episode 144 Christmas in Alicante Christmas Around the World Mini Series, Ep 02 Christmas in Alicante with Mar Lozano Today, I'm welcoming Mar from the Alicante region of Spain to the podcast. Mar comes from a super traditional small town in Spain, just a 15 minute drive from the coast, where you could even visit the beach on a typical balmy Christmas Day. One of the most fascinating parts of this interview is the contrast between the traditions of this very small Catholic town and the way that Mar's family, who are not at all religious, celebrated Christmas. And this same theme - traditional vs. very progressive - plays out in all the foods Mar's family eats on and around Christmas as well. On the one hand, she one of the most famous and most-searched recipes from Spain, a soft almond nougat, and on the other hand, she's cooked an entirely Vegan Christmas feast for her family one year. This episode is the perfect example of what I love most about this podcast - while we can always learn about culture from one person, we are constantly reminded that every single family and individual in each culture have their OWN stories to tell. So here's Mar with her stories of Christmas in Alicante, Spain. About the Christmas Around the World Podcast Mini Series Welcome back to the Christmas Around the World Series in conjunction with the Christmas Desserts Around the World post. Join our hosts Al Salas and his husband Carlos Torres. Al and Carlos have been together since 2002. They retired from our respective careers in DC in late summer 2016 and initially moved to a small, mid-Atlantic shore town, Lewes, Delaware, where we had been weekenders for about two decades. After wintering for 6 weeks in Spain in 2018, they decided to investigate moving there. To that end, in 2019, they took two, 3-month “reconnaissance” visits — the first during winter, the second in summer — to decide whether and where to move. They fell in love with several coastal cities and towns between — and including –Valencia and Malaga but ultimately decided to settle in Alicante. They sold their Delaware home in 2019 and moved here in mid-February of 2020.Sit back and relax and listen to what Alicante, Spain is all about!

Buy: https://music.tanzgemeinschaft.com/jgoutsider-fullmoon Publisher: Proton LLC Label: Tanzgemeinschaft Release date: 06/05/2022 @tanzgemeinschaft @andydegage @jg_outsider For the upcoming release on Tanzgemeinschaft, they are welcome 2 new great artists to the label. The main artist, hailing from Alicante (Spain), has gone through various stages. Starting his career back in 1984 as a trance producer, moving around Europe. With the accumulated experience JG Outsider has, he nowadays, creates a more balanced sound focussing on melodic and progressive techno genre. Proving his track record with Nein Records, Krafted Underground, Ultranza Records and more this can't be bad. Great to have him on board with his “Fullmoon” release. Two fantastic originals with a great dark and moody atmosphere. The title track is one to lose yourself in the dancefloor euphoria. Mesmerizing vocal samples and a haunting atmosphere create a fantastic journey cloaked in ominous synth textures. “Deep Delight”, with the banging rolling bass sets the tone will get that dance floor moving even more. Very evocative and has a high calibre groove with high-intensity levels. “Deep Delight” has undergone a makeover by the amazing DJ Andy de Gage´. This talent, we believe, knows how to set a record to his hand. Even his own productions carry a lot of quality. Get your groove on with this release!

Our guest is Andres Carull (Finca Casa Balaguer) from Alicante Spain. Winemaking isn't the kind of gig you can pursue casually, it's a holistic enterprise and the enormity of the thing can be both hypnotic and thrilling. For Andres and his wife Marta, wine is more than a career it is a sacred calling around which their whole world revolves and after talking with Andres, my mind was lit up and my hopes rekindled. For more content you can follow us on Instragram @olmstead wine and check out olmsteadwine.com for articles, producer write ups and our monthly newsletter. Sometimes, retirees don't spend long in what they believed would be their “forever home.” After retirement, Al Salas and Carlos Torres moved to, what was, their vacation home in the small seaside town of Lewes, Delaware. They soon realized the place they loved going to on weekends was not where they wanted to settle. Additionally, as young retirees, the couple had to pay for their own health insurance, a hefty price in the United States. Al and Carlos soon discovered that Alicante, Spain, a small city on the Mediterranean Sea, would be their true “forever home.” They purchased a penthouse apartment with a sprawling patio and incredible views. Find out more about this lesser known jewel of a city, on Episode 69 of Retire There with Gil & Gene.

Lana is a Multilingual Trainer who teaches multiple languages online, including Spanish and English! She describes how she pursued her Master's degree in Spain and met her other half there; she even gained experience teaching English to children in Xiamen, China for a year. We explore the difficulties of applying for a Work Visa in Spain as a Russian citizen, including the laundry list of documents she needed! Lana tells me about the popularity of Alicante, especially among European expats, and what drew her to the city - including "The Spanish Mentality" and its appeal. Shifting gears, we discuss the impact that the pandemic has had on her work as a Multilingual Trainer, and how it's been felt across Europe more broadly. We also dive into the value of social relationships during these difficult times, and the differences between introverted and extroverted expats. On the social side of things, we dissect the notorious "carousel" or "revolving door" of faces you encounter as an expat, and how to prioritize quality over quantity. We wrap up with talking about her hilarious online communication over WhatsApp with her mother, and managing familial relationships while abroad. | Website: https://www.theexpatexperience.org/ | Facebook: The Expat Experience |
