There are different theories for understanding Jesus' life, especially the miracles. On one hand there is Spirit Christology which holds that Jesus did the extraordinary things he did by the power of God the Holy Spirit. On the other hand there is what Michael Stewart Robb calls Giant Christology which is the idea that Jesus doesn't really know how to do what he does he's just a big oaf with extra powers. And then Dallas Willard has this idea that Jesus actually understood chemistry and physics as well or better than our chemists and physicists. That's this episode's topic. Have we really come up with anything better than Jesus' view of ultimate reality since Jesus' first taught it? There is a general cultural presumption that we have. But when you ask for details, names and citations, the crickets can be heard. In this episode Michael Stewart Robb discusses Dallas Willard's claim that Jesus knows spiritual reality (ultimate reality) better than anyone else we might mention. Dallas Willard speaks of a "cultural reality" which keeps people from understanding what Jesus' spirituality is. Michael Stewart Robb refers to this cultural reality as the great indifference to Jesus which stretches across Europe. And in this episode Mike shares Dallas's idea of what's behind this great indifference and what holds it in place. Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.I realize for some believers this holiday is off limits due to their past and or their conscience before the Lord. I respect that because, while we all have freedom in Christ, each one of us should do as the Holy Spirit directs us. If that's you, feel free to skip this episode. For those of you who are on the fence or haven't really considered how Christians should think about Halloween, I'd like to present one perspective in today's episode. Is this really "the devil's day" and are we violating scripture by handing out candy? It is my prayer that this episode will encourage you to fear not, but rather seek the Lord's will for your family's participation (or not) in Halloween. I am also giving some practical suggestions for fun couples and family costumes as well as my (new) favorite fall candies.
It is a great challenge for followers of Jesus in Europe to believe in God. The reason for this is because, as Dallas Willard puts it, our souls are soaked in secularity. And therefore we need to work really hard to rely on God in this life. Michael Stewart Robb ponders Willard's words on how this comes about and what we can do about it in this episode. In this episode, Shannon unpacks the concept of considering the upstream. She shares a personal experience where her husband encouraged her to consider what might be in someone's upstream to understand their behavior. Shannon emphasizes the importance of understanding our own upstream and how it shapes our responses and relationships. She encourages listeners to plot their life experiences and identify patterns to gain a deeper understanding of their upstream. By considering the upstream of others and ourselves, we can develop empathy, compassion, and healthier ways of relating to one another.Keywordsupstream principle, understanding, behavior, responses, relationships, plot life experiences, patterns, empathy, compassionTakeawaysConsider the upstream principle to understand the behavior and responses of others.Plot your life experiences and identify patterns to gain a deeper understanding of your own upstream.Develop empathy and compassion by considering the upstream of others. Our past does not have to define us; we can choose to move forward with hope and confidence. Our experiences, both good and bad, shape us and can be used by God to refine and transform us.mChapters00:00 | Introduction and Gratitude01:29 | The Upstream Principle: A Personal Experience06:12 | Understanding Our Upstream09:44 | Choosing to Be Informed, Not Defined, by the Past15:17 | The Potential Wounding of What We Love19:00 | Developing Empathy and Compassion Through Upstream Consideration21:40 | Embracing Our History and Moving Forward23:27 | EMB Close

This week we are joined by Natalie Krebs, Executive Editor at Outdoor Life. She recently traveled to Australia to learn about the anti-hunting movement that's vigorously trying to stop duck hunting. We were fascinated to hear about how these groups operated. We've never encountered an anti-hunter during a hunt…have you? Her stories are shocking and we thought that every hunter should pay attention to this to understand and help prevent this from happening in our United States. Either through egregious actions during hunts or more discreet methods of changing laws (think California mountain lions and now attempting the same in Colorado), the anti's are making efforts to shut down our way of life. They don't understand conservation and how hunting plays an integral role in managing wildlife, while at the