Friday - Day 9 of the 40 day fast -- Veterans for Peace's "Fasting for Gaza." When I arrived at the US Mission across from the United Nations in Manhattan, a dozen peace activists where facing 1st Avenue with their signs calling Israel and the United States to feed the Palestinians of Gaza. I first spoke with Mike Ferner -- Mike Ferner – a Vietnam War Veteran and former city council member of Toledo, Ohio, author, and peace activist – who had protested US war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. We talked about not eating; Mike was holding up quite well with his 250 calorie-a-day diet.I then had a longer conversation with Ms. Kelly who reported on her meeting with the Irish Ambassador to the United Nations and the need for Israel to uphold trade deals with the European Union. She explained how the Irish people understood starvation and famine in their genes and that young Irish artists -- the rap group KneeCap -- support a Palestinian state. If you have any questions for Kathy Kelly -- email me -- Alan Winson -- at barcrawlradio@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Meet Rev. Bill McDonald, a modern-day mystic and spiritual explorer whose life has been marked by extraordinary experiences and an unquenchable thirst for the unknown. Bill's transformative journey commenced with not just one, but three near-death experiences (NDEs) that bestowed upon him a profound connection with the realms beyond the ordinary. Through these glimpses into the ethereal, he gained insights into the intricate tapestry of existence that few have encountered. However, Bill's quest for enlightenment did not end there. Drawn by an invisible thread that tugged at his heart, he embarked on a pilgrimage of a lifetime—an odyssey that led him to the remote cave of Mahavatar Babaji. This legendary Himalayan sage said to be an immortal yogi and the guiding force behind many spiritual adepts, became the focal point of Bill's inner calling. With unswerving determination and the blessings of synchronicity, he traversed treacherous terrains and navigated the labyrinthine path to reach the cave where Mahavatar Babaji was believed to have meditated for centuries. Bill's narrative is a remarkable testament to the intertwining of spiritual resonance and human perseverance. His encounters with near-death realms and his relentless pursuit of the divine led him to the sacred sanctum where time seemed to dissolve. In this convergence of past lives and present purpose, Rev. Bill McDonald not only found solace for his soul but also discovered a new chapter of existence—one that resonates with the timeless wisdom of Mahavatar Babaji and the eternal currents that weave through all of creation. His journey invites us to contemplate the interplay between the tangible and the intangible, and to ponder the eternal question: What lies beyond the boundaries of our mortal perceptions? This week's Urban Valor episode features Marine Scout Sniper & Vietnam combat veteran, RJ Jackson. RJ enlisted into the Marine Corps in 1966 after hearing one of his good friends was shot and killed in Vietnam. He was selected to become a scout sniper after demonstrating expert proficiency with his rifle. During his tour in Vietnam, RJ was ambushed and wounded multiple times. During one ambush he was hit with a grenade and took shrapnel all over his body. As he lay on the ground to play dead, several enemy fighters walked past him thinking he wasn't alive. RJ said some of the enemy fighters who walked by him were Chinese, which one of his Lieutenants confirmed later. Sitting down with and hearing RJ story was an honor, and we're proud to have documented it and solidified it's place in history. At Urban Valor, our mission is to give Veterans a voice by presenting them with a platform to share THEIR story in THEIR words, allowing them to share the story they wish to share. Urban Valor is an organization that documents the stories of veterans in their own words and recollection

"My experience in the army recruit training was pretty hard. I went to Kapooka in 1970. There was a little bit of racial discrimination there from one person but when I went into the infantry training, I didn't get any, and in the battalion, I joined. Nothing whatsoever. No discrimination. It was all one family. In Vietnam we were all the same. We were all brothers and we still are at the moment." - Graham Taylor

