Ray and Jim welcome Colonel Rich Butler and Dr. Sheena Greitens to help us understand the readiness of China's military for combat operations, and what that means for global security. They explain the contingencies the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is preparing for, from a cross-strait invasion of Taiwan to a South China Sea confrontation, and what lessons the PLA has learned from Russia's conflict with Ukraine.Colonel Butler and Dr. Greitens also discuss how China uses the PLA and non-traditional forces like the People's Armed Police as coercive tools against its neighbors. They also weigh the sheer weight of China's security forces against its blind spots—political control, corruption and inexperience in combat operations. They also consider China's ongoing political and military corruption purges—and their impact on combat readiness. They explain how China prioritizes the conquest of Taiwan for achieving its “national rejuvenation”, and what role coercion plays in achieving those goals, even while planning for the potential of a protracted conflict against the U.S. and implementing non-traditional security programs across the Indo-Pacific region.Colonel Butler and Dr. Greitens unpack the problems the PLA faces in a cross-strait invasion scenario, and what problems a military blockade of the island might present. They talk through the military and economic challenges Taiwan faces, both in terms of food and energy security.

Almost 70% of cops want to be armed, and I say who the hell are we to get in their way? The new Commissioner has come in, and he's been more gung ho on this idea of regular arming of our police force than any of his predecessors. The fact is they're on the front line, aren't they? Last year, there was a 9% increase in tactical operations interactions – that means basically the bad ones. That's up to more than 7000. The number of cops physically attacked doubled from 2022 to 2023. It's dangerous. We're not the ones going out on the streets, are we? We're tucked up in bed with moral superiority saying, no, we don't like the idea of you guys being armed. I prefer you pull the gang member over, please. Take your chances. It's a little bit sanctimonious from us, don't you think? If they feel it would make their situation safer, then I trust them to make that call. Of course, you'll always have mistakes, and chaos prior to the shooting clearly shouldn't have happened, and they say they're working further at training etcetera to make that all better. But we can't sit here tucked up on our beds at night, all judgey, when we're not the ones out there in the dead of the night facing more violence, guns, and crime. Even when acknowledging the mass shootings that have plagued the nation, increasing criminal incidents on Campus, students were more concerned about the Police being armed. “I'm personally not for it,” said one student “Why add guns to the problem?” But despite most acknowledging that increasing crime rates were a problem, many of the students maintained the stance that it would be best to leave the police unarmed.

Police or cops, by definition, are an authority dedicated to enforcing laws and investigating crimes. If the situation warrants, they're authorized to make arrests. Most of us think we can trust the police with our lives. The Police Commissioner says he will not be routinely arming his officers - despite a new survey showing three quarters of the force want to be armed. It's a decision that solely rests with him, but it's something the Prime Minister has also ruled out. The Police Association, which commissioned the survey, says there's been a blurring of politics and policing in recent years, and the politicians need to step back. Our police reporter Ben Strang has the details.

