Change may be inevitable, but it's far from easy. That's especially true in the therapy field. Part of my own shift is a greater focus (on this podcast and IRL) on system-wide transformation, especially in the group practice realm. How do we bridge the gap between employees and owners when both feel overworked and underpaid?  Sociocracy could be the answer. But first, what the heck is sociocracy? Ted Rau, PhD., co-founded Sociocracy For All (SoFA), a nonprofit that makes decentralized, consent-based governance accessible to workplaces, organizations, and communities. He knows a lot about how sociocracy works in principle and practice, having become a practitioner of the governance style as a member of an intentional living community. GUEST BIO Ted Rau is an advocate, trainer, and consultant for self-governance with a focus on sociocracy. After earning a PhD in linguistics and working in academia, he co-founded Sociocracy For All in 2016, a now global organization with 250 members. Ted consults with mission-driven organizations, teaches, and actively participates in Sociocracy For All's work. A transgender man and father of five, Ted has lived in Massachusetts since 2010. He is the co-author of three books on self-governance, including Many Voices One Song (2018) and Collective Power (2023), and is currently writing on governance and wisdom. *** SUPPORT THE SHOW Conversations With a Wounded Healer Merch Join our Patreon for gifts & perks Shop our Bookshop.org store and support local booksellers Share a rating & review of this show *** Let's be friends! In this episode of the Agile Uprising podcast, host Andy Cleff chats with Simon Holzapfel about how humans organized and learned together before industrial-age practices disrupted our natural patterns.  Through examples from anthropology, biology, and neuroscience, they explore what ancient societies and our own biology can teach us about effective collaboration at scale. The conversation challenges common assumptions about organizational hierarchy and control, suggesting that agile principles aren't new inventions, but rather a rediscovery of how humans naturally work and learn together.  For leaders and change agents, this episode offers practical steps toward creating organizations that work with, rather than against, human nature. Summary In this episode, thought partner and podcast producer Nayantara Premakumar joins hosts Carolina and Vidhya to reflect and update listeners on our retreat and recent milestones. We share our struggles resisting racial/gendered capitalism through cooperative, decentralized, and transparent governance and ownership structures. This includes a discussion of fiscal sponsorship and technocratic tools for decision-making. We also highlight upcoming changes to the podcast, including efforts to tie together our personal, professional, and political analyses; to acknowledge the lands we've inhabited; and to explicitly prompt reflection and action. Episode 5 transcript Notes 01:30: It was a post on NPOCunicorns | People of Color Nonprofit Professionals, not a Facebook ad 17:21: Is Fiscal Sponsorship Right for You? gets at some of our hesitation. It was, however, uncritically adopted by nonprofit organizations despite the nature and ostensible purpose of their work being entirely different. Of course, military responses do have their place (e.g., Black Panthers, Zapatista). 39:09: The expansion is not exactly exponential in that it does not reflect the change between 3 to the 4th power and 3 to the 3rd power. I think we can all agree Gen Z has lofty ideals and a spring in their step for social change that makes some of us old fogeys a little uncomfortable. But could they be the generation that deconstructs the nonprofit industrial complex while the rest of us stand by and watch the show? Today, I'm joined by Sarah Medina Camiscoli, Assistant Professor of Law at Rutgers and the founding co-director of the Peer Defense Project. Sarah shows us how these visionary zoomers are experimenting with entirely new ways to build mission-driven organizations, from mutual aid networks to worker-self-directed nonprofits and beyond. My fave takeaway - the power of Gen Z isn't necessarily in the benjamins they can raise, but rather in their ability to multiply their following.  They've done what we Gen Xers and millennials have merely hoped to accomplish–leveraging digital community and grassroots solidarity to advance justice. (Sarah even gave me a template to start integrating some of these "prefigurative politics" into my own organization without fully disrupting the board and funders.) So whether you lead an established nonprofit empire or are just a wannabe ally looking to support the next generation of world-changers, listen in on the discussion as Sarah breaks down everything you need to know. Stick around to the end for her best tips on bringing Zoomers onto your board, doing right by youth staffers, and opening up decision-making to a consent-based approach in your organization. Listen to my new episode with Ted Rau where we discuss sociocracy as a governance model relying on self-management and consent-based decision-making. Ted is an advocate, trainer and consultant for self-governance and his main focus is sociocracy. After his PhD in linguistics and work in academia, he co-founded 'Sociocracy For All' and spends his days consulting, teaching and leading the organization as an executive director. He is a co-author of multiple books on self-governance, 'Many Voices One Song' (2018) and 'Who Decides Who Decides' (2021). In a few weeks he will publish a brand new book called ‘Collective Power. Patterns for A Selforganized Future'. “For me, the personal development and growth within the sociocratic community boils down to how to be a self-responsible human being. How do I say ‘yes' and mean ‘yes'? How do I say ‘no' and mean ‘no'? How to be clear about what my boundaries are? In sociocracy we basically learn to object but also learn to say, ‘yeah', whatever, that works for me. Do it, fine, without having an attitude about it, just rolling with everything else unless I have to say ‘no'. And that is treating your ego in a healthy way, without making your ego too big and also not making it too small. I mean as soon as you have that interface clear it makes you free to choose to be in a healthy relationship with others, without spilling your own stuff on other people. That was a humongous learning point for me because interdependence for me was really hard. You have to be self-sufficient, but how are you self-responsible and self-sufficient and then choose to cooperate at the same time? To me, that was a polarity that was too hard to hold in my mind at the beginning. And now I feel like I got it how to be me and us at the same time. So that is what I have grown on and I am still growing on in sociocracy.” – Ted Rau Listen and enjoy!

