In this essay, Rhiannon Firth reads from an article published in DOPE Magazine issue 22, which is part 2 of a 2-part summary of her latest book, Disaster Anarchy: Mutual Aid and Radical Action, published by Pluto Press last Autumn. In it, she offers a response to the question: Do anarchist approaches to disaster relief have more to offer beyond state-friendly 'social capital', mopping up the failures of the austere neoliberal state? How do anarchists engaged in disaster relief stay radical, rather than just papering over the cracks in a failing neoliberal system? Rhiannon Firth is Lecturer in Sociology of Education at IOE, UCL's faculty of Education and Society. Her most recent publication is Disaster Anarchy: Mutual Aid and Radical Action (Pluto 2022) and she is soon to publish the co-edited volume Utopian and Dystopian Explorations of Pandemics and Ecological Breakdown: Entangled Futurities (Palgrave, 2024). Ep. #218 – The Magic of Angels an Interview with Corin Grillo, Author of, Angel Wealth Magic. I am so delighted and excited to welcome this stellar guest to my show. Corin Grillo is so full of energy. We had an intriguing, fun-filled and inspirational chat. Corin's first encounter with angels literally dropped into her life in the form of a bird on the hood of her car while she was driving in LA. A friend of Corin's treated her to an Angel reading for her birthday. After an hour of this reading she was encouraged to talk to the angels as if, “they are right there in the room with you.” And so she began the conversation with the angels not really sure where that would lead her or how it would manifest. And the thing that dropped out of the sky and literally landed on the hood of her car in LA was a hurt little bird. She wasn't sure what to do with the bird so she drove around with it asking for guidance. What occurred next was a mind-blowing miracle from the angels. Corin describes this experience like a slap across “my whole physical psyche. It was magical, intense and inspiring." From that point forward Corin's life changed. She went on to explore life with the guidance of angels. She shares that at first she had angel shame because as a licensed psychotherapist she wasn't sure how she would be received by her clients or her associates. Ultimately what she noticed is that the most impressive thing that changed for her was her inside voice. She used to wake up wanting to die and that quickly dissolved and was replaced by an optimistic and encouraging voice. She also noticed a lightness in her heart and the strength to start listening to the wisdom inside of herself. What she heard inspired her to take radical action to change her life. What might Radical Action look like for you? You may be called to let go of something that you love. For Corin it meant letting go of her private practice of being a psychotherapist. This radical action started for her first by listening internally and then taking action. Corin and I both agree that it's about giving yourself the space to emerge and to pay attention to the nudging. At times it can feel like you are flying blind. It takes trust and patience. Sometimes waiting and listening are the most powerful actions you can take. Announcements Sanctuary Park Defendants Statement A Statement from the Aston Park Defendants in Response to APD's January 11th Press Release -January 14th, 2023: "On Wednesday, January 11th, 2023, Asheville Police Department (APD) issued a widely circulated press release stating that 120,000 lbs of “trash” were removed from two “vacant” homeless encampments in West Asheville. We believe that this press release is part of an ongoing misinformation campaign by the City of Asheville to justify evicting encampments, fracturing communities of care, and broadly criminalizing unsheltered homelessness without creating real solutions. APD claims that the two camps were vacant, but admits that over the course of two weeks, they forced the people living there to leave. “Services” were offered to the people displaced, but were limited to rides, sharing information about local shelters, and helping people register for a housing list with a months-to-years long wait for placement. We question the utility of these services to people who are chronically homeless and unsheltered. According to the city of Asheville's 2022 Point in Time count, 232 (36%) of people without housing were unsheltered, defined as “sleeping outside or in other locations not suitable for human habitation.” These people are criminalized with trespassing laws and ordinances restricting camping. Yet, limited capacity and other barriers to shelter access often leave people with no other choices. When people camp together in larger groups, they are able to share resources and build community. Providing these camps with basic waste disposal and sanitation services would eliminate the health risks used to justify their removal. Instead, people camping are blamed for these conditions, then forced to relocate with only what they can carry. Tents, shelters, and other necessities must be left behind, and are relabeled “trash.” APD, city government and anti–homeless businesses use this, coupled with overblown and misleading claims about violent crime in camps, as justification for displacing unsheltered people again and again. Since the 11th, APD evicted two more camps in East Asheville, just ahead of a cold front bringing ice and snow. Camp evictions in February and December of 2021 under similar conditions sparked widespread public outrage. Despite this, conditions for people living unsheltered have mostly remained unchanged. Misinformation about “litter” and crime, alongside unfulfilled promises of long-term solutions, have redirected public attention from ongoing violence. Not only are camp sweeps violent, they are an ineffective and expensive strategy for managing unsheltered homelessness. There are more humane, longer-term and lower-cost alternatives. More on this, along with other updates, coming soon. In the meantime, check out our website, avlsolidarity.noblogs.org, for more information