same time raising funds for the same animals and many others. This is one every hunter needs to pay attention to and share. Listen, Learn and Be Informed. Welcome to another episode of "The Power Of God's Whisper Podcast," where today, we're diving deep into the heart of our mission as followers of Christ: witnessing and evangelism. In a world that often seems indifferent or even hostile to Christian values, how do we stand firm and share the transformative power of the gospel? Let's explore this together. Our springboard for today's discussion is: Acts 1:8: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."Acts 1:8 isn't just a mandate; it's a promise of divine empowerment. It reminds us that we're not alone in our efforts to share our faith—God's Spirit is with us, fueling our words and actions. This verse calls us to be witnesses not just locally but globally, stepping out in faith to reach every corner of the world with the message of Jesus Christ.Focus Points to Work/Study On:* Start Local, Think Global:* Begin your evangelism efforts in your own community—your "Jerusalem." Engage with neighbors, participate in community events, or volunteer. As you grow in confidence, expand your vision to wider areas—your "Judea and Samaria"—and even consider supporting or participating in missions across the globe.* Cultivate Spiritual Boldness:* Ask the Holy Spirit to empower you with boldness. Evangelism often requires stepping out of comfort zones, whether that means initiating a conversation about faith or responding to opportunities to speak about Christ in public settings. Boldness, coupled with humility, can open hearts and doors.* Be Informed and Inclusive:* Understand the cultural and spiritual backgrounds of the people you interact with. This knowledge can help you communicate the gospel in a way that is respectful and relevant. Embracing cultural sensitivity increases the effectiveness of your message and reflects the inclusive heart of the gospel. Conclusion: Being a witness for Christ is about more than just speaking words; it's about living out the gospel in such a way that others are drawn to Him. The power we're promised in Acts 1:8 is not just for overcoming personal challenges but for transforming the world, one heart at a time.Call to Action: This week, challenge yourself to share your faith with someone new. It could be a friend, a coworker, or even a stranger. Remember, the Holy Spirit is with you, providing the words and the opportunities.Question of the Day: What's one step you can take this week to move out of your evangelistic comfort zone?Let's Pray: Lord, thank You for entrusting us with the mission to be Your witnesses across the earth. Fill us with Your Spirit's power, so we can speak Your truth boldly and lovingly. Help us to start where we are but always keep our eyes on the broader horizon. Amen. Thanks for joining today's session on "The Power Of God's Whisper Podcast." Remember, every interaction is a chance to be a light. Having explained what "death" really is, Dallas Willard takes that insight and applies it to life now. The fuller consciousness that we get as we transition into God's full world is actually something which we can use to make sense of our world now. What is small and insignificant in the one context is actually very important in the other context because the other context is the one in which God is active. Since Jesus's friends never taste death, what will happen? In The Divine Conspiracy Dallas Willard gives some important teaching on that matter in part out of his work as a philosopher and in part out of his childhood as a Missouri hillbilly. Michael Stewart Robb also reads a story about a near-death experience which he found in the Missouri hills - one with a curious connection to Dallas Willard. While it used to be common knowledge in Europe and North America that death wouldn't happen, now it is taken for granted. One is possibly unwise to not write a bucket list and pursue all the good things that death makes impossible. Dallas Willard in The Divine Conspiracy shows how Jesus pioneered wise living in light of the fact that death wasn't going to happen and Michael Stewart Robb explains why you don't need a bucket list. Look at this world of goodness and it is hard to not be filled with despair at how it decays and dies. But Dallas Willard in The Divine Conspiracy calls this the "mind of the flesh" for it does not see that "all that is good is preserved." The human quandary is how to rise above "lives of quiet desperation" to something transcendent. Aldous Huxley suggested drugs. First off what is substance? We got to get a handle on that word in order to know what Dallas Willard is talking about. At a minimum, it means that something is capable of independent existence. But it means more than that and Michael Stewart Robb tries his best to do a little philosophy with you to get to