What will it take to reduce the number of police traffic stops that devolve into a use of force, sometimes with deadly consequences? Is there a way to overcome concerns of how race and other biases affect who gets pull over by law enforcement officers? Is there a better way to serve the public's needs for enforcement of traffic laws? In this episode of "Speaking of Arkansas," Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette editorial editor Greg Harton visits with Dr. Jordan Blair Woods, a law professor and criminologist at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Dr. Woods proposes creating local and state agencies focused solely on enforcement of traffic by unarmed "traffic monitors," eliminating the traffic stop as either a tool or an excuse for larger investigatory purposes. Doing so, he says, would at least reduce traffic stops of over-policed populations, such as racial minorities and poorer people. BUILD YOUR DREAM BUSINESS IN 8 WEEKS: https://londonreal.tv/biz/ 2021 SUMMIT TICKETS: https://londonreal.tv/summit/ NEW MASTERCLASS EACH WEEK: http://londonreal.tv/masterclass-yt LATEST EPISODE: https://londonreal.link/latest BRIAN FOR MAYOR: https://BrianForMayor.London/ These are frustrating times for Nick Whitcombe. The owner of Body Tech Fitness Gym and Raw Iron Clothing in Liverpool recently made national headlines after the armed police attended his gym and issued him with a £1,000 fine after refusing to close in response to new lockdown rules. Last week, Liverpool went into Tier 3 as Northern cities like Manchester and Leeds were also hit with similar measures. The impact on Liverpool has meant gyms, bars and restaurants have been forced to close during this two-week period. Since then, Nick has joined forces with several other gyms in Liverpool to stand up against the Government and has remained open. Despite the warnings that fines would double every three hours, Nick continues his stance and has been supported by a GoFundMe page called ‘Save Liverpool’s Gyms’ which has raised over £50,000 and continues to rise. This lockdown has been responsible for contributing to myriad detrimental effects to people’s mental and physical health, with male suicide at an all-time high in London, and exercise has been a release for people during these uncertain times. However, Nick has been keen to keep people mentally and physically active by providing members with a free gym kit, and following all the necessary safety measures on reopening. Yet, laws have prevented people from having the opportunity to access the health & fitness industry, which have also caused stress and anxiety for many entrepreneurs across the country, to which Nick has highlighted the lack of evidence to support the latest measures. From the 22 million gym visits this has only resulted in 78 covid cases as UK gyms account for only 0.38 cases per 100,000 cases according to data from UK Active. Questions have to be asked about the decision-making of this government, and how they are causing more suffering to entrepreneurs and residents of cities across the country.

Amid the India-China stand-off, a more prominent role for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in LAC management with the Army is being considered. This brings into focus India’s many paramilitary, armed police and border forces. In episode 517 of ThePrint's #CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta lists all, their role and pedigree and how these add up to the third largest land army in the world.
John Sewell, former Toronto Mayor and member of Toronto Police Accountability Coalition, speaks to Saba Eitizaz about why the police are on the mental health frontlines and what can be done to avoid these tragic outcomes. One of the questions being raised is why are police the first responders to mental health emergencies and why are “wellness checks” being conducted with the help of guns and body armour?
Police are right to worry about their safety on the job and the shooting in West Auckland yesterday is an awful reminder of the risk every officer faces and the stakes when something goes wrong.Of course there is never a ‘good time’ for Police to be ambushed and killed. We’re fortunate these events in New Zealand are relatively rare. But the timing of this tragedy is especially pertinent. With ongoing protests around the World about Police brutality and racial profiling, and fresh off the back of the Police Armed Response Team trial here, it adds another layer of complexity and tension in the debate about arming more of our Police.I went through hundreds of pages of documents released to journalists under the Official Information Act and a couple of things about the Armed Response Team trial were very clear. The trial was rushed. It was poorly planned. From an academic perspective it was woefully designed. And the communities affected most by officers with guns on the beat weren’t consulted. But that doesn’t necessarily mean there shouldn’t have been a trial. Or that a better balance couldn’t be found between making Police officers and the public safe.Because Police do face risks. Here’s what the Auditor-General said in the official report into gun buyback scheme.“There is no reliable picture of how many newly prohibited firearms, magazines, and parts remain in the community.”When I went to the Police National Headquarters and interviewed Police Commissioner Andy Coster last week, he told me frankly that no one knows how many illegal guns are still on New Zealand’s streets.Imagine knowing that in the back of your mind, as you strapped on a blue vest and headed out on the beat. It would hardly inspire confidence.Police deserve to feel as safe as is possible. The Public deserves to feel as safe as is possible. Of course there are mixed views on both sides, but generally when it comes to the debate over arming Police, the perceived safety of one party comes at the expense of the other. Many Police want to guns in order to feel more safe. Many people, especially in Māori and Pacifica communities, feel less safe when Police are armed. Here’s a line that stuck out to me from those files we obtained on the ART trial. It’s from the Evidenced Based Policing Centre:“There is an intrinsic trade-off between the issues of police safety and public trust. Police are feeling more threatened on the job and require means to effectively protect themselves. However, this need must also be weighed against how changes to the way police are armed will affect public trust and confidence.”Now we don’t know much detail about the West Auckland shooting and I don’t want to speculate. It’s possible that if the officers were armed, the outcome would sadly have been exactly the same. It’s also possible the person responsible didn’t use an illegal gun. We don’t know yet.But I do think we have a responsibility as a society to continue conversations about how best to strike the balance between making Police safe and making the public safe. The problem with the ART trial wasn’t the question of whether we should have specialist armed units to respond to gun crime. As yesterday’s event sadly proves - that’s a legitimate question that deserves careful, informed consideration and scrutiny. The problem was the process. I think the way it was rolled out actually let down officers on the front line. In scrapping ARTs, there is a risk that the central issue in question has been pushed off the table as well. And no one in any profession deserves to die on the job.