What can the realm of self-management and new ways of working learn from the realm of polyamory, Relationship Anarchy and open relationships? And how can practices in self-organising work teams help us improve our personal relationships? Ted Rau is the co-founder of Sociocracy for All and author of books like ‘Who Decides Who Decides?' and ‘Many Voices One Song'. In his personal life, he has been in monogamous relationships and, for the last seven years, in open relationships. We explore the parallels across personal and professional relationships, like what it means to ‘be in choice', consent decision-making as a mindset more than a process, holding multiple roles, and agreement-making. As a certified Human Potential Coach and Sociocracy trainer, she shares insight into how she brings nature-informed frameworks and a holistic toolkit to help individuals and forward-thinking organisations balance nervous systems to establish safety and avoid distraction and dysfunction to make real traction in creating a positive impact. She speaks to living an enchanted life and ecological patterns brought into social settings to encourage a diversity of perspectives and governance hierarchies to make decisions with a "power with, rather than power over". We discuss her garden and what is growing, her favourite plant, Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus) and its many functions and her healthy journey using Ayurvedic practices, intuitively going to certain plants when she needs them, and the underestimated balm of a cup of herbal tea.  Erin holds a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering and discusses how her first Permaculture Design Course in Portugal unlocked her understanding of how life works and led her on this path, whereby she now teaches Social Permaculture weekend courses alongside pioneer Robin Clayfield (who will be joining us in an interview soon!), speaks at Festivals and teaches elements of her toolkit at courses such as the Change-makers PDC on the Sunshine Coast.  Currently, she is partnered with Earth Funerals, an organisation establishing sustainable funerals and natural burial grounds around Australia. With developmental coaching, consulting and training in collaborative decision-making and governance (aka sociocracy), social permaculture, and artfully facilitating group processes, she is modelling how groups can be healthy human ecosystems and a regenerative force beyond monoculture thinking! "School Circles is an independent documentary that explores the practice of democratic schools in the Netherlands. The film shows students, teachers and staff members coming together to dialogue, discuss proposals, mediate conflicts and make decisions about their school life. These schools not only challenge the mainstream education, but also democracy as we know it. They put into practice Sociocracy, a method for collective organisation based on a systems perspective, in which the decisions are made by hearing all the voices and getting everyone's consent." This week's guest is a friend of the podcast, Dr Gail Bradbrook.  Best known for her role in co-founding Extinction Rebellion, Gail is one of our nation's (and our world's) deepest thinkers on radical change: what will it take to shift the juggernaut of predatory capitalism from the orgy of extraction, consumption and destruction that has brought us to the edge of crisis, and instead turn it towards a celebration of life in all its forms? Gail is also a leading beacon of practical activism - how can we bring the collective conversation to bear on the existential crises of our time? In our conversation, Gail honours the teachers that have helped her to find balance and insight, and to find practical, clear-eyed hope amidst all the potential for despair.  We go on to explore her work in BCAN (see below) and, particularly, to explore the nature of horizontal organising.  In a world where half the (western) population is wedded to the old hierarchical, patriarchal structures of top-down dominance, what happens in the other half when we experiment with other, less culturally familiar ways of being? Extinction Rebellion was one of the biggest, and most public expressions of horizontal organising in the modern contemporary world. A great deal of theory was put into practice and the results were often visible in newspaper headlines.  Recorded a mere handful of days after the 'We Quit" press release from XR, we look at some of the lessons learned, and how we might do things differently next time. BIO:Dr Gail Bradbrook has been researching, planning, and training for mass civil disobedience since 2010 and is a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion (XR). Since its launch in October 2018, XR has spread around the world so that now, there are more than 1150 XR groups in 75 countries. Gail has trained in molecular biophysics, and her talk on the science of the ecological crisis, the psychology of active participation, and the need for civil disobedience has gone viral and been inspired many to join XR. She is from Yorkshire, the mother of two boys, the daughter of a coal miner, and was named by GQ as one of the top 50 influencers in the UK, and honoured in the 2020 Women's Hour Power list for her part in instigating a rebellion against the British Government.More recently, she is one of the cofounders of the Be the Change Affinity Network of XR activists exploring ways to shift our cultural rigidity into something regenerative and distributive by design.  