Dr. Brian Laslie is the Command Historian at the United States Air Force Academy. He previously served as the Deputy Command Historian at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and as the Historian, 1st Fighter Wing, Langley Air Force Base, home to the 94th and 27th Fighter Squadrons. A 2001 graduate of The Citadel: The Military College of South Carolina and a historian of air and space power studies, Dr. Laslie received his Master's degree from Auburn University Montgomery in 2006 and his Doctorate in history from Kansas State University in 2013. His first book The Air Force Way of War: U.S. Tactics and Training after Vietnam (Kentucky, 2015) was published in the Spring of 2015 and landed on the 2016 Chief-of-Staff of the Air Force's Reading List and the 2017 Royal Air Force's Chief of the Air Staff Reading List. Dr. Laslie is currently finishing work on his fourth book manuscript as well as serving as the Air Power and Aviation Series Editor for the University Press of Kentucky.

At this center, she received some of her best hands on training and contact with victims. She went on to work for the Department of Corrections, the Secretary of State and an internship with the FBI during the Pan American Games in Indianapolis, IN.Her training and education led her to the Crime Commission and an assignment with Operation Weed and Seed, a federal task force that combines federal, state and local law enforcement to combat crime in dangerous areas.During the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Sheryl was the Coordinator of a state wide response team formed to assist victims of crime during the games. When a bomb was detonated at the Olympic site, Sheryl and her team were on the scene within 45 minutes giving aid to over 100 victims.Along with becoming the State Director of Mothers Against Driving, Sheryl attained the rank of Captain in the Special Ops Division of the Reserve Unit with the Fulton County, GA Sheriff's Office, and was the Director of police training in the Atlanta District Attorney's Office under their Domestic Violence Project.While Sheryl was investigating for Cobb County, GA Juvenile Court, she began teaching college part time. In 2012, a 2004 Infiniti QX56 SUV driven by Solomon Mathenge t-boned a Dodge Caravan in Los Angeles, resulting in the death of the driver, Hilario's wife, and daughters Stephanie, 4 and Hilda, 6. Solomon insisted that his brakes were not working properly. Originally charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter, Solomon later joined the case as an additional plaintiff, separately represented, against Nissan North America, Inc., due to the discovery of a history of braking issues in Infiniti vehicles. Nissan knew as early as 2003 that select models were equipped with a defective braking software with a "delta stroke sensor," which unnecessarily activated the car's optimized hydraulic braking. Despite this knowledge, Nissan failed to recall the vehicle or notify all vehicle owners. Jerome witnessed first-hand how lawyers could make a difference in people's lives. The trial lawyers who represented his family successfully held the responsible party accountable for the tragedy, and he knew then that he wanted to be a trial lawyer. His road toward achieving that goal was not easy, but hard work has never been an obstacle for him. Jerome was born in Alexander City, Alabama - a hard-working, cotton mill town that taught him the values of persistence, keeping his word, and doing his best. If you want to be a psychologist but are considering a non-clinical route, this is a great episode to listen to. Social Psychology, just like clinical or counseling psychology, is only one of the many niches in the psychology world.  This area of psych explores why people do what they do, why we think what we think--biases, perception, preferences, familiarity (to name a few phenomena).  To be a social psychologist also probably means doing research, meaning you're also probably an experimental psychologist.  My guest today is Clarissa Arms-Chavez, Ph.D, a tenured associate professor and social experimental psychologist at Auburn University.  She and I discuss: social psych, working in academia, clinical psych, teaching at a university, tenure, impostor syndrome, and being a department chair.  She also gives advice to undergraduates thinking about going to grad school! She earned her M.S. in Experimental Psychology and her Ph.D. in Social Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Texas at El Paso. She has thirteen years of experience teaching undergraduate courses such as introduction to psychology, social psychology, social cognition, the psychology of prejudice & hate, and writing in psychology. She also has ten years of experience teaching advanced social psychology at both the Masters level (Auburn University at Montgomery) and the Doctorate level (Auburn University). Guest: Pulitzer Prize Nominated Sheryl McCollum Director, Cold Case Investigative Research Institute Sheryl McCollum began her career with training at the Rape Crisis Center at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA. At this center, she received some of her best hands on training and contact with victims. She went on to work for the Department of Corrections, the Secretary of State and an internship with the FBI during the Pan American Games in Indianapolis, IN. Her training and education led her to the Crime Commission and an assignment with Operation Weed and Seed, a federal task force that combines federal, state and local law enforcement to combat crime in dangerous areas. During the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Sheryl was the Coordinator of a state wide response team formed to assist victims of crime during the games. When a bomb was detonated at the Olympic site, Sheryl and her team were on the scene within 45 minutes giving aid to over 100 victims. Along with becoming the State Director of Mothers Against Driving, Sheryl attained the rank of Captain in the Special Ops Division of the Reserve Unit with the Fulton County, GA Sheriff's Office, and was the Director of police training in the Atlanta District Attorney's Office under their Domestic Violence Project. While Sheryl was investigating for Cobb County, GA Juvenile Court, she began teaching college part time. She became an International Law Enforcement Trainer for the Department of State. She had the opportunity to create two Cold Case Squads after attending the prestigious Henry Lee Institute and recently completed training as a Crime Scene Tech for the state of GA, providing value to her position with Pine Lake Police Department Cold Case Squad. With over 25 years of experience and education, Sheryl is currently the Director of the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute, which is a collaboration between Auburn University Montgomery, Faulkner University and Bauder College. This collaboration brings together researchers, practitioners, students and the criminal justice community to develop new capabilities and work collectively to advance research, training and techniques in solving cold cases. The objectives of CCIRI are to provide the means, resources and guidance for Criminal Justice students throughout all Kaplan Higher Education to determine the solvability of actual unsolved crimes. Join us for "Lee's Alabama Boys at the Battle of Chancellorsville" presented by Ben H. Severance on Thursday, July 17th, at 12 noon at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Civil War historians generally agree that the Battle of Chancellorsville was General Robert E. Lee's military masterpiece. Between May 1-4, 1863, Lee outmaneuvered and soundly defeated Union forces. Contributing greatly to this outcome was the performance of a dozen regiments of Alabama infantrymen. From spearheading Stonewall Jackson's famous flank attack on May 2, to repelling a powerful Union counterattack on May 3, Alabamians played a major role in the battle's most critical phases. For Lee's "Alabama Boys", Chancellorsville was one of their finest moments. At the conclusion of the program, Archives Chief Curator Bob Bradley will show and discuss the flag of the 5th Alabama Infantry. The flag was captured during the Battle of Chancellorsville by the 111th Pennsylvania Volunteers. The flag was returned to the State of Alabama on March 25, 1905. Ben H. Severance is an assistant professor of history at Auburn University Montgomery. He received his Ph.D. in 2002 from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville). In 2005, he published Tennessee Radical Army: the State Guard and Its Role in Reconstruction, 1867-1869. He is currently working on a photographic history of Alabamians during the Civil War.
