Step right up to the macabre carnival of "Creepshow," where the echoes of Stephen King and George A. Romero's genius reverberate through the chilling anthology that's the star of our latest gabfest. With the flicker of the screen, I'll guide you down memory lane, injecting fresh blood into the twisted tales that have claimed their spot in the horror hall of fame. From the dark hilarity of "Father's Day" to King's own quirky turn in "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill," you're in for a ride as we dissect the ghoulish glory that has bound "Creepshow" to the hearts of fans.As we crack open the coffin on the Grantham family drama, we'll sip some whiskey and raise the dead with a nod to literary greats and the cultural threads woven into "Father's Day." If you thought meteorites and regrettably green thumbs were only the stuff of B-movies, think again; King's on-screen exploits and the mayhem of makeup mishaps will have you in stitches. And before we venture to the sinister sands of "Something to Tide You Over" with the formidable Leslie Nielsen, we'll take a moment to applaud the craft behind the creeping dread.Raise your lighters for the crescendo as we toast to the dynamic duo of King and Romero, whose collaboration sparked a box office inferno with its comic book panache, reviving the spirit of 1950s horror. The enthusiasm is palpable as we cap off our time together, so don't be shy—reach out with your curiosities and picks for future fright-fests on Instagram. Whether you're a "Creepshow" connoisseur or peeling back the cover for the first time, this is one conversation that promises to leave you with an insatiable hunger for more.Support the show

This was a peculiar episode because frankly, the topic wasn't on my radar until a female brothel owner from Nevada contacted me wanting to share her story. That interview was broadcast in the following episode but the suggestion led me to to this episode. At the time, I had been dusting off my Piers Gaveston episode which I have been kicking down the road since episode one though it eventually aired this year. But, having spoken to "Kiki Smith" I was intrigued by her motivations, her business savvy, and the fact that she was in control of production versus individuals who work in the same realm at the behest of others.  I wasn't entirely sure how such a controversial and divisive topic would be received by listeners but it was the most listened to episode of 2023. This episode contains adult content and is not suitable for young listeners. In this episode, I speak with Kiki Smith — not her real name. But she is a stay at home mom and a married woman who makes a quite lucrative living posting as KS Wifey on websites including Only Fans, many vids and even her own domain: kswifey.com. What led her into this industry? How does it affect her relationship with her husband? What are the pitfalls and perks? A candid discussion about a growing yet controversial segment of the sex industry. Guest: Kiki Smith KS Wifey on Onlyfans KS Wifey Official website

In October 2023, Hamas terrorists massacred Israeli civilians as well as many foreign tourists in an unprecedented attack. Consequently, the Israeli government under Netanyahu launched retaliatory strikes on Gaza with manifold civilian deaths. Over 50 years ago, a similar attack at the Munich Olympics also led to severe repercussions for Palestinian civilians.  I am rebroadcasting this episode which was among the most listened to during the last two years, with the hope that 10, 15, or 50 years from now this complex and ongoing conflict may find a peaceful and equitable resolution for all parties involved. In September 1972, the Olympic Motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” became an irrelevance as the world's greatest sporting event was ravaged by violence and bloodshed as the Palestinian Black September group massacred 11 members of the Israeli delegation. In this episode, I discuss the Munich Massacre. Why it happened, how it happened, and whether it could have been prevented. Music by Pixabay

