Accenture, Deloitte en Randstad zijn de laatste in een snelgroeiende rij bedrijven die terugkrabbelen op hun diversiteitsbeleid onder druk van Amerikaans president Donald Trump. Sweden's bid to join NATO got a major boost when the Turkish parliament finally ratified its membership application this week. Yet with the Turkish president's signature still needed, Sweden's wait to join the military alliance may not be over. After ten long months, the Turkish parliament on Tuesday evening overwhelmingly voted to approve Sweden's Nato membership.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been holding up the ratification with a long list of demands from his allies, and the vote came after intensive diplomatic lobbying led by Washington. At the heart of the delay was Ankara's demand that the US Congress approve the sale of American F-16 fighter jets to replace Turkey's ageing airforce."Neither the United States nor Turkey trust each other on any level," said Asli Aydintasbas, an analyst with Washington-based think tank the Brookings Institution."There is also no trust here in Washington vis-a-vis the actions of the Turkish government," she continued. "They don't want to find themselves in a situation where they deliver on their end and the other side doesn't."Mutual mistrustThat distrust was exacerbated by the apparent lack of personal chemistry between Erdogan and US President Joe Biden, who in the past has described the Turkish leader as a bully. But the impasse was broken by a rare phone call between the two leaders last month. Biden reportedly convinced Erdogan that he could only persuade Congress to allow the jet sale to Turkey if the Turkish parliament ratified Sweden's NATO membership – a deal that goes back to last year, according to Sinan Ulgen of Edam, an Istanbul-based think tank."There is an agreement that was essentially struck during the last NATO summit in Vilnius whereby the US side would essentially start the formal notification of the F-16 package once the Turkish parliament ratifies the accession of Sweden to NATO," Ulgen said. But behind Turkey's lengthy delay lies scepticism in Ankara whether Biden can deliver Congress.Lame duck?Hostility towards Erdogan over his authoritarianism and threats to neighbours, including Greece, is a rare issue that bridges the deep divide between US Democrats and Republicans.Erdogan's strong backing of Hamas, which he calls a "liberation movement", has only added to that hostility.Meanwhile, Biden is increasingly seen as a lame-duck president as 2024 elections approach."Now [Donald] Trump is marching on the way to triumph once more, maybe, probably. Biden cannot be exerting pressure over the Senate and House of Representatives for the sake of Turkey," predicts Sezin Oney, a commentator with Turkish news portal Duvar.Oney points out Biden's failure to get Congress to sign off on funding for Ukraine can only add to Ankara's unease."I mean, he couldn't do it in the case of Ukraine; he's struggling with that. So how can he do it on behalf of Turkey, which doesn't deliver anything and, on top of it, supports Hamas?" she questioned. Turkey under fire after declaring Hamas a 'liberation' group Erdogan weighs benefits of friendlier ties with Turkey's Western alliesFrom Turkey to HungarySuch concerns could yet further delay Sweden's membership. While the Turkish parliament ratified NATO's expansion, Erdogan has to sign off on the legislation and send the document to the US State Department as per the military alliance's rules. But political momentum is behind the deal."Congressional approvals really rely on key party spokespeople on the committees," said analyst Aydintasbas. "There is still overwhelming approval for the deal – enough numbers to make it past foreign relations committees in both houses, because it is so important for transatlantic unity, not because the US Congress approves of Turkey's foreign policy direction."But even if the hurdle of Turkey is finally overcome, Hungary is yet to ratify – and Prime Minister Viktor Orban, after 20 months, is now demanding unspecified concessions from Sweden. With Erdogan a close ally of Orban, NATO may yet need Turkey's assistance in finally bringing Sweden into the fold.
