Diabetes in pets has been a growing concern, and while we mostly think cats when it comes to diabetes, dogs are at risk too. What can we do to help prevent this condition in our pets and how can we best treat them if they do have diabetes? Dr. Dana Varble from the North American Veterinary Community shares the latest. Basepaws is giving pet parents a way to know more about their feline than ever before. Not only does their DNA test cover breed, but also predisposition to diseases - which can help you give them better care. Dr. Kash Kuruppu joins us to talk about what this information can do for our pets. Steve helps listeners by phone and email.
Cats are humans' other best friend! In Los Angeles alone, there are an estimated 771,076 households that have one or more cats as pets and unconditional sources of companionship and friendship. Despite the high number of cat owners in LA and all over the country, however, there is extremely little research about feline genetics when the numbers are compared to canine genetics and research. Meet Basepaws, a Los Angeles based startup, that is focusing to change this imbalance in research and bring feline research to the forefront. According to their website, “At the Conference on Canine and Feline Genetics and Genomics (2019), for example, canine‑focused presentations outnumbered feline‑focused presentations roughly 5 to 1. In addition, when it comes to the number of sequenced genomes from each species, the goals (and available research funding) for the two fields look completely different." Thus, to bridge this gap, their goal is to build the world's largest feline genomics database. Learning genomic information about cats is extremely important because it enables us to better learn about caring about cats. Through DNA and a genomic library, we can learn more about diseases, health issues, and traits to create the best products for cats possible. We virtually sat down with Anna Skaya, the founder of Basepaws, to ask her all about it. You can also learn more by checking out their website: https://basepaws.com.

Unconscious Biases (0:00:00) Have you ever thought about how many decisions you make in a day? With so many choices in front of us on a regular basis, we often make decisions unconsciously. In fact, many of these decisions are made far in advance due to our own personal biases. But these biases that we all have can lead us to make decisions with ineffective –even harmful –outcomes. So how do we overcome our biases and make our decisions more fair-minded? Joining us on the show today is Monica Thakrar, president of consulting company MTI, here with us to discuss the unconscious bias and how we can get rid of our own. Communicating with Cats (0:18:10) We want to believe our pets love us just as much as we love them. Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure—since there's a pretty obvious language barrier between us and our favorite furry friends. But sometimes it seems like—especially with cats—they're trying to communicate with us in their own way. From purring, to rubbing up against our leg, to bringing us dead animals... are they trying to tell us something? And how can we know what they're trying to say? Here to share her advice with us on how we can communicate with our cats is BasePaws founder and CEO Anna Skaya. Implementing Social and Emotional Learning in Schools (0:34:35) Human behavior expert Dana Minney talks with Lisa and Richie about how schools can better teach social skills and emotional intelligence to our kids. The Dangers of DIY (0:52:45) I love a good DIY project. The past few months, especially, have been a golden time for those little do-it-at-home projects. They're the perfect thing for filling up all of our extra time, plus they're fun and budget friendly. The thing is though—we're not professionals. And with any DIY project there's always a danger that we'll end up making things worse before we make them better. So, whether you've already fell victim to a botched DIY project, or you're considering tackling that leaky faucet yourself, we've got some words of wisdom for you from professional home designer, Scott Holcombe. Stress Can Break Your Heart (1:13:01) According to a Cleveland Clinic study, cases of stress cardiomyopathy, also known as “broken heart syndrome,” have doubled over the course of the pandemic. The stress from COVID-19 is literally breaking our hearts. But how in the world can we get rid of our stress when everywhere we turn, there's something to add to it? Janet McKee is a stress expert, certified in Health and Wellness through Columbia University. She burned out as a Fortune 500 Executive and now helps others to manage their own stress. We're excited to have her on the show today to help us figure out how we can reduce the stress in our lives and avoid broken hearts. Weekend Review (1:29:46) Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from the New York Times Bestseller list to what's coming to streaming services.
Is Your Home Stressing You Out? (0:00:00) Whenever feelings of anxiety or pressure come up, it's good to have a safe place to go where you can get away from those negative emotions. But what if that place of stress is your own home? Whether we know it or not, it turns out there are a lot of things we might be doing in our homes that are giving us unneeded stress. So, what are these hidden stressors that are hiding in plain sight? Today we're joined by Dr. Carla Manly, a clinical psychologist and author, here with us to talk about how to destress your home. Maximalism (0:19:26) Marie Kondo has been the reigning queen of all things interior design for years. Out with the old, and out with the new even –minimalism decrees that less is more and almost nothing is everything. However, minimalism might soon lose its pedestalled place to its polar opposite—maximalism, which embodies the idea that more is always more. Here to discuss all things maximalism, how to do it right, and why you need more of it in your life is designer Jessica McCarthy of JAM Creative. School Preparation during COVID-19 (0:36:45) Friend of the show Carrie Ann Rhodes talks with Lisa and Richie about what we should be doing to prepare our kids for a school year that is impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Communicating with Cats (0:52:46) We want to believe our pets love us just as much as we love them. Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure—since there's a pretty obvious language barrier between us and our favorite furry friends. Jane Austen Was Here (1:08:52) Whether it's the dashing Mr. Darcy, the wit and humor, or the Regency era manners and fashion that draw you into Jane Austen novels and movies, we know you love Jane. Imagine having the experience of a lifetime, visiting all of Jane Austen's spots in England. Sounds like a dream, doesn't it? Well, three Jane Austen lovers had just that experience and created a book called “Jane Was Here” so you can have that experience too. Two of these women, Lexi Nilson and Nicole Jacobsen, join us today to tell us more about this experience! Carnival Foods at Home (1:27:50) Now the best part, arguably, of summer carnivals is the food! Sadly, the likelihood of us enjoying a Ferris wheel ride and an 890 calorie snack of fried Oreos is low this year. But just because we can't buy our fav fried food at the fairgrounds doesn't mean we can't still enjoy it. Here to tell us all we need to know about making our own carnival foods at home is Christi Erpillo, member of the Fernie's Funnel Cake legacy in Texas.

