Being hailed as the poster child for a Covid generation might sit uncomfortably with some indie bands but Caleb Harper, frontman of Spacey Jane—a four-piece from Perth, Australia—takes it in his stride. Their 2020 debut Sunlight is defined by intimate lyrics often rooted in Caleb's strict, religious upbriging, that had made his transition to adulthood particularly fraught. Being part of Spacey Jane with Kieran Lama, Ashton Hardman-Le Cornu and Peppa Lane has continued to help him process feelings of anxiety and alienation. Bouyed by the sunny melodies, these songs have in turn, resonated with young millenials who came of age during the pandemic. For their 2022 follow-up Here Comes Everybody Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy gave his blessings for them to use the working title of Wilco's 2001 masterpiece Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Many thanks for making this possible: — Thank you Caleb for a heartfelt conversation and looking forward to maybe a 'not so sad' song.' Thank you to Kobalt US and Dew Process Publishing for use of all songs. And to Zoe Hines and Grace Jones at Grandstand Media for support.Songs Featured: "Sitting Up," "Thrills," "Good Grief," 'Love Me Like I Haven't Changed," "Booster Seat," "Lunchtime," "Hardlight," "It's Been A Long Day," and "Pulling Through."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com Or leave a voice message here. The Perth outfit's 2020 debut album Sunlight hit Number 2 on the Australian charts, and their just-released follow up Here Comes Everybody landed at Number 1. Go back to 2016 when the band formed, though, and it's unlikely singer-guitarist Caleb Harper was thinking about this kind of success – at that point, as he was crashing out of university and unsure of what to do with his life, being in a band was simply one of the few things that kept him going. We talk about Caleb's journey from then to now in this interview, as well as his upbringing, the realities of adapting to life in a successful band, and Spacey Jane's decision to remain independent throughout.

This was sponsored by Balchem Animal Nutrition & Health. What you're about to hear is that Q&A session. Full presentations can be found here.Dr. Jim Wallace discussed the decision for the 2050 goal for net zero emissions. He said that the 30-year goal provides an adequate window and runway for more innovations. He also touched upon three ways to reduce emissions within the dairy industry by focusing on manure, energy and feed production. (4:42)Caleb Harper discussed his background in the greenhouse industry and talked about the similarities he sees with cross ventilated barns and greenhouses. Cross ventilated barns are allowing producers to reduce emissions by using new technologies. (13:10)Dr. Frank Mitloehner played out a scenario with his students in the classroom by asking about technology in human health first then technology in agriculture second. He claimed that the overwhelming majority were in favor of technology in human health but were against technology in animal agriculture. He also pointed out that there are more patents in a tomato than in a smart phone. (18:16)Dr. Juan Tricarico discussed his study on byproducts fed in the dairy industry. His study focused on removing those byproducts from the diet to see if they could limit emissions. By removing byproducts from the diet they could reduce emissions but where would those byproducts go if they were not being used by the dairies? The byproducts produce less emissions being digested by the cow than they would in the landfill where the nutrients would also be wasted. (39:22)Dr. Frank Mitloehner discussed nitrates being high in California water. Some California dairies must purchase drinking water because the nitrates are so high in their water supply. He pressed that there are more components to focus on, besides methane and greenhouse emissions, when it comes to the bigger picture of the environment and sustainability. The West Australian band have built up plenty of momentum the past year. This album confirms their place as one of the country’s best new bands. However, the story of Spacey Jane extends back a lot further, to teenage years in Geraldton, forming friendships and jamming on Red Hot Chili Peppers through the night. For singer and main songwriter Caleb Harper, his musical development has existed alongside a religious upbringing that has taken years to reconcile. Harper and drummer Kieran Lama speak to Richard Kingsmill about those years, and how it affects the emotional content of the band’s song writing.

In this third installment of the James Beard Foundation Food Summit 2017: Consuming Power, James Beard Foundation Executive Vice President Mitchell Davis chats with Kate Cox (New Food Economy), Tamar Haspel (The Washington Post), and journalist Helen Rosner in a discussion titled Cultivating Consumers Into Citizens: Perspectives from the Media to examine how their roles in the media allow the consumer to further understand the complexities of the modern food world. Then we hear Caleb Harper (Open Agriculture Initiative) talk about how the act of farming is truly “unnatural”, in addition to GMO manipulation and the ethics of new food and farming technologies and developments. In the panel titled Science and Society, Caleb Harper joins Jennifer Kuzma, (Goodnight-NC GFK Foundation and NC State University), have a conversation about ethics, science, and food. Hear them describe how things get complicated when scientific innovations in food, technology, and farming have the potential to dramatically change the social, political and environmental landscapes of the modern world. By 2050, a projected 9.7 billion people will inhabit the planet. How will we produce enough nutritious food to support this burgeoning population and ensure access to food resources, particularly as climate change stresses the environment? This Forum explored innovative methods and systems for producing food, as well as new types of products and underutilized sources. The panelists talked about emerging technologies, including advances in genomics and aeroponics, to grow food. They also discussed ways to sustain at-risk food resources made vulnerable from climate change, and the impacts for populations in developing countries. Part of The Andelot Series on Current Science Controversies, this event was presented jointly with PRI's The World and WGBH on December 13, 2016.
