.  If God won't answer him he'll die.  Present danger.  There are wicked workers of evil around him.  Present tense. He's in trouble as He prays this psalm.  Blessed be the LORD! For He has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.  Past tense.  Before David ever cried out to God for help, the Lord had already heard.  Before they call, I will answer them, says the LORD.  The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.  Present tense.  David, surrounded by enemies and about to die, is helped.  Present tense.  The help that brings him comfort can exist even in the present tense and danger.  It isn't held out to the future.  It isn't quarantined to a time you don't need it anymore.  It's present tense.  The help David found comfort in, even surrounded by problems, was rooted not in the absence of problems but the presence of God.  God heard and worked even before the problem.  He has sent His Son to rescue you from every evil before you could ever call upon Him.  The prayers we pray are comforts, not because we need to make God work in the future to fix our present problems, but because He has already worked in the past, and His present Word reminds us of our help now.  That help lasts forevermore.  The rescue we have is eternal.  The victory we have is over the grave.  When you pray, don't think of prayer as leverage to make God work. Use those words to remember God's promises.  Everything that you're asking for has been paid for. The help that you need is from a God not far off.  The rescue that you think can't be today is already yours.  Blessed be the Lord, who has already worked to deliver us. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.We all believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Ever-present help in need, Praised by all the heav'nly host; All He made His love enfolds, All creation He upholds. Matthew 5:27-30 – The Heart of the Matter is the Matter of the HeartJesus moves on from the 6 th to the 7 th commandment…”You shall not kill”27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.' [a] 28 But I tell you that anyone wholooks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eyecauses you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your bodythan for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut itoff and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to gointo hell.”Exodus 20:14 – “You shall not commit adultery” One of the 10 commandmentsLeviticus 20:10 – Punishable by death10 “‘If a man commits adultery with another man's wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both theadulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.”Jesus says “You have heard it said”. He is not quoting scripture or changing scripture, but referencingman's traditions around the old testament law.+ Moses and the scribes did not emphasize the internal aspects of adultery, but just the external…theact…which was punishable by death. For many, it became a conveniently narrow definition of sin. Youwere either an adulterer or not, and if you were caught, you were dead.Part of that narrow definition…Deuteronomy 24:1 – References divorcing a woman because she is “displeasing”If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent abouther, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house1. According to some of the scribes, a man could divorce his wife if he grew “cool” toward her if hedidn't like her cooking.+ A law that was clearly intended to safeguard marriage and the women of Israel was turnedinto an escape clause for self-indulgent men…also pious and proud+ Jesus was speaking to these arrogant leaders who were counting themselves righteous, knowing , but He knew the condition of their hearts. He knows the condition of our hearts too.It was very natural, as it is today, for those of us who are non-adulterers to feel maybe a little smug orconceited…the whole…”I haven't done THAT”. “Jesus isn't talking to me on that one.”(Proverbs 11:2) When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. So in this passage, Jesus introduces a radically new standard.Few of us have not crossed that line from attraction to lust at some time – this should fill us with apoverty of spirit and a humility that realizes that we are spiritually bankrupt. It also should make usamazed that God loves us the way He does.+ Jesus carries us to a place that we never saw coming but was intended by God all along.…”but I say…” Jesus is speaking with authority…+The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart+ In this life…in this world, much like Jesus saying hatred in our hearts being the same asmurder, the penalty is not the same as it is for murder, neither are the consequences of lustliterally the same as adultery, but God sees them as worthy of the same penalty…+ Jesus calls a halt to this distortion of God's word by saying that the lust that leads to adulterywill also lead a man to hell.+ Adultery actually breaches several of the 10 Commandments: the commandment that forbidsit, coveting which leads to theft and even idolatry.2. Jesus is not talking about looking or recognizing someone's beauty, but lustfully looking or fantasizingabout more than just looks…a GAZE, not a GLANCE...and to Him (“But I tell you…”) it's the same.It starts in “The heart”…What does the Bible say about the heart?Jeremiah 17:9The heart is deceitful above all thingsand beyond cure.Who can understand it?Proverbs 4:23Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.3. We need to recognize that those thoughts and actions which, long before any overt sexual sin, makesthe possibility of giving into temptation more likely, and we must take dramatic action to avoid them.Psalm 51:10Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.The crucible for silver…refinement of precious metals…to purify usProverbs 25:4-5Remove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel;5 remove wicked officials from the king's presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness.Consider God a silversmith refining us…impure stuff comes to the top under heatJames 1:2-42 Count it all joy, my brothers, [ a ] when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing ofyour faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfectand complete, lacking in nothing. We need to leave our lives of sin behind…all sin, and allow God to refine us.John 8:2-112 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he satdown to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act ofadultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They wereusing this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioninghim, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw astone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they?Has no one condemned you?”11 “No one, sir,” she said.“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”+ Jesus does not condemn her, but calls out the hypocrisy of those willing to stone her.+ We don't really know what Jesus wrote, but consider this possibility….+ Jesus wrote in the sand twice…you could say that Jesus was drawing a line in the sand – for herto step over and sin no more.+ We need to draw a line in the sand in our own lives4. How do we draw a line in the sand?Colossians 3:5Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, andcovetousness, which is idolatry.Vs 29:29: If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to loseone part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causesyou to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than foryour whole body to go into hell.”