Dallas's understanding of spiritual. The will or heart is the innermost core of a human being. With all the current talk of spiritual and spirituality, does anyone have in mind the will? Or when people talk about the will, what is that? Just matter and energy? If we are going to describe the spiritual, Dallas Willard thinks we must take serious personality and get around to talking about its center, the will. This applies to God just the same as to humans. And Michael Stewart Robb tries to dissect this compact section of The Divine Conspiracy. Pretty crucial to Dallas Willard's theology and whole view of the Bible is that we can know spiritual reality. God is spirit and we can know what that means. We can know positively and not just negatively. And our means of knowledge, he holds, is through knowledge of ourselves. The Divine Conspiracy is a disguised book about God. And in chapter 3 Dallas Willard has a lot to say about God's omnipresence. He seems to think that if we allow the myth of empty space to dominate our thinking, we won't understand Jesus or his gospel. God wants to be seen, so why don't we see him? Dallas Willard in his The Divine Conspiracy answers this by pointing our wanting to see God. Do we really want to see him? But he also points to the need to develop in our ability to see. Seeing is not so straightforward as we might think. Comparing God to humans can be dangerous business. But Dallas Willard feels confident to do it. And in this episode Michael Stewart Robb reaches Dallas's conclusion to how God is in space by exploring how you are in space. But in a century when spiritualism and pantheism are alive and well, Mike has some cautions to issue, the biggest being a reminder that Dallas really is a dualist. Dallas Willard's argument for God's presence in the world takes a detour through our presence in the world. Where are you? Not where is your body but where are you in relation to your body. There's a lot to talk about here and Michael Stewart Robb will need two podcasts/videos to get it talked out. Come join us for an exploration of Dallas Willard's existential phenomenology. Oh yeah! Dallas Willard says that the one place where "our contemporary mind-set" most strongly conflicts with the life and gospel of Jesus is in its understanding of space. He probably has in mind secularity. The secular mind-set has resulted, says Willard, in two attempts to reconcile the presence of God with empty space. Neither of which solves the problem. The lives of great people such as Sundar Singh is unthinkable and unlivable without a practical theology of God with us here and now. People throughout history have had "close encounters" with God and Dallas Willard thinks that these serve a very important role in teaching us about where we should expect God. The word for heaven might be a mistranslation in the Bible. At least that is what Dallas Willard thinks. Michael Stewart Robb explains why Willard thinks this is so important in our day. The 3rd chapter of The Divine Conspiracy is all about immanence. In this section Dallas Willard begins his description of how Jesus comes into the world to make God present in a new way. At some point Dallas Willard changed his mind on what the kingdom of God is. He eventually comes to the view in The Divine Conspiracy that "heaven is here and God is here." How did people depicted in the Bible, who had no Bible, know and relate to God? The challenge of Jesus' spirituality is coming to believe one thing, namely "our universe is a perfectly safe place to be." That may be a bit of an overstatement and you wouldn't want to build a whole systematic theology on it but you'd have most of Jesus' spirituality under your belt if you managed to believe it. Meaning, if you managed to internalize it. Michael Stewart Robb discusses this phrase which comes from chapter three of Dallas Willard's The Divine Conspiracy. It is psychologically impossible to believe a blur. But that is where modernity including postmodernity has left us with respect to God. Dallas Willard, a philosopher in his day job, saw that in the churches he entered. Thus it will be hard to believe in a God of joy, if we barely know what God is. Joy should characterize the life of Jesus's students. It doesn't so often because we don't know God like Jesus does. And here to help us learn theology from Jesus is Dallas Willard. Michael Stewart Robb is thinking about joy today. How did Jesus have it? Supposedly it was a part of his belief system. That this was a world where one could be joyous because joy is the only reasonable response. It's not about being happy. You can be happy one hour and sad the next. Happy is a feeling it is best not to worry about it. But joy should be pursued if you don't have it like Jesus. And here to help Mike is Dallas Willard's The Divine Conspiracy. It's fair to say that Sybil Wilkes, the former co-host