Matt Rhode is the bassist for Vancouver's progressive-indie band Bend Sinister. Their latest single Price You Pay and Hot City, was released on July 14th, 2023 and they are currently working on their next album release in early 2024. And, when we asked Matt what album he wanted to chat about he answered Styx's Paradise Theatre. Yup. Styx baby! So, hop about the Sound Affect time machine to the AOR years when radio was filled with big bold poppy-proggy-jazzy-rock n' roll!
The Ellis era of Excalibur reaches an appropriately multiversal conclusion in Excalibur #103, “Bend Sinister—Reprise”! We're joined by comics scholar Dr. Daniel Stein to pick up the pieces and talk about how they relate to serial storytelling and the emotionality of work-for-hire creation and who really owns these stories anyway—a writer? A company? A reader? Maybe a little of all three…? We liked this one right up until the final page, which we hated. But the last caption says the best is yet to come… Will it prove prophetic??
What is the connection between curiosity and dissent? The Russian-American author Vladimir Nabokov [na BAW kiff] in his novel Bend Sinister wrote, “Curiosity … is insubordination in its purest form.” This association of curiosity and insubordination resonates with me because my experience bears it out. For instance, I don't tell the story often, but I once had my voice taken away because of my curiosity. I am not sure I ever got it back entirely. This is a public episode. We're (still) back from the winter break and reeling from term prep, but that doesn't mean we're not excited (positively possessed!) by the start of a brand-new era for our beloved British-y mutants, with a new regular writer (Warren Ellis) who brings lots of baggage but definite skill at scripting. Dr. John Edward Martin helps us slice through atmospheres of horror in a story that sharply exploits tropes in the service of something truly uncanny! Who'll get to Kitty first—the evil sword, the demon weed, or the fashion police??
Suomalaiset saavat nyt nauttia kotikielellään tämän perhosia tutkineen kirjallisen neron tuotoksesta, sillä Nabokovilta on julkaistu uusi suomennos ”Väärin päin” (alkuteos Bend Sinister, 1947). Keskustelemassa kaksi suomentajaa, Kristiina Drews sekä ”Väärin päin”-teoksen kääntänyt Heikki Karjalainen. Jakke Holvas juontaa.
Tosh and Kimley discuss EXCAVATE! THE WONDERFUL AND FRIGHTENING WORLD OF THE FALL (ed. by Tessa Norton & Bob Stanley) with special guest, number one fan of The Fall, Dave Ehrlich. We are neophytes to the forbidding and frankly overwhelming world of The Fall, so we've enlisted Dave to be our Sherpa. Dave's been a super fan since the 80s and guides us through The Fall's mysterious landscape. This is not a band for the faint of heart and their prodigious output means there's some work to be done to explore their universe, but we've found that the rewards are more than worth it. We're quickly becoming super fans as well. Dave's guide to initiates: Ten Fall releases I'd grab if the house were on fire: • This Nation's Saving Grace (1985) • Slates 10” EP (1981) • Hex Enduction Hour (1982) • The Wonderful & Frightening World of the Fall (1984) • Grotesque (1980) • The Unutterable (2000) • Bend Sinister (1986) • Perverted by Language (1983) • Fall Heads Roll (2005) • In: Palace of Swords Reversed: 1980-83 (1987) If you'd like a crash course on their fantastic Beggars' Banquet years (the “Brix Era”), incl. some essential tracks not on TNSG/etc., then seek out both of the “458489 A Sides” and “458489 B Sides” collections. And for anyone wanting to take a deep dive, there's an epic box set of every single one of the band's 24 radio sessions for the John Peel Show, entitled “The Fall: The Complete Peel Sessions 1978–2004”. The final part of season 12 kicks off with Chad and Brian discussing the first part of Carmen Boullosa's The Book of Anna, translated from the Spanish by Samantha Schnee and published by Coffee House. Chad gives a brief recap of Leo Tolstoy's novella, Anna Karenina, then they discuss how and what type of sequel this is, get into the two different storylines—revolution and Anna's children—and end with a discussion of the metafictional elements and the way in which this book plays off of Nabokov's Bend Sinister. This week's Anna song is "Anna" by Will Butler. (The video for which stars Emma Stone.) If you'd prefer to watch the conversation, you can find it on YouTube along with all our past episodes. Next week we'll discuss part two, “Bloody Sunday” (pgs 74-98). You can watch it live next Wednesday, July 29nd. Be sure to order Brian's book, Joytime Killbox, which is now officially available at better bookstores everywhere thanks to BOA Editions. It's our last show before the new year! Dan Moxon of Bend Sinister, sits down with Colton to talk about how the band got started as an instrumental prog rock group and eventually morphed into the hard to classify, energy filled, catchy rhythms that is Bend Sinister. We talk about how the band has grown over the 12 years of writing and releasing music and some stories from along that journey. So sit down, turn it up, and enjoy my conversation with Dan Moxon. Songs used: Walk the Other Way & Rock n Roll by Bend Sinister from their EP, The Other Way.

I am a lake. I am a tongue. I am a spirit. I am fevered. I am not covetous. I am the Dark Cavalier. I am the torch. I arise. I ask. I blow. I bring. I cannot change. I cannot look. I climb the hill. I come. I dream. I envy. I found. I heard. I intended an Ode. I know. I love. I must not grieve, my love. I never. I pant. I remember. I saw thee once. I traveled. I wandered. I will. I will. I will. I will.

Happy March, everyone. Our first show of a diverse month of CM Radio is pretty diverse itself. We're excited to have R&B recording artist JRDN on the show. Originally from Halifax, JRDN has spent the last several years touring behind 2007's "No Dress Code" and 2010's "IAMJRDN." Now, he's pushing the recently-released "JRDNEP," featuring the single "Can't Choose" with our pal Kardinal Offishall. We've also got Dan Moxon of Vancouver's Bend Sinister on the show, talking about his band's (fabulous) new record, "Animals," which drops March 11th through File Under: Music. We'll chat about the new release, recreating some pristine piano sounds on the road, and how scoring films translates musically to output from an indie rock band. Finally, Ryan Schroeyens, a founder of the Canadian DJ Show, will be on to speak about the event and its first edition in Calgary, happening in May 2014. The Toronto show will also return in the fall, and we'll try and get details on what people can expect from each.
