What does it take to launch your book and build a fanbase? What do most writers misunderstand about the craft of writing and launching their book? Tim Grahl has dedicated the last 10 years of his life helping over 100 authors – from bestsellers to first time writers – get their books into the hands of more readers. In this episode we talk about smart and authentic marketing steps every writer can take to find their first 1000 readers and give their book a chance of reaching the bestselling lists. We also dive into Tim's memoir Running Down a Dream and talk about writing about devastation and grief.Tim Grahl has worked with authors like Dan Pink, Ramit Sethi, Shawn Coyne, Pamela Slim, Dan and Chip Heath and has launched dozens of books to the top of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and other bestseller lists. He also runs  The Story Grid podcast, where he had his own book edited live by editor Shawn Coyne. Tim has written books on building an audience: Your First 1000 Copies; on building a business: Running Down a Dream, He has also been the architect behind the hugely successful Story Grid writing community and works with Steven Pressfield and Shawn Coyne at Black Irish Publishing.*SHOW NOTES[03:46] Tim talks about the vulnerability of being critiqued live on The Story Grid podcast with Editor Shawn Coyne[09:38] How to build the right audience, and the benefits of learning in public for accountability[12:12] How a successful book launch always starts with a good plan[12:23] What went wrong with The Threshing's launch, and the things Tim did right to market The Sand and Sea (280,000-word epic fantasy) [15:38] Why it's harder to get people to read a book than buy one, and what Tim and his team did to sell The Sand and Sea[19:38] Building an email list as the number one marketing tactic sell and promote your book[23:51] The importance of building a habit and why being consistent is better than doing one big push on anything that you do[26:22] Tim's advice for those who are trying to build their email list, and why you should treat the process as an adventure. I think of it as a rocketship. If you turn off the engine when it's halfway out of that atmosphere, it's going to crash down to earth every single time. So if you can just get it out of the atmosphere, now we can see if it's going to live on its own. And that's how I think of marketing a book is the job of the publisher / author is to get that book out of the atmosphere. And the goal is to get 10,000 people to read the book. At that point, you find out if the book's going to fly on its own because, again, I can force 10,000. I can't force a million or five hundred thousand or a hundred thousand.”*RESOURCESStory Grid Podcast by Shawn Coyne and Tim GrahlRunning Down A DreamBook LaunchMentioned authors:Dan PinkRamit SethiPamela SlimDan and Chip HeathRyan HolidayJames ClearSteven PressfieldJeff GoinsMentioned books of Tim Grahl:Your First 1000Running Down A DreamThe ThreshingOther books mentioned:Tales of Iceland by Stephen MarkelySave The Cat! The War of Art by Steven Pressfield Written and narrated by Leigh Martinuzzi (First published 28.07.2014) “To labor in the arts for any reason other than love is prostitution.” Steven Pressfield. Are you a writer, painter, musician, politician, a person with some deep inner desire to travel a path that you currently are not? Have you ever started something and caved? Have you been meaning to start a creative project but just haven’t quite got to it yet? If that sounds like you then this book just may be for you. Steven Pressfield is the author of The War of Art. He has written many books however this best-seller has to be one of his most popular pieces of work. In it, Steven suggests that resistance is a toxic force that acts as the strongest barrier to us succeeding in what it is our heart desires. We all face it and most probably every day.