“There's the faintest soupçon of asparagus and just a flutter of Edam cheese,” says Paul Giamatti in the movie Sideways. Believe it or not, he's describing pinot noir, not quiche. The world of sommeliers, wine lists, and tasting notes is filled with this kind of language, prices seemingly rising in step with the number of bizarre adjectives. It's tempting to dismiss the whole thing as B.S., but listen in: this episode, author Bianca Bosker takes us along on her journey into the history and science behind blind tasting, wine flavor wheels, and the craft of the sommelier. You'll never feel lost in front of a wine list again. (encore) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Swedish hopes of early Nato membership are fading as Turkey continues to hold up Sweden's bid as part of a standoff with the United States. In July, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson declared he had secured Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's support for Sweden's membership bid at the Nato summit in Vilnius and that ratification would follow shortly. But hopes of Sweden joining the military alliance by the end of this year have turned to dust, with ratification still not even on the Turkish parliament's agenda.Whether Turkey signs off on Sweden's membership depends on Erdogan's relationship with US President Joseph Biden."In July, at the Nato summit in Vilnius, President Biden and Erdogan agreed to reset their relations – a sequence of events, a deal and a handshake that would start with Turkey ratifying Sweden's EU accession in the parliament," explains Asli Aydintasbas of the Washington-based Brookings Institution. For Ankara, the sale of American F-16 fighter jets to Turkey is at the centre of the rapprochement with Washington. The deal has been held up over ongoing US-Turkish tensions. Washington says it has green-lit the sale, but the purchase also needs to be ratified by Congress. Continuing lack of trust between the Nato allies has led to the ongoing impasse."It's become like a chicken-and-egg story about who should act first," suggests Ozgur Unluhisarcikli of the German Marshall Fund."Now the United States is concerned that they could actually give the F-16s, and Turkey can still not ratify. And Ankara is concerned that Turkey could drop its only remaining card, and the United States may still not respond," says Unluhisarcikli. "That's the problem."Sticking pointsErdogan said this month that Turkey will only ratify Sweden's bid if Congress votes to sanction the F-16 sale, calling for the votes to be held simultaneously. However, there is strong bipartisan opposition to the arms sales in Congress over Erdogan's aggressive stance towards neighbour Greece.Erdogan has reached out to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, holding a summit this month in Athens at which both leaders pledged to improve relations. Ankara is banking on rapprochement with Greece quelling opposition in Congress. But as one diplomatic fire was put out, another erupted. Erdogan's backing for Hamas after its attacks on Israel appears to have scuppered any hopes of a breakthrough in Congress. Turkey under fire after declaring Hamas a 'liberation' groupTrump card? But the impasse may suit Erdogan's agenda. Given the importance of securing Sweden's Nato membership to Washington and its European allies, the need for Turkey's green light gives Erdogan powerful leverage."I think one of the reasons why that ratification has not happened is because Erdogan and the Turkish government want to maximise the return on that card because this is something that you can only play once," says Sinan Ulgen of the Istanbul-based Edam think tank."What sort of leverage this card is going to give to Ankara is not a simple question to answer," says Ulgen. "It may be that, for instance, that Ankara believes that the fact that it still holds the card protects it against some of the harsh rhetoric that Turkey's partners in the West may have on Turkey's policy towards Hamas – the pressure that these governments may want to bring on Ankara regarding the current rhetoric on Hamas."So indeed, that may be the reason Turkey is holding on to that card." Erdogan weighs benefits of friendlier ties with Turkey's Western alliesWith Congress yet to schedule a vote on sanctioning the military sale to Turkey and the Turkish parliament yet to put ratification of Sweden's Nato membership on its agenda, there is no end in sight to the impasse.Analyst Aydintasbas suggests Ankara could be already eyeing American presidential elections next year and looking to the return of Donald Trump, with whom Erdogan had good relations."It was Erdogan who started trying to see if he could [drag out Swedish ratification] if he could get more. Maybe on some level, they're also thinking the Trump administration could come to power," she said.
