Have you ever heard a story and said that couldn't happen to me? As a culture, we love shows like Law and Order, Criminal Minds, NCIS, but we typically live our lives every day that can't happen in real life. Today's guest Bill Mitchel shares his story about the murder of his daughter following her graduation from college. How do you go about sequencing your training? Joining me on the show today is Keiran Halton and Ryan Patrick. The three of us dive into what it means to sequence your training and how you can produce massive results by doing so. We constantly see athletes struggling to produce the results they want in a short period of time, and a lot of that comes down to how we are appropriately lining up our training elements to continuously build strength. The big question we see athletes face is whether to focus on work capacity, hypertrophy, strength, or power and the specific order these training blocks and phases should go in. We also see athletes struggling to know how often to switch up their main lifts and accessory work. The three of us go into detail on when the perfect time to have a phase change is and how changing up your training blocks can help your PR numbers skyrocket. The back end of the episode is surrounding the benefit of inverting your set and rep scheme in your training. From a strength and skill standpoint, inverting your reps allows for better skill acquisition and ultimately helps ensure high quality reps over poorly executed reps. Tune in to discover how you can sequence your training to unlock massive results in record time. How many children scream for help but have no one to help? It is easy to go about our daily lives and isolate ourselves from the evil in our world, but that doesn't mean it isn't present. Today, Asia Raine talks about how her podcast Letters to the People are these complex stories of trauma from dark places where children's cries go unheard. Sharing these episodes and stories is one of the reasons Causepods was founded because, like a TED talk where we share ideas, it is just as important to hear all the stories. A lesson we can all take away from this episode is the power of one person seeing, hearing, and understanding someone. It is often the permission to let go of what was and fully embrace the life that could be. Key Topics: What is the genesis moment for sharing stories around trauma (1:37) How to know if a story is made up (7:11) How did you overcome the idea of your story becoming visible in the community (14:14) What has been the impact from listeners (20:23) What makes SCSA the charity of focus for today's episode (25:40) Website link: https://letterstothepeople.com/ Podcast Links: https://open.spotify.com/show/2kZwLzYhMwqryUxkUSdCxf?si=cveH7fsRQBaCPAw4x9znIw&dl_branch=1 (Spotify) Charity: https://www.scsaorg.org/ (Survivors of Childhood Sex Abuse (SCSA)) Donation: https://www.scsaorg.org/donate (Link) Social Links https://www.facebook.com/voice.for.transformation/ (Facebook) https://www.instagram.com/letters.to.the.people.podcast/ (Instagram) Thanks for Listening! What do you think the most overlooked variable is when writing a training program?? Joining me on the show today are two of the Rebel coaches, Ryan Patrick and Keiran Halton. The three of us unpack why gamification is so important in programming and the benefits you'll reap once you stop overlooking it. Using gamification in your workouts does the following: it creates a setting that is more fun and not as easy to get burnt out in, it causes you to push harder because you always have a number to beat, and it will allow you to start hitting daily PRs. Join us as Keiran, Ryan and I share some of our favorite techniques and strategies when it comes to gamification and how to utilize it in your workouts. Since the pandemic, a large portion of our athletes aren't training in group settings, and some are strictly training by themselves. We want to be sure we are setting our athletes up for success, and the most effective way to do this is to ensure they are creating competition with themselves that keeps their training fun and leaving them experiencing more progress in 12 weeks than most people see in 6-12 months. The three of us dissect the auto-regulation technique, representative task design, and the mirror effect. We then wrap up the episode by bringing in velocity-based training and the benefits of utilizing it in your workouts. We also share why we believe people are married to the periodization models and why specific goals call for other methods. Be sure to listen in as we unpack how to gamify your workouts to 10x your performance. This week, Richard Brennan joins us to discuss whether there are any similarities between Trend Following and other investment approaches, the benefits of ‘forward-testing' a system, the art of ‘hunting outliers', what the optimum level of leverage could be, how much total portfolio ‘risk-to-stop' to aim for, some thoughts on margin requirements, and which other strategy complements Trend Following the best. We