We have a very interesting guest on the Podcast this week. Deryck Fay has written a fascinating book about the history of Telecoms in Ireland called “Connecting a Nation” and it's a very surprising history. Its starts in the 1850s, yes, when the first sub-sea cables were being laid and Ireland was the natural hub for the first Transatlantic cables. Later its proximity to Nova Scotia made it the natural hub for the first Marconi radio services. We then talk about the state of Telecoms during the rise of the new, and in fairness not well off, Irish state. Finally, we get on to the last decades when there was huge investment in Telecoms and there was the tremendous growth of Mobile and the Internet and Ireland became a leader in many ways. Deryck is a great raconteur and he tells the story with clarity and insight that I found fascinating. I couldn't quite find the music that Deryck wanted but you'll see I got a close second with a famous clip of Albert Reynolds talking about a plane hijacking. The other voice briefly in the background is the late great Charlie Bird, journalist. Enjoy

In this episode John and Kelly discuss the classic book psycho cybernetics. John read this book when he was 19 and it had a huge impact on him. It's all about self image- written by a plastic surgeon. The biggest thing John got out of this book was how to have a great self-image at the tender age of 19. It also taught him how not to worry. Self-esteem is key to happiness. The central concept of the book is you create a mental image in your mind of what you want. Then you visualize in your mind that mental image often and with intention. We all have a success mechanism inside us. It's your subconscious mind. So you want to envision what you want for your life. Psycho cybernetics is all about proactively manipulating the subconscious mind. Just like the top book in the world on success is based on the very same thing. Think and Grow Rich. Psycho cybernetics also talks about being happy, and how to do that. You think pleasant thoughts most the time. Ignoring stuff that's irritating. If you think of the past, only reflect on the good stuff. In the present, only the good stuff as well. Be as cheerful as possible. Be more friendly to others. Be less focused on people's false and irritations. Act as if successes are inevitable. Practice intentionally smiling. A critical aspect of the book is eliminating worry. Here's the trick. Just notice when you're worrying. Then trigger to something you're grateful for. Worry will defeat itself because it will stimulate anti-worrying. Think about that idea. And to wrap up, John discusses an energy force beyond the caloric energy force. It's called adaptive energy. And that's why some people heal from injury or sickness much quicker than others. Is based on the desire to live. About the Hosts: John Mitchell John's story is pretty amazing. How do you talk to kids about sex? In today's episode, Robin LaCross and I discuss talking about sex to kids. Robin shares the childhood experiences that drew her to her purpose. She reveals the impact of a book about natural family planning, that raised many questions for her. Her curiosity led her to find out more about fertility and the female body. Robin tells us about how she shared this info and what led her to the realization that she needed to be talking to moms as the gatekeepers to these conversations with kids. Cover the basics of sex with your kids Tune in to hear what Robin suggests as the basic topics to cover with your kids. She suggests that these conversations are underpinned by your family values. This is a critical piece of the messages parents share with their kids. She refers to a checklist she recommends as a roadmap to help you as a parent with these messages. Robin brings up culture and it's often unhealthy impact on perceptions kids grow up with about sex and relationship roles. Join in to hear about what Robin thinks about honesty and its value in a child's life. She follows its weight throughout a lifetime and it's reflection in relationships. How do you introduce the topic of sex? Robin shares a few great ideas on how to broach the subject with your kids. Listen in to hear how to incorporate animals, pregnancy, and content on television. Robin recommends a book that can help introduce the topic ( find it below in the links). She covers the need for boundaries and helping kids understand them. Listen in to learn what Robin thinks about teaching kids about their bodies and what the appropriate age is to start discussing changes in bodies.
