In this episode, I'm talking with Charles Read of GetPayroll, who is a specialist in providing payroll services – although he started life as a US Marine, including serving in Vietnam. This interview has actually been quite hard to summarise. First of all, it's not about payroll. Yes, it gets mentioned, obviously, but the payroll business is just the context for the learnings to come. Within that specific space, the conversation does cover such topics as marketing, differentiating and niching – and how it's set up so that every day there is an accomplishment. A success. Then there's the element that explores the transferable skills that come from a military background and can be applied in business. Planning, discipline, teamwork, motivational skills and, of course, the desire to accomplish the mission at all costs. In fact, you effectively learn the key steps to enable you to make your business a well-oiled machine. However, hidden within this business context, there actually runs a very moving love story. Charles opens up about some very personal matters and we get to see what a business can really be about.  More than just systems and processes and results, but also a family, a support system and even a lifeline in times of need. Any summary I come up with feels like an injustice to the impact of this interview and the quality and quantity of the learnings you will receive. All I can do is ask you to take the time and make sure you listen to it all. If you want to know more about Charles, check out the following links: Charles' Linkedin Profile Charles' Website “The Payroll Book” If you're based in the USA, use the Discount Code “Podcast” to get a free copy – if there are any left So do check those out but for now, sit back, relax, think about how you can be successful every day, and, most of all, enjoy.

In this episode, our guest is Charles Read. As the founder and CEO of GetPayroll, Charles has provided full-service payroll and payroll tax services in Lewisville, Texas, since 1991. Only 86 people in the past 16 years have passed the US Tax Court Non-Attorney Practitioners Examination, allowing him to represent clients in the US Tax Court without becoming an attorney. In today's talk, Charles tells us about his business path and how he handles payroll. Stay tuned! About the Guest [00:35] Charles is a native Iowan who hails from the Midwest. Because he wasn't ready to go to college, he enlisted in the Marines and served for four years. Later, he discovered that military expertise didn't work well in the commercial world. So he went to college, obtained his degrees, and entered the business world. Corporate World [02:13] Upon joining Texas Instruments, he discovered that he was one of many new hires and that his academic accomplishments and college degrees were insignificant in the corporate world. Charles worked for a few different companies before beginning his own. Charles' Business [05:17] To help the company continue, Charles bought it from a friend and redesigned it with his friend's support. For the first ten years, he realized that there is no such thing as work-life balance for entrepreneurs and that you need a supportive spouse to help you through this difficult time. Mindset [09:54] Entrepreneurship requires a certain mindset; not everyone is cut out for it. Some people aspire to work for the government or have secure employment. But with Charles' experience in Marine Corps and his family having a business, he grew up to adapt and conquer any conditions, which are the skills needed in the business world. Payroll [13:03] Charles' business was initially an accounting firm with a payroll sideline. Later, he sold his accounting practice to his partner while continuing to handle payroll. Charles owns a payroll service firm that offers payroll services to small and medium-sized businesses across the country. [18:49] One of the most common blunders in the payroll sector is failing to outsource payroll services. Another is paying workers under the table or as independent contractors when they are employees. And this was the beginning of our book of procedures, and it was a list of how a payroll was to be done. And so if my employees did it, it was as if I had done it. So it was like a CPA had done the payroll. And I explained to them that, hey, things will screw up. Things will happen. We'll talk about it. We'll fix the checklist. We'll change procedures, whatever. But if you mark something on that checklist and say, I've done that and you didn't do it, you're fired. Okay? You can do it and make a mistake, and we'll work with it. Training, procedure, whatever. But if you tell me I did it and you didn't do it, you're fired. That became an absolute. You have to do the steps. You have to do the whole process. And if you do, then you're going to give the client what they want. I've proven that I know how to do it. I'm an expert at it. But I'll be honest. My staff doesn't let me do payrolls anymore. Different software, different times. And I'd have to go back and start over to learn how to actually do the payroll. Now, what I do, there's two things I do as CEO. First of all, I'm the tax expert. I deal with the IRS. I'm the CPA. I'm the US. Tax Court practitioner. I file the corporations and represent my clients in US. Tax Court. That's my specialty. “Business is not a sprint, it's a marathon, so stick with it and you'll be amazed what can happen over the years.“ Charles Read   After leaving the military, majority of servicemen and women find that all they have learnt and experienced is not valued and appreciated in the civilian world. This is according to our guest today, Charles Read, whose experienced while transitioning from the military to civilian life was not easy despite having the skills and expertise needed by majority of organizations. Charles believes that the service men and women have all they need and more to be successful in business, only if they believe in their abilities. Charles J Read is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), U.S Tax Court Practitioner ( USTCP), member of Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council (IRSAC), and the Founder of GetPayroll. Mr. Read's companies have provided full-service payroll services, payroll tax services, and other payroll-related services since 1991. Charles is an accomplished senior executive and entrepreneur with more than fifty years of financial leadership experience in a broad range of industries and the author of four books with the most recent one being, The Payroll Book: A Guide for Small Businesses and Startups. In todays episode, our guest will discuss his life in the military as well as how he was able to successfully start and run his business after leaving the military. He will also talk how the military helped him become who he is today. Listen in!   