Armed Response Teams are dead in the water, with the new police commissioner reading the room when it comes to arming Kiwi cops.
The Chinese regime has deployed additional police forces, border guards, and the People’s Armed Police paramilitary to the China-Russia border in Heilongjiang Province. This comes as the Russian government has begun expatriating Chinese living in Russia, and as the Chinese regime refuses to allow them to return. Leaked documents from Harbin in China’s Heilongjiang Province also show the number of virus patients there may be 200 times the official data. This follows leaked documents from provincial authorities saying the situation in Harbin is “out of control.” And nations around the world are rallying against the Chinese regime’s programs for overseas influence, and many are now calling for investigations into the CCP and its handling of the virus. In Episode 98 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with famed Hong Kong investor David Webb, an outspoken critic of China’s authoritarian grip over the coastal territory. There are two parts to this story that we explore during this conversation. The first deals with Hong Kong – specifically, its political and economic future as an independent territory of mainland China. The second deals with China itself – specifically, its political and financial stability as the most leveraged economy at scale, in the world. The events in Hong Kong over the last several months – exacerbated by Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s determination to push through the Extradition bill despite mounting opposition – have created a terrifying sense of crisis and disorder in the city. Videos of police beatings and retaliatory violence by protestors, as well as satellite images of what appear to be armored personnel carriers and other vehicles belonging to China’s paramilitary People’s Armed Police, have created an ominous sense of foreboding in the city. "One country, two systems," might be the fault line upon which the tectonic forces shaping China’s political and economic development are colliding, creating mountains of civil unrest among Hong Kongers. At what point do the political tremors in Hong Kong become civic earthquakes capable of shattering the fragile peace between these two irreconcilable systems? Will open society prevail in Hong Kong, or will China do whatever it takes in order to reassert control over the former British colony? In the second part of this conversation, David Webb shares his insights from his decades of experience studying the Chinese economy and investing in Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong. Those insights include a discussion about China’s overleveraged banking system, an overvalued RMB, and a system of Ponzi financing for Chinese companies listed on non-mainland exchanges. David Webb also contests a thesis famously put forward by hedge fund manager Kyle Bass about the precarious position of Hong Kong’s currency and the risk of decoupling with the US dollar. Additional topics include a new “tech cold war,” China’s propaganda battle, the US-China trade war, and much, much more. There is no overtime to this week’s episode on account of some technical constraints. Instead, we have made the transcript to this conversation available to Overtime subscribers, which will be published in the next day or two. A spokesman for China's ceremonial legislature condemned statements from U.S. lawmakers supportive of Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, as more protests were planned Sunday following a day of dueling rallies that highlighted the political divide in the Chinese territory. You Wenze called the lawmakers' comments "a gross violation of the spirit of the rule of law, a blatant double standard and a gross interference in China's internal affairs."He said that Hong Kong's 7.5 million people and Chinese population as a whole rejected the actions of a "very small group of violent protesters" as well as "any interference of foreign forces."You did not mention any specific lawmaker, but numerous U.S. senators and Congress members, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have affirmed the U.S. commitment to human rights and urged the Hong Kong government to end the standoff.Congress also has the power to pass legislation affecting Hong Kong's relationship with the U.S. in ways that could further erode the territory's reputation for stability and rule of law. That includes the recent re-introduction of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act in Congress, which would among its other provisions require the Secretary of State to issue an annual certification of Hong Kong's autonomy to justify special treatment afforded to the city.More directly, President