This week on Wellbeing, we speak with Roger Helle, a Vietnam War Veteran about his PTSD journey. The Vietnam War occurred between 1955 and 1975 and is significant as it was with this veteran cohort that PTSD was first officially recognised. Roger began life in a dysfunctional home with a mother who was an alcoholic, an upbringing which he says later contributed to his PTSD. Roger joined the Marine Core at age 17 and after basic training in late 1965 was shipped off to Vietnam. Despite believing he received good training, Roger reflected that “Vietnam was a different kind of war" and was just 18 when he saw his platoon sergeant shoot in the head with a 51-caliber machine gun bullet. With all these experiences of fear, anger, and grief those in Vietnam had to just stuff it down inside themselves and keep going. After returning home for the second and last time from Vietnam in the early 1970's, Roger tried to forget the experiences he had during the war but relived Vietnam every night while sleeping and soon suffered from alcoholism. Through his faith, Roger has been able to manage his PTSD and still keep living life. Today, Roger is involved with the not-for-profit humanitarian organisation and ministry "Vets With A Mission". In this episode, Roger talks about his service in the Vietnam War, the war time experienced he had while there, how he dealt with the trauma while in Vietnam, how his Vietnam experiences affected him in the form of PTSD on his return, how his PTSD effected his relationships, and his journey to being able to manage his PTSD. "I had never seen anybody die before and just the things that I witnessed just in that short forty-five minute fire fight just left an impression in my mind" - Roger Helle on this episode of Wellbeing Tune in next week when we speak with a Falklands War veteran about their PTSD journey. This week on Wellbeing we speak with Carol Schultz, a daughter of a World War Two veteran who had PTSD. Carol's father, Dutch Schulz (1923-2005) enlisted in the army in 1942 following the Pearl Harbor attacks. Dutch is best remembered as being depicted in the 1962 John Wanye film “The Longest Day”. This movie was made about the 1944 Normandy Invasion that is known as D-Day, a battle in which Dutch fought in as a part of the 82nd Airborne Division. After returning from the war, Dutch took back with him also what would become known as PTSD. Carol was born soon after her father's return and wrote about her experiences as a daughter of a WW2 vet going through PTSD in her book “The Hidden Legacy of World War II: A Daughter's Journey of Discovery”. While writing this book Carol obtained copies of her father's Veteran Affairs documents. Dutch Schulz had been trying to receive compensation for PTSD symptoms since 1946. Dutch did not receive help or compensation from the VA for his PTSD until over 50 years later in the early 2000s. In this episode, Carol shares a bit of her father's WW2 service, the challenges her father went through with his PTSD in a time where PTSD was not recognized, the meatal health struggles her father had because of his PTSD, how she was affected by having a father with PTSD, how her family helped her father in time where PTSD was not understood, and how her father found help with his PTSD towards the end of his life. “My mom did tell me stories about what my dad was like when he came back from the war and how changed he was and the horrible nightmares he would have, so I did have a sense that the war had some impact, but it wasn't a popular culture, so children of veterans of that war, we felt we were isolated” - Carol Schultz on this episode of wellbeing Tune in next week where we speak with Vietnam War Veteran about their PTSD journey We would love to hear from you! In this episode of Change It Up Radio, Tony Perez joins me to talk about using golf as a form of rehabilitation for returning combat-injured veterans. Tony Perez, is a Vietnam War Veteran and the Founder/President of Operation Game On (OGO), a golf rehabilitation program for returning combat-injured Veterans suffering from severe physical and mental disabilities sustained in combat while deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Battalion West, Camp Pendleton, to equip and instruct hundreds of injured troops, using golf as a form of mental, emotional, and physical therapy. Today, more than 600 combat-injured Veterans have gone through the program, several of whom have credited OGO for preventing them from committing suicide. Tony provides insight on how golf provides mental and physical rehabilitation which rapidly allows these troops to regain confidence and enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle again. He shares how Operation Game On's program assists injured soldiers through their rehab by simply taking their mind off injuries, surgeries, and doctors, creates a healing social environment amongst the Veterans with newfound lifetime friendships and a sense of community, and gives them hope of a clearer future after their tragic injuries and the traumatic experiences of war. Today's guest is Bill Taylor, author of On Full Automatic: Surviving 13 Months in Vietnam. In the book, eighteen-year-old Marine recruit William V. Taylor Jr. and his brother Marines are assembled into a new reaction force that is immediately tested in the fire of a bloody conflict known as Operation Beaver Cage. After a traumatic first fight, they push through back-to-back operations with little time to rest or reflect. Those who survive will return home ensnared by everlasting memories of a real, but an entirely surreal nightmare. Now after more than fifty years of holding everything in, Taylor shares his experience in explicit and often horrific detail and with a reverent honor for those Marines who did not live to tell the tale.Bill is a U.S. Marine Veteran and his new book has hit a chord with readers with nearly 5 stars on Amazon, 850 reviews, and 25 weeks straight as a #1 Amazon bestseller in three separate categories. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Kathy Barnette rejoins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a story that broke yesterday concerning an endorsement questionnaire sent out by the Philadelphia Inquirer that had very pointed and biased questions. Barnette tells about the questionnaire, with Giordano revealing questions asked by the newspaper, such as the first one asking ‘who won the 2020 Presidential election,' offering up Joe Biden and Donald Trump as choices. Barnette explains that she refused the questionnaire due to the biases in the questions, but also tells that she wouldn't even want the endorsement of the Inquirer, as their reputation has been sullied to such a level that the endorsement would be a detriment to her campaign. Then, Dom celebrates Vietnam War Veteran's day, discussing the importance of Vietnam veterans in the fabric of American culture. After that, Giordano switches over to a suggestion made by Tucker Carlson, with the Fox News host saying that the time has come to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from office. Giordano tells of the negatives of such a suggestion, telling how much worse the country would be off if Kamala Harris were running things rather than Biden. (Photo by Janos Kummer/Getty Images)
On National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we share an interview with Arthur Henry, originally part of The Greatest Memories podcast in November 2019.
My name is Joseph Holmes. I am an experienced guest and as a result of hearing my story people are often moved to tears and become aware of their own angels and experience a new sense of hope, meaning, significance and joy in their lives. I am a survivor of childhood sexual trauma and a disabled (PTSD) combat veteran who, in 1991, went through a complete nervous breakdown resulting in the loss of my career and livelihood. I survived through the grace of God and my angels. I have a very simple message I believe will benefit your listening audience, as it has done for so many others. In 1991 my life turned upside down. A nervous breakdown followed by a period of deep depression ushered in my “dark night of the soul.” Over time I became aware of the angels around me, and my life with Mother Mary, and most notably Mary Magdalene (whom I affectionately call, “Maggie”) with her spiritual poetry Love Notes For Your Soul, began in earnest. It's a spiritual story of “Angel Interventions” and transformation available to all of us.

Matt Keenan initially came to Vietnam from New York over 50 years ago, having being drafted for the war, before returning home and adapting to civilian life. He discovered many years later that he had cancer, primarily caused by exposure to the infamous 'Agent Orange' chemical in the Vietnam War. In 2015, he returned to Da Nang, Vietnam to become immersed in the culture, meet the people, and discover the real Vietnam. He currently participates regularly at the 'Da Nang Agent Orange's Victim's Association', helping children currently still affected by Agent Orange. We discuss his war time and civilian experiences, dissect his return to Vietnam, explore how the effects of the war and Agent Orange are still prominent today, and discuss the work he does at the association, and why Vietnam as a whole is such a special country. For further information or enquiries, contact Matt at 'Matthew C F Keenan' on Facebook and 'Da Nang Agent Orange Victim Association' (DAVA) on Facebook, and for more information on ComebaCK, visit @thecomebackwithck on Instagram. On this episode of The Massimo Show Rod sits down with Steve Rizzo. An American motivational speaker, author, and former stand-up comedian, Steve is notable for his humorous style of motivational speaking and writing. Rizzo is a member of the National Speakers Association and an inductee of its Council of Peers Award for Excellence Speaker Hall of Fame. At one time Steve was sharing the marquis with folks like Ellen DeGeneres, Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy and Jerry Seinfeld; a showtime comedy all-star. At the peak of his career he decided to go in a different direction. Steve was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised by what he calls “good people” but from an early age they instilled what could casually be called a sense of impending doom. Life outside the home wasn't much more supportive. In middle school Steve was having difficulties and challenges in school and was told by a counselor that he “didn't have what it takes” to go to college. That seemingly small comment made a huge impact on the rest of his schooling. In high school Steve was nominated for the “least likely to succeed”. He took those beliefs that I wasn't smart enough, good enough, or worthy enough into his adult life. “My