of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, had her doubts in the beginning about her career in broadcasting, but helping hands along the way illuminated the path forward. The power of sisterhood is one of her guiding principles; she credits her mother for being a strong role model, leading her to be an advocate for others, especially women and people of color in the entertainment industry.YoSy, the media company she co-founded with her best friend, extends her “Be Informed, Be empowered” message to all of those around her. She shares with Jeanne how a few choice words from her mother let her know it was ok to step outside of her comfort zone, how self-awareness can make or break you, the three things she does for herself (or at least tries to do) everyday, and how being fired by legendary radio executive Marv Dyson turned out to be a blessing in disguise. About Sybil:Sybil is a Chicago native and graduate of Northwestern University, earning a Bachelors of Science in Political Science and Communication Studies. She began her radio career in 1985 as a production assistant at WKQX-FM, Chicago. She moved into news, leaving her hometown, and reporting for stations throughout the Southwest. She came back to Chicago in 1989, joining WGCI-AM/FM, as a talk show host. She added traffic reporter to her long resume in 1990, working at Shadow Traffic and joining Tom Joyner's show as a sidekick. She went on to be co-host with Joyner on his nationally syndicated show, heard in over 100 markets with more than eight million listeners. For two decades, Dr. Richard Haass has been the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, an independent, nonpartisan think tank organization that states this mission on its website: “To help people better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other countries.” Also, his expertise in international affairs and U.S. foreign policy has been tapped by our government, acting as the chair for the multiparty negotiations in Northern Ireland in 2012. From 2001 to 2003, Haass was the director of policy planning for the Department of State, acting as a principal advisor to Colin Powell during the war in Iraq. However, most of us know Richard Haass from his many appearances on national newscasts and as a consultant to NBC News — providing context to stories centering on international relations and our foreign policy. And within these decades of work, he has managed to find time to author over a dozen books that center on helping us understand the complexities of our place in the world. These include the New York Times bestsellers: "The World: A Brief Introduction” (2020), “A World in Disarray: American Foreign Policy and the Crisis of the Old Order” (2017) and “War of Necessity, War of Choice: A Memoir of Two Iraq Wars” (2010). However, this year, Richard Haass took a different turn in his writing, authoring his latest book: "The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens” (2023), a bestseller that centers on his years of experience looking at the world and shifting that focus in taking a hard look at ourselves — the people of the United States — to help us define the meaning of our citizenship and what our obligations are to help maintain our democracy. Within the book, Dr. Haass argues, "We get the government and the country we deserve. Getting the one we need, however, is up to us.” Within the book, Haass lists 10 “obligations” we have as citizens that include the need for us to remain civil, value norms, stay open to compromise, put our country first, get involved, promote the common good and others. However, the 1st of these obligations is “Be Informed,” stating, "An informed citizen is someone who puts himself or herself in a position to weigh what others say or write and contribute their own perspectives. Ideally, this individual would also know something of the country's history and how it came to be what it is today, as it is impossible to understand the present without an appreciation of the past." Dr. Haass continues, "It is essential to differentiate among facts, misstatements, opinions, predictions and recommendations. Facts are assertions that can be demonstrated to be so, measured, and proved.” In this 177th episode of "E&P Reports," we go one-on-one with Dr. Richard Haass, the president of the Council of Foreign Relations and author of the current New York Times bestseller: “The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens,” where he looks at the things, we as Americans should do to maintain a healthy democracy. In this episode, E&P Publisher Mike