As a creative entrepreneur and just a person, there are a lot of things fighting for your attention. There’s family, marketing, sales, and [fill in your own list of tasks]. It doesn’t take long to feel overwhelmed by it all. Enter Kim Christensen from Talk Wordy to Me. She’s a freelance writer, journalist, and a book-loving mama. She mixes writing and mindfulness for a really unique perspective that every entrepreneur can benefit from. Kim started journaling at the age of five, which sparked a love for writing that she has held onto ever since. She’s the co-founder of Loom Journal which helps to inspire the parent-child connection. She also shares great book recommendations online and loves using social media and technology for good. In this episode you will learn: • A mindfulness definition for the everyday mom and creative • The benefit of journaling and putting pen to paper instead of only using technology • What any person can do to improve their writing skills • The importance of reading what you are writing out loud • Three places to look when you want to outsource your writing • The importance of not taking advantage of your friends’ skills and not letting them do the same to you • Tips on being a mindful entrepreneur • Tips to improve your content LINKS http://www.talkingwordy.com/about/ Find Kim on Instagram Loom Journals BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS • Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert • The War of Art: Winning the Inner Creative Battle by Steven Pressfield • Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries by Kory Stamper • Hello, My Name Is Awesome: How to Create Brand Names that Stick by Alexandra Watkins QUOTES One thing that I’ve learned is that ‘balance’ can become just another form of perfectionism, and we’re not seeking balance necessarily. We’re seeking to understand that things will be imbalanced and just trusting ourselves to put our effort and time into the things that are important to us at that time. Because what’s important will change. When you talk about feeling balanced, what you’re really feeling is acceptance of your life being out of balance. We have to become ok with letting some things go. We can do anything we want, but we can’t do everything. Mindfulness isn’t this new trend even though it’s a buzzword now. Mindfulness is in each of us already. It’s not like it’s some new thing you have to learn… it’s just refamiliarizing yourself with yourself. And with the things that help you slow down and feel like yourself and feel whole. It’s just bringing back awareness into what you do and what you think. When we are engaging with technology we are disconnecting from ourselves, intuition, and the people around us. So mindfulness teaches us to be fully present. Mindfulness can go a long way to living the life you want instead of letting life just happen to you. In order to improve your writing, you write. That’s all. It doesn’t even matter where you start or what you write. It’s not about being a good writer or not. It’s about expressing yourself. So, if you can be true to what those feelings are and expressing those, that’s all you need to be a writer. The grammar and all that stuff, that’s so secondary to being a good writer. It’s just being unafraid to express your true self and your true thoughts. Just be you. People can tell when you’re being you or when you’re being a brand in the boring salesy sense of the word. Don’t take advantage of your friends who have a skill set just because they love it and are succeeding in it. Be okay with imperfection and start before you are ready and before you think you have it all together. Starting is the hardest part. You just have to start where you are with what you have and give what you can. It doesn’t have to be everything.

Michael Berry is the writer-director of Stuck, an original character-driven musical set in a New York subway that stars Giancarlo Esposito, whom Breaking Badfans might recognize as the cunning owner of Los Pollos Hermanos. Giancarlo plays a very different character in Stuck: a mysterious, seemingly homeless man prone to break into song, who may or may not be on some kind of cosmic special assignment to impact the lives of the passengers who share his New York subway car. Someone breaking into a song is truly not the strangest thing that happens on subways." - Michael Berry It's an ensemble film, so all the main characters get their solos, and the film includes memorable performances from Amy Madigan (Field of Dreams), Arden Cho (Teen Wolf), Ashanti (Coach Carter), Gerard Canonico (Fred in the Broadway production of Groundhog Day), and Omar Chaparro (Overboard). Michael has a background in theater: He's performed on Broadway in shows like Les Misérablesand Next to Normal, and he credits his theatrical background with training him to get the most out of his indie-sized film budgets. His theater experience also helped him to work with marquee talent when he transitioned into film.  Frontera, the first feature film that Michael directed, includes performances from Ed Harris, Eva Longoria, and Michael Peña. Some of the things that we discuss in this episode include Why the musical is an inherently fantastical genre but one that can also be grounded in reality The recording technique that allowed his performers the freedom to riff on the musical numbers How he was able to shoot a memorable musical with a budget that was a fraction of La La Landand The Greatest Showman What went into recreating a New York subway car and how that helped the crew get ready for shooting in a real New York City subway for a few days How Stuckwas able to depict characters with opposing viewpoints without demonizing anyone I was moved by how the film depicted its assorted characters with depth while undercutting stereotypes.  