In today's episode, Joe Simek, Breathing Deeply assistant teacher, sits down with Breathing Deeply founder Brandt Passalacqua to talk about yoga therapy and mental health. With mental health, it is not a one size fits all approach. At Breathing Deeply, we teach our students how to create individualized practices that empower their clients to take their health into their own hands! Listen in as Brandt shares with us how yoga therapy's approach to mental health is different yet complementary to mainstream western medicine. Find out what the process is for assessing someone's mental health as a yoga therapist and developing specific yoga practices that work the best for an individual to help them reach their mental health goals. Each person lands at their mental state depending on their own personal journey and their specific imbalances, meaning with yoga therapy two people who are both suffering from anxiety may be given completely different practices. Brandt discusses the multiple assessment models taught at Breathing Deeply which are used to come up with an individualized practice that unfolds in relationship with each client. He then walks us through his process for assessing & curating a practice for a client with anxiety. Breathing Deeply's goal is to bring balance back to the entire system of all of our clients to lessen their suffering. Discover what sets Breathing Deeply from other yoga therapy schools! Om Shanthi This episode covers: The difference between yoga therapy's approach to mental health & the traditional standard of care given in western medicine What does the assessment of someone's mental health look like in yoga therapy? The difference between going to a yoga class for mental health benefits and seeing a yoga therapist The most important distinction between Breathing Deeply and other yoga therapy schools Seeing our yoga therapy clients as people, not conditions The models we use to teach our students to individualize yoga therapy practices for their clients The process for a new yoga therapy client who comes in with anxiety Breathing Deeply is a Yoga Therapy and Meditation School, founded by lead teacher Brand Passalacqua in 2014. The Manomaya kosha is the layer of our being that represents the intellect and the conscious mind. This is the level of our conscious thoughts. The Manomaya kosha is one of the most important koshas, because of the huge effect it has on us. Because the mind is so powerful, it can affect all the other 4 koshas dramatically. We can think of the Manomaya kosha as the pivotal centerpiece in the 5 kosha model. This is why, as yoga therapists, it is important to ensure the Manomaya kosha is healthy and balanced through specific practices. In this episode, Brandt shares the role the Manomaya Kosha plays in our mental and physical health and the two ways we work with the Manomaya Kosha as yoga therapists. Brandt then takes us on an exploration of chapter one of the yoga sutras and how we can apply the teachings in the yoga sutras to the Manomaya kosha personally and in a therapeutic context. Prana is the life force that animates everything. This includes everything external to us and everything within ourselves. It is infinite and it's all about flow throughout the body. Since prana is infinite and it's everywhere, we don't need to generate more of it, we just need to let it flow through our energetic and physical system. Breath is one way we interact with prana outside our body and depending on how we breathe we can change the way prana moves in, out, and around our own body. There are specific pranayama exercises that one can practice to influence the way that prana moves through our system in different ways. It is through these breathing practices that we can balance energies in our system which may have become out of balance. Today, Brandt is talking all about the 5 pranas, also known as the Prana Vayus. Each of the 5 pranas moves in a different direction, is primarily located in different areas in or around the physical body, and is inherently linked to the breath. It's important to have a strong connection to the 5 pranas when we work with prana or the breath. Following these energetic currents is a practice in itself that can bring us great insight into the nature of our relationship with the outer pranic world, which is the same as the inner pranic world. Brandt shares important information about what each of the 5 pranas is, how they move with the breath, what each prana governs, and what their uses are in the context of the energetic and physical body and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy. This episode has been taken from a live Q&A session with Brandt and his yoga therapy students. Many of our students who join us come from a background of years of yoga asana practice. When they start training with us, they learn a completely new set of tools, techniques, and models to help them refine and change their personal practice. This often leads to many of our students making big changes to the way they practice and teach their yoga classes as they go on this journey to become yoga therapists. This can have a profound impact on their life. Brandt is always there for his students to guide them through what they are encountering not only as a training yoga therapist but also in their own personal practice. In today's Q&A Brandt discusses using a personal practice to overcome personal struggles and using contemplation to see them through a new lens. He also covers the issue of not being able to sit in sukhasana (seated cross leg position) for extended periods of time, why this is okay, and some alternatives. Other topics covered include creating safe sequences that help strengthen muscles and why stretching feels so good, the question of whether to work with someone who has