This was the most disturbing episode I have ever recorded. Vatican Exorcist Vincent Lampert is one of the most prominent Roman Catholic combatants of demons in the world. I was very anxious when I made this episode as many people -- including a demonologist -- warned me I could provoke demonic forces. Thus far, I seem to have endured so I feel safe to reshare this episode. A few years ago, the Barna Group – a market research firm specializing in religious beliefs conducted a survey in which it emerged that more Americans believe Satan is real than believe in God. On a superficial level, the results seem counterintuitive. In a nominally Christian society, God and Satan seem to go hand in hand. But it's important to remember that the Satan figure of the Bible appears in Islam and Judaism, and that demons whether real or imagined pre-date the Abrahamic religions and can be found in ancient cultures around the world. But whatever his origins, Satan and his demons have inspired countless movies and TV shows and there are numerous instances of people arguing that these demons can and do possess people even today. In this episode, I speak with four people, an academic, a Vatican Exorcist, a fundamentalist Christian, and a man who believes demons can be tackled through science rather than religion. One of the most enjoyable interviews I have had over the past two years was with Prof. Margaret Schwartz from Fordham University about Eva Peron. Clearly, I wasn't alone as that episode was the most listened to of all episodes released within the last year. Next season, Prof. Schwartz will return with an episode on the late Lady Diana. But, in the meantime here is a chance for new listeners to hear the episode or for long-term listeners to get a refresher. In July 1952, some 3 million people gathered in the heart of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. They had come to pay their last respects to Eva Peron the President's wife. Overcome by emotion, the frenzied crowd poured forward leading to a crush in which 8 people were killed and thousands injured. Despite the huge crowds, Eva Peron or Evita as she was known was a divisive figure and her death was a milestone in rather than the end of her political influence in Argentina. In this episode, I explore the story of Evita. Featuring Dr Margaret Schwartz Associate Professor (Phd. University of Iowa) at Fordham University and author of Dead Matter: The Meaning of Iconic Corpses. Music from Pixabay