The film also suggests that to get unstuck we might need each other, even those whose outlook is different than ours, and that reminded me of a certain show. I initially mentioned Stuckin my recap of Louisiana International Film Festival 2018. Stuckwas my favorite film that I saw at LIFF, which is where I met Michael. As mentioned above, Gerard Canonico also has a role in the Broadway production of Groundhog Day. This week's guest is Greg Bennick, a public speaker and Executive Director for the Seattle based non-profit, One Hundred for Haiti. Greg got started as an entertainer in his early teens and has been doing public speaking, communicating ideas and engaging with audiences (as a musician in touring bands & as a speaker) ever since. Highlights From This Episode: Greg started performing around 13 years old and quickly discovered that people pay far more attention to ideas when they are entertained. He currently does public speaking in two main avenues; The corporate, business and special events realm and doing spoken word at independent  (often punk rock related) events around the world. While they seem like very different things... they are really quite similar, as communicating ideas, having people connect with those ideas in an entertaining and engaging way, is something that is really important to Greg. So communicating has always been part of his life. Greg's involvement with Haiti came about differently. Since Greg makes his living speaking, he doesn't have a "day job" and so when the earthquake in Haiti happened in 2010, he had the time and flexibility in his schedule to actually go to Haiti and help. Some friends and him sailed on a sailboat with thousands of pounds of supplies and food and (as far as he knows) were the first private relief boat to hit the southern coast of Haiti. This wasn't his first time to Haiti but after seeing the situation and condition that his friends were in after the earthquake, he decided that he had to do more... and One Hundred for Haiti was born. Using his experience and ideas he has learned from the punk rock scene and the do it yourself culture, he knew he could make a direct impact for Haiti on a couple select issues that they decided to focus on. He wanted to make sure that the model for helping was one that supports and empowers the Haitians to provide the resources and jobs for them to provide the solution themselves, as opposed to "swooping in" as American rescuers and doing the work on the ground that the Haitians can do and want to do themselves. Haitian run on Haitian terms, by Haitians, for Haitians. One Hundred for Haiti simply provides the support, money and supplies to empower the Haitians to provide the solutions for a better quality of life for the people in Haiti. As an organization, they run very lean with all volunteers (no paid staff), so that all the donations go directly to paying for supplies (not salaries and airfare). Their focus is on two initiatives: The Rural Water Project & GTPE (a Creole acronym that stands for the working group for the protection of children). Rural Water Project: In North Haiti, cholera was a huge issue a couple years ago and some friends of his started a group called Peace Work Medical, where they helped the Haitians build cisterns that were fed by naturally occurring springs, where the water could be treated if there was another cholera outbreak. These cisterns were especially effective and when Peace Work was done with their work in Haiti, Greg asked if he could take over the 20+ cisterns they had built. They now have over 40 sites, all requested made by Haitians, built by Haitians and managed by Haitians. Since having started the Rural Water Project, there have been no cholera deaths in the regions where they have helped build these cisterns... and that is what they are trying to maintain. GTPE: In the south portion of Haiti, sexual assault has been rampant and GTPE is the program their anti-sexual assault and education and the only one of it's kind in South Haiti. One Hundred for Haiti is the sole funder of this anti-sexual assault education initiative. One Hundred for Haiti is entirely funded by individual private donations, with the exception of one very generous corporate sponsor, LUSH. Greg has been involved with the Punk Rock scene for a long time and there are a number of band's that have gotten behind them to help raise money during concert tours, like the Seattle band, Wake of Humanity and the Detroit band, Hallow Earth. Greg used to tour with the band Trial for many years. What do you love most about what you do? With the speaking business, Greg loves the challenge and unpredictable nature of owning your own business. With OHfH, Greg loves the idea that a group of dedicated individuals and work together and make a difference. Of all the speaking engagements you have done, from the small grassroots events to Fortune 100 Corporations, which was your favorite speaking gig and why? A retreat event on the East Coast, for a friend he went to high school with for her travel agency (Largay Travel). What was your biggest challenges with running your own business? While Greg loves what he does, finding new business is super challenging, as there is not a huge market for public speakers (like there might be for hairdressers or another service that nearly everyone will use). And if there is a major apocalyptic event, no one is going to be running around asking where they can find an entertaining keynote speaker

As we learned, Nat is in the process of writing a book for men who want to improve their sex lives. The idea is simple: “Guys don't talk about sex, but here's everything they should be talking about with each other.” He describes the process of writing a book, after so much time writing short form blog posts, as an ongoing struggle with himself. He's open about his experience with ''Resistance, a concept introduced in The War of Art. Resistance is your emotional side fighting with your rational desires, which prevents you from doing anything good, creative and artistic. Nat started working against the Resistance with a simple quantitative goal: 60,000 words. Over time, that has evolved into a pure Process Goal. He is influenced by an idea central to Cal Newport's Deep Work: “Long, uninterrupted stretches of complete focus on your most important source of output.” “Get your three or four hours of Deep Work a day, and you'll be amazed by what you can get done.” Often the biggest obstacles to Deep Work are the ways in which we use technology. “Your technology is there for your advantage, not everybody else's … When you start to think of your laptop or your phone as there to help you and make your life better, and not to make you more responsive to what everyone else wants from you, you start treating it differently.” Nat embraces this relationship with technology when he uses Habit List to reinforce his daily Deep Work sessions. He also sets some pretty high stakes for himself. For example, he made a bet with a friend that he would either deliver an early rough draft of his book by end of day Friday, or he would pay $1,000. Talk about accountability! Nat breaks down his writing process was, and how he would tweak it for the future. Actual process: Wrote the outline, started writing individual sections on the outline, and then realized his original outline was broken. He put everything on index cards and reorganized them until