philosophy was don't try and you won't fail.” Steve recalls. As a result, he hung out with a tough crowd. Most are dead or in prison. It wasn't until 5 years after high school when his brother, a disabled Vietnam War Veteran, totally turned his life around and went to college. “He literally took me by the hand and took me with him to college to sit with him in class for 2 weeks. He then said, I am glad you did this, now I am signing you up.” Steve tells Rod. Despite being petrified to go do something he was specially told he would never be able to do Steve got straight A's. He graduated with a degree in Education-English and a minor is Psych. “ I went back to the school that nominated me least likely to succeed and I was counselor for kids with behavioral problems and an English teacher for 2 years.” Steve says. Success and the Shift Steve realized that the universe opens up when you start following your heart. But despite having obtained a degree and a coveted teaching position he quickly learned he wasn't done mastering new things. Through a series of “right place, right time, right people” Steve started doing stand-up part time in clubs on Long Island, NY. He was so good and so taken with it that he quit the second year of teaching to go into the world of stand-up comedy. “I didn't even take a leave of absence. I just quit.” says Steve. Shortly after he was headlining comedy clubs across the country. But Steve still wasn't done shifting into the perfect role. “What I realized was my opening acts, Drew Carey, Rosie O'Donnell and Chris Rock and they were getting the big breaks and I couldn't understand why I wasn't. Why was opportunity knocking on their door? I realized that opportunity was knocking, I was afraid to open the door.” Steve eventually let the worry about stand-up go and by the time the industry was begging him to hit the big time he had already decided what was next for him. “It was at a Tony Robbins seminar that I realized what I should be doing. I wrote 1) I should be doing this 2) I could be doing this 3) I will do this I made the shift. Everyone thought I was crazy. I was living in LA, flew home to NY and told my wife, who was supportive. I did stand up in the tri-state area to supplement income and in between I started investing my time and energy in how I could break into the speaking business. Everything started falling into place at a fast pace. When you follow your heart and you are doing what you are supposed to be doing with your life serendipitous events take place that will blow your mind.” Steve's Style What Steve offers his clients are the common-sense success strategies that will take them to a better place in life and career. The strategies are based on these 3 principles: 1) You are the creator of your success and happiness 2) You are the only problem you will ever have and somewhere within you is a solution waiting to be discovered 3) Whenever you are confronted with a challenge or problem of any kind it's never a matter of managing the situation, it is a matter of how you manage your mind. Your thoughts, along with your beliefs and attitude feed off of each other will eventually create the actions you take. The actions you take lead you to the outcome. That is why some people are successful and some people fail. A Final Tip: If you find yourself in a negative rampage, at that moment you need to stop and become aware you need to hear “who do you think you are?” In that state all the negativity stops because your brain cannot focus on 2 things at once. In that moment of awareness, you can turn it around.
Shot down and laying in a muddy killing field, surrounded by a barrage of enemy machine gun fire, Don Tate, a man who's sacrifice goes far beyond that of human expectation, had the thoughts and memories of a horrifying nine month tour of Vietnam flash before his eyes. Deploying in 1968, Don served as a rifleman during the Vietnam war. His story is truly remarkable, and is one we're incredibly grateful to have heard and had the chance to craft into something withstanding of Don and his experiences. It's important to note that this week's episode includes mature themes and has sounds and moments that may be considered confronting. We're cognisant of this, but we have made it our focus to oblige by Don's wishes and ensure that his story is told with the accuracy and the respect that it deserves. Don's fight continued further into his teaching career and thereafter his retirement. What are the benefits that these elder Veteran citizens are entitled to receive and are they receiving the benefits that they deserve? What about their spouses and families? Would benefit assistance for the veteran in their elder years help provide the care they need and alleviate the stresses faced by their families and loved ones? What other circumstances have our veterans faced for which they are entitled to compensation? A leading Veterans benefit consultant and advocate will provide much needed insight and knowledge about what our elder veterans should be receiving, but often are not.
