Art Hall (of the wonderfully hysterical yet criminally underrated Subversive Cinema podcast) helps me detail the many exploits, formulas, standards and outrageous escapades of do-it-yourself "filmmaker" Neil Breen! Why does he REALLY do what he does? Why does a Tommy Wiseau label not come anywhere close to his wacky nature? Why is it brilliant that he does virtually everything himself? Whelp, this episode was uncomfortable to make. We watched the 90s kids film The Indian in the Cupboard, the story of a young boy who gets a cupboard that turns toys into real people. With this power that no child should wield, he keeps a Native American man as a human pet. It only gets worse from there...Given that Franz Oz, Frank Mashall and Kathleen Kennedy were involved with this movie, you think they'd have been able to get some better actors. Or pay for a better script. We're joined by our hilarious buddy Art Hall. He's an actor, writer director and co-host of the podcasts "That Was Disappointing" and "Subversive Cinema". In this episode, Jeff sits down with local artist Katelynn Knick on a late winter evening outside the Art Hall at 23rd and Walker in The Uptown District and hears from her about some of her current work, about her recent house art show called “You're in my bubble,” and about the increased popularity of artists having exhibitions in their homes and why that is happening. They continue the conversation as Katelynn talks about her life journey, how she got started as an artist and what inspired her to do the work in the way that she does, and how she has evolved as an artist over the past few years. For more information about Katelynn and to see some of her recent and past works, go to www.katelynnknick.com ARTIST STATEMENT Inspired by abstract expressionism, DIY techniques, and daydreaming, I use color combinations, mark-making, and movement to explore the idea of space. Growing up I was always inspired by my father, an artist at heart and a draftsman by career, who would destroy and rebuild the spaces in our home to better suit our interests. Living in a home that was always physically changing changed the way I perceived and interacted with the spaces around me. As an artist, I am inspired by this and find myself creating and altering my own spaces. Each space is ambiguous and unique to the person who enters it. I use playful color combinations and the movement of layering various marks and shapes to create an imagined space that is subtle, yet confrontational and inviting. Ambiguous clusters of marks and colors, thin lines that draw lingering connections, and lumpy overlapping forms all collectively create associations, sensations, and experiences that vary, offering a unique, connection to be formed. Recently I've been using drawings and paintings as maps, to then create objects and installations with the purpose of expanding the experience of abstract painting and creating an environment that can be physically explored. This area of my work allows me to experiment with materials and use the space around me as a site specific, temporary canvas. BIOGRAPHY Born in Tulsa, OK. Currently living and creating in Oklahoma City, OK. Katelynn received her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Oklahoma in 2015. Her work has been exhibited at MAINSITE Contemporary Art and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Oklahoma, and Casp 5 & J Gallery in Texas.
In this segment, we continue the conversation with Helen Opper, Curator at The Art Hall as she talks about how she always knew that she wanted to work in the arts since she was a child. She reflects about her life journey and how she transitioned towards studying Art History and receiving her Bachelor's degree in that field of study and then earned her Master's degree in Museum Studies from New York University. We then hear about how her career progressed in the early years as she had opportunities to work in different areas of the art world and about her experiences in returning to Oklahoma City, where she grew up and graduated from Casady School. After that, Helen shares the story of how she became affiliated with The Art Hall and about how she works very well with the owner of The Art Hall, Anna Russell. The interview progresses with Helen speaking about her unique perspective regarding the art community here in Oklahoma City and how she is very motivated to give opportunities to artists who are at different levels of experience and who may have never had a chance to exhibit their works publicly before. Helen then talks about the diversity of genres of art here in Oklahoma and why she feels that it is so important to provide opportunities to artists who produce all types of art. We wrap up the interview as Helen talks about how she hopes to see a greater diversity of art being shown here in Oklahoma City, and that in her mind, the solution isn't just simply offering more exhibitions as she sees a lot of value in the art community making efforts to bring in art from different perspectives and "to broaden the horizons on what people can see here." For more information about rental rates for utilizing The Art Hall as an event center and about purchasing any of the artwork on display there, please visit their website at www.arthallokc.com
In this segment, Jeff sits down with Helen Opper, Curator of The Art Hall, which is located at The Rise at 23rd and Walker in Oklahoma City. She explains that they have a specific exhibit schedule and feature various works by Oklahoma City artists as well as works from artists out of the Oklahoma City area, but mostly from within the state. We continue hearing from her about how they focus on featuring diverse kinds of works by artists who don't always have opportunities to exhibit at other locations. She also explains that they are open Monday thru Friday from 8 am to 9 pm and from 10 am to 9 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 6 pm on Sundays and that people are welcome to tour The Art Hall anytime during those hours and can come and go as they please since there is no charge for admission. Then, Helen speaks about how they try to show work from as many artists as they can in each exhibit and that they usually do multi-artist exhibitions because of that. She then shares some information about the history of the building itself as well as some details about the renovations that took place to transform it into The Rise as it is now known. She then talks about the fact that they are the only art gallery in the Uptown District and on 23rd Street and about how they are close to The Paseo and to The Tower Theatre, which makes it a convenient stop on the way to or from those locations. She and Jeff also visit some about the uniqueness of The Art Hall and about what it adds to the overall experience of being in the area and about how nice it is to be able to just "drop by" when people are nearby Helen also reflects about what it adds to the overall experience of being in the Uptown area in terms of art and culture. We wrap up the interview as Helen speaks about how The Art Hall is now also available to be rented as an event center, and there are details about that and about purchasing any of the art that is on display there on their website at www.arthallokc.com

We are joined in studio by Helen Opper and Anna Russell, who run a new public art gallery in the Rise development on NW 23rd Street called The Art Hall. With an open artist submission process accepting applications from Oklahoma artists working in all media, they are a nontraditional space located in a public, common area with longer hours than most traditional contemporary art galleries. Helen and Anna curate regular exhibits introducing Oklahoma artists to the immediate community in a pedestrian-friendly revitalized business district.