he had a new outline that was better. Then, after he filled in that outline he realized there were still a lot of holes. “I basically didn't do enough research up front, because I kept falling into holes.” What Nat wishes he did: Take a whole month or two just to do initial research and draft an outline that is as detailed as possible. Make sure you have read everything you will need to read, and keep it organized. Then, you can just start writing. ***** One of the articles Nat is most known for is: How to Travel for Six Months and Come Back Richer. In it, he offers a Runway Calculator and goes over the calculations you'd need to make before making big life transitions like moving overseas to travel. The calculater helps you see how much passive income you'd need to afford this lifestyle. One way Nat created passive income for himself was through an information product. “If you know something that not everybody knows, there's most likely a way you can sell that information.” Books are the original information product. Courses are a popular choice now. Nat developed a product called Programming for Marketers. He wrote a great article detailing the process of launching and marketing this course: $58,150 in 5 Months: How to Build a Lifestyle Business Step-by-Step (Emails, Tools, Everything). To get the initial traffic to Programming for Marketers, they started with a landing page detailing what courses would be offered in the future. They marketed it on Internet Marketing-related sites like Growth Hackers and Inbound. This generated a lot of interest. When someone signed up, they were sent an email (using Zapier) that encouraged them to refer a friend, and they received bonus material for referring a friend. This referral process added about 30% to their total sign-ups. Nat doesn't do anything do anything fancy to drive traffic to his site, and yet he averages 10,000 people every day. 70% of that is organic! He doesn't use an SEO plug-in, and he doesn't do extensive key word optimization. So how does he do it? Nat relates good SEO to being healthy. What someone needs to do to be healthy is extremely simple, but there is a lot of money invested in convincing people that being healthy is complicated. The same is true for SEO. “SEO is actually extremely easy.” The simple approach to SEO: Write an article on a topic being searched for Answer that question in a way that is enjoyable to read and takes care of their problem. Drive some initial traffic – just a couple hundred visits – to signal to Google that it is a valuable article I had a blast talking with Nat, and I hope you did too. These conversations are absolutely packed full of Nat's personality, the processes he has developed and a lot of really great resources!   SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: What is Nat's process for writing his book? 126 | Emotional Distress Syndrome Emotional Distress Syndrome Emotional Distress Syndrome, discovered and coined my James Ochoa himself. James had training working with people with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In time he saw similarities in some of his clients and the people with PTSD with one exception. For some, it wasn’t going away. Some of his clients, were not getting better in the way people with PSTD generally did. These clients of his suffered from the exact same thing: Chronic breakdowns Lack of self-worth They felt bullied They were all misunderstood He determined that for these people he would have to rebuild their internal sense of self. EDS is manageable and treatable thanks to the work James is doing. Coaching Session James has difficulty being consistent with singular systems. He tries many things such as post-it notes, phone apps, etc. He prefers to write things down. Currently has four systems and he is not able to follow through with any of them. He finds himself not having enough time. Eric has James scrounge up a pen and paper to write the following A Accountability Who are you accountable to? T Timers Timing tasks makes you more accountable and keep you focused Make predictions as to how long a task will take R Reminders Include the why with the what I Inputs To do lists, calendar, email, voice mail, pile#1 Pile#2…. P PlanningProcessProcesses Streamline and improve. Evaluate what works and what does not work James was excited and eager to begin using this system when he left the show.   About James Ochoa James Ochoa is on a mission. In a way he always has been. He was born the seventh of eight children in Houston, Texas and almost immediately began to feel the faint hum that all ADHD sufferers feel. It would be safe to say that his journey to find answers for his issues began as early as is humanly possible. Then, at the age of four, he had a traumatic accident that would alter his life forever. While playing on his parent’s car, he fell, hitting his head on the concrete. After the doctors examined him they were not hopeful, and everyone prepared for the worst. While in the hospital, James had what he describes as his first spiritual experience, one that he can still recall with great clarity and emotion. His father had been in Vietnam working a construction job, and he took a leave from his contract to come visit James in the pediatric ward of their local hospital. As his father walked toward him, James remembers seeing a blue orb-like structure above his bed. In his mind, this was a sign and he knew it immediately. His father didn’t see the blue orb, of course, but James remembers that he was stunned to hear James announce, “Dad, I’m not gonna die. I’m here for a reason.” As it turned out, many decades would pass before James truly understood what that moment and that proclamation meant. In fact, it mostly eluded him until the summer of 1989 when he was working at an ADHD summer program for kids. “It was total chaos,” he says. “But the lights and intrigue that these kids came to the table with was like…Oh my God, they’re brilliant and we’re not seeing it.” He immediately recognized his calling and resolved to spend his life trying to find answers for himself and others. For almost two decades, now, he has done just that. His work with patients and extensive personal study of the neuroscience of ADHD has allowed him to find answers that work. His new book Focused Forward: Navigating the Storms of Adult ADHD is just the latest mile on a many-long miles journey he is on. His discoveries and success in his own life and with his patients have made him a much in demand speaker these days. James lives in Austin, Texas with his wife, Edie. They have two sons, Gabe, 25, and Jules, 20.