On this episode of Know Power, Rob Gramlich discusses various aspects related to the renewable energy sector. He points out that residential rates in the Southeast are higher in four or five key states, and the idea that everything is working fine outside the RTOs is not true. Despite the Standard Market Design not working due to politics and lobbying, FERC nominees who would mandate RTOs are not favored by the Senate Energy Committee. Rob also emphasizes the need for a step-by-step approach towards a voluntary RTO development approach, citing SPP's successful model of operating the system and receiving 90% of their energy from renewables. The podcast highlights the importance of understanding rate pancaking in transitioning to cleaner, renewable resources, and the integration of utilities under a single RTO umbrella to create a more efficient pathway for moving power around the grid. He also discusses the potential for transmission infrastructure in different regions, both centralized and regional, and the need for renewables to support increased demands in load. The episode concludes with policymakers and Congress needing to encourage interregional transmission planning, which is a great investment with huge savings, and the idea of minimum transmission transfer being discussed by the President's negotiators.Guest bio: Rob Gramlich is President of Grid Strategies LLC, a Washington DC-based consultancy focused on transmission and power markets for a reliable, affordable, and sustainable power system. Turkey's decades-long bid to join the European Union will be back on the agenda as EU leaders meet at a summit later this month. They are also expected to focus on Ukrainian membership as part of an eastward drive. "It's going to be an historic summit in itself for the EU, where decisions on possible openings towards Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia as well are going to be decided," Sinan Ulgen of the Istanbul-based Edam think tank told RFI.But such a significant and expensive eastward drive raises questions over Turkey, whose application to join the European bloc is at a standstill amid concerns over democratic governance and human rights."The EU leaders will also need to answer the question about what they are willing to do with Turkey. How willing are they to engage with Turkey when they are making this historic opening towards potential new members in the east?" Ulgen asked. Brussels recommends opening EU membership talks with Ukraine'Democratic backsliding'Turkey's bid to join the EU has remained in the deep freeze over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian rule.Strengthened by a new electoral mandate in May, Erdogan is continuing his crackdown on dissent and tightening his grip on power. However, the Turkish leader is expected to bring with him a list of demands when he attends the EU summit, including visa liberalisation and calls for a new trade deal.European leaders may be looking for compromise rather than confrontation, given that Erdogan is set to remain in power for the foreseeable future.“Especially after the elections in Turkey, the EU is looking for new ways of having a more constructive and less acrimonious relationship with Turkey," predicts Berktay Mandirci, a senior analyst with the International Crisis Group. The modernisation of the customs union, for example is in the interest of both the EU and Turkey, he says. But Mandirci warns that the realities of Turkey can't be ignored: "The human rights situation in Turkey and the democratic backsliding in Turkey always come up in discussions within the EU." Turkey's embattled civil society fears worst as foreign funding dries upStrategic locationThere are significant obstacles to Erdogan's EU demands – such as the reticence of European far-right parties, most recently in the Netherlands, who are deeply opposed to visa liberalisation with Turkey.Meanwhile, a new customs trade deal with the EU has a human rights requirement. But Erdogan retains powerful leverage given Turkey's strategic location, bordering the Middle East and sharing the Black Sea with Ukraine and Russia, which means the EU can ill afford to alienate Ankara."The repercussions will be more in terms of the opportunity lost," says Ulgen. "It might have turned into a closer diplomatic partnership to address some of the regional crises. It might also mean working together for the construction and reconstruction of Ukraine."But all of these opportunities will be lost if this estrangement between Turkey and the EU continues." Can Turkey tip the balance of power in the Caucasus conflict?Difficult discussionErdogan is expected to remind EU leaders of Turkey's role as gatekeeper to migrants seeking to enter Europe. At the same time, Ankara has yet to agree to allow Sweden to join Nato. For the European Union, the seemingly endless conundrum about what to do with Turkey will be the elephant in the room at the Brussels summit."There is no realistic perspective for EU membership in light of the democratic backsliding and all the developments that have been taking place in the country in the last few years," says Ioannis Grigoriadis at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy.Grigoriadis believes that reassessing the future of Ankara's bid is long overdue, especially as the EU considers a new wave of accession, but warns such a conversation is likely to be uncomfortable, if it goes ahead at all.Like in previous EU summits, the expectation is that contentious issues to do with Turkey will be postponed in the hope that future commitments to Ankara will be enough to avoid a confrontation with Erdogan and keep Turkey on side – or, in other words, the can will be kicked down the road again.

