In today's episode, Joe Simek, Breathing Deeply assistant teacher, sits down with Breathing Deeply founder Brandt Passalacqua to talk about yoga therapy and mental health. With mental health, it is not a one size fits all approach. At Breathing Deeply, we teach our students how to create individualized practices that empower their clients to take their health into their own hands! Listen in as Brandt shares with us how yoga therapy's approach to mental health is different yet complementary to mainstream western medicine. Find out what the process is for assessing someone's mental health as a yoga therapist and developing specific yoga practices that work the best for an individual to help them reach their mental health goals. Each person lands at their mental state depending on their own personal journey and their specific imbalances, meaning with yoga therapy two people who are both suffering from anxiety may be given completely different practices. Brandt discusses the multiple assessment models taught at Breathing Deeply which are used to come up with an individualized practice that unfolds in relationship with each client. He then walks us through his process for assessing & curating a practice for a client with anxiety. Breathing Deeply's goal is to bring balance back to the entire system of all of our clients to lessen their suffering. Discover what sets Breathing Deeply from other yoga therapy schools! How yoga therapy is somatic as well as cognitive; body awareness and self inquiry, enabling us to enter and access healing through different lenses and layers, and understanding how interconnected the body and mind are. And how looking at all our layers is necessary to help a person heal deeply. Brandt covers the different kinds of yoga nidras and why it can be effective or adversely affect others, depending on, many things, one being a person's background. We briefly discuss the importance of seeking help long before crisis situations, physical or psychological, preventing much suffering through self-awareness and self-knowlegde that both Ayurveda and yoga therapy encourage. Joe Simek is a graduate of the Breathing Deeply Advanced Yoga Therapy program and teaches the 200 hour online yoga teacher training course and the Being at Peace with Food course at Breathing Deeply. In this video, our founder, Brandt Passalacqua, talks with Joe about the work he did with plantar fasciitis, which is a very popular condition that yoga therapists help to treat. Joe worked with a number of women who all suffered with plantar fasciitis in a group class format over a period of 4 weeks. Joe shares with us what he learned when studying this condition during his intakes as part of our yoga therapy training and what he did in his sessions with people who were suffering from plantar fasciitis. Joe discusses how the treatment of plantar fasciitis can be broken down into 4 buckets which each are covered in a sequence given to clients to do at home. The mentorship that Joe received as part of the Breathing Deeply yoga therapy course for this condition is also covered during this conversation. Brandt Passalacqua, creator of Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy, talks with J about yoga therapy and subtle aspects of yoga. They discuss being a musician in NYC in the early 90's, Brandt's near death experience and the role yoga played in his miraculous recovery, his time at Sivananda and studying with Mukunda Stiles, when teachers fulfill their roles and students move on, comparing yoga and yoga therapy, issues of institutionalization, the role of intuition, and the spirit of coming together in the name of balance and health. In this conversation with yoga therapist Joe Simek and Breathing Deeply founder Brandt Passalacqua, Brandt discusses trauma and yoga therapy. There are a lot of schools of thought about how to approach trauma through yoga and the more common one is a more passive, slower approach, allowing the practitioner to explore movement and breath while giving lots of natural cueing. Although this technique can be really effective, there are other ways to approach trauma. Brandt shares with us what those other approaches are so we can go beyond what we most commonly know as ‘trauma-informed yoga'. We'd love to know your thoughts on using yoga as a means to recover from trauma. Share your experiences as a teacher with us in the comments or over on our Instagram or Facebook page (linked below)! Welcome to episode 8 of the Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy & Meditation podcast! In this episode, Breathing Deeply founder Brandt Passalacqua discusses the importance of cultivating softness and openness as part of our meditation practice. Softening and opening allow us to move through our emotional states, even very tough ones, quickly and more effortlessly. With practice, we being to be able to soften into all of it more easily. Every moment, every breath, and every thought is an opportunity for up to be more open, to soften, and to surrender. Brandt also discusses why we may feel resistance to this practice of opening and softening to all of our experiences and emotional states which is resistance to change. By softening and opening to all emotional states, we are doing something different which will change us, perhaps it will radically change us! This is of course the very reason we practice, we don't meditate to stay the same, but as humans, we inherently want to control the way that change looks. This episode will inspire you to invite more openness and surrender into whatever you are experiencing in life as part of your practice to help you move through whatever life throws your way. Topics Covered: The act of softening Our root desire Attachment Resistance to uncomfortable thoughts and feelings Dealing with difficult emotional states by softening Resistance to change Breathing Deeply is a Yoga Therapy and Meditation School, founded by lead teacher Brand Passalacqua in 2014. In this episode, Breathing Deeply Founder & Lead Teacher, Brandt Passalacqua shares a lecture on reality re-examined as part of the Breathing Deeply Online Meditation Retreat. The reality that we can perceive with our senses is incomplete, there is more to this reality and through philosophical study and meditation, we can expand our awareness to encompass more aspects of reality. Brandt boils down our perception of reality by examining reality through the lens of non-dual yogic traditions and why we feel there is a void to be filled when we can't perceive the totality of our reality. This episode covers the view of reality according to dual and non-dual traditions, the goal of reaching expanded states of awareness, how experiencing reality more fully can help us feel free, and why it is useful to understand these philosophical concepts. Although valuable on their own, combining the concepts of "Discipline and Surrender" can be important for the evolution of our meditation practice. In this episode, meditation teacher Brandt Passalacqua references the Yoga Sutra and the Yoga Spandakarika texts as he explains how discipline, or "the willingness to maintain the perspective we have found through practice," can lead to a deep surrender, where we can know ourselves at our very cores. He also leads a Bija Mantra Meditation to support this journey. Welcome to the Breathing Deeply Meditation Podcast.