Gail is a genuine visionary leader - one of one of the deepest, most enlightened thinkers we know; living at the leading edge of change and exploring radical answers to the questions of our time. She's also deeply spiritual and emotionally thoughtful, and it's always an enormous joy to explore with her the big questions of our time: what are we here for and how can we shift the entire nature of our culture in practical ways? Ted Rau is 42 years old and a trainer, consultant, and co-founder of the non-profit movement support organization Sociocracy For All. What is sociocracy and how can it help your team make better decisions?   Today, my guest is Ted Rau, and I'm eager to share his experience and expertise in sociocracy with all of you. Ted spends most of his time training and consulting in sociocracy and leading the Sociocracy For All organization.  He is the co-author of the sociocracy handbook, Many Voices, One Song, and he enjoys writing articles and teaching meeting facilitation.   People and their universal need to connect and move things are at the center of his attention.  He pays attention to the co-housing movement, transgender rights, and non-violent communication. In this episode, we'll discuss: The meaning of sociocracy How sociocracy compares to a democracy Consent versus consensus The value of objections And much more! Thanks again for listening to the Humanitarian Entrepreneur podcast! If there's someone that you know who might find value in this episode, please be sure to share it with them.  You can find the link to get a copy of Ted's book in the resources below. Together, we'll question everything, and we won't just accept what is being handed to us—even if it means there are a few healthy objections along the way.  Thanks for joining us on this journey, and enjoy my conversation with Ted!   In This Episode: [01:24] - Ted Rau introduces himself and explains the history of sociocracy. [02:58] - Can one use sociocracy for the needs of a country instead of just an organization? [04:55] - The value of sociocracy and its structure in a company.  [06:15] - Ted explains how decision-making can be similar to how a family might decide together where to eat lunch. [09:14] - Ideally, those who work together are in a circle.  Here's what that means as it applies to making decisions. [11:57] - Consent versus consensus, according to Ted. [14:38] - Ted discusses the importance of listening. [15:37] - We hear about objections and feedback in sociocracy and what Ted learned about them that blew his mind. [18:21] - Objecting to a proposal is a good thing if everyone agrees on the aim. [19:35] - Ted defines nonviolent communication. [21:20] - Feelings are just pointers to meanings.  [22:52] - How can we introduce and start implementing these principles of sociocracy and what pitfalls might we encounter introducing sociocracy to a company? [25:52] - Who ultimately gets to decide what happens in a group? [28:24] - Tiffany concludes the conversation by reading a quote from Ted's book.   Resources: Book - Many Voices One Song: Shared Power with Sociocracy by Ted Rau Free Gift to Clarify Your Passion Signature Course to Start or Grow Your Business in 6 Weeks Individual Coaching Email Us To Join The Free, Humanitarian Entrepreneur Slack Community - Networking, Resources, and Support   Connect: Website - Humanitarian Entrepreneur Website - Sociocracy For All LinkedIn - Ted

When it comes to deciding who gets to make decisions and how decisions get made, the communities movement has done a lot to innovate more equitable and transparent strategies. In today's conversation with Diana Leafe Christian, we talk about the importance of solid governance models and decision making structures, how these structures and a lack thereof can impact everything from relationships to the ability to get things done, and specifically about Sociocracy, her preferred governance model. Diana Leafe Christian is the author of Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities, and Finding Community: How to Join an Ecovillage or Intentional Community. An Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) trainer for Gaia Education and editor of Communities magazine for 14 years, Diana has contributed chapters to three Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) and Gaia Education books: Beyond You and Me, Gaian Economics, and Ecovillage: 1001 Ways to Heal the Planet. She is a Board Member of GEN-US. In 2017, she received the Foundation for Intentional Community's Kozeny Communitarian Award, a lifetime achievement award for contributions to the US communities movement. She speaks at ecovillage and cohousing conferences, offers consultations, and leads workshops in person and online internationally. With the ability to make things simple and clear, and drawing on a deep and broad understanding of community dynamics, Diana encourages effective and harmonious ways for groups to become healthy and thriving, and resolve the typical interpersonal challenges that can arise in any community. She has an upcoming six-week online Sociocracy course starting on April 30th and will be offering an Introduction to Sociocracy for Co-housers course on August 25th, ahead of the National Cohousing Conference in Madison, Wisconsin where she will also be speaking on her recent Communities magazine series Working Effectively with Especially Challenging Behaviors.