The new series of Fascinating People, Fascinating Places launches on 5 January 2024 with new episodes featuring the man who caught Saddam Hussein, the lawyer for the 9/11 mastermind, and much more. But in the interim, I am replaying five episodes that were selected by listeners as the best content over the last few years. If you're new to the show now is the time to catch up. If you're a long-term listener here is a chance to revisit some of the fan favorites.  Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I had the pleasure of speaking with WSJ veteran David Satter. He was expelled from Moscow due to his investigative work that indicated Vladimir Putin came to power on the back of terrorist atrocities committed by the FSB but blamed on Chechens. In this episode, he shares a compelling story that supports his claims. On 13 September 1999 Gennadiy Seleznyov speaker of the Duma announced to the Russian parliament that a terrorist attack had hit the remote and hitherto unremarkable city of Volgodonsk. The bombing did occur but not until 3 days later. But it was this incident in conjunction with other bombings that set in motion a series of events that salvaged the reputation of President Boris Yeltsin and laid the stage for his protege Vladimir Putin to come to power. But Selezynyovs apparent clairvoyance wasn't the only indication that something more sinister was afoot. And many people believe the second Chechen war was launched on the basis of a false flag attack concocted by Vladimir Putin. In this episode, I talk to the acclaimed journalist David Satter – formerly the Moscow correspondent for The Financial Times, and special correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. He was the first investigative reporter to detail what he believes was a bloody conspiracy to bring Putin to power. Aside from his journalistic work, David Satter has written five books about Russia including Age of Delirium: The Decline and Fall of the Soviet Union which was adapted into a documentary film, and more recently he authored The Less You Know, The Better You Sleep: Russia's Road to Terror and Dictatorship under Yeltsin and Putin. In December 2013, he was expelled from Russia having been accused of violating migration laws. A claim that he denies and has been widely derided. Like many before and since his real crime appears to have been His actual offense appears to have been his efforts to expose the true nature of an opaque and sinister regime. He has since worked with festivals, orchestras and many other artists to connect his stories to his audience. In this story about an arranged marriage, he includes voices and singing to narrate beyond the written word.  “The Iron Horse” by The Three D's from Heritage (2:19) Figuring out what to name a band can be tricky. This particular band went through names like ‘The Salt City Three' before resting on a classic play on names- The Three D's; Denis, Duane and Rick transformed to Dick to make it work. And the name stuck! Their career was heroic and inspired children and families everywhere. In this upbeat song, "The Iron Horse", The Three D's describe a train and the magnificent image of the exploration of the new world.  “The Blind Harper” by Paddy Tutty from The Roving Jewel (5:30)Paddy Tutty is best known as a singer of traditional songs. Her repertoire encompasses ancient ballads, songs from a woman's perspective, magical and seasonal pageants, songs with a twist, and songs about the world around us. Singing songs that weave traditional tales from all over Britain, Canada and Ireland, she enchants parents and children alike. In this story/song, Paddy sings the tale of a horse and stealing of horses. She teaches us to be thankful for what we have and what we sometimes must do to keep things we love close. “Dream Mine” by Paul Bliss from Pure Bliss (2:24)Paul Bliss is an English singer/songwriter that has traveled the globe backing famous bands and writing for himself. He has written many songs for other artists and continues to be adored by families all around the globe. In this wonderful poem Paul describes preparing for a storm and the treasures of it; how mining can be scary and sacrifice-inducing. There's even a lesson about how to push ourselves forward even through our own fear. “Anthem” by Jerry Brooks from Shoulder to Shoulder (6:27)Jerry Brooks is a storyteller that focuses on southern folklore. In this beautiful poem she relates the visions of the wind and land as they stretch before her. Of beautiful pastures and refreshing air, of the jingle of their jeans and the life that they miss. Jerry helps us all reminisce on these wonderful stories and experiences that we all must come to appreciate.  “Bill Greenfield and the Mosquitoes” by Joseph Bruchac from Adirondack Tall Tales, Volume One: The Bill Greenfield Stories (8:22)Joseph Bruchac is a writer of books relating to the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, with a particular focus on northeastern Native American and Anglo-American lives and folklore. He weaves poetry, stories and novels together to entrance families wherever he goes. In this entertaining story, Joseph describes massive mosquitos and the fight against them. This story can teach us how to fight for what's right and how to appreciate what you have.  “Going to Granny's” by Liz Weir from Boom Chicka Boom (4:40)Liz Weir is a storyteller and writer from Northern Ireland. She was the first winner of the International Story Bridge Award from the National Storytelling Network, USA, which cited her “exemplary work promoting the art of storytelling”. She enchants audiences all around the globe. This story is a cute rendition of learning what one needs and how to enjoy oneself in a new place.  “Hooves, Hide and Mane” by Sam Payne and Ryan Shupe from The Saga of the Sanpitch (3:06)You already know Sam Payne, the host here on The Apple Seed. Ryan Shupe is the lead singer of Ryan Shupe and The Rubberband. This fun song is about the feeling of running as a horse and the thrill of it all.  “Grandpa Al and Max” by Glenda Bonin from Family Gazette (16:49)Connecting with a story is highly important for Glenda Bonin and each story she tells is always connected and filled with love and care. She treats each story like it's own being and any audience member can feel it. In this fun story, Glenda describes her grandpa and how she always remembers him wearing a cowboy hat and the story of Max. Max was a rugged horse that he connected with.  “Hooves of the Horses” by Wylie Gustafson from A Western Jubilee: Songs and Stories of the American West (3:18)In this delightful song, Wylie Gustafson describes how horses can trample any sadness one might have, and it may be true. So let us all keep moving forwards and run like the wind.

Guten tag! Sprechen Sie Deutsch? This week on Eat Your Words, host Cathy Erway is talking to Jeremy Nolen, chef and author of the recently released “New German Cooking: Recipes for Classics Revisited.” Jeremy tells Cathy how he became interested in German cuisine and his process researching for the dishes, though he shares that many of the dishes are featured on the menu of his restaurant Brauhaus Schmitz in Philadelphia. Very cozy and homestyle, the book celebrates fresh vegetables, grains, herbs, and spices as obsessively as it does pork, pretzels, and beer. Jeremy goes on to preview recipes from his family table, inspired by travels in Germany, such as the fischgulasch. After the break, Cathy gets Jeremy’s background and learns that he’s basically been cooking his whole life. Tune in for an interesting show! Auf Wiedersehen! This program was brought to you by Visit Napa Valley. “There’s so many German 1850 influences in cooking like streusel, for one, is a tipping for pies, sauerkraut, hotdogs, hamburgers…” [18:50] “There’s no vinegar in sauerkraut, trust me, it’s just the fermentation process!” [26:50] —Jeremy Nolen on Eat Your Words