including links to sources cited for this statement. Please share and spread the word! Inmates at SeaTac Detention Center are facing cruel and illegal conditions, without adequate access to medical care, food, and communication. You're invited to join a phone zap on Tuesday Jan 17, from 8am-2pm, calling once or as many times as you can, asking that the Associate Warden's Office take immediate steps to correct the situation. Script and details in our show notes Here is a script you can use: "I'm calling on behalf of inmates at SeaTac Federal Detention Center, asking for the leadership to address the cruel and *illegal* conditions at the facility. Without a long-term warden and the presence of leadership at the lunch line, it's been difficult for inmates to directly address concerns themselves. Because you've silenced them, I'm calling on their behalf to let you know that many people across the nation are watching SeaTac right now. Please take immediate steps to improve conditions for every inmate at SeaTec by providing: A minimum of 2,000 calories/day A doctor on-site at the facility Immediate access to prescription medications Immediate access to dental care Increased email access A warden assigned to the facility" . ... . .. This week's guest is a friend of the podcast, Dr Gail Bradbrook. Best known for her role in co-founding Extinction Rebellion, Gail is one of our nation's (and our world's) deepest thinkers on radical change: what will it take to shift the juggernaut of predatory capitalism from the orgy of extraction, consumption and destruction that has brought us to the edge of crisis, and instead turn it towards a celebration of life in all its forms? Gail is also a leading beacon of practical activism - how can we bring the collective conversation to bear on the existential crises of our time? In our conversation, Gail honours the teachers that have helped her to find balance and insight, and to find practical, clear-eyed hope amidst all the potential for despair. We go on to explore her work in BCAN (see below) and, particularly, to explore the nature of horizontal organising. In a world where half the (western) population is wedded to the old hierarchical, patriarchal structures of top-down dominance, what happens in the other half when we experiment with other, less culturally familiar ways of being? Extinction Rebellion was one of the biggest, and most public expressions of horizontal organising in the modern contemporary world. A great deal of theory was put into practice and the results were often visible in newspaper headlines. Recorded a mere handful of days after the 'We Quit" press release from XR, we look at some of the lessons learned, and how we might do things differently next time. BIO:Dr Gail Bradbrook has been researching, planning, and training for mass civil disobedience since 2010 and is a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion (XR). Since its launch in October 2018, XR has spread around the world so that now, there are more than 1150 XR groups in 75 countries. Gail has trained in molecular biophysics, and her talk on the science of the ecological crisis, the psychology of active participation, and the need for civil disobedience has gone viral and been inspired many to join XR. She is from Yorkshire, the mother of two boys, the daughter of a coal miner, and was named by GQ as one of the top 50 influencers in the UK, and honoured in the 2020 Women's Hour Power list for her part in instigating a rebellion against the British Government.More recently, she is one of the cofounders of the Be the Change Affinity Network of XR activists exploring ways to shift our cultural rigidity into something regenerative and distributive by design. Gail is a genuine visionary leader - one of one of the deepest, most enlightened thinkers we know; living at the leading edge of change and exploring radical answers to the questions of our time. She's also deeply spiritual and emotionally thoughtful, and it's always an enormous joy to explore with her the big questions of our time: what are we here for and how can we shift the entire nature of our culture in practical ways? I'm sure that many people coming out of this holiday season, returning from visiting relatives will wonder: “couldn't we abolish the capitalist family structure?” We've got great news! We're happy to present this conversation between Scott and Sophie Lewis, author of Abolish The Family: A Manifesto of Care and Liberation. In this episode, Sophie speaks about the book, the ideas and inspirations she's pulling from, the critique that the family form not only passes property and generationally allows concentrations of it, but simultaneously limits our horizons of care to these small, private and often abusive relationships. Here we also find ideas of Child Liberation, a challenge to the state form and capitalism, and an invitation to imagine beyond what we've been taught is the natural nucleus of human relationships in what turns out to be a long lineage of ideas cast back through Black feminisms of the 70's and beyond. Anyway, there was a lot here and we hope you enjoy. For a related chat, check out Scott's July 10, 2022 interview with Sophie on the show, and you can find more recordings and essays at her site, LaSophieLle.org and support her freelance writing on her patreon. Announcements Phone Zap for Shinewhite BACKGROUND: Joseph “Shine White” Stewart is a long-time incarcerated writer and organizer who is known, among other things, for promoting interracial unity among black and white prisoners in North Carolina as a way to forward their shared resistance against the prison industrial complex and for encouraging abolitionists on the outside to center prisoners' demands and resistance in their work. He has most recently been central to prisoners' organizing efforts to combat racist CO brutality at Alexander Correctional Institution and the extended lockdown at Bertie Correctional Institution. As one might imagine, he is no stranger to political repression, and he has been repeatedly transferred, held in solitary