Gopinath argues that too many people only spend a couple of the Netherlands before traveling on to see more of Europe. He lays out a week's worth of day trips that one can make from Amsterdam. He recommends the following places to visit: Located in Gelderland, the Palais Het Loo is often associated with Queen Wilhelmina. Explore its impressive architecture, gardens, and the connection between the Dutch royal family and this palace. Drive from the Palace at Low towards Amsterdam, and you'll come across Muiderslot Castle, dating back to the 13th century, making it the oldest accessible site for visitors in the Netherlands. It's conveniently located less than half an hour from Amsterdam. You can reach the castle by car, public transport, or even take a ferry from Amsterdam in the summertime, adding a unique touch to your visit, as the castle sits at the meeting point of the River Vecht and the South Sea. Nearby, you'll find the old star fortress city of Naarden, just two miles from Muiderslot Castle. While the city's layout may not be as impressive in person as it appears from an aerial view, it still offers a charming Dutch town experience with few tourists. Additionally, the small town of Muiden, just a minute from the castle, is worth a visit, featuring monumental and historic buildings, a beautiful marina, and picturesque views of the River Vecht and the South Sea. Located in Baarn, Castle Groeneveld is a grand estate with beautiful gardens. Giethoorn, a charming small village in the eastern part of the Netherlands, is approximately an hour and a half from Amsterdam and is often referred to as the "Dutch Venice." This picturesque place is famous for its canals and bridges. What sets Giethoorn apart is the wide canals, a result of historical peat extraction. Renting a boat is highly recommended. Drive back to Amsterdam over one of the closure dykes to get a glimpse at how the Dutch have reclaimed so much of their country from the sea. Feiluwa National Park park is known for its greenery and is popular with locals. It lacks the typical mountains and valleys found in U.S. national parks, but that just makes it better to explore by bike from its fleet of bikes. The historical hunting lodge in the park features a viewpoint tower and scenic lakeside views. The Kroller Muller Museum in the park houses a significant collection of art, especially from Van Gogh, making it a great alternative to the crowded Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Kinderdijk is a UNESCO heritage site known for its 19 windmills. Take a boat ride and a glimpse into Dutch history and water management. North of Amsterdam are the Dutch Golden Age cities of Horn and Enkhuizen with rich history, including impressive buildings, and the Zuiderzee Museum. Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum near Amsterdam showcasing the Zaandam region's industrial and cultural heritage, including windmills and Dutch traditions. Gopinath also recommends you visit fishing villages like Volendam and Edam, known for their maritime history and cheese production. These day trips offer a mix of historical landmarks, picturesque landscapes, and royal connections, providing a diverse and enriching experience in the Netherlands. See why Gopinath thinks the Netherlands deserves more of your visit.

Esau and the Edomites is an often overlooked topic in many churches. The question arises, if evil is associated with Esau, when did this hatred end and when did God change his mind to love Esau as much as Jacob? The Bible provides insight into this subject. Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife who was barren and the Lord answered his prayers. Rebecca, his wife, gave birth to twins who struggled in her womb before birth. The Lord told Rebecca that two nations were in her womb and one would be stronger than the other, with the greater serving the younger. According to the Book of Jasher, Esau was deceitful from birth while Jacob was perfect and wise. Isaac loved Esau for eating his venison, but Rebecca loved Jacob. In Genesis 25, Jacob offered Esau bread and lentil pottage, and when Esau ate it, he despised his birthright. Jesus mentions that Esau fled from Nimrod due to exhaustion from fighting and fleeing. Esau was 40 years old when he married Judith, the daughter of Bride. Isaac blessed Jacob and charged him not to take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. Esau cried bitterly when he saw Isaac bless Jacob and send him away. The Bible mentions a conflict between Isaac and Jacob in Genesis 33. In Exodus 17, there was a war between Israel and Al-Malik, descendants of Esau. The Lord told Moses to write a memorial of this in a book and to declare it to Joshua. The Edomites did not accommodate the Israelites, leading God to hold it against them for generations. In 2 Samuel 8, David had a close companion who turned on him, typical of Edomites who deceitfully gained high positions next to the king. In John 13:18, Jesus spoke of his betrayal and death, referring to Judas Iscariot. Jesus used the same term as David when referring to his betrayal. In Matthew 21:38, Jesus gives the parable of the householder concerning the vineyard of the Lord. The husband sent his son, who the husbandmen wanted to kill to seize his inheritance. In John 8:38, Jesus argued with the Pharisees and Sadducees, saying they sought to kill him because his word had no place in them. Jesus revealed they were of their father the Devil. When Jesus was born, Herod, a descendant of the Herodium who had converted to Judaism, was on the throne and tried to kill Jesus. When Jesus confronted the Herodian scribes and Pharisees, he was dealing with Edomites who betrayed him. In Psalm 83, Edomites are described as warmongers and God has declared war against them. They are Confederate against the tabernacles of Edam and the Israelites of Moab, Gebal, Ammon, and Philistines.