Pet parents can order a variety of DNA tests for their pets off the internet or even in select retailers these days. This week we’ve got a special guest to help veterinary professionals decipher fact from fiction, advice from speculation, and C from G (DNA joke - stick around until the end for another of Dr. Ward’s attempts at genetic humor…) when it comes to pet DNA and genetic tests. Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT are joined by their friend and colleague, Dr. Chris Menges from Basepaws. Chris shares his story of how he went from private veterinary practice to DNA-biotech startup, why he specialized in epidemiology and genomics, and how he thinks the future of veterinary genetic testing will advance over the next ten years. This is an important conversation that every veterinary professionals needs to have with their teams. More pet parents are having (or considering) these tests for their pets and we need to know how to answer their questions an address their concerns. Viewfinders, this is a good one! If you’d like to learn more about what Dr. Menges is doing, visit www.basepaws.com. What do you think about pet DNA testing? Do you recommend it? Why or why not? We want to hear from you!
Curbing Midnight Snacking (0:00:00) It's the middle of the night, dinner was only a few hours ago and breakfast feels like eons away. And yet... your stomach is already rumbling, craving a little midnight snack. But, should you give in? According to nutrition experts, midnight snacking isn't always bad, but left uncontrolled it could become a serious health issue. Here to discuss managing our midnight snack impulses is dietitian nutritionist, Penelope Clark. Preventing Child Sexual Abuse (0:13:53) This one's a sobering story. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimates that over 26 million new files of child pornography are uploaded to the internet each year. These online images translate into real-life behavior at terrifying rates. How can we protect our children from this growing scourge? Where is the risk coming from? To fill us in is Kristen Jenson, founder of the anti-pornography campaign Protect Young Minds. Theater Etiquette (0:34:13) At one time or another, we've all had to sit behind the tall man with an even taller hat at our niece's school play. We've also sat in front of a fellow Hamilton enthusiast singing every word to every song. Besides tainting our experience at the theatre, bad etiquette puts us in a horrible mood. Fortunately for us, Tony Gunn, a theatre professor, actor and director, joins us to share the dos and don'ts of going to the theatre to make sure we are having the best experience possible without ruining anyone else's. 23 and Your Cat (0:50:25) You might have heard of 23 and Me, the service that tells you all about your ancestry and where you've come from, you might have even done it yourself! But have you ever thought about figuring out more about your pet's ancestry? Basepaws does just this—a sort of 23 and me service for you cat. So, what are the benefits of knowing all this information about your cat? Why would this matter? Here to tell us all about it is Anna Skaya, founder and CEO of Basepaws. How to Keep New Year's Resolutions (1:03:12) By now, we've all gotten very good at making New Year's resolutions, and we're pretty good at keeping them for the first week or two of the new year. We're almost halfway through January, and some of us are already probably slipping because we're too busy, too lazy, or just plain too tired. We've made all of these great goals, so how can we keep them? Laura Vanderkam may just have the answer for us. Laura is a time management and productivity expert. We thought she'd be the perfect person to talk to about how to keep our New Year's resolutions. Weekend Review (1:21:12) Lisa and Richie talk about the new movies coming to theaters this weekend and fun activities happening across the country.

Anna Skaya, the CEO of Basepaws, joined Stacy last year on CCP Episode 213, and now she’s back to update Stacy on everything that has happened in the past year—including a successful appearance on Shark Tank! Basepaws is a simple, at-home DNA test for your cat that can give you an idea of the breeds your cat has in its DNA, and if your cat is a carrier for certain genetic diseases. According to Anna, Basepaws is laser-focused on cats, and the Basepaws test represents the first time that so many genetic tests for cats have been combined into one—and that such testing has been made affordable. Anna and Stacy also discuss feline nutrition, and how genetic testing will affect the personalization of nutrition as more and more data is gathered. There is a lot of research happening at Basepaws, and your cat may even qualify for free testing and reports, depending on breed and health conditions. One of the issues Basepaws is particularly passionate about is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). As Anna puts it, Basepaws is “way more than just a cat genetic company; we are a feline health company.” To learn more, visit the Basepaws website and check them out on social media to see what other people are saying.