also took a deep dive into backtesting, touching on topics such as: how much we can safely derive from a backtest, why a backtest with a smooth equity curve should raise alarm bells, a good checklist to use when creating a backtest, and whether some level of curve-fitting may actually be required for a good backtest. Special guest Eric Crittenden returns to the show today to discuss the fallacies of the typical 60/40 portfolio, the Federal Reserve's recent decision to begin tightening fiscal policy, Eric's last appearance on the show which was at the March 2020 stock market bottom, different speeds of Trend Following, why stable returns doesn't always equate to low risk, the difficulty in being comfortable with doing the opposite of what we're wired to do, how managed futures can help investor's portfolios, negative interest rates and flight out of fixed income, what could Trend Following bring to the crypto space, and changing the narrative around Trend Following. In this episode, we discuss: The misconceptions around the safety & profitability of a typical 60/40 portfolio The recent Federal Reserve decision to tighten fiscal policy Eric's last appearance on the show, which was at the exact bottom of the 2020 market crash The varying speeds of Trend Following Why low-volatility returns may not mean that a strategy isn't risky Overcoming behavioural biases Managed futures as a great benefit to investor's portfolios The flight out of fixed income Why crypto investors could benefit from Trend Following Changing the narrative around Trend Following Follow Niels on https://twitter.com/toptraderslive (Twitter), https://www.linkedin.com/in/nielskaastruplarsen (LinkedIn), https://www.youtube.com/user/toptraderslive (YouTube) or via the https://www.toptradersunplugged.com/ (TTU website). 'The typical pie-chart of diversification ends up being all long-GDP assets, which means these are going to do well in a risk-on environment, when we're awash with liquidity. The problem is, when we see a sell off or a liquidity event like March 2020, we see the correlations of an ‘uncorrelated' pie chart go to 1, which means that they all sell off at the same time.' - Jason BuckWhat happens when an unexpected major event occurs and all of your supposedly diversified investments suddenly become correlated, before heading sharply to the downside? Jason Buck and his partner at Mutiny Fund have been thinking about this question for a long-time, and have created a portfolio designed to protect against these ‘Black Swan', high-volatility events. You may have seen Jason Buck alongside another volatility-expert (and previous guest of Top Traders Unplugged) Chris Cole on Real Vision, or listened to his ‘Pirates of Finance' podcast with co-host Corey Hoffstein (another previous guest of Top Traders Unplugged), but he's also been a long-time listener of the show, so it was only right that I invited him on to discuss some of the methods and thinking behind Mutiny Fund, and how these approaches can provide protection and profits during all market environments. Thanks for listening and please welcome to the show our guest Jason Buck. In This Episode, You'll Learn: How Jason got to where he is today If the initial risks Jason set out to protect his clients against, have changed Why CTAs could be considered ‘long-volatility' assets that provide protection during broad market selloffs such as 2020 The benefits of ‘ensemble' investing The opposite requirements of building wealth versus keeping wealth Why a sample size of 100 years is still just an anomaly Why the typical ‘diverse' portfolio might be riskier than investors realise What a ‘long-volatility' asset looks like The history of long-volatility assets The term ‘crisis alpha' and what it means to him and his clients How to overcome the challenges of educating investors about volatility-event risks Whether the addition of long-volatility components to portfolios today has affected his initial approach 'The problem with Sharpe Ratio is that it was originally built as a portfolio tool to measure the portfolio level, but now we measure individual strategies or individual managers with Sharpe, and that was never the intention.' - Jason Buck Why the Sharpe Ratio is often misunderstood as a risk measurement tool How much, and why, returns vary among different long-volatility managers How to approach position sizing with black swan events in mind Some of the common investor mistakes How to choose between different Trend Following managers How to create a strategy for inflationary and deflationary environments If less-liquid assets can be safely incorporated into a portfolio How to analyse backtests properly If Jason uses Gold and Bitcoin in his long-volatility strategies What keeps Jason up at night in terms of risks Follow Niels on https://twitter.com/toptraderslive (Twitter), https://www.linkedin.com/in/nielskaastruplarsen (LinkedIn), https://www.youtube.com/user/toptraderslive (YouTube) or via the https://www.toptradersunplugged.com/ (TTU website).