Donald Trump could simply issue an executive order suspending Hong Kong's special trading status with the U.S., a move that could have a devastating effect on the local economy at a time when Beijing and Washington are engaged in a bitter trade war.On Saturday, pro-democracy protesters marched on one side of Hong Kong's famous harbor for the 10th weekend while a pro-government rally called for an end to the sometimes violent movement."The government right now doesn't listen to the people, and the police are too violent," said Bobby Tse, a retiree who watched the pro-democracy march from a bridge. "It didn't used to be like this. We didn't have to protest every week. But now even though we have protests every week, the government still gives no response."At the pro-government rally, speakers on a stage said they love both Hong Kong and China and asked the protesters why they are afraid of China. Supporters gave a thumbs-up to police officers and posed for photos with them.Driver Leo Chen said he came out because he wants peace in his city."Before, everyone in Hong Kong helped each other, it was very harmonious," he said. "Now to see it become like this, I'm not happy, so I've come out to show a little strength."Earlier Saturday, thousands of schoolteachers marched to the official residence of Hong Kong's leader, Carrie Lam, to show support for the protesters who include many students.Carrying signs that read "Protect the next generation" and umbrellas to ward off intermittent downpours, the teachers tied white ribbons to a metal fence near Government House. They said the government should answer the protesters' demands and stop using what they called police violence to disperse demonstrators who have taken over streets and besieged and defaced government buildings. The movement's demands include Lam's resignation, democratic elections and an independent investigation into police use of force.A rally in Victoria Park has been called for Sunday by a pro-democracy group that has organized three massive marches through central Hong Kong since June.Members of China's paramilitary People's Armed Police force have been training for days across the border in Shenzhen, including on Sunday morning, fueling speculation that they could be sent in to suppress the protests. The Hong Kong police, however, have said they are capable of handling the protests.

Israel's interior minister says he's granted a request by Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib to enter the Israeli-occupied West Bank on humanitarian grounds to visit her 90-year-old grandmother. It's the latest sharp reversal over what'd been a planned visit by Tlaib and fellow Democrat, Rep. Ilhan Omar, to Jerusalem and the West Bank. Members of China’s paramilitary People’s Armed Police have marched and practiced crowd control tactics at a sports complex across from Hong Kong, which some interpreted as a threat against pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong. Chinese state media have only said that the exercises were planned earlier and were not directly related to the unrest in Hong Kong. Actresses America Ferrera and Eva Longoria are leading a group of more than 150 writers, artists and leaders who've written a public “letter of solidarity” to U.S. Latinos after the mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, and an immigration raid in Mississippi. The letter was published in The New York Times and a handful of Spanish-language newspapers.

Hey Podcast. I’ve got something a little different for you today! Jamie Ironmonger’s mission is to get the word about mental health awareness out there, particularly in the emergency services. Like us, he’s a fellow mountain biker. Jamie used to be an armed police officer. His personal stresses were brought on by work related stress, a broken marriage, losing friends and colleagues to suicide and the after effects of a freak accident. The drip, drip, drip of mental stress eventually culminated him in stepping down from armed response and joining the MOD Police. A decision partly due to the fact he was overwhelmed of the stigmatism that speaking up about his mental state, stresses worries could have had. Jamie is now raising money for MIND charity and in 2 weeks time will be attempting to reach the summit of Everest - the highest point in the world and an achievement only around 4000 people in the world have ever achieved since Sir Edmund Hillary did it for the first time in 1953. The highest point is 8848 metres - or the cruising altitude of a passenger jet! It has claimed the lives of 293 people attempting to summit since 1953, an average of 4 per year. As of today he’s raised £5,721 let’s get the number up! If you get chance, please leave a review and don't forget to subscribe!