confinement for years at a time, and physically brutalized as the system has attempted to silence him. On November 3, in response to his most recent organizing, Shine White was transferred to Granville Correctional Institution in Butner, NC, where he was placed in restrictive housing. When he arrived, he was placed in a filthy, unsanitary cell which staff refused to allow him to clean and denied access to his property, including legal paperwork related to pending motions in a lawsuit his is pursuing which he was therefore unable to put in the mail on time. Staff have even restricted his access to paper. As of his last contact with Solidarity Beyond the Walls, Shine White is still being housed in unsanitary conditions and still does not have his property. He has requested that SBW support him by organizing a phone zap on his behalf. NCDPS Division of Prisons Central Region Director Loris Sutton 919-582-6125 (direct office line) OR 919-803-0713 (cell phone) OR 919-838-4053 (Central Region main office line); Standard and Performance Director Cynthia Thornton 919-838-4000 (Division of prisons main office line) Remember that repeat calls are welcome, as the more calls come in, the more likely it is that our demands on Shine White's behalf will be met. WHAT TO SAY: Here is a script you can use if you aren't sure what to say when you call:“Hello. I am calling on behalf of Joseph Stewart, OPUS number 0802041. When he was transferred to Granville CI on November 3, Mr. Stewart was placed in restrictive housing in unsanitary conditions and denied his property, including legal paperwork that needed to be put in the mail no later than November 4. Both of these are violations of NCDPS policy and procedure. I am calling to demand that Mr. Stewart be released from restrictive housing, be placed in a clean cell with access to supplies to keep it that way, and that all of his property be returned immediately.” Support Colombian Uprising Prisoners There is still repression being felt by those swept up by the state during the 2021 National Strike in Cali, Colombia and there's a fundraising effort for the Paso del Aguante 6 who are facing up to 50 years in prison for participating in the strike. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Does the US public support radical action against factory farming in the name of animal welfare?, published by Neil Dullaghan on November 9, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary Surveys from Sentience Institute (2020, 2017) and Norwood & Murray (2018) showed substantial levels of support in the US for banning slaughterhouses (~39-43% support when including those who chose no opinion/don't know). Evidence of this considerable public support for radical action has been suggested as a reason for animal advocates to push stronger messages and bolder proposals against animal agriculture. A preregistered study that we present here casts doubt on how substantial support for such radical action against factory farming actually is. In an experiment of 700 US survey respondents, we found 7.85% support (95% CI [4.3% - 14%]), when arguments framed around animal welfare for and against are presented, and respondents are asked to explain their reasoning. We also found 20.41% support (95% CI [11%-34.7%]) in the control condition when respondents were not asked to explain their reasoning. In the second survey of 2,698 US respondents, the weighted results show 15.7% (95% CI [13%-18.8%]) support for a policy banning slaughterhouses, when arguments framed around animal welfare for and against are presented, and respondents are asked to explain their reasoning. The attitudes expressed by poll respondents in response to broad questions may not be reliable indicators of actual support for specific policies or messages. It would be better to test people's responses to more detailed messages and policy proposals, paying special attention to how radical messages compare to counterfactual moderate messages. Results: Attitudes towards a proposal to ban slaughterhouses In July and August of 2022, we ran two online surveys, one with an experimental design. In both, respondents were presented with a proposal that included a definition of slaughterhouses and arguments framed around animal welfare for and against the proposal. In the survey experiment, the treatment condition asked respondents to explain their reasoning, with this prompt removed in the control condition. In the second survey, only the treatment condition was presented. The question wording was as follows: Supporters of this policy say that slaughterhouses should be banned because it is wrong to kill animals. There is no way to kill animals for their meat which is “humane,” so this should be banned. Opponents of this policy say that people have a right to eat meat if they choose. The practices in place are humane and produce quality meat for consumers at an affordable price. It is possible to prevent animals being killed inhumanely without banning slaughterhouses. Do you support or oppose this proposed policy? [Support/Oppose/Don't Know] [Treatment condition] Please explain your reasons for the answer you gave above In the survey experiment, with a sample of 700 US respondents: We found much lower levels of support in both control (20.41%, 95% CI [11%-34.7%]) and intervention (7.85%, 95% CI [4.3% - 14%]) conditions compared to the Sentience Institute (2020, 2017) and Norwood & Murray (2018) studies (43% when including “No Opinion” responses). (More results in the appendix.) In both the unweighted and weighted analyses, support was lower in the intervention condition than in the control condition. The share of “Don't Know” respondents increased in the intervention in the unweighted analysis, while in the weighted analysis, the lost support seems to come directly from people choosing to oppose instead. Weighted results for a proposal banning slaughterhouses (control and treatment) The second survey had a sample of 2,698 US respondents (after filtering based on an honesty check and a basic attention/comprehension check). We pr...