Social Media Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/GetPayroll/   Twitter - https://twitter.com/getpayroll   LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/getpayroll   Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxs-_RwC9NgfUcqbwvEaMIQ   I grew up in Iowa, graduated from high school at 16 and worked because I wasn't ready for college for a number of years. [3:11] We're a military family going back several 100 years and so we have always [3:24] I joined the Marine Corps at 17 and enlisted for four years and so I was 21 when I got [4:08] I started as an operator and later I was transferred to Okinawa to the third FSR support group there and was sent to IBM and became a computer programmer and systems engineer. [4:27] I got myself transferred to Vietnam and I got myself reassigned to the local infantry company that was doing interdiction and ambushes. [4:55] After six months being in the field I came back and was stationed in Kansas City Marine Corps automated service center. [5:22] When I got out, I found that businesses did not value my military experience and at that point I realized I had to go get the civilian credentials. [6:15] I went up to the local junior college and then to University of North Texas and in two and a half years, I had my MBA which got me [7:56] One thing the military teaches you is, how to accomplish things, staying focused and the discipline necessary. [8:17] One of the things I learned in management while in the Marine Corps is mission, men then self, and that you need to accomplish the mission and in business, that same mechanism works. [9:38] You complete the mission, you take care of your men, whether it be your employees or your clients, then you take care of yourself. [11:04] One of the biggest things I've seen that is destructive to businesses is ego. [11:12] You don't want to be the smartest person in the room, you want to know how to hire the smartest person in the room. [11:33] You learn to value your men because your employees are the most important thing you have. [12:03 My job as CEO was really not to do the work anymore rather my job is to make theirs easy and make them more efficient. [12:19] Commercial break. [13:22] When I was 14, I started doing security analysis because I was interested in the stock market and buying and selling stocks. [15:10] Afterwards I worked in the corporate world for 15 years and I realized I was never going to get to the top of a major corporation because I lacked the political skills. [16:03] Marines have a have a real aversion to sucking up to anybody and that did lead to problems at times, which I learned to just keep my mouth shut. [16:30] I started my own business and 30 years later, we're here but about 10 years ago, I sold off the accounting side, because I'd gotten kind of bored with it. [16:50] I finally realized one of my deficiencies here a few years ago, that I can't market my way out of a paper bag. [19:41] We're continuing to grow and bringing in clients to take care of them and enjoying the business. [20:02] I recently wrote my fourth book which Wiley published last year. It's the payroll book guide for small businesses and startups. [20:10] It's a comprehensive book and we think the only thing similar to it is the payroll source from the American Payroll Association. [21:10] For your listeners, if they'd like a copy of this, they will go to the payrollbook.com on the web, and enter the discount code for the podcast and we will ship them a free book. Do you park your ego at the door?  6 questions. 7 minutes. Pure insights. Episode 302: Successful business leaders park their ego at the door. Wise words from Charles Read, CEO of GetPayroll. TRANSCRIPTION OF QUESTIONS 2-4: Question number two. What is something that makes you smile and or laugh about working in your industry. The Internal Revenue Service. Now that may sound funny, but I have a, I get a great kick out of dealing with them as my lawyer. Put it another situation is like playing high stakes poker with somebody else's money. What a great, great, great comment. I love that it's one of my favorites. Question number three. I have a fictitious book with all the answers for business. What chapter would you think most companies should read chapter one. Park your ego at the door. I like that you want to expand upon it a bit I have seen more businesses fail, because the owner, the boss, the, the starter or the kid, the start, the kids, the startup the kids think they're better, smarter than the people that work for him, and they're not 10 years, sadly, Sadly, I've worked for companies. Yeah, I had one word, but once a year you take us all outside and point out that that was his name on the wall. Actually it was his father's name, but it was his name as well. And we didn't like it, we didn't have to go back inside. Well that's saying something, wouldn't you say, motivation, absolutely. Great story. Question number four. Other than that, Jared, work harder, have a great attitude and care for customers. What advice or insight, would you give to other business leaders. There's two catchphrases that I use that I really believe in. The first one I don't know where I got it from, but it is there is no traffic jam on the extra mile, you go the extra mile for your clients, because your competitors won't. And that sets you apart immensely. The other one I stole from Bill Gates. And he said, people will overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and underestimate what they can accomplish in a decade. It's a, it's not a sprint guys, it's a marathon. It's playing the long game, is that what I'm hearing. Absolutely, yeah we'll get it done this year, but you can get it done in this lifetime if you work at it. And really in the the impact that you can make over that decade or decades let's say could be immense. If you just, you know, really believe in yourself, am I right. Absolutely. I've been in business now for 30 years. I love it, and it's been successful. Your one was tough, let me tell ya. Yeah I can, I can tell you, I remember be going into business for myself many years ago too and yeah I used that first year you just question everything right and and when something doesn't go right, you think of what am I doing this for is that kind of got to what you have to experience as well. Absolutely and I think year seven was about as bad, but it got better and it's pretty good now. Excellent, excellent. Well that's, I'm glad to hear that and that's why you're on the show to be sharing that insight. Veteran Founder Podcast

