Meet Nic Johnston, the man behind PRVN programming and the guy keeping Mayhem Team Athlete, Taylor Williamson (his fiancée) properly fed! We get to know a little bit about Nic's background in Michigan as a collegiate baseball player, his move to Iowa, then to Nashville, and his role as coach to CrossFit Games veteran Brooke Wells. Look for Nic, Shane and Dwight in Madison and for their PRVN crew to show up in a big way.
Kent talks with Dwight Upshaw & Nic Johnston, two of the coaches from PRVN Fitness, coaching some of the biggest names in the sport such as Tia Clair Toomey, Brooke Wells, Alec Smith, Streat Hoerner, Will Moorad and James Newbury. --- Dwight Upshaw, most recently was the head coach of Crossfit Sanitas, has trained all types of athletes for nearly 15 years. (Crossfit Sanitas, btw, is the gym in Boulder CO owned by Eric Roza. Eric was the CEO of Datalogix, an extremely successful technology company that he sold to Oracle, allowing him to buy Crossfit in 2020, where he is now CEO). Growing up in Northern California, he started out in track, football, swimming, baseball, and soccer. In college, he was a D-1 rower on the UC Berkeley Crew Team. He later transitioned into triathlons and multi-sport racing and was part of the UC Berkeley Tri Team that won the Collegiate National Championship. After years as an endurance athlete and with burnout beginning to creep in, Dwight found CrossFit. The competitive, fun, community-based atmosphere helped him fall back in love with fitness. As a Boulder CrossFitter, you gotta love a guy who can run a marathon in 2:39 (that’s 26 6-minute miles) AND deadlift over 545 pounds! You can follow Dwight on IG at: Dwight.Upshaw Nic Johnston, another exceptional Crossfit coach, is the guy you'll see a lot on PRVN's Youtube channel explaining the workouts and foundation work their putting their athletes through. He is former head coach of XLR8 Athletix and a Professional Nutrition Consultant, which they are utilizing w/ the athletes training at PRVN. Alec Smith is a 3-time CrossFit Games competitor who is perhaps best known for his incredible expertise at gymnastics, and for being one of the first openly gay male athletes in the sport. He started in gymnastics at age 2, and excelled at the sport through middle school when a car accident forced him to retire. After recovering and dabbling in several other sports, he eventually began training CrossFit alongside his older brother, Ben Smith. In 2013 Alec qualified for his first Regionals, and by 2017 he was competing at the Games as an individual. In 2019 Alec joined Team CrossFit Krypton and went on to win first at Wodapalooza and second at the CrossFit Games. Currently Alec is gearing up for the 2021 season by training alongside Brooke Wells in Nashville, TN. I was excited to catch up with him to learn more about his experience winning team silver at the Games, to hear what his plans are for 2021, and to learn more about how he found the courage to get outside his comfort zone and share his true self with the world. Six-time CrossFit Games athlete Brooke Wells was just 19 when she qualified for her first CrossFit Games in 2015, and she's competed at every CrossFit Games since, always placing inside the top 20. This year, at the 2020 CrossFit Games, Brooke earned her best finish yet, placing 5th amongst an elite field of competitors. When Brooke started CrossFit, she had a natural gift for strength and lifting heavy weights. Combine that with a background in track and gymnastics, plus several years of hard work to improve on her weaknesses, and Brooke has become an incredibly well-rounded athlete who is a consistent podium threat. In Stage 1 of the 2020 CrossFit Games, she finished in the top 10 on every event, proving there are very few holes in her game. Looking ahead to the 2021 season, she's excited to start improving upon her strength numbers again and to inch her way up the leaderboard even further. She's also excited to be surrounding herself with a training community to help her achieve that goal. Brooke recently relocated from Tulsa to Nashville and has teamed up with several other high level athletes including Will Morad, Alec Smith and Streat Horner to form an environment where she can be challenged to give her best with each session. In Brooke's second appearance on the podcast, we caught up just a week after Stage 2 of the 2020 CrossFit Games to talk about her experience at the 2020 Games, her plans for the 2021 season, and the legacy she hopes to leave on CrossFit. In this episode we discuss: Areas where Brooke feels she has grown the most over the past 6 years Her 2020 training season How Brooke decided to move to Nashville Brooke's approach to preparing for Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the 2020 CrossFit Games Her typical daily routine Brooke's experience at Stage 2 of the CrossFit Games Her impressions on the changes in leadership within CrossFit HQ How Brooke is preparing for the 2021 training season How she plans to spend her downtime during the off-season The legacy Brooke hopes to leave on CrossFit Three things Brooke does on a regular basis that have the biggest positive impact on her health One thing she thinks could have a big impact on her health, but she has a hard time implementing What a healthy life looks like to Brooke You can follow Brooke on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. You may know him. You may not. If you know him from afar (via IG) like I do - then he would just appear to be a heartthrob kid with sick aesthetics and amazing gymnastic handles. He's built a personal brand + business using his gift and athleticism. And recently announced on social media that he was gay. Fuck yeah. That level of authenticity created a series of thoughts in my head that I took a few days to organize them into content. If anyone knows Alec personally, make a connection please. Would love to interview this amazing human.

The price of insulin in the US has more than doubled since 2012. As a result, the cost of this life-saving hormone is out of reach for many people with diabetes. Some try to make it last longer by rationing the expensive substance, putting their lives at risk. Alec Smith tragically lost his life in June 2017, a few weeks after his 26th birthday, from a condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis—a consequence of dangerously high blood sugar. Nicole Smith-Holt, Alec's mother, shares her son's sad story and explains what can be done to combat this troubling problem.

What are the options for people who are forced to move due to floods, droughts, heat waves, melting ice and extreme storms? What happens when entire States, such as low-lying islands in the Pacific, lose territory due to these and other impacts of climate change? The communities most impacted are increasingly being forced to flee within and across national borders. However, they are not protected under most national immigration schemes; nor do they qualify as refugees under international law. Two countries, including Finland and Sweden, recently abolished humanitarian protection clauses that protected individuals unable to return to their countries of origin due to environmental disasters. A United States Court rejected a claim from the Native Alaskan town of Kivalina for compensation due to territory loss, which is forcing the town to relocate. While New Zealand is reportedly drafting a climate change refugee scheme, the Supreme Court denied protection and deported a Kiribati national seeking asylum due to environmental reasons. Most recently, though, two Italian courts decided to protect two people fleeing environmental disasters. In this episode, we assess the current legal framework for persons displaced and territories disappearing in the context of climate change, and call on the international community to advance legal mechanisms for mitigation and adaptation. Many thanks to Dr. Joseph Foukona (University of the South Pacific Law School), Dr. Michael Gerrard (Columbia Law School) and Dr. Chiara Raucea (Tilburg Law School) for their generous contributions to the episode; ELSA Tilburg for organizing the climate change lecture serious; and Dr. Phillip Paiement and Dr. Anna Marhold for their research guidance.