a substance addiction and has relapsed as well as a discussion around ratio breathing and the purpose of extending exhales versus inhales in the context of yoga therapy. We hope you enjoyed this episode! Let us know in the comments or send us a message on Instagram or Facebook any key takeaways that you have. This episode covers: How can I move through family struggles with contemplation as a practice? What are alternatives to sukhasana (easy pose) for long periods of time? How can I structure an asana sequence to strengthen muscle groups in a safe & balanced way? How should I go about working with someone with an addiction who has relapsed? Why do we focus on the exhalation in certain postures? What is a balanced breath ratio count? There is a lot of information that one could present when talking about this topic so this is going to be a brief yet comprehensive introduction as we dig into the various time periods of yoga. To study the history of yoga is to study the philosophy of yoga. There are 5 major time periods that we cover in this episode: Vedic Preclassical Classical period The tantric age (post-classical) Modern yoga For each section, Joe gives a brief introduction and the main philosophical takeaways for each of the eras in yoga history. What we've come to know in the west as ‘yoga', these exercise classes that have risen in popularity in the last 20-30 years, is a drop in the bucket of the history and knowledge of yoga. Hopefully, this acts as an introduction and charts you on your own course of discovery. This video has been taken directly from our 200-hour therapeutic yoga teacher training. Welcome to episode 25 of the Breathing Deeply podcast and our meditation sangha with Brandt! The aim of this meditation sangha is to meditate in a way that allows us to experience the love that is the nature of all things. This is our spiritual heart, the place where we connect to consciousness and love itself. Brandt firstly shares with us some words about love and the heart from the yoga tradition and how we can use meditation as a process to access our spiritual heart and come to a natural state of bliss and connection to all that is. Striving to reach this place of pure consciousness and bliss is a powerful way to help us keep our momentum up when it comes to our meditation practice! Brandt then guides us through a 40 minute meditation (starts at 8:35 mins) where we will be meditating on Om while visualizing a clear blue sky. Many traditions use this meditation technique and the reason for that is it creates space in the mind and it trains us to see the blue sky and helps us to push everything else to the side. The Oms help us to vibrate our consciousness into something more peaceful and clean. This talk and meditation were taken directly from our virtual retreat as part of our online meditation program. Welcome to episode 13 of the Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy & Meditation podcast! This episode has been taken from a live Q&A session with Brandt and students inside the Breathing Deeply Meditation Program. In this episode, Brandt covers two students' questions which address the topics of why we dream about the past more after we start meditating and whether following our desires is beneficial for our evolution. Sometimes when we have an active dream time we can wake up feeling like we haven't really slept. In our dreams, we may also have recurring themes of things that happened in our past that keep coming up which we have already moved on from. Brandt explains why this happens within our conscious and unconscious minds. When it comes to desires, there are many different yogic paths that have rules about what you can and can't do with your desires. Brandt explains why this is unrealistic as our root desires, such as connection, will continue to manifest in many different ways. Brandt shares how we can follow our desires in a conscious way that is beneficial to all. We'd love to know how you found this episode! In this conversation with yoga therapist Joe Simek and Breathing Deeply founder Brandt Passalacqua, Brandt discusses trauma and yoga therapy. There are a lot of schools of thought about how to approach trauma through yoga and the more common one is a more passive, slower approach, allowing the practitioner to explore movement and breath while giving lots of natural cueing. Although this technique can be really effective, there are other ways to approach trauma. Brandt shares with us what those other approaches are so we can go beyond what we most commonly know as ‘trauma-informed yoga'. Welcome to episode 8 of the Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy & Meditation podcast! In this episode, Breathing Deeply founder Brandt Passalacqua discusses the importance of cultivating softness and openness as part of our meditation practice. Softening and opening allow us to move through our emotional states, even very tough ones, quickly and more effortlessly. With practice, we being to be able to soften into all of it more easily. Every moment, every breath, and every thought is an opportunity for up to be more open, to soften, and to surrender. Brandt also discusses why we may feel resistance to this practice of opening and softening to all of our experiences and emotional states which is resistance to change. By softening and opening to all emotional states, we are doing something different which will change us, perhaps it will radically change us! This is of course the very reason we practice, we don't meditate to stay the same, but as humans, we inherently want to control the way that change looks. This episode will inspire you to invite more openness and surrender into whatever you are experiencing in life as part of your practice to help you move through whatever life throws your way.