+ The eyes can entice the heart, and the heart, enticed by the eyes, directs the hands+ Does Jesus want us to literally cut off our hand or pluck out our eyes? No. He wants us to:+ Realize where sin will take us and turn from it. Jesus said that Hell is the direction where all sinleads+ God has something better for all of us+ Deal with sin aggressively, immediately and decisively. You don't need to cut off your hands, but…+ If you need to cancel Netflix, then do it+ If you need to get a flip phone, then do that+ If you need to quit your job to guard your heart, prayerfully consider it.+ If you need to get rid of your romance novels, then do it+ You may need better friendsDo whatever you have to do…for your eternal soul, for your marriage, for your children…Jesus is also addressing you and YOUR sinful heart, me and MINE. He says to pluck out YOUR eye, notsomeone else's.Matthew 7:4-54 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is aplank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will seeclearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.+ Don't blame others for your sin…take responsibility for it. While there is truth in avoiding doing thingsthat cause a brother or sister to stumble, blaming how people dress or whether you are satisfied athome for the condition of your heart, or the actions that come from it, is no different than the scribes'escape clause for their self-indulgence. Jesus put that idea to death.James 4:1717 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them. Why did He have to say it? He doesn't want us to go to hell. Sin takes us there. Period.Francis Chan-“Hell is the backdrop that reveals the profound and unbelievable grace of the cross. It brings to light theenormity of our sin and therefore portrays the undeserved favor of God in full color.”There is good news…He is good news, and a greater understanding of the depth and scope of our sin, will give us a greater understanding of our need for a Savior.Romans 5:88 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.Romans 10:99 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from thedead, you will be saved. We're saved by the cross…the same God that said “this is how I see it…” is the same one who rescues usfrom it. Seventh Sunday of Ordinary TimeFor the average reader of today's Gospel, it seems like Jesus is offering His disciples some pious platitudes about how to live the Christian life. Often times, the most common sense principles in the Bible are the most difficult to follow. "To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." Luke 6: 27-28. Christians can falsely believe, after reading similar passages, that becoming holy punching bags are essentially to becoming Jesus' disciples. Instead, Jesus' invitation to His disciples is to take the high road and to love people deeply. Let us open ourselves to the gift of humility that will allow us to change our lives. Scripture Readings for February 20, 20221 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23Psalm 103:1-4, 8, 10, 12-131 Corinthians 15:45-49Luke 6:27-38

Let me ask you this, have you had a difficult time forgiving yourself for some past sin? Do you have a nagging feeling of guilt that you can't seem to get to go away? Being able to forgive yourself, and the forgiveness of your sins is available if you will place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior. Ephesians 1:7 says, "In Him, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace." Three very important questions we will address:1. Why Do We Need Forgiveness?2. How Do We Get Forgiveness?3. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - They believe in Jesus and that he died on a cross. They even named their church after him, so they must be just another denomination of Protestant Christianity, right? Unfortunately, no, because the Jesus they teach about, the God they worship, and the salvation they believe in is completely antithetical to everything we read about these things in Scripture. Ciara and Jessi kick off a new series, Counterfeit Christianity, which exposes the false gospels and the dangerous teachings of some of the biggest churches in the world today, all who have deceived millions of people into following a teaching that denies fundamental truths about God and His Word. These false teachings of the LDS Church are discussed and corrected in this episode which leave little room for misunderstanding. We know it can be hard to tell someone they are being lied to. It can be even harder to be on the receiving end of that message. But love rejoices in the truth, so it is the truth we preach. And the truth is, followers of the LDS church must repent and come to know the Jesus of the Bible to have any hope for saving grace. The Receptive Life: Learning How to Receive All of the Gifts That Only the Triune God Can Give

The teaching is based on the Scriptures lessons for Sunday, Trinity 14.Proverbs 4:10-23Psalm 119:9-16Galatians 5:16-25Luke 17:11-19The quotes from Martin Luther:Meaning to the First Article of the Apostle's Creed, Small CatechismI believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my limbs, my reason, and all my senses, and still preserves them; in addition thereto, clothing and shoes, meat and drink, house and homestead, wife and children, fields, cattle, and all my goods; that He provides me richly and daily with all that I need to support this body and life, protects me from all danger, and guards me and preserves me from all evil; and all this out of pure, fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me; for all which I owe it to Him to thank, praise, serve, and obey Him. This is most certainly true.Meaning to the First Commandment, Large Catechism24] But let this be said to the simple, that they may well note and remember the meaning of this commandment, namely, that we are to trust in God alone, and look to Him and expect from Him naught but good, as from one who gives us body, life, food, drink, nourishment, health, protection, peace, and all necessaries of both temporal and eternal things. He also preserves us from misfortune, and if any evil befall us, delivers and rescues us, so that it is God alone (as has been sufficiently said) from whom we receive all good, and by whom 25] we are delivered from all evil. Hence also, I think, we Germans from ancient times call God (more elegantly and appropriately than any other language) by that name from the word Good, as being an eternal fountain which gushes forth abundantly nothing but what is good, and from which flows forth all that is and is called good.Triglot Concordia:  Concordia Publishing House, 1921. Because we think being in control gives us security, “freedom,” and allows us to set the expectations of things going “right” (meaning OUR way). But as followers of Christ, and God-centered entrepreneurs, we know this Hustle with Heart journey is all about surrender and acknowledging who's really in charge! Let's bust this myth of control together!   Reference verses:Isaiah 43:11 Peter 5:6-72 Timothy 1:7Galatians 5:22-23Matthew 6:34Lamentations 3:22-23Psalm 118:6 Details on the 21-Day Mind-Body-Biz Bootcamp can be found here! The community referenced in the call to action for listeners is the Pursuing Success God's Way community on FB- where God-centered entrepreneurs gather to support, encourage and lift up others building businesses that honor God and serve his people.  You're invited to join us there! Be sure to subscribe to this podcast and keep up with the blog and updates at www.erinharrigan.com, and please show your love by giving this podcast ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ on @applepodcasts!