California ISO's Chief Operating Officer, Mark Rothleder, details a new study finding that an enhanced day-ahead market, or EDAM, encompassing all 38 balancing authorities in the West, would provide billions of dollars in economic savings for consumers. But EDAM is not a Regional Transmission Organization. Utilities would still control their grid systems. The construct lacks the independent grid oversight of an RTO. But Rothleder sees the enhanced market structure as the beginning of an incremental process that may, one day, bring the sprawling interconnect together under an RTO construct. Or maybe not. That would be okay, he says. But there are active discussions among a range of parties about some form of a regional RTO, he notes. "All these ... different forms of regional opportunities ... are being discussed, and not being pushed by the regulators or the FERC. These conversations are organically happening because the utilities and the regions are seeing the changing system conditions and the need for broader collaboration as a means to enhance reliability, but also unlock, really, the benefits, the economic benefits as the system transitions."Support the show
To produce insights, we need to reframe our approach to Insight activity. We should move away from a focus on functional disciplines like market research, customer analytics and competitor intelligence, and instead, see each as input to the creation of a holistic story – a story about how consumers in our market become customers of our organisation and create value for it. Topics DiscussedOrganisations need joined-up Insight to succeed (1.10)Reframing our approach to Insight activity (3.30)The MADE in Insight model (3.53)Should we start with the market or the money? (8.05)Engineers without a blueprint (9.34)Highlights“A key problem for Insight teams is that we behave like engineers without a blueprint. If you think about an engineer – a heating engineer for example, or a mechanic working on aircraft – they will always have a blueprint that describes the key components in a system and the way in which those components work together when the machine operates.”“If you work as a corporate Insight manager, analyst or market researcher, the machine you are working on is your organisation. You are researching and analysing the way that consumers in a market interact with your organisation and how that creates or destroys value for your organisation.”“The MADE in Insight model was developed to help my Insight managers at Barclays appreciate the four broad categories of our eco-system: the market environment, consumer choices, customer behaviours and financial outcomes, and to encourage analysts and researchers to map from the market to the money every time they were engaged in a new piece of work.”“So here's an interesting question… is it really MADE or EDAM... Where should we start? We can actually start at either end, depending on the nature of the business issue we are looking at.”This is episode 5 of the Transforming Insight podcast. Almost every listener will be familiar with the Turkish-made TB-2 Bayraktar drone. Most will have seen the many reports of its operational effectiveness in the hands of Ukrainian forces defending against Russia's invasion of their country. But beyond that media coverage, the story of the drone's development, its particular capabilities, and its performance not just in Ukraine but in other recent conflict, as well, is an interesting one. To discuss these topics and explore the broader implications of the TB-2's effectiveness in Ukraine, John Amble is joined on this episode by Dr. Can Kasapoglu, director of the Security and Defense Studies Program at EDAM, a Turkish think tank, and a nonresident fellow at the Jamestown Foundation.