In this episode we share the lesson we learned from a doll. Yes - a doll. The Stretch Armstrong doll or action figure that I played with in the 70s could be stretched from ruler size to yard stick or greater size. He was built to do that. You are like him - built with internal friction that results in greatness. The manufacturer engineered him to use viscosity to give kids pleasure during play. That was his purpose for existence. How many times have you heard someone say, "Fake it until you make it?" Well. I had an epiphany the other day. I heard a voice within say, "Faith it." I just had to talk about that this week. We need to have more faith and walk in radical action. Realize that you are the author of your own life, know that you have choices, and the best decision is a decision with action tied to it. Listen in as we expound upon "Faith it until you make it." Are you crystal clear as to what your natural superpowers are? Coach Brigitte is here to help you figure that out. Alexi Panos is a best-selling author, leadership and embodiment trainer, humanitarian, and the host of the Unleashed podcast. She is insanely committed to empowering others to activate and own their greatness and live a life they are completely OBSESSED with. Her mission is to reinvent “personal development” into what she and her husband call the EMERGENT WISDOM MOVEMENT–creating a container of transformational work that elicits a remembrance of what we’ve always known…and who we’ve always known we are. She is the co-founder of The Bridge Method workshops (which she developed with her husband Preston Smiles) and the founder of two non-profit organizations — E.P.I.C. and The Sisters Society). And has authored the books 50 WAYS TO YAY! and NOW OR NEVER both by Simon & Schuster. If that wasn’t impressive enough, she was also named as one of FORBES Top 11 Women Entrepreneurs, INC's magazines TOP 10 ENTREPRENEUR'S CHANGING THE WORLD, one of Origin Magazines TOP 100 CREATIVES CHANGING THE WORLD, and is a featured expert in the films THE ABUNDANCE FACTOR, RISEUP and AGE OF THE ENTREPRENEUR. So, I’ve been a big fan of Alexi’s ever since hearing her speak on a podcast years ago. Her energy and drive is so inspiring, and what she’s built in her business and life is pretty dreamy—as you’ll hear in our conversation. In this episode, she shares her wild past life in the music industry touring with top artists like JaRule, and as a television host for E! News, and what inspired her to leave it all behind to start a business, what it looked like for her to make the bold move to leave the entertainment industry and completely reinvent her career and life, the humble beginnings of her business, the biggest challenges she faced, and why her mindset was so key to her staying the course, her approach to putting her wisdom and resources out into the world and how she leveraged all of her gifts to make it happen, why being fully authentic and aligning with her truth and her real personality have been key to her becoming known for her work, how she bootstrapped her business on credit and the super empowering, positive outlook she has on betting on ourselves in this way, why she says it’s so important to break free from your online influences and teachers to find your own voice, and so much more! Funkquest- Season 2- Episode 20- Ann Z v Kimya DennisAfter starting her FunkQuest journey with a walkover, this episode was Ann Zaprazny's first debut into the real game. Dr Kimya Nuru Dennis was, in this case, a veteran.Ann began the game with Question 1; about her knowledge of CPR (Cardiopulmmonary Resuscitation). She learned how to do it for a babysitting couse when younger and although not used for used for years, felt sure it would kick in when needed.Kimya was excited about the fact that technology is helping to reach those who are in need.Question 2: Ann found that she rolled her eyes, mostly because her children were very critical of her even when she has been helping them. (Just Typical).Kimya answered the same question, rolling her eyes at people who constantly say things like 'we're all in the same boat' especially in the times of Coronavirus. She felt that to have a unifying experience, people need to understand their differences.Question 3 was about Radical Action - and Kimya felt that being able to challenge the Key Decision makers of the world and speaking out was good.Ann was asked where she would like to visit - citing Iceland and Alaska as places she would go.Kimya chose the Elephant Icon for her 4th question. He prefers to be 'stuck in time' in the here and now. From the happenings of the Corona Pandemic, Anne talked about what we might learn to 'stop us using more than we need'.Question 5 and Kimya was regretting having given up learning a second language, but felt that with more resources and perhaps a push for people to learn differnt languages (not just mainstream french, spanish, german) it would help combat Xenophobia. In her final question; Ann told her motherhood story of staying awake more than 24 hours, giving birth.

What happens when you don't put fuel in your tank? Whether it's your car, your cell phone or your self - stuff doesn't work when you don't power it up properly. In today's Monday Momtra, I'm going rogue from my usual note taking and outline and just spitting what comes to my mind in the moment around the topic of getting angry when things don't work (when we didn't take the time to care for them). So my advice this week is to figure out what you can plug into, what you can use as fuel to support you and take massive action to make sure you take care of you!