Charles Read is a high profile guy, with TV segments in the financial news and more. And he's a big, big proponent of hiring military Vets, so he's a big favorite with us. A Marine veteran and also a Vietnam combat veteran, Charles is the founder president and CEO of GetPayroll, and online, fully-compliant payroll and payroll tax reporting service for businesses of any size. Military service was in the cards for Charles all along. His entire family has been “citizen soldiers” since the Revolutionary War. There's even a great-great-great grandfather who signed the Declaration of Independence; talk about heritage! With a father in the Navy and Charles being self-proclaimed “young and dumb”, he wanted a tough outfit and the Marines fit that bill. Interestingly enough, his sister was a Marine officer at the same time he was an enlisted man. Trained as a computer programmer and a systems engineer, he was sent to Okinawa where he subsequently requested a transfer to Vietnam and asked to be put in a combat unit. Since he was considered a smart guy with his computer background, he was made the radio carrier, which is like having “a target on your back” according to Charles. After six months of combat, Charles survived pretty much in tact but his experience of being part of a team doing whatever it took to accomplish the mission stayed with him forever. Mission, men and self was the Marine Corps way and is still Charles' way. After the Marines, getting into business also was a natural for Charles, with his family accomplished business leaders as well. Upon his discharge, Charles' computer skills were in high demand but didn't seem to count with employers because it was military training, not civilian. So he went back to school, passed the CPA exam and originally wanted to work for a big corporation and climb to the top. However, realizing he didn't have the “political skills” (read: he didn't stab people in the back), Charles decided to start his own company, just as his father had. Now, 30 years established, he has been quite successful and uses his success to promote the hiring of other military veterans who have also put their life on the line for freedom and liberty. He is also the founder of Custom Payroll Associates and Payroll On A Budget and has over 40 years of experience in the industry. Charles is a US Tax Court Practitioner and a United States Marine Corps veteran.   --- Fascinated by Payroll with Charles Read Our guest is Charles Read, who is a serial payroll entrepreneur. He's the president of GetPayroll, a payroll and HR advisor firm serving companies with 10 to 1,000 employees. Previously, he was the founder of Custom Payroll Associates, a CPA payroll firm of which the CPA part, he spun out into a company called Cheyenne & Reed, and he kept the payroll. During this time, he also set another company called Payroll on a Budget, which was serving his customers. Prior, he started his career with Texas Instruments as a financial analyst. He's a Marine. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps, and he is a graduate of the University of North Texas, where he got his bachelor and MBA degrees. So welcome to the show, Charles. Steve, it's a pleasure to be here. Thank you. It's great to have you. So, Charles, tell me a little bit about you. You have an interesting background. It seems like you are well-reached on this payroll business, but you've done different iterations of it. So tell me a little bit about how did you start this business and how do you become a payroll entrepreneur? I've been in business, I started working for my father in his business when I was six years old. So business has been what I've been all my life. When I was in school, I actually started a business making nose clips for my daughters who were synchronized swimmers and sold them to other synchronized swimmers around the country, around the world. So I've always been in business. But when I got to about 40, I'd been working for major corporations and realized I was never going to run a major corporation. I didn't have the political skills. I was unwilling to stab people in the back and throw them off the ladder. So I figured if I was gonna run a business as my father had done, I'd have to do what he did and start my own. So being a CPA and an MBA with lots of experience, I started a business. I actually bought a franchise. The franchise went belly up a year later, and the wife and I just took it and ran with it. That's been almost 30 years now. So, you know, being in business is how I was, you know, born into it and grew up in it. It just seemed natural to have your own business. So, for all those who have started one, you know, great. Bring your kids in. It's fun. Now, I never could work with my father. He was a rather authoritarian naval officer and we didn't get along all that well in business. But later on in life, we got along fine. But it's just what I was born to I guess and it's been a great run. I've enjoyed it immensely. So you think that you bought the franchise and then the franchise ran out of business. So was your franchise company was the Custom Payroll Associates or CPAI? It was actually Financial Express, which was a mobile accounting service. And the board, I was the COO at the time, I'd come from Pennies, and I was the COO, and the board was after the franchisor to sell off the original office and concentrate on selling franchises. So I bought that and took it over, and was having a lot of fun, and it had an integral payroll service bureau in the franchise. Then when the company went, the franchisor went belly-up, we changed the name, incorporated, and just moved on and built the payroll. I enjoyed payroll, I enjoyed taxes, I enjoyed accounting. Later on we took on a partner and my wife retired. She passed away a few years ago, but we had 45 years of marriage, it was pretty good. So the partner wanted more autonomy himself, so I sold him the accounting portion, kept the payroll, and we've been growing it leaps and bounds ever since. And he kept your name in the business because it's called Shane...