Hopes are growing Turkey and Armenia could reopen their borders after nearly thirty years after Turkish Armenian envoys described last month's diplomatic talks as "constructive and positive," Ankara cut diplomatic relations and seized its border with Armenia after Armenian forces seized Azeri territory in fighting over Nagorno Karabakh, an enclave internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but with a majority Armenian population. Ankara counts Baku among its closest allies. 'No clear barrier to rapprochement' In 2020, Azeri forces with Turkish support recaptured territory they'd lost. Sinan Ulgen of the Istanbul-based Edam research institute says victory opened the door to the Turkish Armenian rapprochement. "Today, therefore, there is no clear barrier to this rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia," said Ulgen, "Because as we recall, it was on account of the occupation of these territories back in the early 1990s, that Turkey had decided to close the border." "So now that justification has disappeared, and on top of that, there are also positive messaging from Baku about the Turkey Armenia rapprochement," added Ulgen. The prospect of renewed trade with Armenia is welcomed by Turkish traders living near the two countries' borders. "Look at the European countries; they do business with each other," said cheese seller Huseyin Kanik. "It is a country (Armenia) that is so close to us. From here, in an hour, you are in Armenia and the same if they come here. One hour is all that separates us. So people could go back and forth, do business, go in the morning and come back in the evening." Armenian workers Reopening the border would help the thousands of Armenians working in Turkey. Armenians working illegally can be found praying at a local church in Istanbul. Among those attending who did not want to be identified, say the restoration of diplomatic relations could help with their status and mean an end to the arduous road journey home via neighboring Georgia. Remittances from Armenian workers are an essential source of income for their country's economy, which has been hit hard by being denied direct access to Turkey's large market and important transit routes to the broader region. Preparations are already underway for the reopening of the border. "The reopening of the border will consist of the opening or establishment of two critical border cross points," Said Richard Giragosian, Director of the Yerevan based Regional Studies Center. "One for trucks and trade and the other for tourism. And in both areas, there is tremendous potential because the border has been closed for so long there is pent-up demand," added Giragosian, "At the same time, we also see a level investment in preparation of the reopening." Historical Obstacles History could be an obstacle to rapprochement efforts. Along with much of the world, Armenia accuses Turkey's then Ottoman rulers of committing genocide against its Armenian minority during World War One. Ankara denies the genocide charge insisting the deaths occurred during a civil war. But Yerevan may not want the past to dictate the rapprochement agenda. "It's a policy of no preconditions, meaning that normalization is not reconciliation," claimed Giragosian. "This is not about the Armenian genocide; this is simply the basic minimum of neighbors, establishing diplomatic relations, and having open borders. Reconciliation will come later, with normalization as an important foundation," he added. A normalisation of relations would likely help ease Ankara's strained ties with Washington and the European Union, which have welcomed the diplomatic efforts. Both have strongly criticized Turkey's Armenia policy, forcing Yerevan to depend on its Russian and Iranian neighbors. But some analysts the reopening of the Turkish Armenian border could ease that dependency. "That would have a huge impact in the region regarding easing cooperation and particularly communication and transportation," claimed Zaur Gasimov, an expert on the Caucasus at Bonn University. "The boost of cooperation between these two countries would diminish the role of Iran in the region entirely, and Tehran opposes that, and the same goes for Russia," he added. "Because it makes the large profile presence of Russian military region that puts it in a completely new light, that questions its number and its role." Direct flights The announcement of new direct flights between the two countries starting in February is the first positive step forward. But earlier this month, three soldiers were killed in border clashes between Armenian and Azeri forces. Those fatalities underscore what some observers say is the fragility of the rapprochement process. "Circumstances can change," warns analyst Ulgen. "if there is a flare-up in Nagorno Karabakh, for instance, or at the border, things may be different. That's why I think it's important things need to move at a rather fast pace."
River and Terran have a wonderful surprise for their viewers in this episode of GoGreenfields. Let's tour the barn and make some goat cheese! River and Terran begin with their goat, Toffee, who is kind enough to supply the goat milk for the Greenfield family, since the birth of her baby goats – Lancelot and Brulee. Making Goat Cheese After milking Toffee, the twins head to the kitchen to demonstrate how goat cheese is made. For this process, you will need: Goat Milk Mesophilic Culture. It is ideal for making a variety of hard cheeses such as Monterey, Cheddar, Jack, Edam, and Gouda. Mesophilic is also the most common of two cultures, as it is used to produce the majority of cheeses that cannot be heated up to high temperatures. You must use a non-metallic bowl (we prefer ceramic). Animal Rennet. This is an enzyme used to form curds in the milk. Muslin Cheese Cloth Wooden Spoon 2 teaspoons salt Plastic wrap We hope that you'll listen or watch, and make some goat cheese with us. Be sure to share your outcome with us on social media! The Trueman Show #33 Flavio Pasquino Disclaimer: We are in the process of adding English subtitles to all the podcasts. Please bear with us, it will take a little while. Want to help translating? Please send an e-mail to info@jornluka.com Ga naar mijn website www.jornluka.com.