How many people in our churches could give a Sunday school answer to the question, what is the kingdom of God? In this episode Michael Stewart Robb talks about why Dallas Willard thinks this is a worrying question and what its cause is. The gospel of Jesus, discipleship to him and the fulfilled life all depend on the kingdom of God making sense to people. What is it about church that keeps it from producing the kinds of people that the Old and New Testaments talk about? Dallas Willard grabs a saying from management experts, "Your system is perfectly designed to yield the result you are getting" and applies it to church. In this episode, Michael Stewart Robb shares Willard's diagnosis and he explains why Willard thinks that the solution must be natural. Any interested in bringing the spiritual and the secular together must first be able to say what exactly the spiritual is. This is the task that Dallas Willard wants to help us with in The Divine Conspiracy's chapter three. But that's where James Catford and Michael Stewart Robb pick up the conversation and start looking around modern society for the spiritual. We talk about her majesty the queen, architecture, going to hell and even punk rock. As James once told Mike (and Mike won't let James forget), "We have to blur the divide between the sacred and the secular." The past few years have carried an exceptionally concentrated flow of difficult news. It can feel like too much information to hold at any one time. In the podcast this week, we look at the impact of information on our senses. We consider a few ways we might process some of the dread that we're trying to cram into our already overflowing bucket. Can we find more energy, creativity, and gentleness in the face of life's uncertainty? Episode contentsFocussing On Where We Want to Go | 2:20Dread Stacking | 7:34The Cost of Stracking Too Much Information | 10.09People Are Under a Lot of Stress | 11:26It's Nothing Personal | 16:40Space Between Stimulus and Response | 18:30How Do We Know What We Need to Know? | 24:04To 'Be Informed'? | 24:59We're Not Wired For This | 27:42Sensory Information Processing | 28:56Starting From a Place of Humility | 29:41Too Much Information And The HSP | 34:40Depth of Processing | 35:05Easily Overstimulated | 39:14Emotional Reactivity | 43:20Sensitive to Subtleties | 44:50Awareness vs Alertness | 46:22Expanding Our Capacity To Hold Information | 50:27What The World Needs Most… | 53:30Slowing Down | 55:47Joy Emerges in The Cracks and Stains | 56:10How Do We Stack More Joy? | 57:47The Haven | 61:38 Focussing On Where We Want to Go | 2:20 Resources about coping with information overwhelm often tell us to limit, control, and challenge our actions and thoughts. But this is unhelpful. It's like looking at a tree when we're in control of a vehicle. We get more of what we focus on. If we want to avoid the tree it's no good focussing on it. It's far better to focus on where we want to go instead. Dread Stacking | 7:34 Dread Stacking is what happens when too much information builds up and we don't have time to process it. It comes from the relentless and endless string of painful stories from situations, events, and changes across the globe. The fast-paced world means attention moves from one thing to the next very quickly. But just because the news and social media can move from one thing to the next, it doesn't mean we can do that without consequences as humans. Stories can leave the residue of heartbreak, anxiety, and fear. The Cost of Stracking Too Much Information | 10.09 In the midst of a dread swap, it is very difficult to focus. In a world where everything matters, it's hard to know where we should invest our time and energy. So we might end up tuning out and turning off the flow of information. It follows that newsworthy information is usually bad. Or divisive. Or fear-mongering. It is exceptional. Not normal. Or it wants a reaction. And the simplest way to get people to engage is to provoke, scare, or anger. We might think that news is just information we passively consume. Whether on radio, TV or through social media. But it's not. It seeps into our experience of life. It contributes massively to our overall health. We need a balanced diet in the food we eat, and it's no different with the information we consume. What goes is is what comes out. We cannot only binge on 'newsworthy' news, expecting to feel balanced, happy, and healthy afterwards. We will build a skewed picture of the world, and carry that with us into other areas of life. People Are Under a Lot of Stress | 11:26 People can do crazy things when they feel overwhelmed. David Lynch demonstrates this perfectly in a wonderfully twisted scene in Twin Peaks. An accountant returns home to find a van parked a few inches over his drive. This sparks a rapid escalation that ends up with the van rolling into a lamp post with two dead assassins inside. Two local casino bosses are watching the whole thing unfold. Bradley says, "what kind of crazy neighbourhood is this?" to which his brother Rodney replies, "people are under a lot of stress, Bradley." I love this scene and I love this line. It seems to speak to so much of what we see going on in the world right now.