“What Are We Drinking About”, w/ Erik & Jodi Dingus Day Episode 04/08/2021 For today's show, we're celebrating that Polish Holiday- Dyngus Day! We're doing a Dingus Day episode! Celebrating that holiday and all that is polish in beer! Cheers With that being said we're I've selected a selection of local and international Polish-styled beers! Tonight's selection: Zywiec- Polish Pils: ABV 5.6 | IBUS 30 Taste is very much the same - sweet but naturally so, nice malty taste, no artificial flavors. Little hops but that's actually a benefit as it lets the malty sweetness shine. Flying Bison Bison- Polonia Pils: ABV 4.8 | IBUs 30 Crisp Pilsner brewed with German Pilsner malt as well as Saaz, Hallertau and Lublin hops. Na zdrowie! Grolsch – Pislner: ABV 5.0% | IBUS 28 A traditional Polish styled Pilsner style beer with a big hoppy flavor and bite owing to dry hopping late in the brewing process. The zesty and fragrant hops make for a refreshingly dry finish and a slight sweet and sharp zing to the palate, which are best enjoyed with rich, creamy foods like pork sausage and mustard mash, quality fish and chips or cheese like Old Amsterdam, Edam or Brie. Grolsch is known to use a distinctively shaped bottle for its beer, known as de beugel or 'swingtop' Zywiec- 1881 Porter: ABV 9.5% | IBU N/A Zywiec Porter pours mahogany to black, letting no light in, with a thin tan head. The aroma is malty with a little molasses and a faint undertone of coffee that's nearly indistinguishable. It's a different tasting porter than most, especially when it's cold. At first it seems crisp, with a faint lagery yeast that's mostly masked by roasty malt. If you let it warm, it really opens up into a malty smooth porter with balanced molasses and dark roasty tones that play nicely on your tongue. It sits pretty heavy in your mouth and when warmer, you can get a boozy bite on the finish that's pretty pleasant. At 9.5%, it's nothing to scoff at, but the alcohol is hidden well especially when it's cold. If you're into porters, try this one out for the uniqueness of it, as they've been brewing this one from the same recipe since 1881.
Challenges of the Female Entrepreneur in the Beauty Jungle In this Startup Stories episode of the Reboot Chronicles, I talked with Franziska Leonhardt, co-founder of AVE + EDAM, an award-winning company based in Berlin, that offers tech-enabled personalized products. As you may have guessed, the company's name is a play on Adam and Eve and was founded in Silicon Valley at Stanford University, on the principles of influencing change in the beauty industry. Levels of Personalization Personalization of beauty products and experiences are increasing in popularity. A recent survey found that eight in ten consumers stated they had purchased personalized skincare products, with 35% spending around $100 on customized products. With that, is personalization here to stay—or is it a fad? Looking at the past, Franziska notes that products started off being highly personalized, as they were developed from the pharmacy, but were not available to everyone for price reasons. She believes personalization will grow, and could become a standard across many categories, if it can be developed and delivered at affordable costs. However, given mass-scale issues, I do not see the big brands moving quickly to introduce custom formulations. To unpack the real trend, it is important to understand two different levels of personalization: SKU level personalization and formula level personalization. SKU Level Personalization: Using AI/selfie skin data and analysis, brands and retailers recommend currently available products—potentially narrowing a search from 50 to five specifically targeted SKU's. Formula Level Personalization: Using the same AI/selfie skin and data analysis, brands offer custom-formulated products targeted to a person's specific profile data. Personalized customer journeys and product/service choices can be achieved by partnering with AI solutions providers like Revieve. Female Entrepreneur Challenges are Real Starting a company, in what industry experts call “The Beauty Jungle,” has been a huge challenge for Franziska—especially when it came to differentiating herself and brand. In the beginning, she had her hands full with all the startup challenges entrepreneurs face, while being a single mom. She experienced fundraising issue with European investors, who saw her as a single mother rather than an entrepreneur. Given the strong women in tech movement in America, especially in Chicago with programs like WiSTEM at 1871 where I mentor CEO's, she eventually found supportive U.S. investors. It's a remarkable story that is still evolving, and Franziska's passion and determination is contagious --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rebootchronicles/message
